    Introduction: Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) is a deadly protozoan that is accountable for malaria and chloroquine was the first-line antimalarial drug before its withdrawal and replaced by artemisinin. To date, several studies showed that P. falciparum had regained its sensitivity towards chloroquine after its withdrawal for decades. By understanding the basic principle and mechanism of chloroquine resistance in P. falciparum, at the molecular level, it would be valuable prior to the re-introduction of chloroquine as a first-line anti-malarial drug for malaria treatment. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the chloroquine resistance level of long preserved lab-adapted P. falciparum strain. Methodology: By using 14 years (2006-2020) cryopreserved chloroquine-sensitive (3D7) and chloroquine-resistant (W2) lab-adapted P. falciparum strains, the strains were subjected to continuous culture for three months before in vitro drug susceptibility assay and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) analysis on Pfcrt and Pfmdr-1 gene for both strains. Results: This study shows the IC50 chloroquine of lab-adapted P. falciparum 3D7 and W2 strains were at 32.98 nM and 691.21 nM, respectively and both strains showed 3-fold higher IC50 when compared to their susceptibility before cryopreserved (3D7; 13.84nM and W2; 208.27 nM). The SNPs result showed a consistent amino acid substitution at position 76 (K to T) on PfCRT and 86 (N to Y) in Pfmdr-1 gene which concordance with other studies before preservation. Conclusion: Thus, this study shows that long cryopreserved of lab-adapted P. falciparum increases the chloroquine resistance level but not exhibited any change in susceptibility.

    Background: Time management is one of the factors that may influence students’ academic performance in university. A cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the role of motivation camp programme towards time management among first-year undergraduate students of the Biomedical Science Programme, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) by using a questionnaire. Methods: A total of 32 students was categorized into group 1 and group 2 (n=16 per group), with group 1 is students who did not attend the motivational camp and group2 participated in the camp. Their academic performance in terms of Grade Point Average (GPA) was evaluated in semester 1 and 2 of the 2017/2018 session. A correlation test between total study hours and GPA in both semesters showed a weak correlation for group1 and group2. Independent T-test was also carried out to compare time management and GPA.     Background: Cardamonin is a naturally occurring chalcone from the Alpinia species. It is known to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Our previous studies have shown that cardamonin has antihyperalgesic and antiallodynic effects on CCI-induced neuropathic pain in mice. Although the evidence of the association between cardamonin and neuropathic pain has been reported in animal studies, specific targets using in vitro models are still lacking. Objectives/Methods: This study aims to investigate the effect of cardamonin on nitric oxide production using the LPS-induced neuropathic pain-like SH-SY5Y in vitro model through NMDA receptor expression. Results: Cardamonin administration in differentiated SH-SY5Y cells significantly reduced nitric oxide production assessed using Griess reagent. Western blot analysis demonstrated a significant reduction in GluN2B receptor expression in the cardamonin treated SHSY5Y cells compared to the vehicle treated group. Conclusions: These data suggest that cardamonin reduces nitric oxide production modulated through NMDA GluN2B receptor subunit. Our results provides preliminary data to support the in vivo studies using cardamonin and may contribute to further understanding the mechanisms of action of cardamonin.

Wujud persoalan yangsignifikan berkenaan pengimportan produk yang terlibat di dalam pemprosesan makanan, namun diragui sifat“toyyib” yang ada pada produk tersebut. Oleh itu, status pensijilan produk import ini merupakan satu langkahkeselamatan bagi masyarakat Islam dan perlu diberi penelitian yang serius kerana didapati status pensijilanhalal di negara Islam Timur Tengah kurang efisien dan tidak mendapat sokongan pihak kerajaan sepertimanaMalaysia.     Unmarried pregnancy causes arange of psychosocial problemsthat lead to difficult and distress situations. Whenconfronted with stressful situations, female adolescents are expected to rise up for a better life with the ability calledresilience. Thispreliminary studyaims to explore the resilience process amongunmarried pregnant female adolescentsand how the environmental context affects them. Therefore, the qualitative method of phenomenology is used tounderstand and explore the meaning of events of the respondent. The study sample consisted of two respondents involvingunmarried pregnant female adolescents (primiparous-pregnant for the first time) between the ages of 15 and 18. Thispaper is based on the results of semi-structured interviews methods. Interviews were recorded and interpretedimmediately afterthe field study. The results show that both respondents showed a negative influence during theresilience process with no support from the community. However, the respondent managed their resilience process withpositive influence thru strong social support from parents and immediate family members such as siblings, aunt andgrandmother. Thus, the burden of their psychosocial problems can be reduced and may improve their resilience

    A warrant is a security that allows the holder to buy and sell the underlying share at a
    fixed price until expiry date. Warrant price will always fluctuates since the underlying
    share also fluctuates. Hence, determining the warrant price is the main problem
    among the investors in Malaysia. This research is focusing on pricing the warrant for
    five companies that were listed in Bursa Malaysia. The companies were chosen
    randomly from UiTM DataStream. The selected companies were Boon Koon Sdn
    Bhd, Hovid Bhd, Kelington Bhd, ML Global Bhd and Tropicana Corporation Bhd.
    The data contained underlying share, interest rate, exercise price and actual warrant
    price. This research aims to define the price of warrant by using Binomial model.
    Historical volatility and implied volatility were used in this research whereby
    volatility is the movement of the underlying share price. This research aims at
    comparing the actual warrant price with the calculated warrant price. The data were
    computed manually by using Microsoft Excel and the comparison was made between
    the two type of volatilities to give the nearest value of calculated warrant price to the
    actual warrant price. The nearest value was assumed the best value for this research.
    The result was made by analyzing the line graphs and comparing between historical
    volatility and implied volatility with actual warrant price. Mean Square Error was
    used to support the results that were obtained from the line graphs. In the end, implied
    volatility yielded better results compared to historical volatility.

    Canarium odontophyllum is a rare tropical fruit that is primarily propagated by seeds.
    However, there is little information regarding its seed handling and germination. As
    low seed moisture content (MC), generally that below 10%, is the key determinant to
    successful seed storage while avoiding microbial damage, the objective of this study
    was, hence, set to investigate C. odontophyllum’s seed germination as affected by
    desiccation using drying beads (DBs) at room temperature or convection oven at
    40C to varying seed MCs, from its initial MC of above 20% down to that below 10%.
    It was found that the seeds tolerated fast dehydration within 24h at room temperature
    using DBs. They retained 90% germination despite seed MC was reduced to below
    10%. Desiccation tolerance with DBs was, however, found only with seeds extracted
    from fresh fruits. As the fruits started rotting with wrinkled appearance and fungi on
    the pericarp from four days after harvest onwards, the seeds extracted from them died
    at MC of below 15%. A slower seed drying method using convection oven at higher
    temperature of 40C, on the other hand, took 72h to bring the seed MC down to

    In today’s society, there is a great demand for appreciating nutritional standards in which characterized by rising costs and often decreasing availability of raw material together with concern about environmental pollution. Consequently, there is a considerable emphasis on their recovery, recycling and upgrading wastes. The food industry produces large volumes of wastes, both solids and liquids, resulting from the production, preparation and consumption of food. Due to legislation and environmental reasons, the food and beverage industry is highly enforced to find an alternative use for the residual matter. The latest trends impacting the food industry include moves to reduce the huge amount of food waste, as consumers simultaneously adapt their habits in times of continuing austerity. In the last decades, consumers demands in the field of food production has changed considerably. Consumers believe that food contribute directly to their health. Therefore, the idea of using underutilized and waste food products was triggered, where the main ingredient is made of plants waste which is corn silk. It is an invention to transform plant waste to corn silk flour – Zea Mays Flour ( ZMF) that benefit the society through its help of increasing food for the world. Furthermore, it can help to enhance global efforts towards food security, nutrition, dietary needs, as well as foster health and income generation. Recycling products using underutilized and waste food products also could help to sustain the environment. There is one fact that must be beared in inventors’ mind that scientific research alone does not guarantee for a product to be successful in the market. The product invented should fit the taste and needs for the consumers as the market success rate is influenced by the degree of familiarity and acceptance toward the product being sold. Many of the today’s food and beverage products are not intended merely to satisfy hunger and provide humans with necessary nutrients, as they aim to prevent nutrition related diseases and increase physical and mental well-being of consumers. Therefore, it is necessary for product development to explore which need that consumers are concerned about, so that the product could achieve success and market acceptance. The idea using food product using underutilized/waste product, corn silk become Zea Mays Flour ( ZMF), is hoped will support the idea of sustainability, specifically ins steadily gaining more attention from many food producers worldwide, to save the environment while at the same time boost the business through reduction of costs and considerable amount of waste.

    In general, most of the consumers in Malaysia would throw away their cooking oil just after one or two times of usage. Waste of the cooking oil is one of the root causes of water pollution as well as the cause of clogged the sink and drainage system in the residential areas. These situations occur due to bad habits of people to simply throw away used cooking oil that would affect and harm the environment. As the world moves forward to a sustainable city and greener environment, the society need to tackle this bad habit from becoming worse. This paper proposes a conceptual idea on how to educate, promote, create awareness as well as encourage the public to be more responsible in managing and disposing used cooking oil. The objective of this study is also aligned and inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

    In this era of technological advancement, there is a tremendous growth in the usage of mobile applications, mainly among accounting students in higher institutions as a medium for learning tools in education. Accounting students at tertiary level basically are subjected to learn different types of accounting standards. Accounting standards have continued to evolve to strike the balance between providing meaningful information to the users and balancing up cost of preparing such information. However, there is a growing concern that financial reporting has become overly complex. The complexity caused by financial reporting standards may derive from many factors, such as their length, the difficulty in understanding them, and the cost of applying their requirements. In the educational stream, students find that it is hard to understand lengthy wordings in the standards. Therefore, this interactive application is designed to help users especially students on classification issues under MFRS140 Investment Property. Hence,the purpose of the study is to prove the practicality and usefulness of mobile apps to understand accounting standards which is known as MFRS140: Quick Chart Mobile App particularly among final semester accounting students. In this study, the results revealed that this application provides useful and precise guidelines for students as to avoid lengthy wordings to increase the level of their understanding. By using the application, users will have a better knowledge in identifying whether the land and buildings fall under MFRS140 or other MFRSs. Furthermore, the application contributes to the effort of making users learn standards of accounting in a different perspective rather than a classroom-oriented perspective.

    Hyponatraemia is a common electrolyte imbalance in oncology. Rarely has it been reported as a presentation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). A 43-year-old gentleman presented with double vision, headache, weight loss, complex ophthalmoplegia and submandibular lymphadenopathy. Computed tomography (CT) scan and nasopharyngeal biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of NPC. Prior to chemotherapy, he developed severe hyponatraemia. Blood investigations failed to pinpoint a clear diagnosis, and he was not responsive to aggressive supportive treatment. Pituitary gland function tests and MRI subsequently was performed, and found a pituitary extension causing hypocortisolism. Finally, his hyponatraemia was successfully optimised with oral hydrocortisone. This case illustrates that ophthalmoplegia and hyponatraemia are important warning signs of NPC or any other aggressive sellar mass that should not be neglected.

    Blood donation in Malaysia is practised as voluntary non-remunerated. However, recruiting and retaining blood donors remain a challenge in the transfusion service. The main aim of this study was to understand the factors affecting the return of first-time blood donors. This was a retrospective study involving 480 first-time temporarily deferred whole blood donors from National Blood Centre (NBC), Kuala Lumpur. Data of donors who were deferred from 2010 to 2014 were extracted from the Blood Bank Information System. Deferred blood donors were categorised into two main groups, namely, a group of donors who returned for blood donation and a group that did not return for the donation. Each blood donor was contacted personally via telephone. Donors who returned were younger (p < 0.001), with females in a higher proportion (61.3%) compared to males (38.8%) (p < 0.001). Singles (68.3%) were more likely to return for donation compared to married donors (31.7%) (p < 0.001). Donors who lived in urban areas were more likely to return for donation compared to donors who lived in rural areas (34.6%) (p < 0.005). The most common factor that had motivated these donors to return was self-satisfaction (29.9%), while the most common factor that hindered them from returning for donation was the lack of time (28.50%). As a conclusion, more awareness and education regarding regular blood donation should be considered to donors from a rural areas. Additionally, mobile blood donation drives should be made easier for blood donors who have a busy lifestyle.

    Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic neurological disorder which can lead to abnormal tumour suppression. Neurofibromatosis associated neurological tumour is usually benign in nature, only occasionally can become malignant. Gastrointestinal involvement is reported to be infrequent with only up to 25% of patients with neurofibromatosis showing involvement. Solitary gastrointestinal neurofibroma is very rare, with most cases involving the stomach or small bowel. We report here a case of solitary small intestinal neurofibroma with no other associated systemic signs, causing intussusception and intestinal obstruction.

    The rare condition of neutrophils agglutination in-vitro may give inaccurate neutrophils count. We reported a case of a 71-year-old female admitted with a diagnosis of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) Escherichia Coli (E.coli) septicaemia secondary to the left lower limb cellulitis. Despite underlying infection, total white blood cell count (TWBC) and absolute neutrophil count remained in a normal range. An accidental finding of full blood picture (FBP) using K2 ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tube presented numerous neutrophils agglutination. Further tests were carried out using citrated and heparinised tubes and tested at room temperature, 4 C, and 37 ͦC. The findings showed a significant reduction in neutrophils agglutination in both citrated and heparinised tubes, including when tested at room temperature (RT) and 4 ͦC. Surprisingly, at 37 ͦC, no neutrophil agglutination was observed. This indicates that temperature-dependent anti-neutrophil IgM antibody may be found in the patient's serum that reacted with the EDTA anticoagulant. In conclusion, white blood cells (WBC) agglutination has been associated with malignancy, sepsis, liver disease, and autoimmune disease. Thus, a baseline FBP is recommended, especially in these categories of patients to optimise their clinical management.

    Xenobiotic substance released in the environment is a concern among the public at large. The example of this xenobiotic release into the environment is xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens have the capability to bind to the estrogen receptors in the body even at low affinity. Food, pesticides and contraceptive pills are known sources of xenoestrogens. In this study, acute toxicity test was conducted to evaluate toxicity of synthetic estrogen such as estradiol to the embryo-larvae of zebrafish model. Morphological changes in the embryo-larvae of zebrafish were also observed. The parameters that were evaluated in acute toxicity study were half lethal concentration (LC50) and few apical endpoints such as coagulation of embryos, development of pericardial edema, and eyes size. Toxicity effect of the compound was evaluated in term of behavior activity of the larvae. This study aimed to determine factors associated with poor pap smear quality in Barat Daya District, Penang.     Breast cancer in young pregnancy is a breast cancer diagnosed in a young lady at the age of less than 30 years old during pregnancy. Diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer during pregnancy are challenging as both maternal and fetal outcome must be considered in terms of their short and long-term effects. It requires multidisciplinary treatment. Instead, pregnancy should be preserved whenever possible, while treating the underlying breast cancer. It is important not to compromise the treatment of breast cancer because of the pregnancy. The overall therapeutic concept basically depends on timing of delivery, staging of the underlying disease, treatment mode and the impacts of treatment recommended as well as foetal outcome in relation to treatment that administered to the mother during pregnancy. We present a case of young pregnant lady at the age of 23 with breast cancer as it is a rare event and the challenges encountered in managing her and to highlight the treatment options for the patient and the baby.
