OBJECTIVE: This study focused on designing a serious game as an experimental program to prevent and control health rumors. The focus of the study was explicitly on the context of the social networking service for midelders/elders.
METHODS: This research involved 2 major parts: adopting the Transmission Control Protocol model for games and then, based on the model, designing a game named "Fight With Virus" as an experimental platform and developing a cognitive questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale. The relevant variables for this experimental study were defined, and 10 hypotheses were proposed and tested with an empirical study. In total, 200 participants were selected for the experiments. By collecting relevant data in the experiments, we conducted statistical observations and comparative analysis to test whether the experimental hypotheses could be proved.
RESULTS: We noted that compared to traditional media, serious games are more capable of inspiring interest in research participants toward their understanding of the knowledge and learning of health commonsense. In judging and recognizing the COVID-19 health rumor, the test group that used game education had a stronger ability regarding identification of the rumor and a higher accuracy rate of identification. Results showed that the more educated midelders/elders are, the more effective they are at using serious games.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to traditional media, serious games can effectively improve midelders'/elders' cognitive abilities while they face a health rumor. The gameplay effect is related to the individual's age and educational background, while income and gender have no impact.
PURPOSE: This study aims to identify the distribution and variation of medial and lateral pedicle wall widths throughout the different vertebral levels of the scoliotic spine and its differences according to age, gender, body mass index (BMI), maturity, curve types and curve severity in adolescent idiopathic scoliotic (AIS) patients with major thoracic curves.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective Study PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 6230 pedicles (right: 3064, left: 3166) from 191 patients were included in this study with 264 (right: 183, left: 81) fully corticalized pedicles excluded from analysis.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Demographic data were age, gender, height, weight, BMI, Risser grade, Lenke curve types and Cobb angles. Main outcome measures were medial and lateral pedicle wall widths. Associations between pedicle wall widths and demographic data were calculated.
METHODS: This was a sub-analytical retrospective study done on the same patient population as the previously published study on pedicle grading. The data was obtained from the main computed tomography (CT) scan pedicle study dataset. Medial and lateral pedicle wall widths were measured in the axial slices of CT scans from T1 to L5 vertebrae.
RESULTS: A total of 6230 pedicles (right: 3064, left: 3166) from 191 patients were included in this study with 264 (right: 183, left: 81) fully corticalized pedicles excluded from analysis. Right-sided medial pedicle wall widths were narrower from T4-T10 (0.75 ± 0.23 mm) compared to T1-T3 (0.89 ± 0.28 mm) and T11-L5 (0.92 ± 0.30 mm). Left-sided medial pedicle wall widths were narrower from T4 to T7 (0.76 ± 0.24 mm) compared to T1-T3 (0.88 ± 0.26 mm) and T8-L5 (0.90 ± 0.27 mm). Medial cortical wall widths were significantly thicker compared to lateral cortical wall widths for all vertebras from T1 to L5 (right medial 0.85 ± 0.28 mm vs lateral 0.64 ± 0.26 mm (p<0.001), left medial 0.86 ± 0.26 mm vs lateral 0.64 ± 0.26 mm (p<0.001)). The left medial pedicle wall widths were marginally significantly (p<0.001) thicker than right side (right medial 0.85 ± 0.28 mm vs left 0.86 ± 0.26 mm). Then main notable significant differences were located at the periapical region of the thoracic curve between T7 to T10 with left concave medial pedicle width being thicker than right convex medial pedicle width. The thinnest medial pedicle walls were located at right concave T7 (0.73 ± 0.24 mm) and T8 (0.73 ± 0.23 mm). We generally found no significant associations between the medial and lateral pedicle wall widths with age, gender, BMI, Risser grade, Cobb angle and curve types.
CONCLUSION: Knowledge on the widths of medial and lateral pedicle walls, their distribution and differences in a scoliotic spine is important for pedicle screw fixation especially during pedicle probing to find the pedicle channel. The medial pedicle wall widths were significantly thicker than lateral pedicle wall widths in AIS patients with major thoracic curves. The right concave periapical region had the thinnest medial pedicle walls.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink consumption (4,000 IU) on vitamin D and iron status biomarkers among iron-deficient women (serum ferritin of <20 μg/L [to convert μg/L ferritin to ng/mL, multiply by 1]).
DESIGN: An 8-week double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted.
SUBJECTS/SETTING: A total of 45 healthy, nonpregnant, nonlactating subjects aged 18 through 40 years (mean [SD] 25.3 [4.6] years) were included in the study, excluding those who donated blood 6 months prior, regularly consumed nutritional supplements, or had gastrointestinal or iron metabolic disorders.
INTERVENTION: Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink or a placebo.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Measurements of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D), serum ferritin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and full blood count concentrations were obtained at baseline, interim, and post intervention.
STATISTICAL ANALYSES: A mixed model, repeated measures analysis of variance was used to analyze the intervention effect.
RESULTS: Attrition rate for the study was 13%, with 6 dropouts, and 39 subjects completed the study. Daily consumption of vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink in the intervention group resulted in significant increases in 25(OH)D and serum ferritin concentrations compared with the placebo group. The intervention group showed significantly higher mean (SD) changes (Δ) in both 25(OH)D (Δ 76.4 [30.2] nmol/L [to convert nmol/L 25(OH)D to ng/mL, multiply by .4] vs Δ -1.3 [10.7] nmol/L; P = .001) and serum ferritin concentrations (Δ 2.2 [4.2] μg/L vs Δ -0.3 [3.4] μg/L; P = .048) between baseline and post intervention. The other iron status biomarkers were not affected by the intervention.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study found that daily vitamin D3-fortified fruit drink supplementation for 8 weeks effectively improved 25(OH)D and iron stores, indicated by increased serum ferritin concentrations, in iron-deficient women. Further research is needed to evaluate its safety, efficacy, feasibility, and optimal food fortification in diverse populations.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to discover short-length anticancer peptides derived from pardaxin 6 through an in silico approach.
METHODS: Fragmented peptides ranging from 5 to 15 amino acids were derived from the pardaxin 6 parental peptide. These peptides were further replaced with one residue and, along with the original fragmented peptides, were predicted for their SVM scores and physicochemical properties. The top 5 derivative peptides were further examined for their toxicity, hemolytic probability, peptide structures, docking models, and energy scores using various web servers. The trend of in silico analysis outputs across 5 to 15 amino acid fragments was further analyzed.
RESULTS: Results showed that when the amino acids were increased, SVM scores of the original fragmented peptides were also increased. Designed peptides had increased SVM scores, which was aligned with previous studies where the single residue replacement transformed the non-anticancer peptide into an anticancer agent. Moreover, in vitro studies validated that the designed peptides retained or enhanced anticancer effects against different cancer cell lines. Interestingly, a decreasing trend was observed in those fragmented derivative peptides.
CONCLUSION: Single residue replacement in fragmented pardaxin 6 was found to produce stronger anticancer agents through in silico predictions. Through bioinformatics tools, fragmented peptides improved the efficiency of marine-derived drugs with higher efficacy and lower hemolytic effects in treating cancers.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess healthcare university students' knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding ChatGPT for academic purposes. It explored chatbot usage frequency, purposes, satisfaction levels, and associations between age, gender, and ChatGPT variables.
METHODOLOGY: Four hundred forty-three undergraduate students at a Malaysian tertiary healthcare institute participated, revealing varying awareness levels of ChatGPT's academic utility. Despite concerns about accuracy, ethics, and dependency, participants generally held positive attitudes toward ChatGPT in academics.
RESULTS: Multiple logistic regression highlighted associations between demographics, knowledge, attitude, and academic ChatGPT use. MBBS students were significantly more likely to use ChatGPT for academics than BDS and FIS students. Final-year students exhibited the highest likelihood of academic ChatGPT use. Higher knowledge and positive attitudes correlated with increased academic usage. Most users (45.8%) employed ChatGPT to aid specific assignment sections while completing most work independently. Some did not use it (41.1%), while others heavily relied on it (9.3%). Users also employed it for various purposes, from generating questions to understanding concepts. Thematic analysis of responses showed students' concerns about data accuracy, plagiarism, ethical issues, and dependency on ChatGPT for academic tasks.
CONCLUSION: This study aids in creating guidelines for implementing GAI chatbots in healthcare education, emphasizing benefits, and risks, and informing AI developers and educators about ChatGPT's potential in academia.
