    INTRODUCTION: Yolk sac tumour (YST) or endodermal sinus tumour is rare and typically seen in gonads.

    CASE REPORT: We described a case of extragonadal vaginal YST in a one year and seven months old girl who presented with vaginal discharge and bleeding, and discuss its differential diagnosis and potential pitfalls in immunohistochemistry. She was found to have a suprapubic mass on examination. The serum alpha fetoprotein was 11919.4 ng/mL. Computed tomography of the pelvis revealed a large 6.4 cm heterogenous pelvic mass. Colposcopic examination of the pelvis showed a fungating vaginal mass that was subsequently confirmed as a yolk sac tumour. Immunohistochemically, the malignant cells were positive toward CKAE1/AE3, AFP and glypican-3, as well as CD117.

    DISCUSSION: Solid pattern extragonadal vaginal YST may morphologically resemble dysgerminoma that is also CD117 positive, while the glandular pattern YST may have clear cytoplasm and is positive for cytokeratin; hence, may resemble clear cell carcinoma. Being mindful of these potential diagnostic caveats is necessary to prevent misdiagnosis.

    Cardiac rhabdomyoma is the most prevalent cardiac tumors in the pediatric population, in close association with tuberous sclerosis complex. It is usually detected antenatally or postnatally by echocardiography. Clinical presentations depend greatly on the size and position of the tumor mass. Interestingly, rhabdomyoma has a propensity to regress spontaneously and is not usually operated upon, unless the patient becomes hemodynamically compromised. Herein, we report an unusual case of surgically treated cardiac rhabdomyoma in a baby boy presented at birth with a progressive enlarging intraventricular mass, complicated with left ventricular outflow tract obstruction 7 weeks later. Histopathological examination of the intracardiac mass revealed sheets of tumor cells with spider-like morphology (known as "spider cells"), confirmed the diagnosis of rhabdomyoma. Close disease monitoring of patient's hemodynamic status in a newly diagnosed cardiac rhabdomyoma is inevitable as the tumor, although rare, may progress.

    INTRODUCTION: Hydatidiform moles (HMs) include complete and partial moles, are the result of abnormal fertilisation. The accurate classification of HMs and its distinction from non-molar specimens is utmost important for clinical management and risk assessment. It is diagnostically challenging if the distinction is based solely on histomorphology with poor interobserver reproducibility, especially in early gestations. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic ability of combined p57 immunohistochemistry and DNA ploidy analysis to distinguish between complete moles, partial moles and non-molar abortus.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included all HMs cases diagnosed in our centre over a six-year period. p57 immunohistochemistry stain was performed. Only nuclear immunoreactivity in >50% of cytotrophoblasts and villous stromal cells was regarded as positive for p57. DNA ploidy status was determined by fluorescence in situ hybridisation. A total of 250 cells from five chorionic villi were counted and were scored as diploid or triploid if more than 10% of nuclei demonstrated two or three signals, respectively.

    RESULTS: A total of 51 cases originally diagnosed by histomorphology as complete mole (n = 18), partial mole (n = 24) and non-molar abortus (n = 9) were recruited. The cases were reclassified based on the p57 immunostaining pattern and DNA ploidy status, into 27 complete moles (p57-/diploid), 9 partial moles (p57+/triploid) and 15 non-molar abortus (p57+/diploid). The diagnostic accuracy by histomorphological features alone in each category: complete moles, partial moles and non-molar abortus was 78.4%, 70.6% and 88.2% respectively.

    CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the importance of the utility of combined p57 immunostain and DNA ploidy analysis in arriving at an accurate diagnosis in HMs. An algorithmic approach utilising these ancillary techniques is advocated in routine diagnostic workup for a more refined diagnostic approach to HMs.

    Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a necessary cause of cervical cancer and its precursors. Increased expression of high-risk hrHPV viral oncogenes in abnormal cells might increase the expression of p16INK4a. We aimed to determine the role of p16INK4a in detecting hrHPV-transformed epithelial cells in liquid-based cervical cytology, and compared the results with hrHPV DNA testing by realtime polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Fifty-seven cytological samples were tested for p16INK4a immunomarker and hrHPV DNA. Test performance of both tests was determined by comparing sensitivity, specificity and predictive values using available histological follow-up data as gold standard. Of 57 samples, 36 (63.2%) showed immunoreactivity for p16INK4a and 43 (75.4%) were hrHPV-infected. A fairly low concordance rate (k = 0.504) between p16INK4a immunolabelling and hrHPV DNA status was noted. For prediction of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) II and worse lesions, p16INK4a had a sensitivity and specificity of 93.5% and 60%; whereas hrHPV DNA testing had a sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 20%. Dual testing by combining p16INK4a and hrHPV showed sensitivity and specificity of 100% and 33.3%. In conclusion, p16INK4a is useful in predicting severity of the cytological abnormalities. Although p16INK4a is more specific but less sensitive than hrHPV in detecting high-grade cervical lesions, a combination of both tests failed to demonstrate significant improvement in diagnostic sensitivity, specificity and predictive value. Larger-scale prospective studies are required to assess further whether this biomarker should be routinely used as primary screening tool independently or in combination with hrHPV testing to improve diagnostic accuracy in cervical cytology.

    INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorder in pregnancy (HDP) represents the most common medical complication in pregnancy. It is the leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) stimulates vascular endothelial cell growth, survival, and proliferation, and they are known to be expressed in human placenta. The aim of this study was to determine the VEGF expression in the placenta of hypertensive and normotensive patients.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective, cross-sectional study from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2015. A total of 30 placentae comprised of 15 hypertensive and 15 normotensive cases were assessed. VEGF expression in placenta was assessed by immunohistochemistry, and the number of syncytial knots was counted.

    RESULTS: Our study showed an increased syncytial knot formation in the placenta of hypertensive mothers. VEGF expression was seen in syncytiotrophoblasts of 14 of the hypertensive cases (14/15, 93.3%), while only two of the normotensive cases were positive (2/15, 13.3%). There were no statistically significant differences in VEGF expression in other placenta cells, that is, cytotrophoblasts (P = 1.0), decidual cells (0.1394), maternal endothelial cells (0.5977), and fetal endothelial cells (P = 1.0).

    CONCLUSIONS: This study showed an increased number of syncytial knots is a consistent histological finding in the placenta of patient with HDP. VEGF expression was significantly increased in syncytiotrophoblasts in placenta of hypertensive group, and it could be used as a biomarker for hypertension.

    BACKGROUND: It is believed that activation of microglia in the central nervous system upon detection of stimulus like lipopolysaccharides provokes neuroinflammation via the production of pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines. The cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties of various folk medicine has been gaining attention as a strategy to combat various disease. This study aimed to assess the anti-neuroinflammatory properties of chloroform extract of in vitro Panax ginseng root culture based on nitric oxide and cytokines production.

    METHODS: The study was initiated with the determination of maximum non-toxic dose (MNTD) of P. ginseng root culture chloroform extract using the MTT assay. The lipopolysaccharides-stimulated BV2 microglia cells were treated with MNTD and ½MNTD of the extract and its anti-neuroinflammatory properties were assessed by measuring the production of nitric oxide (NO) via Griess assay, as well as TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-10 using Quantikine ELISA.

    RESULTS: It was found that the MNTD and ½MNTD of the extract did not play a significant role in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as NO, TNF-α and IL-6. However, the MNTD and ½MNTD of chloroform extract significantly increased the anti-inflammatory IL-10 compared to the untreated cells.

    CONCLUSION: With this, the chloroform extract of P. ginseng root culture potentially exerts anti-neuroinflammatory properties.

    Introduction: Cyclophilin A was reported to be increased in the serum of mothers with preeclampsia, and is implicated in its pathogenesis. This study aimed to determine the expression of cyclophilin A in the placenta of mothers with and without hypertension, and to correlate its expression with maternal complications and adverse perinatal outcomes. Materials and Methods: This study consisted of a total of 70 cases (35 cases of mothers with hypertension, and 35 normotensive mothers as a control). Cyclophilin A immunohistochemistry was performed on a paraffin-embedded tissue section of placenta submitted at full thickness in order to evaluate the expression in fetal endothelial cells, cytotrophoblasts, syncytiotrophoblasts, maternal endothelial cells and decidual cells. The cyclophilin A expression was scored as weak, moderate or strong intensity. Results: The hypertensive group was more likely to have preterm deliveries (p < 0.0001), caesarean sections (p < 0.0001), and infants admitted to the intensive care unit (p < 0.001). Fifty-one percent of the fetal endothelial cells and cytotrophoblasts expressed cyclophilin A in the hypertensive group, compared to only 28.6% in the normotensive group. However, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.086). Conclusion: We found no significant difference in placental cyclophilin A expression between hypertensive and normotensive mothers. There was also no difference in expression in mothers with and without maternal complications and adverse perinatal outcomes.

    Accumulating data indicates that enhancer of zeste homology 2 (EZH2) and isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) are implicated in promoting tumourigenesis in a myriad of malignancies including gliomas. We aimed to determine the immunoexpression of EZH2 in gliomas and its correlation with clinicopathological variables. The prognostic value of the combined immunoexpression of EZH2 and IDH1 was further explored in a retrospective analysis involving 56 patients with histologically confirmed gliomas in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre from 2010 to 2016. The patients were then followed up for a period of five years. EZH2 and IDH1 R132H immunoexpressions were performed and analysed on respective tissue blocks. Five-year progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated by Kaplan−Meier analysis. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were performed to evaluate the value of EZH2 as an independent factor for the prediction of PFS and OS. High EZH2 immunoexpression was demonstrated in 27 (48.2%) gliomas. High EZH2 expression was significantly correlated with older age (p = 0.003), higher tumour grade (p < 0.001), negative IDH1 R132H immunoexpression (p = 0.039), a poor 5-year PFS (mean = 9.7 months, p < 0.001) and 5-year OS (mean = 28.2 months, p = 0.007). In IDH1 R132H-negative gliomas, there was a trend toward shorter 5-year PFS (mean = 8.0 months, p = 0.001) and 5-year OS (mean = 28.7 months, p = 0.06) in gliomas demonstrating high EZH2 expression compared with those with low EZH2 expression. High EZH2 immunoexpression is an unfavourable independent prognostic predictor of poor survival in gliomas. EZH2 analysis might therefore be of clinical value for risk stratification, especially in patients with IDH1 R132H-negative gliomas.

    Secondary malignancies following radiotherapy are well documented, with an estimated incidence of 5%. These may manifest as carcinomas, gliomas, or sarcomas within the previous radiation field. Glioblastoma multiforme following radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma is an uncommon occurrence and carries a poor prognosis, whereas papillary thyroid carcinoma following radiotherapy is well documented, though the exact incidence is not well documented. The occurrence of synchronous radiotherapy-induced malignancy over both sites has not been described in the literature before. We describe a middle-aged gentleman diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme and papillary thyroid carcinoma 6 years after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Though our case is the first reported case of a synchronous tumour of its nature, it is likely that such cases are under-reported. Long-term vigilance for loco-regional radiotherapy-induced secondary malignancies is a must, and the presence of a second distinct secondary malignancy must be entertained.

    Thyroid carcinoma is uncommon. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) represents the majority of differentiated thyroid carcinoma and is a recognised complication of prior exposure to ionizing radiation. Even more uncommon is the synchronous occurrence of PTC with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) as multiple primary malignancies. We report a 33-year-old mother of three who developed asymptomatic thyroid nodule for four years, and neck swelling for the recent ten months. She denied constitutional symptoms or B symptoms, and thyroid profiles were normal. Initially, metastatic thyroid cancer was suspected based on ultrasound scan findings of enlarged left thyroid gland and enlarged supraclavicular lymph nodes (LN). However, fine needle aspiration examinations of the thyroid nodule were inconclusive, and the supraclavicular LN was suspicious of HL. Computerised tomography scan detected a large mass at the thyroid glands and lymphadenopathies in the mediastinal, hilar, subcarinal and axilla with dimensions up to 6 cm. Left hemi-thyroidectomy with left supraclavicular LN biopsy revealed PTC in the left thyroid lobe measuring 38 x 25 x 18 mm, and the left supraclavicular LN was not definitive of HL. Completion thyroidectomy on the right side, bilateral central neck dissection and excision biopsy of the right supraclavicular LN revealed the presence of HL in the right supraclavicular LN, and both HL and metastatic PTC in right central LN. After multidisciplinary discussions, the patient received chemotherapy at four weeks postoperatively and achieved complete remission. This report highlights the importance of patient-centered approach and multidisciplinary consensus within lack of established guidelines, given rarity of the case.

    Giant paratesticular liposarcoma is a rare presentation of paratesticular tumor. We present a case of the largest paratesticular liposarcoma described to date with a weight of 4,100 g and measuring 460 × 210 × 130 mm. It was initially mistaken as an inguinoscrotal hernia until a contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a huge left paratesticular tumor extending from the scrotum to the mid-abdomen. The challenge was to achieve a tumor-free margin orchidectomy due to the poor fat plane of the tumor to the external iliac artery, psoas muscle, descending colon, and anterior abdominal wall. The surgery was started with laparoscopic dissection for the intraabdominal part of tumor from the vital structure, then followed by inguinal radical orchidectomy and inguinal mesh repair. Postoperative histopathological report revealed a paratesticular dedifferentiated liposarcoma with rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation with clear margin. The patient had good recovery post operation.

    INTRODUCTION: Hydatidiform mole is one of the gestational trophoblastic disease and comprises complete (CM) and partial moles (PM), which carries a risk of developing persistence disease, invasive mole or choriocarcinoma. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been discovered in various tissues, including neoplastic tissues. Its role in the pathogenesis of molar pregnancy or as biomarkers are still largely uncertain. The aim of this study is to identify the differentially expressed miRNAs in CM and PM.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using next-generation sequencing, the miRNAs profiles of CM (n=3) and PM (n=3) moles, including placenta of non-molar abortus (n=3) as control were determined. The differentially expressed miRNAs between each group were analysed. Subsequently, bioinformatics analysis using miRDB and Targetscan was utilised to predict target genes.

    RESULTS: We found 10 differentially expressed miRNAs in CMs and PMs, compared to NMAs, namely miR- 518a-5p, miR-423-3p, miR-503-5p, miR-302a-3p, and miR-1323. The other 5 miRNAs were novel, not listed in the known database. The 3 differentially expressed miRNAs in CMs were predicted to commonly target ZTBT46 and FAM73B mRNAs.

    DISCUSSION: miR-518 was consistently observed to be downregulated in CM versus PM, and CM versus NMA. Further bioinformatic analysis to provide insight into the possible role of these miRNAs in the pathogenesis of HMs, progression of disease and as potential diagnostic biomarkers as well as therapeutic targets for HMs is needed.

    INTRODUCTION: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) has a heterogeneous presentation and the progression to end stage renal disease (ESRD) is often influenced by demographics, ethnicity, as well as choice of treatment regimen. In this study, we investigated the long term survival of IgAN patients in our center and the factors affecting it.

    METHODS: This study included all biopsy-proven IgAN patients with ≥ 1year follow-up. Patients with diabetes mellitus at diagnosis and secondary IgAN were excluded. Medical records were reviewed for demographics, clinical presentation, blood pressure, 24-hour urine protein, serum creatinine, renal biopsy and treatment received. The primary outcome was defined as combined event of 50% estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) reduction or ESRD.

    RESULTS: We included 130 (74 females; 56 males) patients of mean age 38.0 ± 14.0 years and median eGFR of 75.2 (interquartile range (IQR) 49.3-101.4) ml/min/1.73m2. Eighty-four (64.6%) were hypertensive at presentation, 35 (26.9%) had nephrotic syndrome and 57 (43.8%) had nephrotic range proteinuria (NRP). Median follow-up duration was 7.5 (IQR 4.0-13.0) years. It was noted that 18 (13.8%) developed ESRD and 34 (26.2%) reached the primary outcome. Annual eGFR decline was -2.1 (IQR -5.3 to -0.1) ml/min/1.73m2/year, with median survival of 20 years. Survival rates from the combined event (50% decrease in eGFR or ESRD) at 10, 20 and 30 years were 80%, 53% and 25%, while survival from ESRD were 87%, 73% and 65%, respectively. In the univariate analysis, time-average proteinuria (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.41, 95% CI 1.77-3.30), eGFR <45ml/min/1.73m2 at biopsy (HR = 2.35, 95% CI 1.03-5.32), hypertension (HR = 2.81, 95% CI 1.16-6.80), mean arterial pressure (HR = 1.02, 95% CI 1.01-1.04), tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis score (HR = 3.77, 95% CI 1.84-7.73), and cellular/fibrocellular crescent score (HR = 2.44, 95% CI 1.19-5.00) were found to be significant. Whereas only time-average proteinuria (TA-proteinuria) remained as a significant predictor in the multivariate analysis (HR = 2.23, 95% CI 1.57-3.16).

    CONCLUSION: In our cohort, TA-proteinuria was the most important predictor in the progression of IgAN, irrespective of degree of proteinuria at presentation.

    Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a devastating lung disorder of preterm infants as a result of an aberrant reparative response following exposures to various antenatal and postnatal insults. Despite sophisticated medical treatment in this modern era, the incidence of BPD remains unabated. The current strategies to prevent and treat BPD have met with limited success. The emergence of stem cell therapy may be a potential breakthrough in mitigating this complex chronic lung disorder. Over the last two decades, the human placenta and umbilical cord have gained increasing attention as a highly potential source of stem cells. Placenta-derived stem cells (PDSCs) and umbilical cord-derived stem cells (UCDSCs) display several advantages such as immune tolerance and are generally devoid of ethical constraints, in addition to their stemness qualities. They possess the characteristics of both embryonic and mesenchymal stromal/stem cells. Recently, there are many preclinical studies investigating the use of these cells as therapeutic agents in neonatal disease models for clinical applications. In this review, we describe the preclinical and clinical studies using PDSCs and UCDSCs as treatment in animal models of BPD. The source of these stem cells, routes of administration, and effects on immunomodulation, inflammation and regeneration in the injured lung are also discussed. Lastly, a brief description summarized the completed and ongoing clinical trials using PDSCs and UCDSCs as therapeutic agents in preventing or treating BPD. Due to the complexity of BPD, the development of a safe and efficient therapeutic agent remains a major challenge to both clinicians and researchers.

    Background:Candida chorioamnionitis is rarely encountered, even though vulvovaginal candidiasis incidence is about 15%. Interestingly, it has characteristic gross and histological findings on the umbilical cord that are not to be missed. Case Report: We report two cases of Candida chorioamnionitis with presence of multiple yellowish and red spots of the surface of the umbilical cord. Microscopically, these consist of microabscesses with evidence of fungal yeasts and pseudohyphae. The yeasts and pseudohyphae were highlighted by periodic acid- Schiff and Grocott methenamine silver histochemical stains. Both cases were associated with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus. Discussion: Peripheral funisitis is a characteristic feature of Candida chorioamnionitis. It is associated with high risk of adverse perinatal and neonatal outcomes, such as preterm delivery, stillbirth and neonatal death. We recommend careful examination of the umbilical cord of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus.

    AIM: The aim of our study was to determine the endocan-1 expression in placenta of hypertensive women, and its association with maternal and fetal outcomes.

    METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study consisted of 21 pregnant women with hypertension and 23 without hypertension. The gestational age ranged from 28 to 39 weeks (hypertensive) and 32 to 40 weeks (normotensive). The paraffin embedded formalin fixed placenta tissue blocks were retrieved from the pathology archives. Endocan immunohistochemistry was performed on tissue sections of full thickness and maternal surface of the placenta. The endocan expression was determined in fetal endothelial cells, maternal endothelial cells, cytotrophoblasts, syncytiotrophoblasts and decidual cells.     The association between maternal COVID-19 infection, placental histomorphology and perinatal outcomes is uncertain. The published studies on how placental structure is affected after SARS-CoV-2 virus in COVID-19-infected pregnant women are lacking. We investigated the effects of maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection on placental histomorphology and pregnancy outcomes. A retrospective cohort study on 47 pregnant women with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, matched with non-infected controls, was conducted. Relevant clinicopathological data and primary birth outcomes were recorded. Histomorphology and SARS-CoV-2 immunohistochemistry analyses of placental tissues were performed. Only 1 of 47 cases showed SARS-CoV-2 immunoreactivity in the syncytiotrophoblasts. Histologically, decidual vasculopathy (n = 22/47, p = 0.004), maternal vascular thrombosis (n = 9/47, p = 0.015) and chronic histiocytic intervillositis (n = 10/47, p = 0.027) were significantly higher in the COVID-19-infected placentas when compared to the control group. Maternal vascular thrombosis was a significant feature in the active COVID-19 group. A significant lower gestational age (p < 0.001)) at delivery and a higher caesarean section rate (p = 0.007) were observed in the active SARS-CoV-2-infected cases, resulting in a significant lower fetal-placental weight ratio (p = 0.022) and poorer Apgar score (p < 0.001). Notably, active (p = 0.027), symptomatic (p = 0.039), severe-critical (p = 0.002) maternal COVID-19 infection and placental inflammation (p = 0.011) were associated with an increased risk of preterm delivery. Altered placental villous maturation and severe-critical maternal COVID-19 infection were associated with an elevated risk of poor Apgar scores at birth (p = 0.018) and maternal mortality (p = 0.023), respectively.

    Leptospirosis is a major zoonotic disease, especially in the tropics, and rodents were known to be carriers of this bacterium. There was established information on Leptospira prevalence among animal reservoirs in human-dominated landscapes from previous literature. However, there was very little focus given comparing the prevalence of Leptospira in a wide range of habitats. An extensive sampling of small mammals from various landscapes was carried out, covering oil palm plantations, paddy fields, recreational forests, semi-urbans, and wet markets in Peninsular Malaysia. This study aims to determine the prevalence of pathogenic Leptospira in a diversity of small mammals across different landscapes. Cage-trapping was deployed for small mammals' trappings, and the kidneys of captured individuals were extracted, for screening of pathogenic Leptospira by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using LipL32 primer. Eight microhabitat parameters were measured at each study site. Out of 357 individuals captured, 21 (5.9%) were positive for pathogenic Leptospira of which recreational forest had the highest prevalence (8.8%) for landscape types, whereas Sundamys muelleri shows the highest prevalence (50%) among small mammals' species.     OBJECTIVE: The uptake of cervical cancer screening is poor, especially in developing countries. Thus, pregnancy represents a good opportunity to have the test done. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of abnormal Pap smear among pregnant women during their antenatal check-ups.

    STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study involving five hundred and ninety-six women was recruited over a 1-year duration from 15th January 2018 until 14th January 2019 in a tertiary referral center, in Malaysia. Pap smears were performed on all consented pregnant women using liquid-based cytology and the results were obtained to evaluate the prevalence of abnormal Pap smear during pregnancy. Maternal risk factors associated with abnormal Pap smear were identified and the outcomes of abnormal Pap smear were followed up.

    RESULTS: A total of 670 participants were approached and 596 participants agreed to participate, giving a response rate of 89.0 %. Therefore, 587 participants were available for analysis. There were nine unsatisfactory smears (1.5 %). The prevalence of premalignant lesions reported on p % ap smear was 0.8 %. Three respondents had atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) (0.5 %) and two respondents had low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) (0.3 %). Almost one-third (30.3 %) of respondents had an infection and 24 (4.1 %) smears were reported as reactive changes associated with inflammation. Respondents between the age of 20-30 years old had a significant association with an abnormal pre-cancerous smear (p = 0.000) as well as nulliparity (p = 0.0.40). There was no significant association between height, weight, BMI, sexual partner, age of first intercourse, smoking habit, history of sexually transmitted disease and history of abnormal Pap smear.

    CONCLUSION: The prevalence of abnormal pre-cancerous smears during pregnancy is low. However, it is desirable to perform cervical screening as it provides an opportunity to no screening at all.

    INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) exerts a great impact on the placenta and reflects changes on placentas both morphological and functionally. The aims of this study are to evaluate the prevalence of placental histopathological lesions in pregnancies complicated by GDM compared to gestational age-matched controls, and their association with maternal and fetal complications.

    METHODS: Fifty-four singleton GDM-complicated pregnancies were recruited and compared to 33 consecutive normal pregnancies. Two pathologists, blinded to all clinical data, reviewed and evaluated all histological samples of the placentas in accordance with Amsterdam criteria. Relevant demographic, clinical data and primary birth outcomes were recorded.
