    AIM: This study aims to find the prevalence of MIH in children in the city of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, utilising the current standardised guidelines for diagnosis and calibration.

    BACKGROUND: Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) prevalence in paediatric patients has been widely studied. However, most of the available studies have utilised criteria that did not offer consistent diagnostic and calibration tools, which resulted in incomparable results.

    METHODS: Cross-sectional study. One hundred sixty-two school children aged 7-9 years in the city of Fujairah, UAE have been randomly selected and orally examined for the presence of MIH lesions. This was conducted following Ghanim et al. [2015] guidelines and after calibrating examiners following Ghanim et al. [2017] training manual.

    CONCLUSION: MIH prevalence was high in the city of Fujairah, UAE. More studies utilising the standardised criteria are required for valid comparisons. Further research on the aetiology of MIH is also needed.

    The displacement of a dental implant into the maxillary sinus may lead to implant failure due to exposure of the apical third or the tip of the implant beyond the bone, resulting in soft tissue growth. This case report discusses dental implant placement in the upper first molar area with maxillary sinus involvement of approximately 2 mm. A new technique for progressive implant loading was used, involving immediately loaded implants with maxillary sinus perforation and low primary stability. Follow-up was performed with resonance frequency analysis and compared with an implant placed adjacent in the upper second premolar area using a conventional delayed loading protocol. Implants with maxillary sinus involvement showed increasing stability during the healing period. We found that progressive implant loading may be a safe technique for the placement of immediately loaded implants with maxillary sinus involvement.

    This proof-of-concept study proposes a novel sensing mechanism for selective and label-free detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). It is realized by surface chemistry functionalization of silica nanoparticles (NPs) with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES). The primary amine anchored to the surface of the silica nanoparticles (SiO2-NH2) acts as a capturing probe for TNT target binding to form Meisenheimer amine-TNT complexes. A colorimetric change of the self-assembled (SAM) NP samples from the initial green of a SiO2-NH2 nanoparticle film towards red was observed after successful attachment of TNT, which was confirmed as a result of the increased separation between the nanoparticles. The shift in the peak wavelength of the reflected light normal to the film surface and the associated change of the peak width were measured, and a merit function taking into account their combined effect was proposed for the detection of TNT concentrations from 10-12 to 10-4 molar. The selectivity of our sensing approach is confirmed by using TNT-bound nanoparticles incubated in AptamerX, with 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) and toluene used as control and baseline, respectively. Our results show the repeatable systematic color change with the TNT concentration and the possibility to develop a robust, easy-to-use, and low-cost TNT detection method for performing a sensitive, reliable, and semi-quantitative detection in a wide detection range.

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the stress distribution in tooth supported 5-unit fixed partial denture (FPD) having tooth as pier abutment using rigid and nonrigid connectors respectively, under simultaneous and progressive loading.

    MATERIAL AND METHODS: The three-dimensional (3D) finite element program (ANSYS software) was used to construct the mathematical model. Two 5-unit FPD'S were simulated, one with rigid connector and another one with nonrigid connector. For analysis, each of these models were subjected to axial and oblique forces under progressive loading (180, 180, 120, 120, 80 N force on first and second molars, premolars and canine respectively) and simultaneous loading (100, 100, 100, 100, 100 N force on first and second molars, premolars and canine respectively).

    RESULTS: The rigid and nonrigid connector design have effect on stress distribution in 5-unit FPDs with pier abutments.

    CONCLUSION: Oblique forces produce more stresses than vertical forces. Nonrigid connector resulted in decrease in stress at the level of prosthesis and increase in stress at the level of alveolar crest.

    A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of root canal anatomical variations are essential for successful root canal treatment. Mandibular molar teeth show considerable variations in their external and internal radicular morphology that require special attention from dental practitioners to provide the best clinical outcomes to the patients. This report aims to present root canal treatment of a mandibular first molar that has six separate root canals (three root canals in the mesial roots and three in the distal roots [236 M3 D3]). This report points out the importance of proper exploration for identifying additional canals in mandibular molars.

    There is a paucity of information concerning vital pulp treatment outcomes in the undergraduate teaching setting. This study aimed to determine which type of deciduous molar, arch location, type of vital pulp therapy, and the number of carious surfaces involved had a better prognosis when carried out by undergraduate dental students. The method used was the review of clinical records of 590 patients with 600 deciduous molars, that visited the outpatient undergraduate dental clinics for vital pulp therapy. Statistical analysis used to determine the associations of tooth type, arch location, treatment type, and the number of carious surfaces involved in successful outcomes was logistic regression analysis with significance set at p < 0.05. According to the regression analysis model results, there was a significant association based on tooth type (p < 0.05) and arch location (p = 0.003). In addition, there was a significant association based on the type of treatment performed (p = 0.036). However, there was no significant association in success rates based on the number of carious surfaces involved (p = 0.873). In conclusion, second deciduous molars and maxillary deciduous molars had a better overall prognosis, and indirect pulp therapy was revealed to be more highly associated with successful treatment outcomes in comparison to ferric sulfate pulpotomy in our setting.

    The palatal root of the first permanent molar is the most commonly deflected root into the maxillary sinus during extraction. A rational approach to the surgical removal of a root from the antrum is important. Some surgeons prefer the alveolar approach while others prefer the Caldwell-Luc operation. A case is presented where the palatal root tip of the left upper first molar was removed from the maxillary sinus by the Caldwell-Luc approach with simultaneous closure of the oro-antral fistula resulting from dental extraction. A fibreoptic light probe was used. The advantages and disadvantages as well as how to avoid the common complications of this surgical technique are discussed. A good result was achieved with successful removal of the root and no loss of sensibility of the teeth and/or gum for this case.

    The purpose of this study were to compare the emergence profiles of crowns with their contralateral tooth, in vitro, and to determine if there is any association between the design of tooth preparations and the resultant emergence profile. 50 working models used for single crown construction were examined. Measurements of the faciolingual width of the crowns and contralateral teeth were taken using digital calipers. Internal line angles and the margin width of dies and the emergence profile of the corresponding crowns were measured from longitudinally sectioned polyvinylsiloxane indices mounted on a flat-bed scanner using image analysis software. Using Students t tests, no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were found for shoulder width (mean 0.94 ± 0.23mm), internal line angle (mean 105.83 ± 13.57°) or emergence profiles (28.56 ± 12.95°) in the different (anterior, premolar or molar) preparations or crowns.     Kajian ini dijalankan untuk menentukan kesan perencatan fi tat terhadap bioavailabiliti kalsium (Ca), ferum (Fe) dan zink (Zn) dalam produk kacang soya tempatan terpilih. Fitat menyebabkan kesan perencatan terhadap penyerapan mineral seperti Ca, Fe dan Zn dengan membentuk kompleks yang tidak larut dan tidak dapat dicernakan. Kesan perencatan fi tat terhadap bioavailabiliti mineral seperti Ca, Fe dan Zn telah dianggarkan dengan nisbah molar fi tat kepada mineral. Kandungan fi tat ditentukan dengan menggunakan kaedah pertukaran anion dan kandungan mineral ditentukan dengan Spektrofotometer Serapan Atom (AAS). Produk kacang soya dibeli dari pasar malam dan gerai makanan yang terletak di Cheras dan Sri Rampai, Kuala Lumpur. Setiap sampel yang dibeli dari kedua- dua lokasi dianalisis secara duplikat. Kajian ini mendapati kek soya dan kesemua masakan yang mengandungi tempe tidak mempunyai kandungan fi tat. Ini mungkin disebabkan oleh kehadiran R. oligosporus yang menghasilkan fi tase lalu menghidrolisiskan kandungan fi tat semasa proses fermentasi tempe. Terdapat lima jenis sampel makanan yang mempunyai nisbah molar fi tat/Ca > 0.24, sepuluh jenis sampel makanan dengan nisbah molar fi tat/ Fe > 1, lapan jenis sampel makanan mempunyai nisbah molar fi tat/ Zn > 15 dan satu jenis sampel makanan mempunyai nisbah molar [fi tat x Ca]/ Zn > 200. Keputusan nisbah molar fi tat/ mineral dari kajian ini menganggarkan bioavailabiliti Ca, Fe dan Zn yang rendah. Kesimpulannya, kek soya dan masakan mengandungi tempe mempunyai bioavailabiliti mineral yang tinggi manakala tau-hoo pok bakar mempunyai bioavailabiliti mineral yang rendah.

    In the present case, granuloma formation and loss of tooth vitality following the use of bone wax in third molar surgery in a 16 - year- old male patient were reported. Endodontic and surgical treatments were carried out on the patient. As foreign body granulomatous reaction to bone wax is not uncommon in the literature review, alternative haemostatic agents should be taken into consideration to avoid any potential complications and untoward effects of using bone wax for haemorrhage control in surgical procedures.

    Sufficient knowledge on the root and root canal anatomy is essential for practicing root canal treatment. The mesiobuccal roots of maxillary molar teeth present an endodontic challenge due to their wide variability and complexity of their internal morphological landmarks. A review on the literature indicates that the prevalence of a third mesiobuccal root canal in the mesiobuccal root of maxillary molar teeth may reach 9%, and the root canal configuration usually is type XV (3-2). These reported data reveal the importance of absolute awareness for this anatomical aberration that requires special attention from dental practitioners while commencing root canal treatment in maxillary molar teeth. Hence, this article aims to report and describe the management of a maxillary first molar tooth with three mesiobuccal root canals, but with an unusual configuration.

    The modelling of a three-dimensional (3-D) molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) was developed to study the effects of gas flow direction (co-flow and counter-flow) in anode and cathode on the generated power density by solving the mass and momentum conservation equations, electrochemical reaction and heat transfer. The simulation result of the co-flow temperature distribution was compared with the experimental data obtained from open literature. The molar fraction distribution of gases in the anode and cathode gas channels and temperature distribution across the cell were compared between two different flow directions. Furthermore, the performance of MCFC, which operates in the temperature range of 823 - 1023 K, was analysed by comparing the generated power density. The results showed that MCFC with co-flow attained higher power density compared to that of counter-flow at 873 K. However, at higher temperature of 1023 K, the generated power density was the same for both gas flow directions.

    A series of (Li20)x(B203)1-x has been synthesized with mole fraction x=0.10, 0.15,020,025 and 0.30 mol% using melt quenching method. The structure of the glass system was determined by FTIR and X-ray diffraction. The density and molar volume were determined and the density increases with Li20 content whereas molar volume decreases with Li20. Refractive index of glass samples were measured by ellipsometer. Refractive index increases with increase of Li20. The absorption spectra of the studied glass showed that position of fundamental absorption edge shifts to longer wavelength with Li20. Optical band gap varies from 0.10 to 222 eV and Urbach energy varies from 2.91 to 1.55 eV. The variation in optical band gap and Urbach energy were due to the variation in the glass structure.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between partially erupted impacted mandibular third and the risk for angle of mandible fracture. We designed a retrospective cohort study composed of patients who presented with mandible fractures. The predictor variables were the presence and angulation of the partially erupted impacted mandibular third molar and the distance between the apices of the mandibular third molar and the inferior border of the mandible. The outcome variable was the presence or absence of an angle fracture. Patients with a partially erupted impacted mandibular third molars had a 3.3 times greater chance of an angle fracture than patients without mandibular third molars (p<001). No significant association was found between the distance of the apices and angulation of the mandibular third molars to the inferior border of the mandible with angle of mandible fractures. Our findings highlight the need for enforcement of proper protective gear in young individuals who are at high risk for facial trauma.

    OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to assess and compare the marginal gap of conventionally used metal onlays and new resin nanoceramic (RNC) (Lava Ultimate block) onlays.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an in vitro study using two extracted sound human mandibular molars. One tooth was prepared to receive the metal onlays and another one for the RNC onlays which were fabricated using the computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. Twelve metals and 12 ceramic onlays were fabricated before they were placed at their respective preparation and examined under the Leica stereomicroscope, M125C (Leica Microsystems, Wetzlar, Germany) for a marginal analysis. The gap width was measured at 10 predefined landmarks which included 3 points on the buccal and lingual surfaces each and 2 points each on the mesial and distal surfaces, respectively.

    STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Mann-Whitney post hoc test was used for statistical analysis (P ≤ 0.05).

    RESULTS: Overall, the RNC onlays showed significant lower marginal gap with the exception of the landmarks 5 and 6 (on distolingual) and no significant difference at landmark 7 (on midlingual). It was observed that the marginal gap were all within the clinically acceptable limit of 120 μm.

    CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the RNC CAD/CAM onlays are a promising alternative to the metal onlays.

    This study aimed to assess the variability of the lower third molar (tooth 38 and 48) development in Northeast Malaysian population with respect to the side of dentition, to generate age prediction models and to compare the outcome with other studies. A total of 1080 orthopantomograms of Northeast Malaysian population aged between 14 and 25 years (540 males and 540 females) from the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia's archive which met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and the maturity stages of tooth 38 and 48 were scored using Demirjian's stages (A-H). The findings showed a wide variation of the development of lower third molars in the Northeast Malaysian population. The roots developed earlier in males than in females. The development of the dentition on opposite sides of the mandible was synchronously in females and males. A multiple regression analysis shows that 71.1% of variance in age was explained by sex and developmental stage of tooth 48. An age prediction model was generated from the regression analysis: [Age = 7.117 + 1.907*(stage of tooth 48) - 0.432*(sex)] with mean prediction errors between -0.17 to 3.14 years. The obtained data in the current study are useful for references and determining age of unidentified human remains for identification investigation.

    The third molar development (TMD) has been widely utilized as one of the radiographic method for dental age estimation. By using the same radiograph of the same individual, third molar eruption (TME) information can be incorporated to the TMD regression model. This study aims to evaluate the performance of dental age estimation in individual method models and the combined model (TMD and TME) based on the classic regressions of multiple linear and principal component analysis. A sample of 705 digital panoramic radiographs of Malay sub-adults aged between 14.1 and 23.8 years was collected. The techniques described by Gleiser and Hunt (modified by Kohler) and Olze were employed to stage the TMD and TME, respectively. The data was divided to develop three respective models based on the two regressions of multiple linear and principal component analysis. The trained models were then validated on the test sample and the accuracy of age prediction was compared between each model. The coefficient of determination (R²) and root mean square error (RMSE) were calculated. In both genders, adjusted R² yielded an increment in the linear regressions of combined model as compared to the individual models. The overall decrease in RMSE was detected in combined model as compared to TMD (0.03-0.06) and TME (0.2-0.8). In principal component regression, low value of adjusted R(2) and high RMSE except in male were exhibited in combined model. Dental age estimation is better predicted using combined model in multiple linear regression models.

    Teeth are the most durable structures in the human body. The timing and sequence of their development, as contained in dental development charts, have been used as valid criteria for age determination. The third molars however are the last teeth to erupt and are regarded as the most variable in the dentition. Age estimation in a legal context, using developing third molars must be carefully applied otherwise justice may miscarry. A case of wrongful use of the technique is presented here.
