Objectives: An adequate disease-related knowledge is important in treatment and management of ailments. Within this context, patients are needed to have correct knowledge and positive attitude especially when they are faced with an emergence of chronic diseases. The aim of this study therefore is to assess the level of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) awareness and disease related attitude among general population at Bujang Valley, Merbok, Kedah, Malaysia.
Methods: A questionnaire based, cross sectional study was conducted. The Diabetes Attitude Scale was used to assess the knowledge and attitude of respondents towards T2DM. Data was described descriptively and SPSS v.22 was used for data analysis.
Results: Out of three hundred and seventy seven respondents, majority of the respondents (n=156, 41.4%) were in age group of more than 40 years old and the cohort was dominated by Malay ethnic group. Females subjugated over males (n=229, 60.7%) and the highest number of respondents were working as businessman (n=115, 30.5%). Corresponding to the marital status, majority of the respondent were married (n=247, 65.5%). Majority of the respondents (n=274, 72.7%) were reported as healthy with no chronic disease. The respondents reported certain misapprehensions where they believed that T2DM have lesser complications, blood glucose control is needed for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus only and the emotional effects of T2DM are minor.
Conclusions: The study reported insufficient level of knowledge among the respondents in management of T2DM. General population needs to have good collaboration with healthcare professionals to get more education and knowledge related to T2DM for their empowerment.
Polymer composites have been extensively fabricated given that they are well-fitted for a variety of applications, especially concerning their mechanical properties. However, inadequate outcomes, mainly regarding their electrical performance, have limited their significant potential. Hence, this study proposed the use of multiple fillers, with different geometries, in order to improve the electrical conductivity of a polymer composite. The fabricated composite was mixed, using the ball milling method, before being compressed by a hot press machine at 3 MPa for 10 min. The composite plate was then measured for both its in-plane and through-plane conductivities, which were 3.3 S/cm, and 0.79 S/cm, respectively. Furthermore, the experimental data were then verified using a predicted electrical conductivity model, known as a modified fibre contact model, which considered the manufacturing process, including the shear rate and flow rate. The study indicated that the predicted model had a significant trend and value, compared to the experimental model (0.65 S/cm for sample S1). The resultant fabricated composite materials were found to possess an excellent network formation, and good electrical conductivity for bipolar plate application, when applying compression pressure of 3 MPa for 10 min.
Nucleic acid segregation and compartmentalization were likely essential functions that primitive compartment systems resolved during evolution. Recently, polyester microdroplets generated from dehydration synthesis of various α-hydroxy acids (αHA) were suggested as potential primitive compartments. Some of these droplets can differentially segregate and compartmentalize organic dyes, proteins, and nucleic acids. However, the previously studied polyester microdroplets included limited αHA chemical diversity, which may not reflect the chemical diversity available in the primitive Earth environment. Here, we increased the chemical diversity of polyester microdroplet systems by combinatorially adding an αHA monomer with a basic side chain, 4-amino-2-hydroxybutyric acid (4a2h), which was incorporated with different ratios of other αHAs containing uncharged side chains to form combinatorial heteropolyesters via dehydration synthesis. Incorporation of 4a2h in the polymers resulted in the assembly of some polyester microdroplets able to segregate fluorescent RNA or potentially acquire intrinsic fluorescent character, suggesting that minor modifications of polyester composition can significantly impact the functional properties of primitive compartments. This study suggests one process by which primitive chemical systems can increase diversity of compartment "phenotype" through simple modifications in their chemical composition.
Dental caries is a common dental health problem affecting all age groups across the globe. Accurate detection and assessment of dental caries are crucial for effective treatment and preventive measures. Teledentistry, which involves remote dental assessment using digital technologies, has shown promise as a potential tool for caries screening. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare the dental caries scores obtained from clinical examinations and teledentistry assessments. Literature searches were conducted across databases such as PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, the Web of Science, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and PsycINFO by using predefined search terms and inclusion criteria. Two reviewers separately extracted the data. The study designs, evaluation techniques, dentition types, mean scores, and follow-up times of the included studies were examined. The New Castle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the risk of bias. Review Manager (RevMan) (computer program) Version 5.4, The Cochrane Collaboration 2020, was used for the quantitative assessment of the data. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The findings revealed that teledentistry assessments (based on intraoral photographs captured using smartphones or intraoral cameras) demonstrated comparable accuracy to traditional clinical examinations in detecting and assessing dental caries. Among the four studies that were quantitatively analysed, no significant difference was noted at p = 0.09. A mean difference of 0.64 (95% confidence interval (CI): -0.10; 1.38) suggested that clinical examination and teledentistry-based checkup were on par with each other for the detection of dental caries. The New Castle-Ottawa scale (NOS) grading indicated that the studies were of good quality. Teledentistry may be an effective approach for identifying and evaluating dental caries. However, further research is required to substantiate the findings observed in the present review.
Left ventricular (LV) lead implantation for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is associated with lead dislodgement rates ranging from 3% to 10%, and some implant approaches to prevent dislodgement may contribute to suboptimal CRT response. We report our early human experience with an LV lead with a side helix for active fixation to the coronary vein wall.
In the last decade, carbon quantum dots (CQDs), a novel class of carbon-based nanomaterials, have received increasing attention due to their distinct properties. Carbon Quantum Dots/Titanium Dioxide (CQDs/TiO2) Nanocomposites were reported as potent compounds against SARS-COV-2. In this manuscript, citric acid is the carbon precursor used to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs). Using a green approach, the synthesized CQD fabricates the Carbon Quantum Dots/Titanium Dioxide (CQDs/TiO2) Nanocomposites. Synthesized composites were characterized by using a UV-visible spectrophotometer, Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). Methylene blue was used to check the Photocatalytic activity of synthesized (CQDs/TiO2) nanocomposites of different concentrations. Computational modeling of agglomerates of CQD and TiO2 nanoparticles with the formula TiO2…….. Ti253O506 demonstrated two stages of the nanocomposite formation, including the formation of agglomerates with the neutral and salt-like structures with the total gain in the Gibbs free energy - 38.397 kcal/mole. In silico, Molecular docking studies of citric acid were evaluated against SARS-COV-2 protein to understand their mechanism and key amino acid interactions along with standard drug remdesivir. The photocatalytic activity of CQDs/TiO2 showed extremely promising results. Based on this study, the proposed mechanism of action of these compounds is reported. A detailed investigation of CQDs/TiO2 against SARS-CoV-2 is needed, which is another part of the research in our next manuscript.
The widespread discharge of organic dyes into the wastewater from various industrial processes has develop a major environmental apprehension in the modern world. To tackle such environmental issues, we are synthesizing a novel catalyst of composition, Ba1 - xCoxDyyFe12-yO19 (x = y = 0.02-0.06) using sol-gel auto-combustion (SGAC) for the photocatalytic eradication of malachite green dye (MGD). The fabricated sample show single-phase hexagonal structure. The hexagonal-shaped grains are seen in the field emission spectroscopy (FESEM) visuals of prepared hexaferrites. The oxidation states of every element present in the developed specimens are investigated using the X-ray photoelectron spectrophotometer scrutinized. The specific surface area (SSA) of the HF1 sample is 3.523 m2/g, whereas the band gap values of co-doped barium hexaferrites are found within the range of 1.61 to 1.75 eV. The magnetic analysis of developed hexaferrites indicates that increasing the concentration of Dy and Co, raised in the saturation magnetization and declines in coercivity. The conducted photocatalytic evaluations reveal that the removal efficiencies of 89.85%, 91.12%, and 94.36% are obtained for the prepared HF1, HF2, and HF3 hexaferrites after 90 min of natural irradiation. Moreover, the capability for the reusability of the synthesized hexaferrites is assessed over a series of five consecutive experimental cycles. As a result, this research delves at potential applications of co-doped BaFe12O19 hexaferrites in the photocatalytic eradication of MGD for environmental applications.
Water pollution from the industrial dyes is a serious hazard to ecosystems, and addressing this issue is a significant challenge. To address these issues, we are fabricated BaDyxFe12-xO19 (x = 0.02 to 0.06) by sol-gel auto-ignition (SGA) technique. Several characterizations were used to scrutinize the structural, optical, photocatalytic, and magnetic traits of the produced samples. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the sample revels the hexagonal crystal structure. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) of both samples reveal the existence of agglomerated grains showing hexagonal shapes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirm the oxidation state of every element present in the synthesized nanomaterials. The specific surface area was found to be 1.069 m2/g for BDF1 and 1.466 m2/g for BDF3. The band gap of the BDF1, BDF2, and BDF3 samples are found 2.16, 2.12, and 1.99 eV. The photocatalytic efficacy of the catalysts was examined by removal of the CR in natural light. A notable degradation efficiency of 89.29% are achieved by the BDF3 catalyst within 90 minutes under natural sunlight irradiation. The results demonstrate a straightforward and efficient approach for producing photocatalytic materials that are highly effective for the elimination of dye pollutants in wastewater treatment.
In patients with acute kidney injury progressively converting into chronic kidney disease (CKD), proteinuria and high blood pressure predict progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Although, Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) regulates blood pressure and kidney disease through both direct and indirect mechanisms. RAAS blockers that act at the level of angiotensin or lower in the cascade can cause compensatory increases in the plasma renin and angiotensin II level. Here, in this review article, we are exploring the evidence-based on RAAS blockade action releases of aldosterone and hypothesizing the molecular mechanism for converting the acute kidney injury into chronic kidney disease to end-stage renal disease.
Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at a significantly higher risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia, also termed myeloid leukemia associated with DS (ML-DS). In contrast to the highly favorable prognosis of primary ML-DS, the limited data that are available for children who relapse or who have refractory ML-DS (r/r ML-DS) suggest a dismal prognosis. There are few clinical trials and no standardized treatment approach for this population. We conducted a retrospective analysis of international study groups and pediatric oncology centers and identified 62 patients who received treatment with curative intent for r/r ML-DS between year 2000 to 2021. Median time from diagnosis to relapse was 6.8 (range, 1.1-45.5) months. Three-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were 20.9 ± 5.3% and 22.1 ± 5.4%, respectively. Survival was associated with receipt of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) (hazard ratio [HR], 0.28), duration of first complete remission (CR1) (HR, 0.31 for > 12 months) and attainment of remission after relapse (HR, 4.03). Patients who achieved complete remission (CR) before HSCT, had an improved OS and EFS of 56.0 ± 11.8% and 50.5 ± 11.9%, respectively compared to those who underwent HSCT without CR (3-year OS and EFS of 10.0 ± 9.5%). Treatment failure after HSCT was predominantly because of disease recurrence (52%) followed by treatment-related mortality (10%). The prognosis of r/r ML-DS remains dismal even in the current treatment period and serve as a reference point for current prognostication and future interventional studies. Clinical trials aimed at improving the survival of patients with r/r ML-DS are needed.
Diabetes mellitus is a global health concern associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Inadequate control of diabetes leads to chronic complications and higher mortality rates, which emphasizes the importance of achieving glycemic targets. Although glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is the gold standard for measuring glycemic control, it has several limitations. Therefore, in recent years, along with the emergence of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology, glycemic control modalities have moved beyond HbA1c. They encompass modern glucometrics, such as glycemic variability (GV) and time-in-range (TIR). The key advantage of these newer metrics over HbA1c is that they allow personalized diabetes management with person-centric glycemic control. Basal insulin analogues, especially second-generation basal insulins with properties such as longer duration of action and low risk of hypoglycemia, have demonstrated clinical benefits by reducing GV and improving TIR. Therefore, for more effective and accurate diabetes management, the development of an integrated approach with second-generation basal insulin and glucometrics involving GV and TIR is the need of the hour. With this objective, a multinational group of endocrinologists and diabetologists reviewed the existing recommendations on TIR, provided their clinical insights into the individualization of TIR targets, and elucidated on the role of the second-generation basal insulin analogues in addressing TIR.
