OBJECTIVE: In this research, we investigated how miR-138-siRNAs-HIF-1a and miR-21-siRNAs-HVCN1 affect apoptosis in hypoxic mice.
METHODS: On the first and third days after delivery, the YKL40, HIF-1a, HVCN1, and S100b genes were compared between two groups of preterm infants with and without maternal inflammation. Afterward, the miRNAs were transfected into cell lines to monitor variations in YKL40, HIF-1a, HVCN1, and S100b gene expression and nerve cell apoptosis. We changed the expression of S100b, HVCN1, and HIF-1a genes by using specific siRNAs injected into mice. Using real-time PCR, Western blotting, flow cytometry (FCM), and immunofluorescence, and changes in gene expression were evaluated (IHC).
RESULTS: HVCN1 gene expression showed a strong negative correlation with epilepsy in both groups of infants (P<0.001). Significant correlations between epilepsy and the expression levels of the S100b, YKL40, and HIF-1a genes were found (P<0.001). According to FCM, after transfecting miRNA-431 and miRNA-34a into cell lines, the apoptosis index (A.I.) were 41.6 3.3 and 34.5 5.2%, respectively, while the A.I. were 9.6 2.7 and 7.1 4.2% after transfecting miRNA-21 and miRNA-138. MiR-138-siRNAs-HIF-1a and miR-21-siRNAs-HVCN1 were simultaneously injected into hypoxic mice, and IHC double-labeling revealed that this reduced apoptosis and seizures compared to the hypoxic group.
CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that miR-138-siRNAs-HIF-1a and miR-21-siRNAs-HVCN1 injections prevent cerebral ischemia-induced brain damage in hypoxia mice by increasing HVCN1 and HIF-1a and decreasing S100b, which in turn lessens apoptosis and epilepsy in hypoxic mice.
METHODS: Eligible subjects were recruited from the Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes birth cohort. AL measurement was performed using IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) at 3 and 6 years. Anthropometric measurements at birth, cycloplegic refraction at 3 and 6 years, questionnaires on the children's behavioural habits at 2 years and parental spherical equivalent refraction were performed. Multivariable linear regression model with generalised estimating equation was performed to determine factors associated with AL elongation.
RESULTS: 273 eyes of 194 children were included. The mean AL increased from 21.72±0.59 mm at 3 years to 22.52±0.66 mm at 6 years (p<0.001). Myopic eyes at 6 years had greater AL elongation (1.02±0.34 mm) compared with emmetropic eyes (0.85±0.25 mm, p=0.008) and hyperopic eyes (0.74±0.16 mm, p<0.001). The 95th percentile limit of AL elongation was 1.59 mm in myopes, 1.34 mm in emmetropes and 1.00 mm in hyperopes. Greater birth weight (per 100 g, β=0.010, p=0.02) was significantly associated with greater AL elongation from 3 to 6 years, while parental and other behavioural factors assessed at 2 years were not (all p≥0.08).
CONCLUSION: In this preschool cohort, AL elongates at an average length of 0.80 mm from 3 to 6 years, with myopes demonstrating the greatest elongation. The differences in 95th percentile limits for AL elongation between myopes, emmetropes and hyperopes can be valuable information in identifying myopia development in preschool children.
METHODS: A standardized questionnaire following the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) guidelines was investigator-administered to a clinically and epidemiology well-defined allergic cohort of 13,561 young Chinese adults aged 19-22. Information on their sociodemographic, lifestyle, dietary habits, and personal and family medical atopic histories were obtained. Allergic sensitization was assessed by a skin prick test to mite allergens. Spearman's rank-order correlation was used to assess the correlation between the intake frequencies of 16 food types. Dietary patterns were identified using principal component analysis. Four corresponding dietary scores were derived to examine the association of identified dietary patterns with allergic sensitization and AD exacerbations through a multivariable logistic regression that controlled for age, gender, parental eczema, BMI, and lifestyle factors.
RESULTS: The correlation is the strongest between the intake of butter and margarine (R = 0.65). We identified four dietary patterns, "high-calorie foods", "plant-based foods", "meat and rice", and "probiotics, milk and eggs", and these accounted for 47.4% of the variance in the dietary habits among the subjects. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted to gauge the knowledge, attitude, and perception of pharmacists working in various cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the capital city, Islamabad, from February to May 2023. METHODS: Prospective follow-up of 25 patients who presented to a tertiary institution with recurrent AV access thrombosis and treated with anticoagulation according to SEP following successful thrombectomy. Patency and safety outcomes of SEP were studied.
RESULTS: The participants were 66.4 ± 10.2 years old and predominantly male (60%) and of Chinese ethnicity (72%). The AV accesses had a median age of 1.4 (0.6, 5.6) years with 60% being non-autogenous arteriovenous access while 40% were autogenous arteriovenous access. Thrombolytic agents (urokinase (72%) or alteplase (28%)) were used in all procedures while adjunct thrombectomy device was used in only four procedures. The mean dose of enoxaparin was 36.0 ± 8.2 mg or 0.64 ± 0.1 mg/kg/day for a mean duration 30.0 days (Interquartile range: 27.5, 31.0). One patient developed minor bleeding episode. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a quasi-experimental approach in which a non-equivalent control group was used in a post-test design. A comparison was carried out with two separate semester cohort students representing the control and intervention groups which had 24 and 30 students, respectively. This study included first-year nursing students that enrolled in a course called "Anatomy and Physiology" course of nursing education at a private university. The control group received all their teaching face-to-face, and the intervention group used information technology and prescribed activities in their online e-book. The self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) tool measures the learners' readiness in self-directed learning in both groups. This scale comprises three subscales which are "self-management," "desire for learning," and "self-control." An independent-samples t-test was conducted to compare self-directed learning readiness in the control and intervention groups. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software to measure the independent t-test.
RESULTS: The self-directed readiness scores were significantly higher in the intervention group with P = 0.019. The intervention group showed a higher mean value on the subscales of self-management and self-control, which demonstrated a significant difference with P values of 0.018 and 0.028, respectively. The subscale desire for learning was insignificant with a P value of 0.166.
CONCLUSION: This study concluded that the overall results demonstrate that incorporating blended learning using e-books for anatomy and physiology courses in nursing education can contribute to students' readiness for self-directed learning. Specifically, the blended learning teaching and learning strategy had a positive impact on nursing students' capacity for self-management and self-control.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 788 participants in three KYL health campaigns from 2017 to 2020. Perceived knowledge (a 5-item Likert scale was used, zero means "very poor" and 4 means "excellent knowledge") and confidence in identifying BC symptoms were studied. A Wilcoxon Matched-Paired Signed-Rank Test was performed to assess the perceived knowledge.
RESULTS: There was a significant improvement in the perceived knowledge Mean (±SD) score (2.84 ± 1.02) versus (4.31 ± 0.66) before and after the campaign (P < 0.01). About 95.6% agreed that the language used in KYL materials was clear and understandable, 89.8% agreed it is acceptable in Malaysian culture, and 80% felt more confident in identifying BC symptoms. Therefore, 90.8% had the intention of breast self-examination and 90.8% would consult a doctor if symptomatic. The majority (92.7%) agreed that the KYL tools clarified the BC tests needed.
CONCLUSION: The KYL tools enhanced perceived BC symptom recognition knowledge and confidence levels.
AIM: The study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of a topical moisturizer containing tocotrienol-rich composition over 12 weeks on patients aged between 1 month and 12 years with mild to moderate AD.
METHODS: We conducted a 12 weeks, prospective, open-label clinical study on the effect of tocotrienol as an adjunct to conventional treatment. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee for Research Involving Human Subject. JKEUPM-2019-274 (NMMR-19-1588-49234).

METHODS: The suggested methodology presents two examples, one with and one without picture augmentation. A balanced dataset meeting the same criteria in both cases is then generated using augmentative methods. The DenseNet-121-rendered model on the Asia Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society (APTOS) and dataset for diabetic retinopathy (DDR) datasets performed exceptionally well when compared to other methods for identifying the five stages of DR.
RESULTS: Our propose model achieved the highest test accuracy of 98.36%, top-2 accuracy of 100%, and top-3 accuracy of 100% for the APTOS dataset, and the highest test accuracy of 79.67%, top-2 accuracy of 92.%76, and top-3 accuracy of 98.94% for the DDR dataset. Additional criteria (precision, recall, and F1-score) for gauging the efficacy of the proposed model were established with the help of APTOS and DDR.
CONCLUSIONS: It was discovered that feeding a model with higher-quality photographs increased its efficiency and ability for learning, as opposed to both state-of-the-art technology and the other, non-enhanced model.
METHODS: An online questionnaire on Google Forms was distributed to all 31 medical schools in Malaysia. The questionnaire consists of 3 sections: the first part surveyed the participants' demographics, the second assessed the participants' attitudes toward AI, and the final part utilizes the Medical Artificial Intelligence Readiness Scale for Medical Students (MAIRS-MS) scale to evaluate their AI readiness.
RESULTS: Three hundred and one students from 17 universities in Malaysia responded to the questionnaire. 87.36% of students agreed that AI will play an essential role in healthcare; 32.55% of students were less likely to consider a career in radiology due to the advancement of AI. The majority of students (71%) felt that teaching in AI will benefit their careers, while 69.44% agreed that all students should receive teaching in AI. Around 44.5% of students felt that they will possess the knowledge required to work with AI upon graduation. On the MAIRS-MS scale, students had a mean score of 21 of 40 for the cognitive factor, 25 of 40 for the ability factor, 10 of 15 for the vision factor, and 11 of 15 for the ethics factor. Overall, Malaysian students had a mean total score of 67±14.8 out of 110.
CONCLUSION: Malaysian medical students have demonstrated awareness of AI and a willingness to learn more about it. More work needs to be done to improve students' AI readiness, particularly their knowledge and application of AI technology. Malaysian universities should start to work on incorporating AI teaching into their curricula.
