A magnetic biocomposite blend of chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol/fly ash (m-Cs-PVA/FA) was developed by adding fly ash (FA) microparticles into the polymeric matrix of magnetic chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (m-Cs-PVA). The effectiveness of m-Cs-PVA/FA as an adsorbent to remove textile dye (reactive orange 16, RO16) from aquatic environment was evaluated. The optimum adsorption key parameters and their significant interactions were determined by Box-Behnken Design (BBD). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicates the significant interactions can be observed between m-Cs-PVA/FA dose with solution pH, and m-Cs-PVA/FA dose with working temperature. Considering these significant interactions, the highest removal of RO16 (%) was found 90.3% at m-Cs-PVA/FA dose (0.06 g), solution pH (4), working temperature (30 °C), and contact time (17.5 min). The results of adsorption kinetics revealed that the RO16 adsorption was better described by the pseudo-second-order model. The results of adsorption isotherm indicated a multilayer adsorption process as well described by Freundlich model with maximum adsorption capacity of 123.8 mg/g at 30 °C. An external magnetic field can be easily applied to recover the adsorbent (m-Cs-PVA/FA). The results supported that the synthesized m-Cs-PVA/FA presents itself as an effective and promising adsorbent for textile dye with preferable adsorption capacity and separation ability during and after the adsorption process.

The release of wastewater from textile dyeing industrial sectors is a huge concern with regard to pollution as the treatment of these waters is truly a challenging process. Hence, this study investigates the triazo bond Direct Blue 71 (DB71) dye decolorization and degradation dye by a mixed bacterial culture in the deficiency source of carbon and nitrogen. The metagenomics analysis found that the microbial community consists of a major bacterial group of Acinetobacter (30%), Comamonas (11%), Aeromonadaceae (10%), Pseudomonas (10%), Flavobacterium (8%), Porphyromonadaceae (6%), and Enterobacteriaceae (4%). The richest phylum includes Proteobacteria (78.61%), followed by Bacteroidetes (14.48%) and Firmicutes (3.08%). The decolorization process optimization was effectively done by using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). The experimental variables of dye concentration, yeast extract, and pH show a significant effect on DB71 dye decolorization percentage. Over a comparative scale, the ANN model has higher prediction and accuracy in the fitness compared to the RSM model proven by approximated R2 and AAD values. The results acquired signify an efficient decolorization of DB71 dye by a mixed bacterial culture.

Response surface methodology-Box–Behnken design (RSM-BBD) was employed to optimize the methyl orange (MO) dye removal efficiency from aqueous solution by cross-linked chitosan-tripolyphosphate/nano-titania compsite (Chi-TPP/NTC). The influence of pertinent parameters, i.e. A: TiO2 loading (0- 50 %), B: dose (0.04-0.14 g), C: pH (4-10), and D: temperature (30-50 oC) on the MO removal efficiency were tested and optimized using RSM-BBD. The F-values of BBD model for MO removal efficiency was 93.4 (corresponding p-value < 0.0001). The results illustrated that the highest MO removal efficiency (87.27 %) was observed at the following conditions: TiO2 loading (50% TiO2), dose (0.09 g), pH = 4.0, and temperature of 40 oC.

The crab carapace is a waste which cannot be decomposed. This waste was used to
remove the Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) and Basic Blue 3 (BB3) from aqueous solution
at different operational parameters such as pH, mass load, the concentrations of dye and
the temperature. The crab collected was modified to obtain quaternized crab (QC) using
    (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride solution (C6H15Cl2NO, 65% w/w
in water). The pH of the dyes solution was varied from pH 4 to 10. The highest adsorption
percentage was achieved at pH 7 for both dyes. Increasing the QC mass for the adsorption
process had granted an increase of dyes removal percentage. The highest adsorption
percentage was achieved at 91.00% for RO16 and 29.40% for BB3 dyes with 7.5 g/L QC
used. However, the adsorption capacity of QC decreased with higher QC mass because the
dye molecules occupied on the surface and prevented other molecules to diffuse into the
QC. At higher concentration beyond 20 mg/L and 10 mg/L of RO16 and BB3, respectively,
the maximum adsorption was achieved at 2.5362 mg/g and 0.6812 mg/g. The adsorption of
both dyes by QC was best fitted using Langmuir isotherm model, explaining the adsorption
mainly occurred as a single layer on the surface of QC. Comparison to the results obtained
from the kinetic models, the adsorption was
chemisorption in nature. According to the
    thermodynamic studies, the adsorption of
RO16 was an exothermic, while BB3 was
    an endorthermic process.

In Malaysia, most colored wastewater from dyeing factories is discharged to the environment causing serious problems. In this paper the influence of several reacting conditions, i.e. H2O2, pH, Ultraviolet (UV) intensity and dye concentration, on the performance of the immobilized system is discussed. The pH of the solution was varied from 3 to 11 while H2O2 concentration tested was from 10(-4) M to 5 x 10(-2) M. UV was tested at 365 nm and 254 nm, while dye concentration ranged from 2.5 x 10(-4) M to 10(-3) M. The influence of the reacting conditions was assessed based on absorbance. Using an OG concentration of 10(-3) M, the degradation increases from 17.8% to 49.7%. Optimum concentration of H2O2 was found to be 5 x 10(-3) M for degradation. Increasing the intensity of the UV light via shorter light wavelength also improves the performance of the system. Increasing the concentration of the dye reduces the overall performance of the system. Using the dye concentration of 2.5 x 10(-4) M (H2O2 = 10(-2) M, lambda = 254 nm, pH = 11), gives a degradation of 93.2%. At dye concentration of 10(-3) M, the performance was reduced to 53.1%.

Horizontal subsurface-flow (HSF) constructed wetland incorporating baffles was developed to facilitate upflow and downflow conditions so that the treatment of pollutants could be achieved under multiple aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic conditions sequentially in the same wetland bed. The performances of the baffled and conventional HSF constructed wetlands, planted and unplanted, in the removal of azo dye Acid Orange 7 (AO7) were compared at the hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 5, 3 and 2 days when treating domestic wastewater spiked with AO7 concentration of 300 mg/L. The planted baffled unit was found to achieve 100%, 83% and 69% AO7 removal against 73%, 46% and 30% for the conventional unit at HRT of 5, 3 and 2 days, respectively. Longer flow path provided by baffled wetland units allowed more contact of the wastewater with the rhizomes, microbes and micro-aerobic zones resulting in relatively higher oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and enhanced performance as kinetic studies revealed faster AO7 biodegradation rate under aerobic condition. In addition, complete mineralization of AO7 was achieved in planted baffled wetland unit due to the availability of a combination of aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic conditions.

The chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/TiO2 composite was synthesized. Two different degrees of deacetylation of chitosan were prepared by hydrolysis to compare the effectiveness of them. The composite was analyzed via field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, weight loss test and adsorption study. The FTIR and XRD results proved the interaction among chitosan, PVA and TiO2 without any chemical reaction. It was found that, chitosan with higher degree of deacetylation has better stability. Furthermore, it also showed that higher DD of chitosan required less time to reach equilibrium for methyl orange. The adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fitted well for isotherm study. Adsorption capacity was higher for the composite containing chitosan with higher DD. The dye removal rate was independent of the dye's initial concentration. The adsorption capacity was increased with temperature and it was found from reusability test that the composite containing chitosan with higher DD is more reusable. It was notable that adsorption capacity was even after 15 runs. Therefore, chitosan/PVA/TiO2 composite can be a very useful material for dye removal.

In this study, chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/TiO2 nanofiber was fabricated via electrospinning at a pump rate of 1.5 mL/h and voltage 6 kV. Field-emission scanning electron microscopic images showed bead free finer nanofiber. Fourier transform infrared spectra proved the formation of strong bond among chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol and TiO2. X-ray powder diffraction showed that TiO2 became amorphous in the composite nanofiber. Toughness and thermal stability of the chitosan/PVA nanofibrous membrane was increased with addition TiO2. The chitosan/PVA/TiO2 nanofibrous membrane was stable at basic medium. But degraded in acidic and water medium after 93 and 162 h, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of congo red obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model. On the other hand, adsorption characteristic of methyl orange fitted well with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity of the resulting membrane for congo red and methyl orange is 131 and 314 mg/g, respectively. However, a high dose of adsorbent was required for congo red.

In this study, effect of degree of deacetylation on property and adsorption capacity of chitosan/polyvinyl Alcohol electrospun membrane has been investigated. Resulting nanofibers were characterized by FESEM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, tensile testing, weight loss test and adsorption test. FESEM result shows, finer nanofiber was fabricated from 42h hydrolyzed chitosan and PVA blend solution. FTIR and XRD result showed a strong interaction between chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol. Higher tensile strength was observed for the nanofiber having 42h hydrolyzed chitosan. Blend solution of chitosan/PVA having low DD chitosan had higher viscosity. The nanofibrous membrane was stable in distilled water, acidic and basic medium. The isotherm study shows that the adsorption capacity (qm) of nanofiber containing higher DD chitosan was higher for Cr(VI). In contrary, the membrane containing chitosan with lower DD showed the higher adsorption capacity for Fe(III) and methyl orange. Moreover, the effect of DD on removal percentage of adsorbate was dependent on the initial concentration of the adsorbate.

A chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/zeolite composite was fabricated in this study. The composite was analyzed through field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis, and weight loss test. FTIR and XRD results revealed a strong interaction among chitosan, PVA, and zeolite. Weight loss test results indicated that the composite was stable in acidic and basic media. Congo red was removed through flocculation, and the removal rate was 94% at an initial concentration of 100mg/L for a dose of 1g/L. The removal rate of methyl orange was controlled by adsorption at an initial concentration of less than 100mg/L. Flocculation occurred at high concentrations. The removal rate was also 94% at an initial concentration of 500mg/L for a dose of 5g/L. The adsorption behavior of the composite for the removal of methyl orange and Cr(VI) was described by using a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption capacity of the composite for Cr(VI) was 450mg/g. Therefore, the synthesized composite exhibited versatility during the removal of dyes and heavy metals.

The purpose of this work is to obtain optimal preparation conditions for activated carbons prepared from rattan sawdust (RSAC) for removal of disperse dye from aqueous solution. The RSAC was prepared by chemical activation with phosphoric acid using response surface methodology (RSM). RSM based on a three-variable central composite design was used to determine the effect of activation temperature (400-600 degrees C), activation time (1-3h) and H(3)PO(4):precursor (wt%) impregnation ratio (3:1-6:1) on C.I. Disperse Orange 30 (DO30) percentage removal and activated carbon yield were investigated. Based on the central composite design, quadratic model was developed to correlate the preparation variables to the two responses. The most influential factor on each experimental design responses was identified from the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The optimum conditions for preparation of RSAC, which were based on response surface and contour plots, were found as follows: temperature of 470 degrees C, activation time of 2h and 14min and chemical impregnation ratio of 4.45.

In this study two deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were prepared using ethylene glycol (EG) and two different ammonium-based salts. The potential of these DESs as novel agents for CNTs functionalization was examined by performing a comprehensive characterization study to identify the changes developing after the functionalization process. The impact of DESs was obvious by increasing the surface area of CNTs to reach 197.8 (m2/g), and by adding new functional groups to CNTs surface without causing any damage to the unique structure of CNTs. Moreover, CNTs functionalized with DESs were applied as new adsorbents for the removal of methyl orange (MO) from water. The adsorption conditions were optimized using RSM-CCD experimental design. The kinetics and the equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using different kinetic and isotherm models. According to the regression results, adsorption kinetics data were well described by pseudo-second order model, whereas adsorption isotherm data were best represented by Langmuir isotherm model. The highest recorded maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) value was found to be 310.2 mg/g.

In this study, chitosan/nano SiO2 (CTS/NS) was chemically modified with bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) cross-linker-assisted hydrothermal process to create an effective adsorbent, CTS-BADGE/NS, for the removal of reactive orange 16 (RO16) dye from aquatic systems. Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the adsorption process by varying the adsorbent dose (0.02-0.1 g/100 mL), pH (4-10), and time (20-360 min). The adsorption isotherm results indicated that the Langmuir model fits the experimental data well, suggesting that the adsorption process involves a monolayer formation of RO16 on the surface of CTS-BADGE/NS. The kinetic modeling of RO16 adsorption by CTS-BADGE/NS demonstrated that the pseudo-first-order model fits the adsorption data. CTS-BADGE/NS achieved an adsorption capacity of 97.8 mg/g for RO16 dye at optimum desirability functions of dosage 0.099 g/100 mL, solution pH of 4.44, and temperature of 25 °C. Overall, the π-π electron donor-acceptor system significantly improved the adsorption performance of the CTS-BADGE/NS. The results of the regeneration investigation demonstrate that the CTS-BADGE/NS exhibits effective adsorption of RO16, even after undergoing five consecutive cycles. The results of this study suggest that the developed CTS-BADGE/NS composite can be a promising adsorbent for water purification applications.

This study aims to develop a highly efficient adsorbent material. CNTs are prepared using a chemical vapor deposition method with acetylene and synthesized mesoporous Ni-MCM41 as the carbon source and catalyst, respectively, and are then functionalized using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) through the co-condensation method and loaded with commercial TiO2. Results of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirm that the synthesized CNTs grown are multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Transmission electron microscopy shows good dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles onto functionalized-CNTs loaded TiO2, with the diameter of a hair-like structure measuring between 3 and 8 nm. The functionalized-CNTs loaded TiO2 are tested as an adsorbent for removal of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous solution, and results show that 94% of MO is removed after 10 min of reaction, and 100% after 30 min. The adsorption kinetic model of functionalized-CNTs loaded TiO2 follows a pseudo-second order with a maximum adsorption capacity of 42.85 mg/g. This study shows that functionalized-CNTs loaded TiO2 has considerable potential as an adsorbent material due to the short adsorption time required to achieve equilibrium.

Chemical toxins and organic contaminants such as hydrocarbons and dyes are major global
contaminants with countless tones of those chemicals are created yearly with a significant
amount release to the environment. In this work we screen the ability of a molybdenum-reducing
bacterium isolated from contaminated soil to decolorize various azo and triphenyl methane dyes
independent of molybdenum reduction. Biochemical analysis resulted in a tentative identification
of the bacterium as Enterobacter sp. strain Zeid-6. The bacterium was able to decolorize the azo
dye Orange G. The bacterium reduces molybdate to Mo-blue optimally at pH between 5.5 and
8.0 and temperatures of between 30 and 37 oC. Other requirements include a phosphate
concentration of 5 mM and a molybdate concentration of 20 mM. The absorption spectrum of the
Mo-blue produced was similar to previous Mo-reducing bacterium, and closely resembles a
reduced phosphomolybdate. Molybdenum reduction was inhibited by copper, lead, mercury and
silver which showed 36.8, 16.9, 64.9 and 67.6% inhibition to Mo-reducing activity of
Enterobacter sp. strain Zeid-6, respectively. The resultant molybdenum blue spectrum closely
resembles the spectrum of molybdenum blue from the phosphate determination method. The
ability of this bacterium to detoxify molybdenum and decolorize azo dye makes this bacterium
    an important tool for bioremediation.
