    In this study, a simple, selective and sensitive method, for spectrophotometric determination of As(III) with gallocyanine as the sensitive reagent was developed. The wavelength of an analytical measurement, for the determination of As (III), using gallocyanine was at 630 nm with an optimum response at pH 2. The RSD for the reproducibility of 100 ppm As (III) was 2.3%. The LOD was 0.04 ppm with linear dynamic range in As(III) concentration of 0.2 - 1.5 ppm. The developed method has been validated against Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The interference study of several metal ions was carried out and it revealed that that Mn (II) ion was interfered the most.

    The concentrations of cadmium, copper, zinc and lead, in the total soft tissues of green-lipped mussel Perna viridis of a wide range of sizes (2-11 cm), were determined from a population at Pasir Panjang. The metal contents (μg per individual) and concentrations (μg per g) of cadmium, lead, copper and zinc were studied in P. viridis to find the relationships with body sizes. Smaller and younger mussels showed higher concentrations (μg per g) of Cd, Pb and Zn than the larger and older ones. The results of the present study showed that the plotting of the metal content, against dry body flesh weight on a double logarithmic basis, gave good positive straight lines; this observation is in agreement with Boyden’s formula (1977). This indicated that P. viridis showed a different physiological strategy for each metal being studied, which is related to age.

    Since the establishment of implant in dentistry, the use of removable partial denture in replacing missing teeth apparently becomes less popular. The situation is made worse by the renowned limitations of removable partial denture. One of the obvious limitations of removable partial denture, especially in replacing missing anterior teeth is the unsightly view of metal used for retentive clasp. This case report describes the use of spring loaded plunger attachments as an alternative way to achieve retention and at the same time improving the aesthetic of the prosthesis.

    The grounding system of a lightning protection scheme is designed basically to avoid arcing and
    dangerous step potentials. The grounding impedance of the system varies depending on soil structure and frequency. This paper describes the effect of harmonic impedance (also called frequency dependence of soil) on potential distribution under lightning strike to a metal tower with single grounding path, for different soil types. The results show that the peak value of ground potential rise (GPR) and step voltage (SP) may reach extremely hazardous values even at distances in the order of 90 m from the tower footing, especially when soil resistivity is high. Hence, we emphasise that, in contrast to power grounding, when designing of grounding systems that are meant to handle transient or high frequency currents as well, the frequency dependent soil parameters should be considered to avoid hazardous situations, especially at locations with a high probability of lightning strikes such as metal towers.

    This clinical audit is aimed to provide an insight into the performance of dental technicians in rendering
    fixed prosthodontics services at Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. A retrospective audit was
    carried out between 1st of November 2014 and 31st January 2015 using data derived from records and
    monthly returns of the technicians, which are kept at the ceramic laboratory. Retrospective data on
    cases of diagnostic wax-ups, full metal crowns, metal ceramic crowns, all ceramic crowns and bridges
    that were sent to ceramic laboratory for fabrication from 1st of September 2013 to 31st of August 2014
    was systematically extracted from the record and tabulated categorically in SPSS version 22.0. The
    turnaround time in workings day for diagnostic wax-ups and the prostheses was calculated by deducting
    exit date from entry date. Subsequently, the turnaround time and the complexity of cases were categorized
    accordingly. The association of turnaround time and the complexity of the cases was analysed using
    Fisher Exact test with p value < 0.05. Within this time frame, a total of 102 cases of diagnostic waxups,
    36 cases of crown and 18 cases of bridges were fabricated. 57.8% of diagnostic wax-ups were
    completed within 3 days. 100% of 1 unit crown were completed within 7 days and 94.4% of bridges were
    completed within 14 days. There was a significant association of turnaround time and the complexity of
    the cases for diagnostic wax-ups and crowns with p value

    According to annual reports from the Social Security Organization (SOCSO), between years 2009 and 2011,
    metal industry has the highest reported number of accidents compared to the other manufacturing industry in small
    and medium enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the actual causes of problems that
    lead to the accidents involving metal industries within SMEs. In this study, a checklist through site visits was used to
    collect the data. The overall results revealed that the main causes of accidents are; organization failure, human factor,
    machine failure and surrounding environments.

    Mild steel is the most common metal used in industry. However, mild steel easily corrodes when exposed to environment. One way to protect mild steel from corrodes is by coating it with more noble metal like copper and its alloys. In this study, copper and Cu-Ni alloys were successfully coated on the mild steel substrate by electrodeposition technique using alkaline citrate solutions containing Cu and Ni ions precursors. The reaction and mechanisms of the electrodeposition of copper and Cu-Ni alloys on the mild steel substrate were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry methods. Surface morphology of the coatings was examined by FESEM. The elemental compositions of the coatings were confirmed by EDAX analysis. The molar ratios of Cu-Ni solutions have affected the formation of the coatings. Corrosion study shows that copper coated mild steel can improve the corrosion resistance of the mild steel in 0.5 M NaCl. Cu-Ni coating prepared from Cu60-Ni40 showed the highest corrosion resistance. The order of the corrosion resistance of the samples in 0.5 M NaCl at 25 oC is Cu60-Ni40> Cu75- Ni25> Cu90-Ni10> Cu100> mild steel.

    The most sensitive part of a metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structure to ionizing radiation is the
    oxide insulating layer. When ionizing radiation passes through the oxide, the energy deposited creates
    electron/hole pairs. Oxide trapped charge causes a negative shift in capacitance-voltage (C-V)
    characteristics. These changes are the results of, firstly, incre using trapped positive charge in the
    oxide, which causes a parallel shift of the curve to more negative voltages, and secondly, increasing
    interface trap density, which causes the curve to stretch-out.

    Resin-bonded fibre-reinforced composite bridges provide many advantages over the conventional
    bridges or implant treatment in the management of a traumatically or congenitally missing anterior tooth.
    Furthermore, there is an increasing demand towards providing a metal free resin-bonded bridges over the alloybased
    restorations in order to meet the aesthetic needs especially in the anterior region. Advances in the
    adhesive technology and tooth colored materials offer improved bonding system and better aesthetic outcome.
    Nevertheless, careful selection of cases to receive this type of approach is also one of the key factor to ensure
    the clinical survival of fibre-reinforced composite bridges. This report aims to present the use of fibre-reinforced
    composite to construct indirect cantilever fibre-reinforced composite bridges as part of minimum intervention
    dentistry.

    Supercapacitors, based on fast ion transportation, are among the most promising energy storage solutions that can deliver fast charging-discharging within seconds and exhibit excellent cycling stability. The development of a good electrode material is one of the key factors in enhancing supercapacitor performance. Graphene (G), an allotrope of carbon that consists of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, elicits research attention among scientists in the field of energy storage due to its remarkable properties, such as outstanding electrical conductivity, good chemical stability, and excellent mechanical behavior. Furthermore, numerous studies focus on 2D materials that are analogous to graphene as electrode supercapacitors, including transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Recently, scientists and researchers are exploring TMDs because of the distinct features that make 2D TMDs highly attractive for capacitive energy storage. This study provides an overview of the structure, properties, synthesis methods, and electrochemical performance of G/TMD supercapacitors. Furthermore, the combination of G and TMDs to develop a hybrid structure may increase their energy density by introducing an asymmetric supercapacitor system. We will also discuss the future prospect of this system in the energy field.

    Heavy metals pollution has become a great threat to the world. Since instrumental methods are
    expensive and need skilled technician, a simple and fast method is needed to determine the
    presence of heavy metals in the environment. In this work, a preliminary study was carried out
    on the applicability of various local plants as a source of protease for the future development of
    the inhibitive enzyme assay for heavy-metals. The crude proteases preparation was assayed using
    casein as a substrate in conjunction with the Coomassie dye-binding assay. The crude protease
    from the kesinai plant was found to be the most potent plant protease. The crude enzyme
    exhibited broad temperature and pH ranges for activity and will be developed in the future as a
    potential inhibitive assay for heavy metals.

    Objective: This study aimed to compare the difference in marginal dye penetration between everStick, Parapost XP, Parapost fiber white and control groups under gradual loading.

    Materials and Methods: Sixty-eight human maxillary permanent incisors were divided into four groups. Each specimen was endodontically treated with step-back technique and prepared for each post system according to experimental groups, subsequently cemented in the canal. Composite resin cores were built and laboratory fabricated metal crowns were cemented. All specimens except those in the control group were subjected to thermal cycling. All groups were subjected to gradual loading from 0N-50N for 100 cycles. Specimens were sectioned transversely and the depths of dye penetration along the post were measured. Data were entered in SPSS ver. 22 and analyzed using two-way ANOVA test.

    Results: There was no significant difference in marginal dye penetration between each group (p-value>0.05). However, there was a significant difference in percentage of marginal dye penetration between all groups (p-value<0.05); post-hoc comparison showed significant difference between Fiber White and Control groups (p-value=0.009).

    Conclusion: All the groups showed dye penetration but the percentage was significant only between Parapost Fiber White and the control groups.

    Centella asiatica is widely used as a medicinal plant in Malaysia and other parts of the world. In the present study, the growth and uptake of heavy metal by C. asiatica were determined based on the plant exposure to different treatment of metal-contaminated soils under laboratory conditions. Heavy metals uptake in different parts of the plants namely roots, stems and leaves were determined. In general, it was found that the metal uptake capacity followed the order: roots > stems > leaves. Since a close positive relationship was established between the concentrations of metal accumulated in different parts of the plant and the metal levels in the most contaminated soil, C. asiatica has the potential of being used as a biomonitoring plant for heavy metal pollution in the polluted soils.

    The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of exposure of heavy metals such as Ni, Fe and Mn on the growth of the cyanobacteria Anabaena flos-aquae, which can be found in fresh water environment. Results of the experiments showed that exposure of A. flos-aquae to Ni caused the most toxic effect as compared to exposure with Fe and Mn. The 96 hr LC50 value for Ni exposure was 0.321 mg/mL (approximately 30% inhibition), whereas Mn was the second most toxic metal followed by Fe with the 96 hr LC50 values of 0.684 mg/mL and 3.020 mg/mL respectively. This study demonstrated that even though Fe and Mn are essential micronutrients for A. flos-aquae, both show toxic effects at high concentrations. The difference in the toxicity value between Fe and Mn for A. flos-aquae is five times and this indicates that Mn was five times more toxic to A. flos-aquae than Fe suggesting that the Cyanobacteria is more tolerant to Fe when compared with Mn.

    Vermicomposting using Lumbricus rubellus was conducted in two different durations, 10 and 30 weeks in the same plots. Three different of treatments combination were prepared with eight replicates for each treatment namely cow dung : kitchen waste in 30:70 ratio (T1), cow dung : coffee grounds in 30:70 ratio (T2), and cow dung : kitchen waste : coffee grounds in 30:35:35 ratio (T3). Macronutrients elements in the vermicompost from each treatment were measured in the tenth and thirtieth week. Comparatively longer duration of vermicomposting by using Lumbricus rubellus enhanced the quality of vermicompost by the increase of the macronutrient elements while reducing the heavy metal concentration and C/N ratio.

    An ethanolic solution of caffeine was added to an aqueous solution of metal salts and followed by adding ethanolic solution of adenine and an aqueous solution of potassium thiocyanate to give complexes with general formula [M(CA)2(Ad)X2] where CA is caffeine, Ad is adenine, X is thiocyanate ion and M is Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II). The resulting products were characterized using UV-visible and infrared spectroscopies. Elemental analyses were performed using C, H, N analysis and atomic absorption techniques. The magnetic susceptibility and the conductivity were also measured. The results suggested that the complexes have octahedral geometry.

    The main objective of the present study was to provide a comprehensive LCI of medium scale composting of food waste
    and yard waste at institutional level, based on substance flow analysis (SFA). A secondary objective was to present the
    composition and assess the quality of the final compost product from composting of typical Asian organic waste (food
    waste and yard waste). The experiments were designed to represent a batch situation in an institutional medium size
    composting scenario with input material of food waste mixed with grass clippings and dried leaves. Two composting
    runs were carried out with the intention to showcase the heterogeneity of organic waste and study the effect of windrow
    size on the performance of the process. The input and output material were sampled and characterized in order to
    quantify the substance balance of the process. SFA was performed by means of the mass balance model STAN 2.5 to
    compute unknown parameters (gaseous emissions). SFAs have been performed for C, N, K, P, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb. The
    composting windrows were fed with 212.4 and 393 kg, respectively. VS content reduction is greater in composting pile
    with larger size (Run 2). The loss of C during composting was recorded in the range of 0.146-0.166 kg/kg ww. The C
    losses via leachate were insignificant (0.02% of the total input C). The total N loss during the process was 0.005-0.012
    kg/kg ww. The leachate generation was measured as 0.012-0.013 kg/kg ww. The flows of selected heavy metals were
    assessed. Heavy metals were of minor significance due to low concentrations in the inputs (food waste and yard waste).
    Heavy metals were found to be released to the atmosphere. However, majority of heavy metals remain in the finished
    compost. The C/N reduction during the process was in the range of 10-23%. In general, the compost composition was
    considered to be within the ranges previously reported in literature and thus ready for application in gardening. The LCI
    presented in the present study can be used as a starting point for making environmental assessments of medium-scale
    co-composting of food waste and yard waste in tropical environment. No major environmental problems were identified
    from the process, except for the emissions of GHGs.

    The periostracum is the outermost layer overlying the inner prismatic and nacreous layers of the shells of bivalves. In the present study, the distributions of Cd and Pb in the soft tissues (ST) and periostracum of the green-lipped mussel Perna viridis sampled from 15 sampling sites in the coastal waters of Peninsular Malaysia were determined. The concentrations of Cd (0.21-10.87 mg/g dry weight) and Pb (1.16-40.20 mg/g dry weight) in the periostracum were generally higher than those in the ST (Cd: 0.10-5.55 mg/g dry weight; Pb: 2.53-18.62 mg/g dry weight). Based on correlation analysis from nine geographical populations, the higher correlation coefficients (R values) between the periostracum-geochemical fractions of the sediments than between the ST-geochemical fractions of the sediments indicated that the periostracum could be a potential biomonitoring material for Pb. Hence, the present results supported the use of the periostracum of P. viridis as a potential biomonitoring material for Pb but not for Cd. However, more studies are warranted to verify its usefulness for the biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution in tropical coastal waters.

    This study was carried out at an ultrabasic area, Selaru (S1 & S2) dan Felda Rokan Barat (S3), Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan. Eighteen samples of plant and their substrates were collected from study area. The purpose of this study was to determine heavy metal such as Ni, Cr, Mn, Co, Fe and Zn contents in soils and different parts of the plant, such as leaf, stem, root and fruit. Biologal Absorption Coefficient (BAC) of the plant was obtained by calculation. Heavy metals content in the plant were extracted by digestion method whereas in soil the heavy metals were extracted by sequential extraction. Heavy metals content in soil and plant extract was determined using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. It was found that heavy metal concentrations in soil substrate for mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia) were high for Fe followed by Cr, Ni, Mn, Zn and Co with average concentration of 1208.5, 583.4, 352.4, 352.4, 70.7 and 53.6 mg.kg-1, respectively. Available Mn and Zn concentrations were higher than the other heavy metals in term of percentage. Fe and Mn were dominant in all parts of plants however in terms of BAC average, Co showed the highest enrichment value in all parts of the plants.
