Ultrafiltration has been proven to be very effective in the treatment of oil-in-water emulsions, since no chemical additives are required. However, ultrafiltration has its limitations, the main limits are concentration polarization resulting to permeate flux decline with time. Adsorption, accumulation of oil and particles on the membrane surface which causes fouling of the membrane. Studies have shown that the ultrasonic is effective in cleaning of fouled membrane and enhancing membrane filtration performance. But the effectiveness also, depends on the selection of appropriate membrane material, membrane geometry, ultrasonic module design, operational and processing condition. In this study, a hollow and flat-sheet polyurethane (PU) membranes synthesized with different additives and solvent were used and their performance evaluated with oil-in-water emulsion. The steady-state permeate flux and the rejection of oil in percentage (%) at two different modes were determined. A dry/wet spinning technique was used to fabricate the flat-sheet and hollow fibre membrane (HFMs) using Polyethersulfone (PES) polymer base, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) additive and N, N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAc) solvent. Ultrasonic assisted cross-flow ultrafiltration module was built to avoid loss of ultrasonic to the surrounding. The polyurethane (PU) was synthesized by polymerization and sulphonation to have an anionic group (-OH; -COOH; and -SO3H) on the membrane surface. Changes in morphological properties of the membrane had a significant effect on the permeate flow rate and oil removal. Generation of cavitation and Brownian motion by the ultrasonic were the dominant mechanisms responsible for ultrafiltration by cracking the cake layers and reducing concentration polarization at the membrane surface. The percentage of oil after ultrafiltration process with ultrasonic is about 90% compared to 49% without ultrasonic. Ultrasonic is effective in enhancing the membrane permeate flux and controlling membrane fouling.
Designers of energy systems often face challenges in balancing the trade-off between cost and reliability. In literature, several papers have presented mathematical models for optimizing the reliability and cost of energy systems. However, the previous models only addressed reliability implicitly, i.e., based on availability and maintenance planning. Others focused on allocation of reliability based on individual equipment requirements via non-linear models that require high computational effort. This work proposes a novel mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model that combines the use of both input-output (I-O) modelling and linearized parallel system reliability expressions. The proposed MILP model can optimize the design and reliability of energy systems based on equipment function and operating capacity. The model allocates equipment with sufficient reliability to meet system functional requirements and determines the required capacity. A simple pedagogical example is presented in this work to illustrate the features of proposed MILP model. The MILP model is then applied to a polygeneration case study consisting of two scenarios. In the first scenario, the polygeneration system was optimized based on specified reliability requirements. The technologies chosen for Scenario 1 were the CHP module, reverse osmosis unit and vapour compression chiller. The total annualized cost (TAC) for Scenario 1 was 53.3 US$ million/year. In the second scenario, the minimum reliability level for heat production was increased. The corresponding results indicated that an additional auxiliary boiler must be operated to meet the new requirements. The resulting TAC for the Scenario 2 was 5.3% higher than in the first scenario.
An increase of nucleate pool boiling with the use of different fluid properties has received much attention. In particular, the presence of nanostructures in fluids to enhance boiling was given special consideration. This study compares the effects of graphene nanoplatelet (GNP), functionalized GNP with polyethylene glycol (PEG), and multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) nanofluids on the pool boiling heat transfer coefficient and the critical heat flux (CHF). Our findings showed that at the same concentration, CHF for functionalized GNP with PEG (GNP-PEG)/deionized water (DW) nanofluids was higher in comparison with GNP- and CNT-based nanofluids. The CHF of the GNP/DW nanofluids was also higher than that of CNT/DW nanofluids. The CHF of GNP-PEG was 72% greater than that of DW at the concentration of 0.1 wt %. There is good agreement between measured critical heat fluxes and the Kandlikar correlation. In addition, the current results proved that the GNP-PEG/DW nanofluids are highly stable over 3 months at a concentration of 0.1 wt %.
Rapid development in hilly areas in Malaysia has become a trend that put a stress to the sloping area. It reduces the factor of safety by reducing the resistant force and therefore leads to slope failure. Vegetation plays a big role in reinforcement functions via anchoring the soils and forms a binding network within the soil layer that tied the soil masses together. In this research, three plant species namely Acacia mangium, Dillenia suffruticosa and Leucaena leucocephala were assessed in term of their soil-root shear strength properties. Our results showed that Acacia mangium had the highest shear strength values, 30.4 kPa and 50.2 kPa at loads 13.3 kPa and 24.3 kPa, respectively. Leucaena leucocephala showed the highest in cohesion factor, which was almost double the value in those of Dillenia suffruticosa and Acacia mangium. The root profile analysis indicated Dillenia suffruticosa exhibited the highest values in both root length density and root volume, whilst Leucaena leucocephala had the highest average of root diameter.
The presence of pores plays an important role for many membrane processes especially in ultrafiltration and microfiltration. Epoxidised natural rubber (ENR)/polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes filled with two types of silica fillers were prepared via simultaneous solvent exchange and evaporation of solvent technique. Two types of silica, i.e. microsilica (microcrystalline
silica powder) and nanosilica (generated from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)) were used. The chemical composition, morphology and mechanical stability of the membranes were studied. Both types of silica showed good interaction with the membrane matrix. The formation of pores depended on the size of silica particles added. Microsilica produced large pores while insitu generated nanosilica produced nanosized pores. The mechanical properties of membrane improved with the addition
of silica. The tensile strength increased from 10.6 MPa to 17.8 MPa and 14.5 MPa for nanosilica and microsilica filled membrane while the tensile modulus increased from 1.6 MPa to 3.8 MPa and 3.4 MPa, respectively. Thus, both types of silica acted as a filler as well as pore forming agent for the ENR/PVC membrane.
The aim of the study was to develop response surface methodology (RSM) models for polymer loading, density, dimensional stability, strength and stiffness of compressed wood of sesenduk (Endospermum diadenum) treated with phenol formaldehyde (PF). Central composite design (CCD) using RSM with three processing parameters was studied in their specific ranges: PF concentration (PC) from 24-40%, pre-curing time (PCT), 3-9 h and compression ratio (CR), 70-90%. The experimental design was analysed and interpreted using the Design Expert Software (Stat Ease version 8) and the responses of 3d plots were built using the same software. Quadratic models in terms of PC, PCT and CR were developed for polymer loading, density, reduction in water absorption and modulus of rupture in static bending. Multiple linear equations were developed for anti-swelling efficiency and modulus of elasticity. The experimental values were in good agreement with predicted ones and the models were highly significant with correlation coefficients between 0.626 and 0.926. PC and CR had significant effects on the responses. The range of PCT used did not significantly affect the responses. It was also found that the improvement of properties ranged from moderately to highly correlated with the polymer loading in the compreg wood.
The Malacca Straits is located between Peninsula Malaysia and Sumatra Island. This investigation used equation of motion (Navier-Stokes equation) with the following driving forces: tides, wind of National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) for year of 2007, salinity and temperature. The equation of motion was solved by means of Hamburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSOM). The results for both southwest and northeast monsoon were explained and discussed. The simulation results both for February and August 2007 were relatively similar. Current surface simulation in the Malacca Straits agrees well with the current pattern of previous works. The magnitude of current was between 10-70 cm/s to the northwest. While at the layer 30-50 m in the Malacca Straits, the currents have the magnitude of 10-30 cm/s towards northwest. For the bottom current, the current speed was 0-20 cm/s towards northwest. For the surface and 30-50 m layer, generally the current magnitudes were greater in February compared to those in August. While for the bottom layer, the current magnitudes between February and August were relatively the same.
Previous works have shown that wearable antennas can operate ideally in free space; however, degradation in performance, specifically in terms of frequency shifts and efficiency was observed when an antenna structure was in close proximity to the human body. These issues have been highlighted many times yet, systematic and numerical analysis on how the dielectric characteristics may affect the technical behavior of the antenna has not been discussed in detail. In this paper, a wearable antenna, developed from a new electro-textile material has been designed, and the step-by-step manufacturing process is presented. Through analysis of the frequency detuning effect, the on-body behavior of the antenna is evaluated by focusing on quantifying the changes of its input impedance and near-field distribution caused by the presence of lossy dielectric material. When the antenna is attached to the top of the body fat phantom, there is an increase of 17% in impedance, followed by 19% for the muscle phantom and 20% for the blood phantom. These phenomena correlate with the electric field intensities (V/m) observed closely at the antenna through various layers of mediums (z-axis) and along antenna edges (y-axis), which have shown significant increments of 29.7% in fat, 35.3% in muscle and 36.1% in blood as compared to free space. This scenario has consequently shown that a significant amount of energy is absorbed in the phantoms instead of radiated to the air which has caused a substantial drop in efficiency and gain. Performance verification is also demonstrated by using a fabricated human muscle phantom, with a dielectric constant of 48, loss tangent of 0.29 and conductivity of 1.22 S/m.
The purpose of this study was to synthesize high-quality recycled α-Fe2O3 to improve its complex permittivity properties by reducing the particles to nanosize through high energy ball milling. Complex permittivity and permeability characterizations of the particles were performed using open-ended coaxial and rectangular waveguide techniques and a vector network analyzer. The attenuation characteristics of the particles were analyzed with finite element method (FEM) simulations of the transmission coefficients and electric field distributions using microstrip model geometry. All measurements and simulations were conducted in the 8-12 GHz range. The average nanoparticle sizes obtained after 8, 10 and 12 h of milling were 21.5, 18, and 16.2 nm, respectively, from an initial particle size of 1.73 µm. The real and imaginary parts of permittivity increased with reduced particle size and reached maximum values of 12.111 and 0.467 at 8 GHz, from initial values of 7.617 and 0.175, respectively, when the particle sizes were reduced from 1.73 µm to 16.2 nm. Complex permeability increased with reduced particle size while the enhanced absorption properties exhibited by the nanoparticles in the simulations confirmed their ability to attenuate microwaves in the X-band frequency range.
The effect of adding aluminum hydroxide (ATH) in the palm-based polyurethane hybrid composite was studied. The compression stress and modulus, thermal conductivity and acoustic property were determined. The hybrid composite was prepared by adding 10 wt% of oil palm empty fruit bunch fibre (EFB) followed by ATH at varying amount of 2, 4 and 6 wt% of the overall mass of the resin. The compression stress and modulus gave the highest values of 575 kPa and 2301 kPa, respectively at 2 wt% ATH. At 4 wt% ATH, the compression stress and modulus decreased to 431 kPa and 1659 kPa, respectively and further decreased at 6 wt% ATH to 339 kPa and 1468 kPa respectively. The k-value increased with the increment of the ATH loading exhibited a poor thermal conductivity. Sound absorption analysis indicated that the absorption coefficient was higher at higher frequency (4000 Hz) for all samples with PU-EFB/ATH with 4% ATH showed the highest absorption coefficient.
This paper presents the application of TOPMODEL in the Pinang catchment of Malaysia for stream flow simulation. An attempt has been made to use remote-sensing data (ASTER DEM of 30 m resolution) as a primary input for TOPMODEL in order to simulate the stream flow pattern of this tropical catchment. A calibration period was executed based on 2007-2008 hydro-meteorological dataset which gave a satisfactory Nash-Sutcliffe model (NS) model efficiency of 0.749 and a relative volume error (RVE) of -19.2. The recession curve parameter (m) and soil transmissivity at saturation zone (To), were established as the most sensitive parameters through a sensitivity analysis processes. Hydro-meteorological datasets for the period between 2009 and 2010 were used to validate the model which resulted in satisfactory efficiencies of 0.774 (NS) and -19.84 (RVE), respectively. This study demonstrated the ability ASTER DEM acquired from remote sensing to generate the required TOPMODEL parameters for stream flow simulation which gives insights into better management of available water resources.

The fluid viscosity and thermal conductivity are assumed to vary as a linear function of temperature. A nonlinear coupled governing system is computed. Numerical results were presented for the velocity, pressure gradient, temperature and streamlines. Heat transfer rate at the wall is computed and analyzed. Graphs reflecting the contributions of embedded parameters were discussed.
Annealing temperature plays an important role in the formation of an Au-Ga eutectic alloy. The effects of the annealing temperature on gold nanoparticles colloid and substrate surface were studied using AFM, FE-SEM and TEM. At 600oC, the layer of gold colloids particle formed an island in the state of molten eutectic alloy and absorbed evaporated metalorganics to formed nanowire (NW) underneath the alloy. Pit formed on the substrate surface due to the chemical reactions during the annealing process have an impact on the direction of growth of the NW. Without annealing, the NW formed vertically on the GaAs (100) surface. The growth direction depends on the original nucleation facets and surface energy when annealed. When annealed, the wire base is large and curved due to the migration of Ga atoms on the substrate surface towards the tip of the wire and the line tension between the substrate surface and gold particle.
This study investigates the southwest monsoon circulation and temperature along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia by using the Regional Ocean Modeling System at 9 km resolution. The simulated circulation shows strong northward flowing western boundary currents along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia with maximum speed of approximately of 0.6-0.7 ms-1. The western boundary current, that extends to a depth of about 35 m, continues flowing northward up to approximately 7oN where it changes direction eastward. The circulation along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia is also characterized by two anti-cyclonic eddies. Furthermore, an elongated of cooler sea surface temperature that stretches along the coast was also simulated. The existence of this cool SST pattern is associated with coastal upwelling process due to localized lifting of isotherms near the coast as a response to the southerly-southwesterly wind stress along the coast during the southwest monsoon.
Polylactic acid (PLA)/Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR-50) blends were prepared by melt extrusion followed by injection
molding to fabricate the test samples. The effect of ENR-50 loadings on the morphological, mechanical, chemical
resistance and water absorption properties of the blends were studied using standard methods. The toughness of the
blend improved with ENR loading up to 20 wt. % but flexural and tensile strength decreased. The balanced mechanical
properties were obtained at 20 wt. % ENR-50 loading. SEM showed good distribution and increased ENR particle size
as ENR content increased from 10 to 30 wt. %. The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) showed a steady drop in
crystallization temperature (Tc
) as ENR content increases while the glass transition temperature (Tg
) remained unchanged.
Water absorption was observed to increase with ENR loadings. Increase in ENR content was also observed to reduce the
chemical resistance of the blends.

Transforming CO2 into fuels by utilizing sunlight is promising to synchronously overcome global warming and energy-supply issues. It is crucial to design efficient photocatalysts with intriguing features such as robust light-harvesting ability, strong redox potential, high charge-separation, and excellent durability. Hitherto, a single-component photocatalyst is incapable to simultaneously meet all these criteria. Inspired by natural photosynthesis, constructing artificial Z-scheme photocatalysts provides a facile way to conquer these bottlenecks. In this review, we firstly introduce the fundamentals of photocatalytic CO2 reduction and Z-scheme systems. Thereafter we discuss state-of-the-art Z-scheme photocatalytic CO2 reduction, whereby special attention is placed on the predominant factors that affect photoactivity. Additionally, further modifications that are important for efficient photocatalysis are reviewed.
In order to develop a product sustainably, multiple analyses, including comprehensive environmental assessment, are required. Solar-assisted production of walnut husk methanolic extract (WHME) as a natural antioxidant for biodiesel was scrutinized by using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. More specifically, the environmental sustainability of WHME antioxidant was evaluated and compared to that of propyl gallate (PG), the most widely used synthetic biodiesel antioxidant, under two scenarios. Additionally, supplementary files including the inventory data consisting of raw data as well as elementary flows, mid-point, and end-point categories are presented. The analysis of scenarios revealed that the use of the natural antioxidant and the avoidance of the chemical antioxidant in biodiesel fuel could be regarded as an eco-friendly approach substantially enhancing the environmental friendliness of biodiesel in particular in terms of human health. Furthermore, given the waste-oriented nature of WHME, the scenario involved its application could serve as a promising strategy to simultaneously valorize the agro-waste and generate a value-added product; a move toward implementing the circular economy approach in the biodiesel industry.
The recycling of millions of tons of glass bottle waste produced each year is far from optimal. In the present work, ground blast furnace slag (GBFS) was substituted in fly ash-based alkali-activated mortars (AAMs) for the purpose of preparing glass bottle waste nano-powder (BGWNP). The AAMs mixed with BGWNP were subsequently subjected to assessment in terms of their energy consumption, economic viability, and mechanical and chemical qualities. Besides affording AAMs better mechanical qualities and making them more durable, waste recycling was also observed to diminish the emissions of carbon dioxide. A more than 6% decrease in carbon dioxide emissions, an over 16% increase in compressive strength, better durability and lower water absorption were demonstrated by AAM consisting of 5% BGWNP as a GBFS substitute. By contrast, lower strength was exhibited by AAM comprising 10% BGWNP. The conclusion reached was that the AAMs produced with BGWNP attenuated the effects of global warming and thus were environmentally advantageous. This could mean that glass waste, inadequate for reuse in glass manufacturing, could be given a second life rather than being disposed of in landfills, which is significant as concrete remains the most commonplace synthetic material throughout the world.
In this work, a chitosan-modified nanofiber membrane was fabricated and used to examine the permeation characteristics of C-phycocyanin (CPC) obtained from Spirulina platensis. The effects of NaCl concentration (0.1-1.0 M), chitosan coupling pH (6-8), chitosan coupling concentration (0.1-3.0%), algal solution pH (6-8), algal mass concentration (0.1-1.0% dw/v), and membrane flux (4.08 × 10-2-2.04 × 10-1 mL/min·cm2) on the penetration performance of the membrane for CPC were investigated. The results show that the order of binding selectivity of the membrane for these proteins is contaminating proteins (TP) > allophycocyanin (APC) > CPC. TP and APC molecules were more easily adsorbed by the chitosan-modified membrane, and the CPC molecules most easily penetrated the membrane without being adsorbed, enhancing CPC purity. The purification factor and total mass flux were 3.3 fold and 66%, respectively, in a single step.
