In Malaysia, it is estimated that almost 80 percent of the world's population today used palm oil in their daily lives. Malaysia is the second country exporting palm oil, about 39 percent of world palm oil output. Besides that, Malaysia also recorded about 44 per cent of world exports, making the palm industry very important for countries other than rubber and cocoa. However, to keep the palm industry running smoothly and constantly, there are many challenges to face. One is to maintain soil fertility because the soil can affect the growth of oil palm trees. With the use of this system, it will show the condition of soil behaviour to the farmer about the treatment given. Arduino board is used in this project which it is programmed to calculate and display the level of soil condition by using temperature sensor and soil moisture sensors as an input. This sensor will detect the level of soil moisture and temperature and it is easier for farmers to monitor the soil conditions. Controlled soil conditions can improve the soil's ability to maintain the fertility of palm trees and help plant growth suit to the weather and local climate.
This study investigates the flexural behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened through the combined externally bonded and near-surface mounted (CEBNSM) technique. The externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) and near-surface mounted (NSM) techniques are popular strengthening solutions, although these methods often demonstrate premature debonding failure. The proposed CEBNSM technique increases the bond area of the concrete⁻carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) interface, which can delay the debonding failure. This technique is appropriate when any structure has a narrow cross-sectional width or is in need of additional flexural capacity that an individual technique or material cannot attain. An experimental test matrix was designed with one control and five strengthened RC beams to verify the performance of the proposed technique. The strengthening materials were CFRP bar as NSM reinforcement combined with CFRP fabric as EBR material. The test variables were the diameter of the NSM bars (8 and 10 mm), the thickness of the CFRP fabrics (one and two layers) and the U-wrap anchorage. The strengthened beams showed enhancement of ultimate load capacity, stiffness, cracking behaviour, and strain compatibility. The ultimate capacity of the CEBNSM-strengthened beams increased from 71% to 105% compared to that of the control beam. A simulation method based on the moment-rotation approach was also presented to predict the behaviour of CEBNSM-strengthened RC beams.
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the usefulness of SPECT-CT in differentiating metastatic and degenerative disease of the spine. Methods: Twenty-eight patients aged 50 years and above diagnosed with various cancers were referred for whole body (WB) planar bone scintigraphy. Those with a maximum three foci of tracer up- take in the spine were selected for the study. SPECT-CT of these areas of uptake was performed and the lesions were classified as degenerative, indeterminate or metastasis. A repeat study (WB planar bone scintigraphy and SPECT-CT) was performed between 3 to 12 months later. These areas of uptake were reassessed and compared with the first WB planar bone scintigraphy and SPECT-CT. The second SPECT-CT was used as the standard for the diagnosis. Results: Thirty-seven lesions in 28 patients were assessed. The sensitivity of the first WB planar bone scintigraphy, second WB planar bone scintigraphy and first SPECT-CT is 75%, 62.5% and 75% respectively. The specificity of the first WB planar bone scintigraphy, second WB planar bone scintigraphy and first SPECT-CT is 86%, 93%, 90% respectively. There was 2.7% of ‘indeterminate lesion’ in the first WB planar bone scintigraphy, 5.4% in the second WB planar bone scintigraphy, and 5.4% in the first SPECT-CT. The indeterminate lesions were resolved in the second SPECT-CT. Conclusion: SPECT- CT is useful in differentiating degenerative disease from metastatic lesions in the spine.
Introduction: Broken glass exhibits unique fracture patterns depend upon the nature of the impact. The fracture patterns provide information like point and angle of impact, direction of force and sequence of firing. Recent studies have shown that the use of shotgun in Malaysia is increasing, yet, the relationship existing among the fracture pattern and the projectile impact factors are not well documented. The objective was to analyse the fracture characteristics on different glass types of variable thickness and distance made by shotgun ammunition. Methods: Soda lime and tempered glass panel with dimension of 12’x 12’ with 3 or 4 mm thickness were shot from various distances of 4, 6 and 8 m from the muzzle end of the shotgun. Samples were analysed under fixed parameters and observations were recorded. Results: It is found that the bullet hole diameter of 4 mm tempered glass were larger compared to 4 mm soda lime glass ranged from 14.33 to 24.17 cm as distance increased. Tempered glass surface also exhibited dicing fragments unlike soda lime glass where only radial fracture patterns are evident. This can be attributed to high inherent strength and ductility that makes the tempered glass remarkably resistant to external force. Conclusion: The findings from this study can lead to distinguish the type of glass through examination of fracture patterns, whether it is soda lime silica or tempered glass. The type of glass and the source of impact can be determined using the fragments, no reconstruction necessary.
A simple and low
cost cloud point extraction (CPE) method was developed for the determination of
tartrazine in food samples by spectrophotometry detection at a wavelength 427.5 nm. The CPE was
performed by utilizing Tween 20 and sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ) as extractant and separation
accelerator, respectively. Fac tors that influenced CPE such as surfactant and salt concentrations, pH
and temperature were optimized in the context of extracting tartrazine from aqueous media. Under an
optimal condition, the proposed CPE was applied for the determination of tartrazine in sweets and
concentrated syrup juice, which represented food samples. A CPE UV Vis method showed linear
calibration within the range of 1 12 mg L 1 of tartrazine with a regression coefficient was 0.9957 . The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantifi cation (LOQ) of the method were 0.88 mg L 1 and 2.96
mg L 1 , respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was found to be < 3.00 %. The amount of tartrazine found in food samples was 1.22 6.12 mg L 1 . The results showed that the proposed CPE
method was applicable for the determination of tartrazine in food samples and the tartrazine content in the food samples was permitted according to the guidelines from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
For centuries, people have been practising phytomedicine in treating ailments or reducing risk of suffering certain diseases. It is considered as a part of an ancient medicine with interest in it becomes rapidly escalating in this modern era. Expansive and prescribed medicine is not the only true path to treat various illnesses. Without disclaiming the modern medicine, herbs can be used as an alternative or a combined therapy with conventional medication. Phytomedicine or ethnomedicine is not a new
field in the world of research. It has been started long ago since the ancient times. As we realized the expensive modern medication is not the only mean to treat illness, interest in the discovery of remedy through natural or conventional products has become more escalating. (Copied from article)
Fracture is common after trauma. Proximal humeral fracture can occur in the elderly after fall and in youngsters after motor vehicle accidents (MVA) and sport injuries. A 37-year-old man was admitted with a fracture of his left proximal humerus following an MVA. He sustained a 3-part fracture and treated surgically using a PHILOS plate. There are few options in managing proximal humerus fracture ranging from conservative to surgical intervention based on its severity. We reminiscent the usage of PHILOS plate as a mode of treatment of such fracture.
Introduction: Eating seafood has become a major health concern for many people due to the present of heavy met- al especially cadmium (Cd). Cd can accumulate in the body and disrupt the normal cellular processes which will eventually lead to organ damage. This study aims to determine the seafood consumption pattern and blood cadmium (BCd) as well as the association between these two variables among respondents living along the coastal area of Melaka. Methods: Pretested questionnaires were used to collect background and food frequency intake from coastal villagers through convenient sampling method. Venous blood samples were analysed by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for BCd determination. Results: A total of 63 respondents who 54% were female with median age of 34 years old provided complete data in this study. The most frequently consumed seafood and its product were shrimp paste (31.5%) followed by mackerel (13.6%), hardtail-scad (6.2%), flatfish (4.5%) and fish ball (4.0). All blood samples showed the present of Cd with median (IQR) = 0.076 (0.1) μg/L and ranged between 0.007 to 1.284 μg/L. The finding showed no association between frequently consumed seafood and low BCd of the respondents. On the other hand, gender was found to be significantly associated with the BCd. Conclusion: Seafood consumption pattern was not significantly associated with BCd which suggests that frequent seafood consumption may not contribute much to BCd level among the respondents as well as it may indicates safe consumption of these seafood available in the study location.
Ordered mesoporous silica with hexagonal structure, MCM-41 was synthesized under basic media using Ludox as the silica source and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as the organic surfactant template. Organic-functionalized MPTS-MCM-41 were prepared by grafting method using 3- mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane. The samples were characterized using FTIR, FESEM and XRD to obtain more detailed structural insights of MCM-41. The synthesized MPTS-MCM-41 were tested for adsorption of Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions in aqueous solution. Adsorption studies were analyzed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The effect of adsorbent dose and contact time on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions from aqueous solution have been investigated. MPTS-MCM-41 was found to be effective adsorbent for metal cation than parent MCM-41 with higher affinity for Pb(II) than Cr(III) from single solution. The highest percentage removal of Pb(II) was achieved at 94.59% using 0.4 g MPTS-MCM-41 at 4 hours contact time whereby the highest percentage removal of Cr(III) ions was achieved at 66.02% using 0.4 g MPTS-MCM-41 at 5 hours contact time
The study on composition, abundance and diversity of larval fish was conducted with the aim to attain information on larval fish breeding ground and made easy for fishery management. Larval fish were collected during September 2015 from mangrove areas of Pekan Pahang, Pendas Johor, Matang Perak and Setiu Terengganu using a bongo net, towed at a depth of about 0.5 m from the surface for 5 min against the tidal flow. A total of 354 larval fish were collected, representing 21 families and 51 species. The top 3 families were Gobiidae (39.26%), Engraulidae (14.97%) and Clupeidae (14.40%), occurred in all sampling areas except in Setiu. The most abundant 11 species formed about 50% of all collected larval fish. Gobiidae spp. were the most abundant, making up 17.8% of the total catch, followed by Clupeidae spp. (12.7%), Engraulidae spp. (8.2%), Ambassis dusumieri (6.5%), Thryssa kammalensis (4.8%), Pseudogobius masago (both 4.8%), Sillaginidae spp. (4.2%), Ambassidae spp. (3.4%), Pseudogobius sp. (3.4%), Blenniidae spp. (2.8%), and Hemigobius hoevenii (2.5%). The highest diversity of larval fish was recorded for Pendas, Johor with Shannon Wiener index Hs = 2.699, and the lowest was Setiu, Terengganu (Hs = 0.832). The highest evenness index of larval fish species was recorded for Pekan, Pahang with Es = 0.815 and the lowest for Setiu Terengganu with Es = 0.465, indicating high single-species dominance. Species overlapping was the highest between Pendas and Setiu at 14.3%, and zero similarity of fish composition was recorded between Matang and Setiu according to Jaccard coefficient. Findings from surveillance of larval fish species provide valuable information for future biodiversity studies and allow better management of biodiversity resources in the mangrove ecosystem of Malaysia.
Introduction: Constipation is affecting a quarter of human population at any one time in all age groups. However, a proper gamma scintigraphic study of whole GI transit is rarely performed in Malaysia due to the lack of suitable radiopharmaceutical. Hence, this study was taken to develop a suitable radiotracer formulation for gamma scintigraphy study of whole gastric-intestinal transit. Methods: The biocompatible polystyrene (PS) incorporated with 152Sm2O3 (5%, w/v) will be used to synthesize the radiotracer. The 152Sm-labelled PS particles was neutron activated to 153Sm in a nuclear reactor for 5 minutes. Characterization of the physicochemical properties, gamma spectrometry and in-vitro radiolabeling studies in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) were carried out to study the properties and stability of the radiotracer before and after neutron activation. Results: Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and particle size analysis showed that size, shape and surface morphology of the particles remained after neutron activation. The synthesized 153Sm-labelled PS radiotracer (100 mg) particles achieved an activity of 3.7 MBq after 46 hrs. As indicated by the gamma spectrometry result, there is no long half-life radioimpuirties present in the samples. The 153Sm-labelled PS particles achieved radiolabeling efficiency of more than 95% in both SGF and SIF over 72 hrs. Conclusions: A 153Sm-labelled radiotracer particles formulation has been successfully developed from biocompatible PS. The proposed formulation has the advantage of cheaper, easier to be produced and reduced radiation exposure to staff. Further studies are required to validate the in-vivo performance of 153Sm-labelled formulation for assessing GI motility and transit in clinical use.
Cancer metastasis is a multistep process, which results in cancer cells disseminating to other organs. The crucial metastasis step involves cancer invasion which occurs via actin-protrusion by invasive malignant cells, termed as invadopodia. In solid tumours, invadopodia formation increases as a result of hypoxia which is found to be resis- tant against chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Phytochemicals have been potentially identified as a prime source of effective conventional drugs for metastasis treatments, which target cancer cell invasion, particularly molecular components of the invadopodia formation. The Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1α (HIF-1α) is an essential target in terms of treatment for hypoxic tumour, as well as helping to identify the mode of action for the drugs, particularly phy- tochemical compounds. The aim of this review is to highlight the current development with regards to the ability of phytochemicals in targeting cancer metastasis, as well as phytochemical compounds which are able to inhibit HIF-1α and invadopodia formation. The use of phytochemicals for targeting hypoxic cancer cells may open new prospects for reducing cancer metastasis.
Introduction: Accumulation of heavy metals through seafood consumption constitutes a significant potential threat to human health. Biomonitoring of whole blood heavy metals level gave an insight into the internal body burden to the exposure of heavy metals. The aims of this study were to assess the blood heavy metals (arsenic and lead) level among the coastal community of Melaka and to determine their association with sociodemographic background and potential sources of heavy metals accumulation. Methods: Respondents were recruited through purposive sampling technique based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The questionnaires were distributed to obtain sociodemograph- ic information, the frequency of seafood intake and smoking habit. Blood samples were obtained on a voluntary basis. A total of 63 respondents completed all the information required. The heavy metals concentration in blood was determined by inductively coupled plasma- mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results: The blood arsenic (BAs) con- centration of respondents was 0.076 (0.059 – 0.107) µg/L and the blood lead (BPb) concentration of respondents was 1.204 (0.670 – 2.094) µg/L respectively. A significant association was observed between seafood-based product frequency intake and BPb concentration (p < 0.05). Other seafood frequency intake and background factors were not significantly associated with the BAs and BPb concentration of respondents. Conclusion: The findings showed that arsenic and lead levels in the blood of respondents along the coastal area of Melaka did not exceed the blood heavy metals reference levels and there was also lack of associations between blood heavy metals concentration and the potential factors of heavy metals accumulation studied.
Introduction: Not only does flood affects the household community, but it also has an impact on business entities, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs) located in flood-prone areas. In order to assist SMEs to prepare for a flood disaster effectively, the set-up of a disaster preparedness plan is essential. The purpose of this study is to devel- op a validated instrument for identifying the different levels of disaster preparedness among SMEs in their readiness to face a flood disaster. Methods: In this preliminary study, 26 items of flood disaster preparedness activities (FDPA) reviewed from works of literature were adopted and adapted to be randomly administered to 30 respondents (SME business owners) located in the Temerloh province, Malaysia, which is identified as a flood-prone area. A Rasch analysis technique was used to identify the psychometric properties of the instrument. Results: Using the Rasch mea- surement analysis technique, the instrument used was able to categorise the SMEs into two level of preparedness: low and moderate. About 25 items were found to possess good psychometric features in determining the flood pre- paredness level of SMEs despite the lack of items on measuring high-level preparedness activities. Conclusion: The results of this preliminary study have served to highlight the strength of the instrument and gaps identified for further improvement in the near future.
As in other parts of the world, the practice of traditional healing has been part of the local healthcare system for most of the indigenous ethnic groups, since time immemorial. Using descriptive research format, this study looked into the practice of a traditional medicine practitioner in one of the villages of Kota Marudu in Sabah, Malaysia. The practitioner comes from the Dusun Tagahas subethnic group which is one of the numerous ethnic groups in Sabah. The large number of ethnic group in Sabah has made the research of ethnomedicine rather challenging. The practitioner acquired knowledge of traditional healing and treatment which is mainly herbal medicines alluded with some spiritual aspects. He used many herbal preparations in various forms and applications. Similar to the other traditional medicine practitioners, his knowledge and skill regarding his practice are impressive but the practitioner is unable to explain on the mechanism of how the therapy works. Generally their philosophy rests on the notion that disease responds to right medicine but not explanation. There is an urgent need to capture all the knowledge and skill possessed by traditional medicine practitioners, who generally belong to an ageing and fading population, especially those live in remote and hard to reach areas. Scientific research should be conducted to help traditional medicine healers and herbalists to understand their practices before they suffer the consequences of inexorable extinction.
Ebola virus (EBOV) is one of the lethal viruses, causing more than 24 epidemic outbreaks to date. Despite having available molecular knowledge of this virus, no definite vaccine or other remedial agents have been developed yet for the management and avoidance of EBOV infections in humans. Disclosing this, the present study described an epitope-based peptide vaccine against EBOV, using a combination of B-cell and T-cell epitope predictions, followed by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation approach. Here, protein sequences of all glycoproteins of EBOV were collected and examined via in silico methods to determine the most immunogenic protein. From the identified antigenic protein, the peptide region ranging from 186 to 220 and the sequence HKEGAFFLY from the positions of 154-162 were considered the most potential B-cell and T-cell epitopes, correspondingly. Moreover, this peptide (HKEGAFFLY) interacted with HLA-A*32:15 with the highest binding energy and stability, and also a good conservancy of 83.85% with maximum population coverage. The results imply that the designed epitopes could manifest vigorous enduring defensive immunity against EBOV.
INTRODUCTION: One of the most important and debilitating complication of diabetes mellitus is foot
problem such as ulcers, infections and amputations. However, these complications are preventable by simple
intervention such as regular foot care practice. This study aims to assess the foot care practice and its
associated factors among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients attending primary health clinics in Kuantan.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at four primary health clinics in
Kuantan involving 450 study participants who were selected by using universal sampling method. Level of
awareness and practice toward diabetic foot care was assessed using validated self-administered
questionnaire. Multiple logistic regressions were performed to identify factors associated with poor foot care
practice among the respondents. RESULTS: About 59.6% of respondents had poor foot care practice and
50.9% had poor awareness level. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified that, increasing age
(OR 0.97, 95% CI: 0.955-0.993) and good awareness towards foot problem (OR 0.43, 95%CI: 0.289-0.643)
were less likely to have poor foot care practice. However, Malay ethnicity (OR 1.81, 95% CI: 1.002-3.271) and
obesity (OR 1.9, 95% CI: 1.225-2.976) were associated with poor foot care practice after controlling other
variables. CONCLUSION: Majority of the respondents had poor foot care practice and poor awareness.
Respondents who are older and have better awareness are less likely to have poor foot care practice.
Diabetic patients who are Malays and/or obese are predicted to have poor diabetic foot practice and hence
must be prioritized for a sustainable patient education and compliance towards foot care practice at primary
care level.
Vermicomposting is a process that involves biological, chemical and physical transformations of solid organic materials such as agricultural residues of plant and animal through the use of microorganisms and earthworms. There are three main classes of earthworms, and only those from one class are usually used for vermicomposting. However, mostly foreign earthworms are used in the setup. Foreign earthworms are more expensive and harder to obtain than local earthworms. This makes the local farmers reluctant to try since they are expensive. The difference in vermicompost using two species of epigeic earthworms, a local earthworm and a foreign earthworm (Eisenia fetida), and normal compost without any earthworms was measured in this study. Both species of earthworms were placed in identical vermibeds consisting of partially composted goat manure and partially composted spent coconut flakes (SCF) with the ratio of 5:1 respectively in terms of weight. The vermibed moisture content was maintained at 60 – 70% throughout the whole process. The end products showed a difference from one another. The E. fetida showed a better result compared to the local earthworms in terms of the nutrient content presence and the adaptability of the earthworms during the whole process. However, the end product from the local earthworms was still better compared to the normal compost without any earthworms.
This study focused on feasibility analysis of hybrid electrification system for an aqua-tourism resort located remotely from the grid connection in Terengganu. There were four standalone systems used in this study: diesel/PV/biomass/battery, diesel/PV/battery, biomass/diesel/battery, and diesel only. The design and analysis of these systems were done using Hybrid Optimization of MultipleEnergy Resources (HOMER) software. The results showed that the diesel/PV/battery system was the optimum solution in terms of net present cost (NPC) and cost of energy (COE). This system comprises 20 % of PV penetration with NPC and COE of USD 57,823 (RM 241, 729.90) and 0.428 USD/kWh (1.79 RM/kWh), respectively. Meanwhile, the diesel/PV/biomass/battery system with NPC of USD 65,388 (RM 273, 355.49) and COE of 0.484 USD/kWh (2.02 RM/kWh) was found to be the best among all systems in terms of greenhouse emissions. This system was able to reduce almost 70 % of carbon dioxide if compared with diesel only system and about 15 % lower than the diesel/PV/battery system with a renewable energy fraction of 44 %.

Di sebalik pembangunan ini, pengguna dibelenggu dengan pelbagai masalah pasaran yang melibatkan produk dan perkhidmatan. Memandangkan golongan muda sering menjadi mangsa dalam pelbagai masalah pasaran, kajian terhadap mahasiswa Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (IPT) di Malaysia amatlah penting agar mereka dapat memahami dan melaksanakan tanggungjawab sebagai pengguna dengan baik melalui amalan kepenggunaan seharian. Tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk menentukan profil mahasiswa IPT berkaitan amalan kepenggunaan agar tanggungjawab mereka sebagai pengguna dapat diperbaiki. Pemboleh ubah yang dikaji adalah faktor demografi iaitu jantina, umur, etnik, tahap pendidikan, bidang pengajian, tempoh menjadi ahli kelab pengguna, dan status keahlian di dalam kelab pengguna serta faktor tingkah laku iaitu amalan kepenggunaan. Kajian ini melibatkan seramai 800 mahasiswa IPT daripada sepuluh buah IPT yang dipilih secara persampelan rawak berperingkat. Penganalisisan data menggunakan analisis Ujian Khi Kuasa Dua dengan menggunakan perisian Statistical Package Social Sciences (SPSS). Hasil pemprofilan mendapati ciri responden yang perlu diberi penekanan dalam pendidikan pengguna ialah mereka daripada etnik Melayu dan Cina, yang masih bujang, dan mempunyai tahap pendidikan diploma dan ijazah sarjana muda tanpa mengira jantina, umur, asal, IPT, semester pengajian, bidang pengajian, dan keahlian dalam kelab pengguna. Kajian ini memberi implikasi kepada Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri, dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna (KPDNHEP), persatuan pengguna, dan pihak institusi dalam meningkatkan program pendidikan pengguna melalui seminar kepenggunaan, penerbitan, edaran bahan berkaitan kepenggunaan, pertandingan serta penyampaian melalui media massa dan media sosial berpandukan ciri-ciri mahasiswa yang perlu diberi penekanan agar tahap amalan kepenggunaan mahasiswa IPT di Malaysia semakin kukuh pada masa akan datang.
