Industrial pollution issue and dark colour of carbon black, clay based non black filler are getting more importance for reinforcing elastomer. EPDM-Kaolin composites with various maleated EPDM concentration have been prepared by mixing on a two roll mill. The rheometry data showed the optimum cure time increases with increasing compatibilizer concentration without decreasing torque value indicating that acidic functional groups comes from compatibilizer could retard cure rate and increase the optimum cure time rather than change in the ultimate cure state. As the filler
concentration increases, the edge to edge and face to edge interaction between filler and EPDM increases and the free volume between EPDM molecules is reduced, the storage modulus increases. Moreover, the dynamic mechanical analysis also showed the increase in glass transition temperature with increase in filler concentration due to the inter-tubular diffusion of EPDM inside the clay. It was also observed that with increasing filler concentration, the resistivity and dielectric strength decreases and moreover with increasing compatibilizer concentration the resistivity decreases due to better dispersion of filler helps to build conduction path. The morphological study also revealed that homogeneity of filler dispersion increases with increase in compatibilizer concentration.

In this paper, fabrication and investigation of organic pressure sensor based on AlICIVT-VO 2(3j7)ICu composite is reported. The active layer of the composite was deposited by drop-casting of the blend CN'T-VO 2 (3fl) on a glass substrate (with prefabricated copper (Cu) electrode). The thin film of the blend consists of carbon nanotube CNT, (2.55 wt. %) and vanadium oxide (VO 2 (3fl)) micropowder, (3 wt. %) in benzol (1 mL). The thickness of the composite was in the range of 20-40 ,um. It was found that the fabricated sensor was sensitive to pressure and showed good repeatability. The decrease in resistance of the sensor was observed by increasing the external uniaxial pressure up to 50 kNm-2 . The experimentally obtained results were compared with the simulated results and showed reasonable agreement with each other.

Structural and luminescence properties of borophosphate glasses with different modifier doped with transition metal ions have been investigated in this study. The glass sample from the series of xPb 30 4:0 .2Sb20 3:0.3B 20 3:(0 .5-x)P 20 5 and ySb 20 3:0 .2Pb 30 4:(0 .5-y)B 20 3:0 .3P 20 5where x 20 mol% and 0 y 0 .1 5mol% , respectively, were doped with 0.01 mol% of Fe 20 3 system have been prepared using the melt-quenching technique. The structural properties of samples had been studied using fourier transform infrared (FT-m) spectroscopy. The FT-IR study showed the network structure of the studied glasses based on the B 20 3-P 20 5host with the 5b203 and Pb203 modifiers. The results of FT-IR showed traces of B03 and B04 with the introduction of 5b203 and Pb203 modifiers. With the increasing content of B203 which replacing content of P205 in the glass network, the intensity of the borate band decreases and shifted to lower frequency. uv-Vis spectroscopy analysed the transition of Fe3+ from ground state to excited state in the ultraviolet spectral region. The photoluminescence of samples were studied using photoluminescence spectroscopy. The result of photoluminescence spectroscopy showed the effect of photoluminescence enhancement by doping Fe3+ as activator.

Introduction: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of thermocycling on the compressive strength of selected luting cements. Material and methods: 5 types of luting cements were tested. A total of thirty cylindrical specimens measuring 6mm in height and 4mm in diameter were prepared for each type of cement which were then divided into two groups ie Group 1: Exposure, and Group 2: Control. Both groups were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours. Group 1 was subjected to 500 cycles in a thermocycling baths of 5ºC and 55ºC with 20 seconds in each bath. Group 2 was not exposed to thermocycling procedure. The compressive strength for each cement type was determined by using a universal testing machine. Results: Resin adhesive cement had the highest compressive strength; followed by conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC) whilst resin modified GIC was the least. Thermocycling had no significant effect on the compressive strength of RelyXTM ARC and Fuji I (p>0.05), but a significant effect on Fuji I CAPSULE, Fuji CEM, Fuji Plus CAPSLUE (p

Polylactic acid (PLA)/Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR-50) blends were prepared by melt extrusion followed by injection
molding to fabricate the test samples. The effect of ENR-50 loadings on the morphological, mechanical, chemical
resistance and water absorption properties of the blends were studied using standard methods. The toughness of the
blend improved with ENR loading up to 20 wt. % but flexural and tensile strength decreased. The balanced mechanical
properties were obtained at 20 wt. % ENR-50 loading. SEM showed good distribution and increased ENR particle size
as ENR content increased from 10 to 30 wt. %. The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) showed a steady drop in
    crystallization temperature (Tc
) as ENR content increases while the glass transition temperature (Tg
    ) remained unchanged.
Water absorption was observed to increase with ENR loadings. Increase in ENR content was also observed to reduce the
    chemical resistance of the blends.

Cupric oxide (CuO) thin films were prepared on a glass and silicon (Si) substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering system. The structural, optical and electrical properties of CuO films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (xRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, ultra-violet visible spectrophotometer, respectively, four point probe techniques and Keithley 4200 semiconductor characterization system. The xRD result showed that single phase CuO thin films with monoclinic structure were obtained. AFM showed well organized nano-pillar morphology with root mean square surface roughness for CuO thin films on glass and Si substrates were 3.64 and 1.91 nm, respectively. Infrared reflectance spectra shown a single reflection peak which is corresponding to CuO optical phonon mode and it confirmed that only existence of CuO composition on both substrates. The optical direct band gap energy of the CuO film grown on glass substrate, which is calculated from the optical transmission measurement was 1.37 eV. Finally, it was found that the deposited CuO films are resistive and the palladium formed ohmic contact for CuO on glass and schottky contact for CuO on Si.

The recycling of millions of tons of glass bottle waste produced each year is far from optimal. In the present work, ground blast furnace slag (GBFS) was substituted in fly ash-based alkali-activated mortars (AAMs) for the purpose of preparing glass bottle waste nano-powder (BGWNP). The AAMs mixed with BGWNP were subsequently subjected to assessment in terms of their energy consumption, economic viability, and mechanical and chemical qualities. Besides affording AAMs better mechanical qualities and making them more durable, waste recycling was also observed to diminish the emissions of carbon dioxide. A more than 6% decrease in carbon dioxide emissions, an over 16% increase in compressive strength, better durability and lower water absorption were demonstrated by AAM consisting of 5% BGWNP as a GBFS substitute. By contrast, lower strength was exhibited by AAM comprising 10% BGWNP. The conclusion reached was that the AAMs produced with BGWNP attenuated the effects of global warming and thus were environmentally advantageous. This could mean that glass waste, inadequate for reuse in glass manufacturing, could be given a second life rather than being disposed of in landfills, which is significant as concrete remains the most commonplace synthetic material throughout the world.

The influence of water-to-cement ratio (w/c) on the compressive strength of cement-biochar-spent resins matrix was
investigated. Spent resins waste from nuclear reactor operation was solidified using cement with w/c ranging from 0.35
to 0.90 by weight. In this study, biochar was used as a cement admixture. Some properties of spent resins and biochar
were determined prior to the formulation study. Compressive strength of harden cement-biochar-spent resins matrix
was determined at 28 days. The compressive strength of cement-biochar-spent resins matrix was found to depend on the
w/c and the amount of spent resins added to the formulation. The immersion test of cement-biochar-spent resins matrix
showed no significant effects of cracking and swelling. The compressive strength of the cement-biochar-spent resins
matrix increased after two weeks in water immersion test.

Technical benefit of incorporation of Palm Oil Clinker (POC) in cement-based applications has been proven in recent
studies. The aim of this work was to assess the heavy metal leaching behavior to ensure environmental safety of using
POC in cement-based applications. The chemical composition, morphology, total organic carbon (TOC) and mineralogy
were determined using XRF, FESEM, TOC analyzers and XRD to select appropriate chemical reagents for complete digestion.
    HNO3
    , HF and HClO4
were used for digestion of POC to measure heavy metal content using ICP-MS. The chemical reagents
    CH3
    COOH, NH2
    OH-HCl, H2
    O2
    +CH3
    COONH4
    and HF+HNO3
+HCl were used for extraction of acid soluble, reducible,
oxidizable and residual fractions of heavy metals in POC, respectively. The leaching toxicity of the POC was investigated
by the USEPA 1311 TCLP method. The result showed the presence of Be, V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Ag, Cd, Ba and Pb with
    levels of 5.13, 11.02, 2.65, 1.93, 45.43, 11.84, 15.07, 0, 0, 81.97 and 1.76 mg/kg, respectively, in POC. The leaching value
    in mg/L of As (4.56), Cu(1.05), Be (0.89), Zn(0.51), Ba(0.26), Ni (0.17), V(0.15), Cr(0.001) and Se (0.001) is found well
below the standard limit of risk. Risk assessment code (RAC) analysis confirms the safe incorporation of POC in cementbased

The main objective of this work was to investigate the influence of waterborne epoxy resin emulsion (WER) on the physical properties of oil well cement slurries. Cement slurries containing 5%, 10% and 15% of WER bwoc were compared with WER-free slurries. The rheological behavior was carried out according to API standard. Uniaxial compressive strength and shear bond strength of cement stone were evaluated at the ages of 24, 48 and 72 h. The experimental results illustrate that the addition of WER does not alter the rheological behavior. The addition of WER has increased the shear bond strength almost 52% at 24 h of aging for 10% WER bwoc when compared with unmodified slurry. The enhancement on shear bond strength was attributed to the mechanical anchoring and resin film forming at the interface

A novel silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs)-based optical sensing probe has been developed for the detection of Japanese Encephalitis virus (JEV). Ag NPs were initially deposited onto amine functionalized glass slides. Subsequently, JEV antibodies were self-assembled onto surfaces of Ag NPs to form optical sensing probes. The detection of JEV antigen was observed via changes in light absorbance by Ag NPs upon occurrence of JEV antigen-antibody bindings. A highly sensitive and rapid optical sensing probe for JEV antigen with a detection limit of 12.8 ng/mL (for S/N ratio = 3) and an analysis assay time of 1 h had been demonstrated.

Diverting waste material from landfill sites has a big implication for the creation of new markets and has environmental benefits through offsetting the need for the extraction of raw materials. Besides, the major attention especially in construction industry is the problem to make natural resources sustainable for three to four decades in future. However, in this study finely glass powder with pozzolanic properties is found to be a partial replacement for cement and can acts as filler in the microstructure of a mortar block. Thus, a study was conducted to see the effects of various proportions of windscreen glass waste powder (WGWP) in determining the degree of water absorption on mortar incorporated with WGWP and to determine the optimum replacement to the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with WGWP. Several compositions of WGWP (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% by cement weight) of mortar cube sample were prepared and cured at 7, 28 and 60 days to undergo a water absorption test. From this research, it shows that the use of WGWP was found to be the best features pozzolanic enough to use as a partial replacement for cement and it can reduced the pores of mortar by blocking the large voids in the hydrated cement paste through pozzolanic reaction. In the term of water absorption, the lowest reading was achieved in 15% and it can be said that 15% replacement is the optimum replacement of OPC.

Indentation size effect (ISE) and R-curve behaviour of Li2O-SiO2 and Li2O-2SiO2 glass ceramics are investigated using micro-indentation and indentation-strength (IS) techniques, respectively. Vickers micro-indentations were applied on both materials at the load of 0.10-19.6 N to determine the load influence on the measured hardness. For the IS-measured fracture toughness, the load ranged from 1.96 to 19.6 N. The hardness decreased with increasing load by 20% and 18% on Li2O-SiO2 and Li2O-2SiO2 glass ceramics, respectively, indicating the ISE behaviour on both materials. The fracture toughness increased with the load by 27% and 59% on Li2O-SiO2 and Li2O-2SiO2 glass ceramics, respectively, signifying the R-curve behaviour. The ISE behaviour of both materials was analysed using the Meyer's, Hays-Kendall (HK), proportional specimen resistance (PSR), Nix-Gao (NG), modified PSR (MPSR) and elastic plastic deformation (EPD) models while the R-curve behaviour was analysed by the fractional power law. The Meyer's index of both materials was less than 2, strongly confirming the ISE existence. The HK, PSR and NG models were only suitable to determine intrinsic Vickers hardness for Li2O-2SiO2 glass ceramic while the MPSR and EPD models were successful for both materials. The fractional power law gave higher R-curve steepness for Li2O-2SiO2 than Li2O-SiO2 glass ceramics. Also, material and brittleness indices predicted, respectively, higher quasi-plasticity and better machinability for Li2O-2SiO2 than Li2O-SiO2 glass ceramics indicating superior performance in the former to the latter. Finally, this study presents a new significant insight into the micro-mechanisms of fracture tolerance behaviour of these glass ceramics which is critical to their functional performance as structural ceramics.

This paper investigates the effect of driving voltage on the attachment force of an electroadhesion actuator, as the existing literature on the saturation of the adhesive force at a higher electric field is incomplete. A new type of electroadhesion actuator using normally available materials, such as aluminum foil, PVC tape and a silicone rubber sheet used for keyboard protection, has been developed with a simple layered structure that is capable of developing adhesive force consistently. The developed actuator is subjected to the experiment for the evaluation of various test surfaces; aluminum, brick, ceramic, concrete and glass. The driving high voltage is varied in steps to determine the characteristics of the output holding force. Results show a quadratic relation between F (adhesion force) and V (driving voltage) within the 2 kV range. After this range, the F-V responses consistently show a saturation trend at high electric fields. Next, the concept of the leakage current that can occur in the dielectric material and the corona discharge through air has been introduced. Results show that the voltage level, which corresponds to the beginning of the supply current, matches well with the beginning of the force saturation. With the confirmation of this hypothesis, a working model for electroadhesion actuation is proposed. Based on the experimental results, it is proposed that such a kind of actuator can be driven within a range of optimum high voltage to remain electrically efficient. This practice is recommended for the future design, development and characterization of electroadhesion actuators for robotic applications.

Chitosan-based hemostats are promising candidates for immediate hemorrhage control. However, they have some disadvantages and require further improvement to achieve the desired hemostatic efficiency. Here, a series of 1% Ga2O3-containing mesoporous bioactive glass-chitosan composite scaffolds (Ga-MBG/CHT) were constructed by the lyophilization process and the effect of various concentrations of Ga-MBG (10, 30, and 50 wt %) on the hemostatic function of the CHT scaffold was assessed as compared to that of Celox Rapid gauze (CXR), a current commercially available chitosan-coated hemostatic gauze. The prepared scaffolds exhibited >79% porosity and showed increased water uptake compared to that in CXR. The results of coagulation studies showed that pure CHT and composite scaffolds exhibited increased hemostatic performance with respect to CXR. Furthermore, the composite scaffold with the highest Ga-MBG content (50 wt %) had increased capability to enhancing thrombus generation, blood clotting, and platelet adhesion and aggregation than that of the scaffold made of pure CHT. The antibacterial efficacy and biocompatibility of the prepared scaffolds were also assessed by a time-killing assay and an Alamar Blue assay, respectively. Our results show that the antibacterial effect of 50% Ga-MBG/CHT was more pronounced than that of CHT and CXR. The cell viability results also demonstrated that Ga-MBG/CHT composite scaffolds had good biocompatibility, which facilitates the spreading and proliferation of human dermal fibroblast cells even with 50 wt % Ga-MBG loading. These results suggest that Ga-MBG/CHT scaffolds could be a promising hemostatic candidate for improving hemostasis in critical situations.

A series of glass samples with chemical formula {[(TeO2)0.7(B2O3)0.3]0.7(ZnO)0.3}1-x(Dy2O3)xwhere x=0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05M fraction were synthesized through conventional melt-quenching method. The most common way to fabricate a glass material is by fusion of two or more component oxides followed by their quenching. This technique is known as melt-quenching technique. Kaur et al. (2016) [1] highlighted that the melt-quenching method able to enhance the mechanical properties like hardness and flexural strength of the material. The nature of the glass systems is proven to be amorphous based on the XRD pattern. The FTIR spectra of the glass systems confirm the existence of five bands which are assigned for the BO4, BO3,TeO4and TeO3vibrational groups. The density of the glass systems is increased with the addition of Dy2O3while the molar volume is found to be inversely proportional to the density of the proposed glass. The optical properties of the glasses are determined through the absorption spectra obtained from the UV-VIS spectrophotometer. From the absorption spectra, the indirect and direct optical band gaps and the Urbach energy are found to be inversely proportional to each other. As the molar fraction of the Dy2O3increased, the optical band gaps are observed to increase as opposed to the Urbach energy. For this glass system, the values of refractive index, electronic polarizability, oxide ion polarizability and the optical basicity are found to decrease as the addition of the dysprosium oxide is increased. From the emission spectra, two intense blue and yellow emission bands are observed, which correspond to the4F9/2→6H15/2and4F9/2→6H13/2transitions of Dy3+ions respectively. The CIE chromaticity coordinates of the zinc borotellurite glass systems are found to be located in the white light region.

Bacterial attachment onto materials has been suggested to be stochastic by some authors but nonstochastic and based on surface properties by others. We investigated this by attaching pairwise combinations of two Salmonella enterica serovar Sofia (S. Sofia) strains (with different physicochemical and attachment properties) with one strain each of S. enterica serovar Typhimurium, S. enterica serovar Infantis, or S. enterica serovar Virchow (all with similar physicochemical and attachment abilities) in ratios of 0.428, 1, and 2.333 onto glass, stainless steel, Teflon, and polysulfone. Attached bacterial cells were recovered and counted. If the ratio of attached cells of each Salmonella serovar pair recovered was the same as the initial inoculum ratio, the attachment process was deemed stochastic. Experimental outcomes from the study were compared to those predicted by the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory. Significant differences (P < 0.05) between the initial and the attached ratios for serovar pairs containing S. Sofia S1296a for all different ratios were apparent for all materials. For S. Sofia S1635-containing pairs, 7 out of 12 combinations of serovar pairs and materials had attachment ratios not significantly different (P > 0.05) from the initial ratio of 0.428. Five out of 12 and 10 out of 12 samples had attachment ratios not significantly different (P > 0.05) from the initial ratios of 1 and 2.333, respectively. These results demonstrate that bacterial attachment to different materials is likely to be nonstochastic only when the key physicochemical properties of the bacteria were significantly different (P < 0.05) from each other. XDLVO theory could successfully predict the attachment of some individual isolates to particular materials but could not be used to predict the likelihood of stochasticity in pairwise attachment experiments.

This paper reports on the direct ability of two positively charged organic polyelectrolytes (natural-based and synthetic) to reduce the atrazine concentration in water. The adsorption study was set up using multiple glass vessels with different polymer dosing levels followed by ultrafiltration with a 1 kDa membrane. The addition of polymers exhibited a capability in reducing the atrazine concentration up to a maximum of 60% in surface-to-volume ratio experiments. In the beginning, the theoretical L-type of the isotherm of Giles' classification was expected with an increase in the dosage of the polymer. However, in this study, the conventional type of isotherm was not observed. It was found that the adsorption of the cationic polymer on the negatively charged glass surface was necessary and influential for the removal of atrazine. Surface-to-volume ratio adsorption experiments were performed to elucidate the mechanisms and the polymer configuration. The glass surface area was determined to be a limiting parameter in the adsorption mechanism.

A radio frequency (RF) resonator using glass-reinforced epoxy material for C and X band is proposed in this paper. Microstrip line technology for RF over glass-reinforced epoxy material is analyzed. Coupling mechanism over RF material and parasitic coupling performance is explained utilizing even and odd mode impedance with relevant equivalent circuit. Babinet's principle is deployed to explicate the circular slot ground plane of the proposed resonator. The resonator is designed over four materials from different backgrounds which are glass-reinforced epoxy, polyester, gallium arsenide (GaAs), and rogers RO 4350B. Parametric studies and optimization algorithm are applied over the geometry of the microstrip resonator to achieve dual band response for C and X band. Resonator behaviors for different materials are concluded and compared for the same structure. The final design is fabricated over glass-reinforced epoxy material. The fabricated resonator shows a maximum directivity of 5.65 dBi and 6.62 dBi at 5.84 GHz and 8.16 GHz, respectively. The lowest resonance response is less than -20 dB for C band and -34 dB for X band. The resonator is prototyped using LPKF (S63) drilling machine to study the material behavior.

We report significant enhancements in Er(3+) luminescence as well as in Raman intensity in silver nanoparticles embedded zinc-tellurite glass. Surface enhanced Raman scattering effect is highlighted for the first time in tellurite glass containing silver NPs resulting in an enhanced Raman signal (~10 times). SAED manifest the growth of Ag(0) nanoparticles along the (111) and (200) crystallographic planes having average diameter in the range 14-36 nm. Surface plasmon resonance bands are observed in the range 484-551 nm. Furthermore, four prominent photoluminescence bands undergo significant enhancements up to 3 times. The enhancement is majorly attributed to the local field effect of silver NPs.
