Acacia polyacantha gum (APG) is a dried exudate which obtained from the stems and branches of Acacia polyacantha trees. APG is rich in soluble dietary fibers as well as organic compounds. In this study quantitation of the levels of total phenolics content (TPC) and antioxidant activities were conducted using ABTS and CUPRAC assays for APG extraction using pure solvents (methanol, ethanol, acetone) and their aqueous mixtures at 50% and 100%. The antioxidant levels were evaluated by 2,2’-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radical cation deculturization and cupric iron reducing capacity in the presence of neocuproine (CUPRAC) for the evaluation of reducing power, and (TPC) was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The solvent Methanol (50%) gave the best extraction ratio for APG presented by highest (TPC 60.78 mg GAE/100g of DW, CUPRAC 34.65 mg TE/100g DW, and, ABTS about 37.65 mg TE/100g DW respectively), followed by ethanol 50% extract. On the other hand, pure methanol showed the lowest TPC 5.33 mg GAE/100g of DW, ABTS 10.9 mg TE/100g DW, and CUPRAC 7.80 mg TE/100g DW, values respectively. Therefore, the variation in the antioxidant capacity of extracts was possibly due to the difference of polarity, immiscibility and the nature of the APG compounds extracted using various solvents. The higher content of antioxidant activity in APG shall be useful to human health if it is properly utilized.

A cross-sectional study looking at the coagulation system was carried out involving 175 women attending the National Population and Family Development Board's Clinic at the Maternity Clinic, General Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. Study subjects comprise of 50 combined low-dose estrogen/progestrogen oral contraceptive (DC) pill users and 75 non-DC users, acting as controls. The subjects were on the pill for a period of one year or more. There were significant shortening of the prothrombin time (PT) and partial thromboplastin time (PIT) in the DC group as compared to the control group. However, the activities of factors II, Vand VIII assayed were not significantly different between the two groups, suggesting that the changes in the PT and PIT were not significant clinically. The effect of long term usage of combined 10w..cJose DC pills does not seem to indicate changes in the coagulation profile of the women in our study.
PIP: The effect of low dose combined oral contraceptives containing 30 mcg ethinyl estradiol and either 150 mcg levonorgestrel or 150 mcg desogestrel on coagulation indices in Malaysian women was examined. 50 women who had been using the pills for 1 year or more, were compared to 75 non-users. All were attending the Maternity Clinic of the General Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. Pill users registered shorter prothrombin time, 11.5 vs. 11.1 seconds (p=0.016), and partial thromboplastin time, 40.1 vs 35.1 seconds (p=0.000). Since there were no significant differences in Factors II, V, VII, or VIII, the overall effects of low-dose pills on coagulation is probably not clinically significant.

Usability and affective issues of using automatic speech recognition technology to interact with an automated teller machine (ATM) are investigated in two experiments. The first uncovered dialogue patterns of ATM users for the purpose of designing the user interface for a simulated speech ATM system. Applying the Wizard-of-Oz methodology, multiple mapping and word spotting techniques, the speech driven ATM accommodates bilingual users of Bahasa Melayu and English. The second experiment evaluates the usability of a hybrid speech ATM, comparing it with a simulated manual ATM. The aim is to investigate how natural and fun can talking to a speech ATM be for these first-time users. Subjects performed the withdrawal and balance enquiry tasks. The ANOVA was performed on the usability and affective data. The results showed significant differences between systems in the ability to complete the tasks as well as in transaction errors. Performance was measured on the time taken by subjects to complete the task and the number of speech recognition errors that occurred. On the basis of user emotions, it can be said that the hybrid speech system enabled pleasurable interaction. Despite the limitations of speech recognition technology, users are set to talk to the ATM when it becomes available for public use.

The extracts of Piper sarmentosum, a medicinal plant, are being used to prepare phytopharmaceuticals while the information about chemical kinetics of constituents of the extract is unavailable to assign precise shelf life (t90) and find optimum storage conditions of the product for patient safety, and to avoid economic repercussions of launching an unstable product. The extract was exposed to three different conditions of high temperature and relative humidity (RH) for six months. The samples were then analyzed at 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 months by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using pellitorine, sarmentine and sarmentosine as markers. Different chemical kinetic parameters of the markers were evaluated by Arrhenius equation to predict shelf life (t90) at different storage conditions and at room temperature. The markers in the extract followed the zero order degradation, and the activation energy, pre exponential factor and rate constant of the reaction of the markers were found to be varying in samples stored at different conditions. The contents of the markers were found to be decreasing at high temperature and humidity with the passage of time. The predicted shelf life (t90) of the markers at room temperature was found to be 16 months approximately. Results of this study indicate that extracts of the plant are stable at room temperature for 16 months. Moreover, the chemical kinetic data of the markers and the analytical method used to quantify the markers may be useful for phytopharmaceutical industry to produce efficacious and stable products from extracts of the plant.

We describe two example pilot efforts to help define new thermoluminescent dosimeter media. The first concerns ZnS:Mn nanophosphors, prepared by chemical precipitation using zinc and sodium sulfate, doped with manganese sulfate at concentrations varying from 1 to 3mol. The second concerns chemical vapor deposited diamond, produced as a thin film or as amorphous carbon on a single-crystal silicon substrate, each deposited under the same conditions, use being made of the hot filament-chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) technique. The gas concentrations used were 1% CH4 in 99% H2 and 25% CH4 in 75% H2. Characterization of formations used FESEM, XRD and EDX. The nanophosphors consisted of particles of sizes in the range 85-150nm, the thermoluminescence (TL)-based radiation detection medium giving rise to a single peaked glow curve of maximum yield at a temperature of 250°C at a heating rate of 5°C/s. The TL response increased linearly with radiation dose, ZnS doped to 2mol of Mn being found the most sensitive. Regarding chemical vapor deposited (CVD) carbon, inappreciable TL was found for the resultant ball-like amorphous carbon films, graphite, and the silicon substrate, whereas CVD diamond films showed a promising degree of linearity with dose. For both the ZnS and diamond samples, TL signal fading was appreciable, being some 40% per day for ZnS and>50% per day for CVD films even under storage in the dark at room temperature, making it apparent that there is need to adjust parameters such as the size of nanoparticles.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Automatic voice-pathology detection and classification systems may help clinicians to detect the existence of any voice pathologies and the type of pathology from which patients suffer in the early stages. The main aim of this paper is to investigate Multidimensional Voice Program (MDVP) parameters to automatically detect and classify the voice pathologies in multiple databases, and then to find out which parameters performed well in these two processes.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples of the sustained vowel /a/ of normal and pathological voices were extracted from three different databases, which have three voice pathologies in common. The selected databases in this study represent three distinct languages: (1) the Arabic voice pathology database; (2) the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary database (English database); and (3) the Saarbruecken Voice Database (German database). A computerized speech lab program was used to extract MDVP parameters as features, and an acoustical analysis was performed. The Fisher discrimination ratio was applied to rank the parameters. A t test was performed to highlight any significant differences in the means of the normal and pathological samples.

RESULTS: The experimental results demonstrate a clear difference in the performance of the MDVP parameters using these databases. The highly ranked parameters also differed from one database to another. The best accuracies were obtained by using the three highest ranked MDVP parameters arranged according to the Fisher discrimination ratio: these accuracies were 99.68%, 88.21%, and 72.53% for the Saarbruecken Voice Database, the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary database, and the Arabic voice pathology database, respectively.

A large population around the world has voice complications. Various approaches for subjective and objective evaluations have been suggested in the literature. The subjective approach strongly depends on the experience and area of expertise of a clinician, and human error cannot be neglected. On the other hand, the objective or automatic approach is noninvasive. Automatic developed systems can provide complementary information that may be helpful for a clinician in the early screening of a voice disorder. At the same time, automatic systems can be deployed in remote areas where a general practitioner can use them and may refer the patient to a specialist to avoid complications that may be life threatening. Many automatic systems for disorder detection have been developed by applying different types of conventional speech features such as the linear prediction coefficients, linear prediction cepstral coefficients, and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs). This study aims to ascertain whether conventional speech features detect voice pathology reliably, and whether they can be correlated with voice quality. To investigate this, an automatic detection system based on MFCC was developed, and three different voice disorder databases were used in this study. The experimental results suggest that the accuracy of the MFCC-based system varies from database to database. The detection rate for the intra-database ranges from 72% to 95%, and that for the inter-database is from 47% to 82%. The results conclude that conventional speech features are not correlated with voice, and hence are not reliable in pathology detection.

In this in vivo study, Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were used to investigate the bioactivity as well as the microstructural and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V samples embedded with hydroxyapatite (HA) using two different coating methods-superplastic embedment (SPE) and superplastic deformation (SPD). The HA layer thickness for the SPE and SPD samples increased from 249.1  ±  0.6 nm to 874.8  ±  13.7 nm, and from 206.1  ±  5.8 nm to 1162.7  ±  7.9 nm respectively, after 12 weeks of implantation. The SPD sample exhibited much faster growth of newly formed HA compared to SPE. The growth of the newly formed HA was strongly dependent on the degree of HA crystallinity in the initial HA layer. After 12 weeks of implantation, the surface hardness value of the SPE and SPD samples decreased from 661  ±  0.4 HV to 586  ±  1.3 HV and from 585  ±  6.6 HV to 425  ±  86.9 HV respectively. The decrease in surface hardness values was due to the newly formed HA layer that was more porous than the initial HA layer. However, the values were still higher than the substrate surface hardness of 321  ±  28.8 HV. Wear test results suggest that the original HA layers for both samples were still strongly intact, and to a certain extent the newly grown HA layers also were strongly bound with the original HA layers. This study confirms the bioactivity and mechanical stability of the HA layer on both samples in vivo.

The development of the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) promotes the integration of the cross-platform systems in fog computing, which enable users to obtain access to multiple application located in different geographical locations. Fog users at the network's edge communicate with many fog servers in different fogs and newly joined servers that they had never contacted before. This communication complexity brings enormous security challenges and potential vulnerability to malicious threats. The attacker may replace the edge device with a fake one and authenticate it as a legitimate device. Therefore, to prevent unauthorized users from accessing fog servers, we propose a new secure and lightweight multi-factor authentication scheme for cross-platform IoT systems (SELAMAT). The proposed scheme extends the Kerberos workflow and utilizes the AES-ECC algorithm for efficient encryption keys management and secure communication between the edge nodes and fog node servers to establish secure mutual authentication. The scheme was tested for its security analysis using the formal security verification under the widely accepted AVISPA tool. We proved our scheme using Burrows Abdi Needham's logic (BAN logic) to prove secure mutual authentication. The results show that the SELAMAT scheme provides better security, functionality, communication, and computation cost than the existing schemes.

Introduction and importance: The differential diagnosis of a paediatric abdominal mass can be extensive, as it potentially involves multiple organs including gastrointestinal, genitourinary, endocrine, and gynaecological systems. Hence, a systematic approach to history taking and physical examination is needed to clinch the diagnosis. Specifically, the approach for assessing, investigating, and managing a ballotable left hypochondrial mass in a child can be challenging.

Case presentation: We report a 10-year-old Dusun girl presenting with left hypochondrial pain and noted a left hypochondrial mass on examination. This report highlights the role of clinical imaging during the pre-operative and post-operative phases.

Clinical discussion: Ultrasound and CT imaging was useful in determining that the tumor originated from the tail of the pancreas. The presence of a definite capsule with internal solid-cystic components helped narrowed the differential diagnosis to solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas. MR liver was useful to rule out liver metastasis in this child.

Intervention and outcome: The patient was scheduled for laparotomy and tumour excision at a regional paediatric centre. Successful excision of the tumor en-mass was performed and the child's subsequent recovery was uneventful.

Conclusion: Clinical imaging plays a critical role in the diagnosis and management of paediatric solid organ tumours. Other than renal origin, suspicion of pancreatic tail origin should be considered by clinicians when encountering a ballotable left abdominal mass.

In heterogeneous wireless networks, the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is an essential contributor to increasing productivity and effectiveness. However, in various domains, such as industrial wireless scenarios, small cell domains, and vehicular ad hoc networks, an efficient and stable authentication algorithm is required (VANET). Specifically, IoT vehicles deal with vast amounts of data transmitted between VANET entities in different domains in such a large-scale environment. Also, crossing from one territory to another may have the connectivity services down for a while, leading to service interruption because it is pervasive in remote areas and places with multipath obstructions. Hence, it is vulnerable to specific attacks (e.g., replay attacks, modification attacks, man-in-the-middle attacks, and insider attacks), making the system inefficient. Also, high processing data increases the computation and communication cost, leading to an increased workload in the system. Thus, to solve the above issues, we propose an online/offline lightweight authentication scheme for the VANET cross-domain system in IIoT to improve the security and efficiency of the VANET. The proposed scheme utilizes an efficient AES-RSA algorithm to achieve integrity and confidentiality of the message. The offline joining is added to avoid remote network intrusions and the risk of network service interruptions. The proposed work includes two different significant goals to achieve first, then secure message on which the data is transmitted and efficiency in a cryptographic manner. The Burrows Abdi Needham (BAN logic) logic is used to prove that this scheme is mutually authenticated. The system's security has been tested using the well-known AVISPA tool to evaluate and verify its security formally. The results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the ID-CPPA, AAAS, and HCDA schemes by 53%, 55%, and 47% respectively in terms of computation cost, and 65%, 83%, and 40% respectively in terms of communication cost.

Most silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET models are application-specific. These are already defined by the manufacturers and their parameters are mostly partially accessible due to restrictions. The desired characteristic of any SiC model becomes highly important if an individual wants to visualize the impact of changing intrinsic parameters as well. Also, it requires a model prior knowledge to vary these parameters accordingly. This paper proposes the parameter extraction and its selection for Silicon Carbide (SiC) power N-MOSFET model in a unique way. The extracted parameters are verified through practical implementation with a small-scale high power DC-DC 5 to 2.5 output voltage buck converter using both hardware and software emphasis. The parameters extracted using the proposed method are also tested to verify the static and dynamic characteristics of SiC MOSFET. These parameters include intrinsic, junction and overlapping capacitance. The parameters thus extracted for the SiC MOSFET are analyzed by device performance. This includes input, output transfer characteristics and transient delays under different temperature conditions and loading capabilities. The simulation and experimental results show that the parameters are highly accurate. With its development, researchers will be able to simulate and test any change in intrinsic parameters along with circuit emphasis.

Soft tissue defects like hernia and post-surgical fistula formation can be resolved with modern biomaterials in the form of meshes without post-operative complications. In the present study hand knitted silk meshes were surface coated with regenerated silk fibroin hydrogel and pure natural extracts. Two phytochemicals (Licorice extract (LE) and Bearberry extract (BE)) and the two honeybee products (royal jelly (RJ) and honey (HE)) were incorporated separately to induce antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing ability to the silk hydrogel coated knitted silk meshes. Meshes were dip coated with a blend of 4 % silk hydrogel (w/v) and 5 % extracts. Dried modified meshes were characterized using SEM, DMA, GC-MS and FTIR. Antimicrobial testing, in-vitro cytotoxicity, in-vitro wound healing and Q-RT-PCR were also performed. SEM analysis concluded that presence of coating reduced the pore size up to 47.7 % whereas, fiber diameter was increased up to 17.9 % as compared to the control. The presence of coating on the mesh improved the mechanical strength/Young's modulus by 1602.8 %, UTS by 451.7 % and reduced the % strain by 51.12 %. Sustained release of extracts from MHRJ (62.9 % up to 72 h) confirmed that it can induce antibacterial activity against surgical infections. Cytocompatibility testing and gene expression results suggest that out of four variables MHRJ presented best cell viability, % wound closure and expression of wound healing marker genes. In-vivo analyses in rat hernia model were carried out using only MHRJ variant, which also confirmed the non- toxic nature and wound healing characteristics of the modified mesh. The improved cell proliferation and activated wound healing in vitro and in vivo suggested that MHRJ could be a valuable candidate to promote cell infiltration and activate soft tissue and hernia repair as a biomedical implant.

Microwave and conventional techniques were employed to synthesize a novel array of compounds 7a-g with 1,2,4-triazole and piperidine rings having great biological importance. The microwave assisted method has a better operational scope with respect to time and yield comparative to the conventional method. 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and IR techniques were employed to justify the structure of synthesized compounds. The antioxidant, butyrylcholinesterase inhibition and urease inhibition potential of every synthesized compound was evaluated. Every member of the synthesized series was found potent against mentioned activities. Compound 7g was the most active anti-urease agent having IC50 (μM) value 16.5±0.09 even better than the thiourea with an IC50(μM) value of 24.3±0.24. The better urease inhibition potential of 7g was also elaborated and explained by docking and bovine serum albumin (BSA) binding studies.

This study focused to optimize the performance of polyethersulfone (PES) hemodialysis (HD) membrane using carboxylic functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNT) and lower molecular weight grade of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP-k30). Initially, MWCNT were chemically functionalized by acid treatment and nanocomposites (NCs) of PVP-k30 and c-MWCNT were formed and subsequently blended with PES polymer. The spectra of FTIR of the HD membranes revealed that NCs has strong hydrogen bonding and their addition to PES polymer improved the capillary system of membranes as confirmed by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and leaching of the additive decreased to 2% and hydrophilicity improved to 22%. The pore size and porosity of NCs were also enhanced and rejection rate was achieved in the establish dialysis range (<60 kDa). The antifouling studies had shown that NCs membrane exhibited 30% less adhesion of protein with 80% flux recovery ratio. The blood compatibility assessment disclosed that NCs based membranes showed prolonged thrombin and prothrombin clotting times, lessened production of fibrinogen cluster, and greatly suppressed adhesion of blood plasma than a pristine PES membrane. The results also unveiled that PVP-k30/NCs improved the surface properties of the membrane and the urea and creatinine removal increased to 72% and 75% than pure PES membranes. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
