Centella asiatica L. is traditionally used as a medicinal herbs and alternative medicine in treating numerous kinds of diseases. The use of Centella in food and beverages has increased over the years. Its potential antioxidant and neuroprotective activity has been widely claimed in many reports and basically is very much related to its properties and mechanism of action of the plant’s bioactive constituents namely the asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassoside and madecassic acid. As such, this review will cover the biological activity of the plant’s active constituents in relation to its food and beverage applications. The plant cultivation and biotechnological approaches to improve the production of desired bioactive constituents by cultured cells will also be reviewed. In addition, the range of chemical compositions found in Centella and safety aspects are also included.
Introduction: This study was conducted on 215 working women from four private corporate companies in a suburb in Malaysia to determine the factors related to their physical activity levels. Methods: Data were collected using a questionnaire which included socio-demographic characteristics, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), perceived barriers and benefits to physical activity, self-efficacy to physical activity and an 8-item questionnaire on current
behavioral stage of physical activity. Results: The majority of the respondents were Malay (81.9%) with 10.2% being Chinese and 7.9% Indian. Most of the respondents were executives (64.2%), while the rest were non-executives (24.7%) and managers (11.2%). The mean weight, height, BMI and waist circumference were 59.4±13.1 kg, 1.6±0.6 m, 23.7±4.8 kg/m² and 77.0±12.1cm respectively. In this sample, 24.7% and 7.9% were overweight and obese respectively, while 34%

Background: A cross sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence of microbiological contamination in ready- to-eat food and factors affecting it in Melaka from February 2008 till May 2008 in collaboration with the Food Safety and Quality Unit and District Health Offices in Melaka Tengah, Alor Gajah and Jasin.
Methods: A purposive sampling of 101 food premises was carried out and 202 ready- to-eat food samples were collected and analysed microbiologically using standard methods. A total of 202 food handlers were randomly selected for questionnaire interview while rectal and nasal swabs were taken from them to determine their healthy carrier status of pathogenic food bacteria.
Results: Results showed that the overall prevalence of microbiological contamination in ready- to-eat food was 35.1%, while prevalence by type of food was 42.0% for main dishes and 9.8% for staple food. The majority of the contaminations were due to coliforms (14.9%), total plate counts (12.4%) and Staphylococcus aureus (3.5%). The mean score for food premise inspection was 77.21 ± 10.32 and the prevalence of healthy carrier status of pathogenic food bacteria among the food handlers was 15.8%. The level of food handling practices among food handlers was influenced by sex (p=0.012) and formal training on food handling courses (p=0.009). There was a significant negative correlation between age and level of food handling practices among the food handlers (r = -0.163; p = 0.02). Introduction: In view of high healthcare expenditure, Malaysia also faces problems in healthcare financing. The policy option is to establish a national health financing scheme. However, it is a problem to develop mechanisms to cover social insurance package to more than one third of the population working in informal sector such as farmers. Therefore, there is an urgent need to assess the ability and willingness of the farming community. The main objective was to study the ability and willingness in the farming community to contribute to national healthcare financing scheme.
Methodology: This a cross sectional study involved 400 farmers in Selangor. A total of 92.3% farmers were able to pay for the healthcare.
Results: Willingness to contribute to The national healthcare financing scheme were RM2.00 per month.
Conclusion: The education level influenced the ability to pay while the educational level and per capita income influenced willingness to pay.

Introduction: Relatives play an important role in patient care - not only providing social support but also help to complement the existing care. They must be empowered with relevant knowledge and skills of patient care including motivating patient towards immediate healing and acceptance of his fate. Although these are various approaches, the media is regarded as the most effective method in educating the family or the relatives. This paper highlights the significant role of the media as an educational tool to mobilize patient’s relatives in total patient care.
Methodology: This is a review conducted on reports, observations and feedbacks gathered from various sources involved in patient education in hospital setting. It was endorsed by a series of in-depth expert forum under patient education module.
Results: Relative empowerment has been identified to be as an important role and yet it is not fully utilized. The manpower resources are so scarce and crucial in patient as well as relative education. The media is the only alternative educational tool that could compliment the educational needs. Of all potential media available in the market we have recognized at least four types of media that can be optimally resourced and used. Through manipulation of its content and making it interactive, the role of media seemed to be extremely effective in patient management that include relatives.
Conclusion: The role of media in relative’s education in support of patient care is undeniable. The media with the most potential should be identified and the management of its content to be enhanced. It must be incorporated with an interactive approach in order to have more self-involvement and undersatanding of its content.

Background: Level of comfort in working environment can contribute to increase level of health, emotion during working, level of safety, quality and productivity of work. A study of physical factors (heat, noise and lighting) is important to determine the level of comfort during working. This study was carried out to study those physical factors upon comfort level during working among Casting Shop workers in a car manufacturing factory.
Methods: Instruments for the physical monitoring including Questemp°36 Thermal Environment Monitor, Sound Level Meter and Lux Meter were used at seven measured areas. The information about the level of comfort during working was collected using questionnaires among 65 respondents by random sampling method.
Results: Measured data showed there were four measured areas which Wet Bulb Globe Temperature indoor (WBGTi) value are above the standard limit recommended by ACGIH, three measured areas recorded noise level above the standard limit recommended by Factories and Machineries (Noise Exposure) 1989, while there was no measured area recorded lighting reading below the standard limit recommended by MS ISO 8995:2005. Result from questionnaire found that the majority of the workers did not feel comfortable towards the heat and noise level in their workplace while most of the respondents felt comfortable towards lighting level in their workplace. Background: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the prevalence of the caregiving burden among women who are caregivers to elderly with stroke and factors influencing it. Respondents identified through purposive sampling at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre from October to December 2007.
Methods: Direct methods of data collection (clinical and housing) and indirect (postal) used a structured questionnaire distributed to the guards. Measurements taken include sociodemographic variables of patients and caregivers, the patient, the care, relationships with caregivers and patients with information about stroke. Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) short version was used to measure the burden of care. Carers' Assessment of Managing Index (Cami) was used to assess coping strategies. A total of 96 respondents took part in this study.
Results: The study showed that prevalence of caregiving burden was 35.4%. Burden of care was found to have significant relationships with factors such as marital status, caregivers (p = 0.017), family income (p = 0040) and the patients (p = 0.000). Significant correlation obtained for the coping strategies with the burden (r =- 0228, p 0026).
Conclusion: The conclusion shows that policy makers and program managers should appreciate and assist caregivers in performing the role of care. Intervention programs should be designed to suit the needs of the heterogeneous guardian.
Background: Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death globally and is projected to remain the leading cause of death. If the trend is allowed to continue, by 2015 an estimated 20 million people will die from cardiovascular disease (mainly because of myocardial infarction and strokes). The number of cardiovascular disease cases in Malaysia has increased to 14% in five years from 96,000 cases in 1995 to 110,000 cases in 2000.
Methods: The cost to treat patients admitted to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (UKMMC) Malaysia, diagnosed with Acute Uncomplicated ST Elevated Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) was calculated by using two different methodologies, namely step down costing methodology and activity based costing using clinical pathway.
Results: Cost for each stay per day at the cardiology ward using the step down methodology is RM596.42. The treatment cost is estimated from RM1, 789.26 to RM 4,771.36. The average cost per episode for STEMI care with the average length of stay for 5.6 days is RM3, 340(SD ±596.42. The cost of coronary PCI procedure in step costing is RM 13,950.00. Hence, the total cost incurs for STEMI with PCI is RM 17,290.00(SD ±596.42) by using step down method. (an average cost per episode is RM3,340, plus the cost of coronary procedure of RM 13,950.00 . However by using the ABC the cost of STEMI (PCI) with an average length of stay for 5.6 days is RM 20,431.39. The study showed the ABC method was higher by 15.3% than the step down costing.
Conclusion: The cost in managing STEMI (PCI) with the average length of stay of 5.6 days was calculated by using two different methodologies, namely step down costing methodology and activity based costing. Cost of treatment calculated by using activity based costing are higher because all resources used are incorporated in detail. The ABC method was higher by 15.3% than the step down costing. The difference is within 80-20 rules and the biggest percentage of cost in both methodsis procedure or PCI cost.

Background: All healthcare services are moving towards quality management system including ISO 9000 due to pressure from various stakeholders involves and also to improve healthcare quality. The objective of this study was to measure the satisfaction level among the outpatients in ISO Certified Klinik Kesihatan Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor. Also to identify the relations of patient’s satisfaction with the sociodemographic factors and service dimensions such as general satisfactions, technical quality of clinic staffs, interpersonal aspect of clinic staffs, time with doctors, communications with clinic staffs and availability/accessibility of clinic.
Methodology: A cross sectional study was carried out from February 2008 to Jun 2008 and a total of 240 respondents in the clinic were selected using universal sampling. Only those who are Malaysians aged 18 and above and complied with the inclusions criteria’s were selected as the respondents to fill up the Patient’s Satisfaction Questionnaire III.
Results: The study found that the satisfaction level of the respondents in Klinik Kesihatan Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor were remarkable with 78.8%.It has been shown that the predictor factors of total patient’s satisfaction were general satisfaction (AOR=5.06, CI= 1.51-16.96), technical quality of clinic staff (AOR = 3.09, CI= 1.13-8.43), interpersonal aspect of clinic staff (AOR = 2.96,CI= 1.04-8.42), availability/accessibility of clinic (AOR = 9.38, CI= 9.37-87.95) and communication of clinic staff ( AOR=17.90, CI=3.74-85.73) with the R2 = 67.7%.
Conclusion: The satisfaction level among the respondents in Klinik Kesihatan Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor were remarkable with percentages of 78.8%. The study has shown that service dimensions factor influenced the patient’s satisfaction such as general satisfaction, interpersonal aspect of staff, communication of staff, technical quality of clinic staff and availability/accessibility of clinic. It could have also been contributed by the implementation of ISO and it can only be confirmed by carrying out a comparison study of patient’s satisfaction in clinics with and without ISO certification.

Background: Safety and health audit study is a part of occupational safety and health risk assesment. Thus, student’s residential audit is important in order tu ensure the safety rules which implemented by the management is appropriate and follow the standard set forth. Furthermore, it also important to determine places, area or situation that might lead to hazard risk so that prevention step could be plan and implement.
Objective: This study was to determine the safety level of students residential in physical aspects.
Methods: Safety inspection or audit conducted is in accordance with criteria and indicators listed in the checklists that have been formed based on the audit forms from the Department of Safety and Health (DOSH), National Institute of Safety and health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Committee of UKMs (JKKP). Several indicators are also included in the audit form as to ensure it covers all the technical aspect and suited with the college conditions. The safety level for each of the blocks in KDO is categorized using points and percentage score obtained.
Results: Based on the overall score, the average safety score in percentage for areas in KDO are preceded by general office with score 85.5% followed by residential blocks with 71.5%, facilities with score 71.2% and administration block with 70.9%. The results of the study show that most of the areas are at least in a safe level.
Conclusion: Roles of employer and college administration, significant OSH programme and safety audit are important factors as to ensure the safety of student's residential college.
Neuronal cell death results from various circumstances such as hypoxia, ischemic and neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). In these events, the resulting modification of neurotransmitters, either excitatory or inhibitory, mediate much of the neuronal damage. However, this consequence depends upon their pre and post synaptic receptor activities which are the key mechanism for signal regulation. Among these, acetylcholine (ACh) is a well known neurotransmitter which is predominantly involved in neuroprotection as well as cognitive functions through its receptors activity, particularly the nicotinic subtypes. Several lines of evidence suggest that among these subtypes, a7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (a7nAChR) offers much promise for neuroprotective role in relation to the central nervous system (CNS) disorders like schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several lines of evidence exist to show the potential mechanisms in which this nAChR subtype and its agonists such as nicotine, that trigger the a7nAChR-mediated suppression of neuronal cell death. This review focuses on the potential role of a7nAChR in neuroprotection by examining recent experimental data, both in vitro and in vivo, that argue for the neuroprotective role of a7nAChR in the CNS.
Glutamate is the principal excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and plays important roles in both physiological and pathological neuronal processes. Current understanding of the exact mechanisms involved in glutamate-induced neuronal excitotoxicity, in which excessive glutamate causes neuronal dysfunction and degeneration, whether acute or chronic, remain elusive. Conditions, due to acute insults such as ischaemia and traumatic brain injury, and chronic neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis and motor neuron disease, suffer from the lack of translational neuroprotection in clinical setting to tackle glutamate excitotoxicity despite steady growth of animal studies that revealed complex cell death pathway interactions. In addition, glutamates are also released by non-neuronal cells including astrocytes and oligodendroglia. Thus, attempts to elucidate this complexity are closely related to our understanding of the glutamatergic circuitry in the brain. Neuronal cells develop a glutamatergic system at glutamatergic synapses that utilise glutamate as an intercellular signaling molecule to characterise the output, input, and termination of this signaling. As to signal input, various kinds of glutamate receptors have been identified and characterized. Na+-dependent glutamate transporters at the plasma membrane are responsible for the signal termination through sequestration of glutamate from the synaptic cleft. The signal output systems comprise vesicular storage and subsequent exocytosis of glutamate by using vesicular glutamate transporters. Similar to the mammalian brain, the regional differences of glutamatergic neurons and glutamate receptor neurons suggest many glutamatergic projections in the avian brain, as supported by recent evidence of glutamate-related genes distribution. Glutamatergic target areas are expected to show high activity of glutamate transporters that remove released glutamate from the synaptic clefts. This review summarises and compares glutamatergic circuits in the avian and mammalian brain, particularly in the olfactory pathway, the paffial organization of glutamatergic neurons and connection with the striatum, hippocampal-septal pathway, visual and auditory pathways, and granule cell-Purkinje cell pathway in the cerebellum. Comparative appreciation of these glutamatergic circuits, particularly with the localisation and/or expression of specific subtypes of glutamate transporters, would provide the morphological basis for physiological and pharmacological designs that supplement existing animal studies of the current proposed mechanisms that underlie glutamate-induced neuronal excitotoxicity.
Ultraviolet radiation is at shorter wavelengths than the visible spectrum (400 to 700 nm) and is divided into three components: UV-A (315 to 400 nm), UV-B (280 to 315 nm), and UV-C (less than 280 nm). Global increases in UV-B fluxes from decreasing stratospheric ozone amounts caused by anthropogenic chlorine releasing gases (mostly chlorofluorocarbons) have been a matter of public concern for the past 20 years. This surface UV irradiance data retrieved from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) from AURA spacecraft with the filename OMUVB. OMUVB contains surface UV irradiance data along with supplementary information generated using the OMI global mode measurements. In this mode each file contains the sunlit portion of a single orbit from pole-to-pole, with an approximately 2600 km wide swath composed of 60 ground pixels. The OMI measurements are used to estimate the ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. The product contains spectral irradiances at 305.1, 310.1, 324.1, and 380.1 nm corresponding to both the overpass time and the local solar noon. Using the correspondence latitude and longitude of Peninsular Malaysia, we can develop the pattern of distribution of UV irradiance interpolations using Sigma Plot and Adobe Photoshop.
This research focuses on the ASTER DEM generation for visual and mathematical analysis of topography, landscapes and landforms, as well as modeling of surface processes of Central Alborz, Iran. ASTER DEM 15 m generated using tie points over the Central Alborz and Damavand volcano with 5671 m height from ASTER (Advanced Space borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) satellite data using PCI Geomatica 9.1. Geomorphic parameters are useful to identify and describe geomorphologic forms and processes, which were extracted from ASTER DEM in GIS environment such as elevation, aspect, slope angle, vertical curvature, and tangential curvature. Although the elevation values are slightly low in altitudes above 5500 m asl., the ASTER DEM is useful in interpretation of the macro- and meso-relief, and provides the opportunity for mapping especially at medium scales (1:100,000 and 1:50,000). ASTER DEM has potential to be a best tool to study 3D model for to geomorphologic mapping and processes of glacial and per glacial forms above 4300 m asl.

This paper presents a new approach to identify fatigue damaging potential locations using the Morlet wavelet coefficients. For solving the subject matter, the 122.4 second SAESUS strain signal was selected for the simulation purpose. As the result, the Morlet wavelet coefficients predicted that the maximum fatigue damage occurs at 40.4 - 42.6 seconds and 67.4 - 70 seconds. For the validation purpose, the Morrow’s fatigue damaging value was calculated and was obtained that the maximum fatigue damage occurs at 0 seconds and 99.7 seconds. The fatigue damaging value at the points was 0.0047 cycles to failure. Since both the plots had similar pattern, the Morlet wavelet coefficients could be used as the early warning of the fatigue damaging potential locations, although the locations were not entirely correct.

Melaleuca cajuputi and Acacia auriculiformis trees are major sources of nectar and pollen for Apis dorsata and the colonies are a major source of honey to the rural poor, honey hunters. Honey is a supplementary income to many of these people (including school children) in the Marang district, Terengganu. In this study, Marang area with 270 square kilometers was chosen as pilot study area in Terengganu state for mapping M. cajuputi and A. auriculiformis as two dominant species in low land secondary forest in Terengganu state.To inventory and produce land use map of Melaleuca forest in Marang area, in this study SPOT-5 satellite image in multispectral mode with 10 meter resolution which is acquired in 2007 as optical satellite was utilized. Most images from optical satellites have some null data from ground because of clouds and shadow of clouds. To solve this problem, Hue, Saturation and value (HSV) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were used as fusion techniques to replace null data with microwave data which taken from Radarsat-1 image in C-band with 25 meter resolution image. Accordingly, fusion technique which was used in this research not only was a technique to improve information but also caused the accuracy increasing than land use map by just only SPOT-5 image. Also between two different fusion techniques, PCA shows the better result than HSV as two different fusion techniques.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a ubiquitous, an indoor and outdoor air pollutant. It is not a significant greenhouse gas as it absorbs little infrared radiation from the Earth. It is produced by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, and biomass burning. The CO data are obtained from Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) onboard NASA’s Aqua satellite. The AIRS provides information for several greenhouse gases, CO2, CH4, CO, and O3 as a one goal of the AIRS instrument (included on the EOS Aqua satellite launched, May 4, 2002) as well as to improve weather prediction of the water and energy cycle. The results of the analysis of the retrieved CO total column amount (CO_total_column_A) as well as effective of the CO volume mixing ratio (CO_VMR_eff_A), Level-3 monthly (AIR*3STM) 1º*1º spatial resolution, ascending are used to study the CO distribution over the East and West Malaysia for the year 2003. The CO maps over the study area were generated by using Kriging Interpolation technique and analyzed by using Photoshop CS. Variations in the biomass burning and the CO emissions where noted, while the highest CO occurred at late dry season in the region which has experienced extensive biomass burning and greater draw down of CO occurred in the pristine continental environment (East Malaysia). In all cases, the CO concentration at West Malaysia is higher than East Malaysia. The southeastern Sarawak (lat. 3.5˚ - long. 115.5˚) is less polluted regions and less the CO in most of times in the year. Examining satellite measurements revealed that the enhanced CO emission correlates with occasions of less rainfall during the dry season.

Microwave Remote sensing data have been widely used in land cover and land use classification. The objective of this research paper is to investigate the feasibility of the multi-polarized ALOS-PALSAR data for land cover mapping. This paper presents the methodology and preliminary result including data acquisitions, data processing and data analysis. Standard supervised classification techniques such as the maximum likelihood, minimum distance-to-mean, and parallelepiped were applied to the ALOS-PALSAR images in the land cover mapping analysis. The PALSAR data training areas were chosen based on the information obtained from
optical satellite imagery. The best supervise classifier was selected based on the highest overall accuracy and
kappa coefficient. This study indicated that the land cover of Butterworth, Malaysia can be mapped accurately
using ALOS PALSAR data.
Digital elevation model (DEM) generation from stereo images is an effective and economical method in topography mapping. This paper used the stereo pair methodology to generate the digital elevation model (DEM) from PRISM (Panchromatic Remote-Sensing Instrument Satellite) sensor which is onboard of ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite). The pair of forward-backward is used as stereoscopic imagery in this study. Ten ground control points (GCPs) are collected with residual error 0.49 pixels to generate an absolute DEM. This generated DEM with 2.5 m spatial resolution is then matched with the 90 m spatial resolution of
SRTM (Space Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) DEM to compare the result. Although SRTM-DEM has a much coarser resolution, the positional accuracy of the matching is found. The difference of the height from the mean sea level (MSL) between the SRTM-DEM and the PRISM-DEM is analyzed and the correlation between the two DEMs is R²=0.8083. The accuracy of the DEM generated is given by the RMSE value of 0.8991 meter.

The problem of difficulty in obtaining cloud-free scene at the equatorial region from satellite platforms can be
overcome by using airborne imagery as an attempt for introducing an economical method of remote sensing
data; which only requires a digital camera to provide near time data. Forty three digital images were captured
using a high resolution digital camera model pentax optio A40 (12 megapixels)at a selected location in the same day in Penang Island from a low-altitude flying autopilot aircraft (CropCam) to generate land use/land cover (LULC) map of the test area. The CropCam was flown at an average altitude of 320 meters over the ground while capturing images which were taken during two flying missions for the duration of approximately 15 and 20 minutes respectively. The CropCam was equipped with a digital camera as a sensor to capture the GPS points based digital images according to the present time to ensure the mosaic of the digital images. Forty one images were used in providing a mosaic image of a bigger coverage of area (full panorama). Training samples were collected simultaneously when the CropCam captured the images by using hand held GPS. Supervised classification techniques, such as the maximum likelihood, minimum-to-distance, and parallelepiped were applied to the panoramic image to generate LULC map for the study area. It was found that the maximum likelihood classifier produce superior results and achieved a high degree of accuracy. The results indicated that the CropCam equipped with a high resolution digital camera can be useful and suitable tool for the tropical region, and this technique could reduce the cost and time of acquiring images for LULC mapping.
