    Hyperglycemia in diabetes mediates the release of angiogenic factors, oxidative stress, hypoxia, and inflammation, which in turn stimulate angiogenesis. Excessive angiogenesis can cause diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic nephropathy. All of these complications are debilitating, which may lead to an increased susceptibility to lower-limb amputations due to ulcerations and infections. In addition, microvascular alterations, segmental demyelination, and endoneurial microangiopathy may cause progressive deterioration ultimately leading to kidney failure and permanent blindness. Some medicinal plants have potent anti-angiogenic, antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties that can ameliorate angiogenesis in diabetes. The purpose of this systematic review is to demonstrate the potential of medicinal plants in ameliorating the neovascularization activities in diabetes. Manuscripts were searched from PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus databases, and Google Scholar was used for searching additional papers. From 1862 manuscripts searched, 1854 were excluded based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and 8 were included into this systematic review, whereas the required information was extracted and summarized. All identified medicinal plants decreased the high blood glucose levels in diabetes, except the aqueous extract of Lonicerae japonicae flos (FJL) and Vasant Kusumakar Ras. They also increased the reduced body weight in diabetes, except the aqueous extract of FL and total lignans from Fructus arctii. However, methanolic extract of Tinospora cordifolia and Vasant Kusumakar Ras were not tested for their ability to affect the body weight. Besides, all medicinal plants identified in this systematic review decreased the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein expression and vasculature activity demonstrated by histopathological examination indicating promising anti-angiogenic properties. All medicinal plants identified in this systematic review have a potential to ameliorate neovascularization activities in diabetes by targeting the mechanistic pathways related to oxidative stress, inflammation, and angiogenesis.

    Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a major public health issue, which then progresses to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) sooner or later. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine the renal survival time of CKD patients. In total, 247 CKD patients in one of the tertiary referral hospitals in Malaysia between January 2005 and December 2015 were enrolled. All CKD patients were included if they were dependent on dialysis. Patients who were transferred out and those with incomplete records were excluded from the study. The renal survival time was calculated from the time of the first diagnosis of CKD to a confirmed ESRD diagnosis or the use of dialysis. In total, 193 (78.1%) CKD patients progressed to ESRD. The mean age of the ESRD patients was 53 years old. The majority of ESRD patients were male (57.0%) and of Malay ethnicity (89.6%). The most common comorbidities among ESRD patients were hypertension (92.2%) and diabetes mellitus (85.5%). The majority of patients were in Stage IV and V (97.9%). The overall renal survival time of CKD patients who develop ESRD was 26 months (95% confidence interval: 20.41, 31.59). Patients who smoked (P = 0.001), had hyperlipidemia (P <0.001) and consumed lipid-lowering agents (P = 0.004) had a significant P-value in the log-rank test. The progression of CKD from diagnosis to ESRD was within 2 years. Therefore, early recognition of CKD is important to improve patients' outcomes and prolong their renal survival time.

    Background: Endometriosis (EM) is a common gynecological condition in women of reproductive age, with diverse causes and a not yet fully understood pathogenesis. Traditional diagnostics rely on single diagnostic biomarkers and does not integrate a variety of different biomarkers. This study introduces multiple machine learning techniques, enhancing the accuracy of predictive models. A novel diagnostic approach that combines various biomarkers provides a new clinical perspective for improving the diagnostic efficiency of endometriosis, holding significant potential for clinical application. Methods: In this study, GSE51981 was used as a test set, and 11 machine learning algorithms (Lasso, Stepglm, glmBoost, Support Vector Machine, Ridge, Enet, plsRglm, Random Forest, LDA, XGBoost, and NaiveBayes) were employed to construct 113 predictive models for endometriosis. The optimal model was determined based on the AUC values derived from various algorithms. These genes were then evaluated using nine machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, SVM, Gradient Boosting Machine, LASSO, XGB, NNET, Generalized Linear Model, KNN, and Decision Tree) to assess significance scores and identify diagnostic genes for each algorithm. The diagnostic value of these genes was further validated in external datasets from GSE7305, GSE11691, and GSE120103. Results: Analysis of the GSE51981 dataset revealed 62 DEGs. The Stepglm [Both] and plsRglm algorithms identified 30 genes with the most potential using the AUC evaluation. Subsequently, nine machine learning algorithms were applied to select diagnostic genes, leading to the identification of five key diagnostic genes using the LASSO algorithm. The ADAT1 gene exhibited the best single-gene predictive performance, with an AUC of 0.785. A combination of genes (FOS, EPHX1, DLGAP5, PCSK5, and ADAT1) achieves an AUC of 0.836 in the test dataset. Moreover, these genes consistently exhibited an AUC exceeding 0.78 in all validation datasets, demonstrating superior predictive performance. Furthermore, correlation analysis with immune infiltration strengthened their predictive value by demonstrating the close relationship of the diagnostic genes with immune infiltrating cells. Conclusion: A combination of biomarkers consisting of FOS, EPHX1, DLGAP5, PCSK5, and ADAT1 can serve as a diagnostic tool for endometriosis, enhancing diagnostic efficiency. The association of these genes with immune infiltrating cells reveals their potential role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis, providing new insights for early detection and treatment.

    <b>Background and Objective:</b> The <i>Helarctos malayanus</i> is the sole bear species-living in Indonesia (Sumatra and Borneo). The available biological data for sun bears (<i>H. malayanus</i>) in Sumatra is limited, especially for morphological and genetic data. A morphological approach is difficult to do. Therefore, a molecular approach is the most likely choice. Phylogenetic analysis was carried out on <i>H. malayanus</i> in Central Sumatra (Dharmasraya, South Solok and Riau) using the Cytochrome B gene. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Blood samples from three individuals of <i>H. malayanus</i> were obtained at the Sumatran Tiger Rehabilitation Center, Dharmasraya. Three <i>H. malayanus</i> Central Sumatra sequences and 62 GenBank sequences were used in the analysis. The DNA sequences were analyzed using the DNA Star, AliView, Bioedit, DNA SP, haplotype network, IQ Tree and MEGA software. <b>Results:</b> Forty-one haplotypes were identified in 65 sequences, with 17 haplotypes belonging to <i>H. malayanus</i>. Haplotype network analysis divides <i>H. malayanus</i> into Haplogroup I (Sundaland) and Haplogroup II (Mainland). All individuals of <i>H. malayanus</i> in Central Sumatra have the same haplotype as Peninsular Malaysia sequence. The sun bear (<i>H. malayanus</i>) has a monophyletic relationship with other bear species. The <i>H. malayanus</i> has a higher genetic distance between the two lineages (1.0-2.3%) than the genetic distance within the subpopulations of each lineage. <b>Conclusion:</b> The study results supported sun bear (<i>H. malayanus</i>) divided into two different lineages: Mainland (subcluster 1) and Sundaland (subcluster 2 and 3). The geographic isolation causes the absence of gene flow, which results in high genetic distance between sun bears (<i>H. malayanus</i>) in Sundaland and Mainland lineages.

    This study examines the life cycle analysis of the manufacturing of 1 kg of green tea using various disposal techniques, including landfill procedure, incineration, and modification of green tea waste as an adsorbent for heavy metal removal. OpenLCA is used to produce the evaluation. To identify the objectives and scope, inventory analysis, effect, and interpretation, the assessment process corresponds to ISO 14044 of 2006. AGRIBALYSE version 3 is the database used to evaluate the environmental effects. A reference unit called a DALY is used to study the environmental impact. For the LCA of green tea, there were four main effect categories that were taken into consideration: human carcinogenic toxicity, human non-carcinogenic toxicity, global warming (human health), and fine particle creation. The outcome demonstrates that processing 1 kg of green tea waste has an environmental effect that is around 63% greater than incinerating it and roughly 58% higher than dumping it in a landfill. However the ecology is more affected by the adsorption process than by landfill and incineration of green tea waste. Even yet, if the preparation is done in bulk, the process can be improved by altering the adsorption of green tea waste.

    INTRODUCTION: Early diagnosis of sepsis and discrimination from SIRS is crucial for clinicians to provide appropriate care, management and treatment to critically ill patients. We describe identification of mRNA biomarkers from peripheral blood leukocytes, able to identify severe, systemic inflammation (irrespective of origin) and differentiate Sepsis from SIRS, in adult patients within a multi-center clinical study.

    METHODS: Participants were recruited in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) from multiple UK hospitals, including fifty-nine patients with abdominal sepsis, eighty-four patients with pulmonary sepsis, forty-two SIRS patients with Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OOHCA), sampled at four time points, in addition to thirty healthy control donors. Multiple clinical parameters were measured, including SOFA score, with many differences observed between SIRS and sepsis groups. Differential gene expression analyses were performed using microarray hybridization and data analyzed using a combination of parametric and non-parametric statistical tools.

    RESULTS: Nineteen high-performance, differentially expressed mRNA biomarkers were identified between control and combined SIRS/Sepsis groups (FC>20.0, p<0.05), termed 'indicators of inflammation' (I°I), including CD177, FAM20A and OLAH. Best-performing minimal signatures e.g. FAM20A/OLAH showed good accuracy for determination of severe, systemic inflammation (AUC>0.99). Twenty entities, termed 'SIRS or Sepsis' (S°S) biomarkers, were differentially expressed between sepsis and SIRS (FC>2·0, p-value<0.05).

    DISCUSSION: The best performing signature for discriminating sepsis from SIRS was CMTM5/CETP/PLA2G7/MIA/MPP3 (AUC=0.9758). The I°I and S°S signatures performed variably in other independent gene expression datasets, this may be due to technical variation in the study/assay platform.

    The quality of emergency services is one of the indicators describing the health status of countries. Moreover, the specialization of services and targeted response to any accident or disease has been the priority of pre-hospital emergency operations in some leading countries. This study aimed to compare the special services provided in the emergency department of several selected countries. This was a comparative study that was done in Isfahan in 2022. Data were collected by reviewing the literature provided by libraries and emergency websites of selected countries. We selected countries based on the accessibility of information in two groups of developed countries and countries with the same income and population as Iran including Germany, France, The United States, Australia, Britain, Malaysia, and Turkey. Data were classified and compared based on staff, vehicles, and specialized services. Emergency staffs in most countries were of different skill and training levels. Ambulances varied in equipment types in various land, air, and sea forms and dimensions. Developed countries had more modern ambulances and equipment. France and Germany were operating more especially. Specialized teams are dispatched only in the United States and Germany. Existing studies have shown the adequacy and effectiveness of these teams in reducing complications and mortality and improving the prognosis of patients. The use of specialized teams appropriate to each emergency based on the specific and targeted response is effective in improving the prognosis of patients. The results of this study are suggested to beneficiaries to improve the quality of emergency care and reduce complications and potential causalities.

    BACKGROUND: Freehand transperineal prostate biopsy (TPPBx) using a coaxial needle technique offers an alternative to probe-mounted freehand or template-guided techniques in the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa). It only requires the same equipment used for transrectal ultrasound-guided (TRUS) biopsy. Our study is the first in Malaysia to report this experience and its outcomes. We aim to determine PCa detection rate and pain tolerability of freehand TPPBx utilizing a coaxial needle under local anesthesia (LA).

    METHODS: Institutional review board approval was obtained from National Medical Research Register (NMRR ID-21-02052-VIL). We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent TPPBx between August 2020 and April 2022. Records were reviewed for patients' characteristics, prostate volume, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) results, biopsy results and pain tolerability. Data was analyzed to determine PCa and clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) detection rate. LA was achieved using perineal skin infiltration and a periprostatic nerve block. The commonly used standard side-firing transrectal ultrasound with its Prostate Biplane Transducer was used as an imaging guide. The principles of the Ginsburg protocol were followed. Pain tolerability was assessed using a visual analog scale.

    RESULTS: A total of 55 patients with elevated PSA levels underwent freehand TPPBx under LA. The mean age was 67.3 years, the median PSA was 14.2 ng/mL, and the median PSA density (PSAD) was 0.33 ng/mL/cc. The optimal PSAD cutoff for predicting csPCa was 0.35 ng/mL/cc (area under the curve [AUC], 0.792; sensitivity, 87.5%; specificity, 69.2%).     Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESA) refer to areas that are of critical importance in terms of ecosystem services such as goods, services and life-support systems, such as water purification, pest control and erosion regulation. In addition, they also refer to areas that harbour the wealth of the nation's biodiversity. However, the classification of ESA in Malaysia is incomprehensible and lacks weightage on biological elements as the current classification is more centred on physical attributes. In order to enhance the existing classification of ESA by introducing biological elements, biological data are urgently required, especially for forest reserves and protected habitat. Hence, we conducted understorey birds surveys in three ESA rank II permanent forest reserves, located in northern Selangor as baseline information to strengthen the ESA classification. The surveys were carried out using mist-netting in three 400 m × 200 m plots. Alpha diversity indices were calculated and showed a significant difference in terms of diversity, composition and biomass of understorey birds between investigated sites. Analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) showed that bird assemblages from forest reserves designated as ESA rank II in Selangor, based on disturbances levels, have weakly diverged and SIMPER analysis has identified six species that contributed to 60% of the differences amongst the bird assemblages. The finding provides the first insight into understorey birds of the study sites and the importance of conserving and preserving ESA of permanent forest reserves, especially the small and fragmented forests.

    BACKGROUND: Prior to this study, the genus Serendib Deeleman-Reinhold, 2001 has been discovered in Indonesia, Thailand and Laos and comprises three species: S.muadai Jäger, Nophaseud & Praxaysombath, 2012, S.suthepica Deeleman-Reinhold, 2001 and S.volans Deeleman-Reinhold, 2001.

    NEW INFORMATION: The genus Serendib Deeleman-Reinhold, 2001 is reviewed. A new species, S.hispida sp. n. (male and female), representing the first record of genus Serendib from Malaysia, is described. Descriptions and illustrations of the females of S.volans (Malaysia) and S.suthepica (China) are also provided. The latter represents the first record of the genus in China.

    BACKGROUND: A total of 87 freshwater fish species from 30 families were recorded from the Kenyir Reservoir, Peninsular Malaysia, where 75 are native and 12 are introduced species. Few species still have unstable taxonomy identities which urge further studies. Most of the species were categorised as Least Concern (LC) and two were threatened species; Endangered and Critically Endangered (EN and CR). One introduced species, Gambusiaaffinis is widespread in the human-associated area, while other introduced fish species can be considered low in numbers.

    NEW INFORMATION: Twenty five fish species are recorded for the first time in the Kenyir Reservoir.

    The lowland region of Sumatra Barat has received little attention in previous biodiversity studies. Past studies have mainly focused on highland habitat and conservation areas. However, many populations of Cyrtodactylus in the lowland habitats of Sumatra Barat were not correctly identified. A phylogenetic tree based on the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (ND2) gene showed that the lowland Sumatran population is the sister group of the Malaysian lowland species, C.semenanjungensis, together nesting within the agamensis group. The genetic divergence within the Sumatra Barat population is 0-4.2% and 18.3-20% to C.semenanjungensis. Further examination of morphological characters revealed that they differed from the sister clade and other Sumatran Cyrtodactylus members by a unique combination of characters such as absence of tubercle on brachium, presence of tubercle on ventrolateral fold, 32-41 paravertebral tubercles, 38-46 ventral scales, enlarged femoral scales, presence of precloacofemoral pores and 22-23 subdigital lamellae under fourth toe. Based on the morphological and molecular evidence, the lowland Sumatran population is herein described as a new species, increasing the number of species in Sumatra to seven. More comprehensive and intensive sampling efforts would most likely yield further discoveries in the group of Sumatran Cyrtodactylus in the near future.

    BACKGROUND AND AIM: Some Indonesian islands, including Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Java, and East Nusa Tenggara, have endemic rabies. Rabies outbreaks in Bali began from 2008 to 2011 and continue to occur sporadically. This study aimed to study the molecular analysis and geographical distribution of Indonesian rabies virus (RABV) from 2016 to 2021 and compare to previous periods.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: Virus isolates from 2016 to 2021 were extracted from dog brains and sequenced at the nucleoprotein gene locus. They were compared with data sequences available in the GenBank database. Indonesian RABV from the previous three periods (before 1989, 1997-2003, and 2008-2010) was extracted from the GenBank database. The genetic diversity in this study was based on the N gene of Indonesian RABV.

    RESULTS: Asian RABV, which is genetically close to the Indonesian virus, is a virus from China (ASIA-3 cluster) and from the Southeast Asia region, namely, virus isolates from Sarawak and Malaysia and some Cambodian isolates. Rabies virus, which was isolated from the Bali islands, was the new cluster first detected and published in Bali, Indonesia, in 2008, while RABV from West Sumatra Province, which was isolated from 2016 to 2021, was also considered a new cluster that is genetically distant from other clusters in Indonesia.

    CONCLUSION: The RABV in Indonesia is divided into five clusters. The isolates from West Sumatra Province from 2016 to 2021 were a new cluster genetically distant from other Indonesian viruses.

    This study documents information on the composition, diversity, richness, and temporal occurrence of snakes at Sekayu's lowland forest (SLF), Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia for the first time. The snakes recorded within the SLF were sampled opportunistically from 2013 to 2019, employing the Visual Encounter Survey method (VES) and L-shape pitfall traps with drift fences. Forty-six snake species from 37 genera belonging to the nine families were recorded, of which 11 were new records to Terengganu. Individual-based rarefaction and extrapolation curves were not reaching asymptote, indicating that additional species can be recorded at the study area. Non-parametric species richness estimators estimated and produced a range between 51 and 57 species. ACE was the best estimator based on the quantitative evaluation. All species showed some variations of occurrence patterns across months. Fourteen species were only encountered once across the sampling years, and interestingly 11 of them were only detected during the rainy season (late October to January). In general, the number of species richness, abundance, and rare species were high during this season. Species richness of snakes is high at SLF but sampling effort should be intensified, especially during these rainy months, to obtain a robust estimated snake species richness in SLF. Terengganu harbor considerably high species richness of snakes with a total of 71 species to date (excluding marine snakes), but snake diversity is still underestimated as only a few localities were surveyed in the past years, primarily at the northern part. Future surveys should be commenced at the central and southern parts of Terengganu to complement the current investigation.

    BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a dengue intervention program in economically deprived urban regions of India, with a particular emphasis on housing conditions and community involvement. Given the global significance of dengue fever as a vector-borne disease, successful vector management requires effective community engagement. Study Design: A quasi-experimental study.

    METHODS: This study was conducted with 314 participants from Delhi's Sanjay Colony, divided into control and intervention groups. The study spanned 14 months (August 2020 to September 2021). The intervention program comprised two educational sessions held one month apart, covering dengue awareness, health self-care, and environmental maintenance. Data were collected at baseline, after each intervention session, and during a final follow-up assessment three months later.

    RESULTS: The primary outcome, the house index (HI), revealed statistically significant differences (P<0.001) favoring the intervention group. The total score (TS) for mosquito-borne disease, TS of knowledge, TS of attitude, and TS of practices all exhibited significant improvements in the intervention group. Participants showed an enhanced understanding of dengue causes, symptoms, and mosquito behavior related to breeding and biting. The HI in the intervention group decreased significantly from 21.65% to 4.45% (P<0.05).

    CONCLUSION: This study, grounded in the health belief model (HBM), demonstrated the effectiveness of the intervention program in reducing HI and improving knowledge and preventive practices regarding dengue fever in impoverished urban neighborhoods of Delhi. The intervention program may be beneficial in such a poor urban community.

    MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study that comprised dental study models of 74 UCLP Saudi children aged 8-10 years who were recruited from 14 referral cleft centers. All participants had their cleft lip and palate repaired with no history of alveolar bone graft or any orthodontic treatment. Dental arch relationships of UCLP patients were assessed using the Great Ormond Street, London, and Oslo (GOSLON) Yardstick-a clinical tool that categorizes dental relationships of UCLP children into five discrete grades from I to V. The reliability of the rating was assessed with weighted kappa (κ) statistics.

    RESULTS: Three children (4.1%) had excellent surgical outcomes (grade I), 18 children (24.3%) filled into grade II (good outcome), 22 subjects (29.7%) had grade III (fair outcome), 27 children (36.5%) had grade IV (poor outcome), and 4 subjects (5.4%) were ranked as having very poor outcomes (grade V). The mean GOSLON score was 3.39. Intrarater and interrater agreements were high indicating good reproducibility.

    CONCLUSION: Based on the dental arch relationships, the treatment outcome of UCLP Saudi children was unsatisfactory, with a mean GOSLON score of 3.39. Delayed palate repair and the use of presurgical orthopedics may be considered in the future for cleft deformity management.

    The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system is a major factor controlling cancer immunosurveillance and response to immunotherapy, yet its status in pediatric cancers remains fragmentary. We determined high-confidence HLA genotypes in 576 children, adolescents and young adults with recurrent/refractory solid tumors from the MOSCATO-01 and MAPPYACTS trials, using normal and tumor whole exome and RNA sequencing data and benchmarked algorithms. There was no evidence for narrowed HLA allelic diversity but discordant homozygosity and allele frequencies across tumor types and subtypes, such as in embryonal and alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, neuroblastoma MYCN and 11q subtypes, and high-grade glioma, and several alleles may represent protective or susceptibility factors to specific pediatric solid cancers. There was a paucity of somatic mutations in HLA and antigen processing and presentation (APP) genes in most tumors, except in cases with mismatch repair deficiency or genetic instability. The prevalence of loss-of-heterozygosity (LOH) ranged from 5.9 to 7.7% in HLA class I and 8.0 to 16.7% in HLA class II genes, but was widely increased in osteosarcoma and glioblastoma (~15-25%), and for DRB1-DQA1-DQB1 in Ewing sarcoma (~23-28%) and low-grade glioma (~33-50%). HLA class I and HLA-DR antigen expression was assessed in 194 tumors and 44 patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) by immunochemistry, and class I and APP transcript levels quantified in PDXs by RT-qPCR. We confirmed that HLA class I antigen expression is heterogeneous in advanced pediatric solid tumors, with class I loss commonly associated with the transcriptional downregulation of HLA-B and transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) genes, whereas class II antigen expression is scarce on tumor cells and occurs on immune infiltrating cells. Patients with tumors expressing sufficient HLA class I and TAP levels such as some glioma, osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma and non-rhabdomyosarcoma soft-tissue sarcoma cases may more likely benefit from T cell-based approaches, whereas strategies to upregulate HLA expression, to expand the immunopeptidome, and to target TAP-independent epitopes or possibly LOH might provide novel therapeutic opportunities in others. The consequences of HLA class II expression by immune cells remain to be established. Immunogenetic profiling should be implemented in routine to inform immunotherapy trials for precision medicine of pediatric cancers.

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Even though Ghana has recorded an appreciable level of facility delivery compared to other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the country still has a lot of regional and community variations in facility delivery where professional maternal health care is guaranteed. This study assessed the main factors associated with facility delivery in the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly of the Northern Region of Ghana.

    METHODS: Using a simple random sampling method, a retrospective community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July 12, 2021 to October 17, 2021, among 306 postnatal women within 15 to 49 years who had delivered within the last six months. We conducted descriptive analyses, and the Pearson chi-square test of association between the sociodemographic factors and obstetrics history with the outcome variable, choice of place of birth. Lastly, significant variables in the chi-square test were entered into adjusted multivariate logistics regression to determine their association with the place of delivery. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version-25, with statistical significance set at a p-value of 0.05.

    RESULTS: The study reported a facility delivery rate of 82%, which is slightly higher than the national target (80%). We observed that age group [AOR 2.34 (1.07-5.14)], marital status [AOR 0.31 (0.12-0.81)], ethnicity [AOR 3.78 (1.18-12.13)], and couple's occupation [AOR 24.74 (2.51-243.91)] were the significant sociodemographic factors influencing facility delivery. The number of antenatal care (ANC) attendance [AOR 8.73 (3.41 - 22.2)] and previous pregnancy complications [AOR 2.4 (1.11 - 5.7)] were the significant obstetrics factors influencing facility delivery.

    CONCLUSION AND GLOBAL HEALTH IMPLICATIONS: We found that specific sociodemographic and obstetric factors significantly influence the choice of place of delivery in the study area. To address this, the study recommends targeted interventions that focus on providing support and resources for women from different age groups, marital statuses, ethnicities, and occupational backgrounds to access facility delivery services. Additionally, improving ANC attendance and effectively managing pregnancy complications were highlighted as important measures to encourage facility-based deliveries.

    OBJECTIVE: To analyze the safety and effectiveness of the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) liquid embolic agent Squid (Emboflu, Switzerland) for the treatment of brain arteriovenous malformations.

    MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES: Between April 2015 and July 2017, 46 embolization treatments for brain arteriovenous malformations (BAVM) were performed in 25 patients using two Squid formulations (18 and 12). Six female and 19 male patients with a mean age of 34 years (range, 9-62 years) were included. A total of 46 procedures were performed. The BAVMs were classified as Spetzler-Martin grade II in 4 procedures, III in 27 procedures, and 1V in 15 procedures. Among the 25 patients, 15 presented with hemorrhage, 5 with seizures, and 5 with headache and neurology. The BAVMs were located in the temporal lobe in 5 patients, parietal lobe in 7 patients, frontal lobe in 3 patients, posterior fossa in 6 patients, basal ganglia in 3 patients, and parasagittal lobe in 1 patient.

    RESULTS: The obliteration rate of the BAVMs ranged from 10% to 100%, with a mean of 33%. Most patients underwent their first or second embolization procedure. Four patients (8%) developed intracranial bleeding post-procedure, with one death (2%). One patient (2%) experienced a seizure during the procedure; however, no intracranial bleeding was observed. Seven patients (15%) experienced perforations during catheter manipulation. One case (2%) of a fractured catheter was recorded, but no significant complications were observed. The average volume of copolymer injected was 0.6 ​ml per nidus. Thirteen procedures used the Squid-12 formulation, 29 procedures used the Squid-18 formulation, and 3 procedures used a combination of Squid-12 and -18 formulations.

    CONCLUSION: Squid is a safe and effective embolic agent for treating BAVMs.

    The status of the indigenous Southeast Asian apple snails belonging to the genus Pila is of concern due to their fast rate of population decline, possibly as a result of multiple factors including habitat loss or disturbance and the introduction of globally-invasive apple snails, Pomacea spp. Conservation actions, including captive breeding of the native Pila species, have been suggested as urgent remedial practices, but the lack of knowledge regarding the fundamental reproductive biology of indigenous Pila spp. makes such practices difficult. In the present study, observations on the mating and egg-laying behaviour of an economic valuable apple snail native to Southeast Asia, P.virescens, were conducted using video recording to examine and describe their reproductive behaviour under a laboratory condition. A total of 15 types of mating and seven egg-laying behaviour were recorded. The mating sequence which subsequently resulted in egg laying was comprised of seven types of major sequential behaviour: mate probing, mounting, shell circling, positioning, insemination posture, sheath withdrawal and dismounting. Rejection of mating attempts by the female was frequently observed. Egg laying occurred during either day or night. A sequence of seven distinct types of behaviour were performed during oviposition: climbing, positioning, forming a temporary tube, mucous secreting, egg depositing, leaving and resting. Overall, these results provide an understanding of the egg-laying behavioural process and highlight its complexity in P.virescens. In addition, detailed ethograms of mating and egg-laying behaviour were derived. These will promote further systematic comparative studies of the reproductive behaviour of apple snails.
