METHODS: A kilogramme of keropok lekors or potato chips was fried in 2.5 L of palm or soybean oil at 180 °C for 10 minutes. The frying process was repeated once and four times to obtain twice-heated and five-times-heated oils. The peroxide value and fatty acid composition of the oils were measured.
RESULTS: Frequent heating significantly increased the peroxide values in both oils, with the five-times-heated oils having the highest peroxide values [five-times-heated palm: 14.26 ± 0.41 and 11.29 ± 0.58 meq/kg vs fresh: 2.13 ± 0.00, F (3,12) = 346.80, P < 0.001; five-times-heated soybean: 16.95 ± 0.39 and 12.90 ± 0.21 meq/kg vs fresh: 2.53 ± 0.00 oils, F (3,12) = 1755, P < 0.001, when used to fry keropok lekors and potato chips, respectively]. Overall, both oils showed significantly higher peroxide values when keropok lekors were fried in them compared with when potato chips were fried. In general, the heated soybean oil had significantly higher peroxide values than the heated palm oil. Fatty acid composition in the oils remained mostly unaltered by the heating frequency.
CONCLUSION: keropok lekors, when used as the frying material, increased the peroxide values of the palm and soybean oils. Fatty acid composition was not much affected by the frequency of frying or the fried item used.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to assess advance care planning among older people and their perception of life and health, end of life, and end-of-life care; (2) to explore older people's accessibility and receptiveness toward counseling; (3) elucidate older people's perspectives on counseling and its impact on emotional management and decision-making; (4) to assess older people's competencies in emotional management; and (5) to propose an intervention model for enhancing older people's well-being and dignity through psychological counseling in Singapore.
METHODS: A mixed method study design involving quantitative and qualitative methods will be used. Older individuals receiving some form of preventive, primary, or long-term care in the community through voluntary welfare organizations from the senior activity centers located in eastern Singapore participated in the qualitative phase. Six older individuals from each senior activity center have been enrolled for the interview phase to explore 6 components: the Advanced Care Planning (ACP) booklet, Trait Meta Mood Scale (TMMS), accessibility and receptiveness toward counseling, and emotional management and decision-making. The ACP, an instrument designed to assess advanced care planning among older individuals, and the TMMS, an instrument developed to measure meta-mood experience and emotional management, were used in the quantitative phase among 100 participants. The data will be analyzed thematically using NVivo version 12, whereas descriptive statistics and a 2-tailed, 1-sample t test will be conducted in SPSS (version 25; IBM Corp) for empirical data analyses.
RESULTS: The qualitative phase, which involves a semistructured interview, has been completed among 20 older individuals aged 66-86 years. Thematic analysis of the data is still ongoing. Meanwhile, the quantitative phase commenced on March 22, 2022, with 100 participants providing signed informed consent to participate in the study. The study is expected to be completed by March 2023.
CONCLUSIONS: The mixed methods study will document the current awareness of ACP, accessibility and receptiveness toward counseling, and the potential use of psychological counseling in enhancing well-being and dignity among older people in Singapore. The research findings will benefit policy makers in their decision-making when attempting to mitigate the potential barriers to seeking counseling assistance among older people.
INTERNATIONAL REGISTERED REPORT IDENTIFIER (IRRID): DERR1-10.2196/45557.
METHODS: A clinic based, cross sectional study using the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire was conducted in two primary care health clinics in Hulu Langat, Selangor, Malaysia over a period of 8 months. The nurses and medical assistants were involved in recruiting the patients while the family physicians conducted the interview.
RESULTS: A total 151 respondents were recruited. The mean age was 65.6 +/- 10.8 years with females constituted 119 (78.8%) of the patients. The mean duration of knee pain was 4.07 +/- 2.96 years. Half of the patients were overweight and majority, 138 (91.4%), had at least one co-morbidity, the commonest being hypertension. The physical health status showed lower score as compared to mental health component. The domain concerning mental health components showed positive correlation with age. There was a significant negative correlation between age and physical functioning (p < 0.0005) which indicated the deterioration of this domain as patients became older. Male respondents had better scores in most of the QOL dimensions especially in the physical functioning domain (p = 0.03). There was no significant association between QOL with different education levels, employment status and marital status. Patients with higher body mass index (BMI) and existence co-morbidities scored lower in most of the QOL domains.
CONCLUSIONS: This study has shown that patients with knee OA attending primary care clinics have relatively poor quality of life pertaining to the physical health components but less impact was seen on the patients' mental health.
METHODS: This is single centre cross-sectional study involved 105 traumatic head injury patients under the Neurosurgical Department Hospital Sultanah Aminah, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The primary investigator will do an interview and the patients will be asked question to complete a questioner from SF-36 (36 questions). Subsequently, consent for participation will be taken and blood sampling will be done.
RESULTS: Thirty-three patients were noted to have anterior pituitary dysfunction. The mean age was 36.97 ± 12.96 years old. Twenty-seven patients (32.5%) were male and six patients were female (27.3%). Chronic anterior pituitary dysfunction in patients with a severe traumatic head injury around 47.1% (23 patients), as compared to a moderate head injury (8 patients, 38.1%) and 2 sustained mild head injury (5.6%). The mean duration after the onset of trauma was 10.3 ± 1.79 months. All patient with anterior pituitary dysfunction had positive CT brain findings with 22 had subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) at the basal cistern and 27 patients had a base of skull fracture, where 52.1% of the patient underwent surgical intervention, 84.8% involved one axis and another 5 patients had two axes involved. Severity of the head injury (P < 0.001), prolonged duration of hospital stay (P = 0.014), radiological findings of a base of skull fracture (P < 0.001) and presence of SAH at basal cistern (P < 0.001) was significantly associated with pituitary dysfunction. The patient with anterior pituitary dysfunction has the lower 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) marks 56.3 ± 10.3.
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of hypopituitarism was 31%. Indicators are increased TBI severity, prolonged hospitalisation and positive finding in radiological assessment. Post-traumatic chronic anterior pituitary dysfunction also related with poor quality of life as showed by low SF-36 marks.
METHODS: This is a prospective instrument correlation study done on 93 children aged 1-4 years of age with speech and language delay for at least 3 months. Hearing status was confirmed using otoacoustic emissions, pure tone audiometry and brainstem evoked response (BSER). Hearing status was then compared to the 14-point questionnaire final scores and is statistically correlated.
RESULTS: There were 26 patients, 15 males (58%) and 11(42%) females who were diagnosed to have hearing loss. The average age of presentation was 2.49 and conductive hearing loss accounted for about 74% of cases of hearing loss. The mean questionnaire score obtained through our patients was 3.83±1.987. Discriminant analysis suggests that a questionnaire score of above 4 was indicative that the child was suffering from hearing loss.
CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that the low-cost bilingual (Malay and English) questionnaire can be used to detect hearing loss in the Malaysian population and could potentially be useful in rural health centres to help detect hearing loss and to determine the urgency of referral to a tertiary health centre.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive cohort study on the audiological findings detected during the first hearing assessment done on a child with craniosynostosis using otoacoustic emissions, pure tone audiometry or auditory brainstem response examination. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the type and severity of hearing loss when compared between syndromic and non-sydromic craniosynostosis, and other associated contributory factors.
RESULTS: A total of 31 patients with 62 ears consisting of 14 male patients and 17 female patients were evaluated. Twenty two patients (71%) were syndromic and 9 (29%) were non-syndromic craniosynostosis. Amongst the syndromic craniosynostosis, 9 (41%) had Apert syndrome, 7 (32%) had Crouzon syndrome, 5 (23%) had Pfieffer syndrome and 1 (4%) had Shaethre Chotzen syndrome. Patients with syndromic craniosynostosis were more likely to present with all types and severity of hearing loss, including severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss while children with non-syndromic craniosynostosis were likely to present with normal hearing (p
