    Ag/PMMA nanocomposites were successfully synthesized by in-situ technique. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show that the particles are spherical in shape and their sizes are dependent on temperature. The smallest particle achieved high stability as indicated from Zeta sizer analysis. The red shift of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) indicated the increases of particle sizes. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns exhibit a two-phase (crystalline and amorphous) structure of Ag/PMMA nanocomposites. The complexation of Ag/PMMA nanocomposites was confirmed using Raman spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra confirmed that the bonding was dominantly influenced by the PMMA and DMF solution. Finally, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicate that the total weight loss increases as the temperature increases.

    Barium strontium titanate (Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3) powder was processed at temperature 80 o C by reacting titania sol in aqueous solutions that contained BaCl2, SrCl2 and NaOH at atmospheric pressure.
    The structural characteristic of the powder and sintered pellet were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) whereas the electrical characteristic was determined via Impedance Spectroscopy (IS) and LCR meter. The synthesized powder was found to have a tetragonal phase after heating at 1300 o C. XRD pattern also showed the presence of secondary phase BaTi2O5 (BT2). The SEM results shows the fine grain size was in the range of 0.2 Pm to 0.4 Pm whereas the large ones are approximately 0.8 Pm to 1.2 Pm The ac response of sample sintered at 1300 o C indicated that three electrically different regions. Element 1 can be assigned as a ferroelectric grain boundary region and it is actually BT2, element 2 as a ferroelectric bulk region and the third element is a conductive core which has a low resistance (200 :) and capacitance value.

    Side effects such as abrasion of the dental hard tissue have been frequently observed following the extensive use of mechanical cleansing. As promising antiseptics like chlorhexidine produces extrinsic dental staining on long term usage, there has been increasing interest and research generated towards chemically based stain removing agents. This invitro studyexamined whether some commercial oral hygiene products could inhibit chlorhexidine derived stain independent of any mechanical cleansing action. Perspex blocks were soaked in triplicate in chlorhexidine solution for 2 minutesand stain inhibition by these products was determined by further soaking the blocks in productl water slurries for 2 minutes and finally in tea solution for I hourly periods. The optical density (OD) of each specimen was determined at each hourly interval by spectrophotometry at 395 nm and the mean values obtained. At the end of the study, most of the products inhibited stain compared to water control and there was a variation in the stain inhibitingefficacyof the products. It is thus concluded that oral hygiene products like dentifricesand mouthrinses can inhibit chlorhexidine derived extrinsic dental stain to a variable degree through a chemical action by contained ingredients.

    Co(II)-Ti(IV)-substituted magnetoplumbite-type (M-type) barium ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized via the sol-gel technique employing ethylene glycol as the gel precursor. Structural and magnetic properties were characterised via X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. The particle sizes of the M-type BaCoXTiXFe12-2XO19 (0.2 ≤  ≤ 1.0) were found to be 900 Å – 1500 Å. The XRD results confirmed that the Co(II)-Ti(IV) substituted ferrites in the range of 0.2 ≤  ≤ 1.0 substitution had the M-type ferrite as the dominant phase. The hysteresis loss per-cycle decreased with increasing Co(II)-Ti(IV) substitution in M-type ferrites which showed reduced values in coercivity and remnant magnetisation with moderate effect on the saturation magnetisation.

    The present investigation deals with the development of ethanol-vapour-sensing materials coated with the semiconducting oxide TiO2. Thick films of anatase TiO2 were deposited using the sol-gel dip-coating technique on alumina substrates by conventional alkoxide sol and modified sol added with Degussa P-25 as the sensing medium. It was shown that crystallised TiO2 anatase was obtained at the annealing temperature of 500oC. The fabricated TiO2 sensors exhibited highest sensitivity at the sensing temperature of 350 ºC. Sensitivity towards the ethanol vapour was further increased with UV light effect. The enhancement of the sensitivity of the modified catalytic pellet can be explained by the crystallite of anatase TiO2 and the effect of the photocatalytic of TiO2. The high sensitivity of the TiO2 film deposited with modified sol revealed that the modified sol could be a new alternative in the development of a TiO2 ethanol sensor.

    The PROSTALAC (PROSThesis Antibiotic Loaded Acrylic Cement) functional spacer is made with antibiotic-loaded acrylic cement. We use it as an interim spacer in two-stage exchange arthroplasty in cases of infected total knee or total hip replacement. PROSTALAC allows continuous rehabilitation between stages as it maintains good alignment and stability of the joint with a reasonable range of movement. It also helps to maintain the soft-tissue planes, thereby facilitating the second-stage procedure. We report here early outcomes of the use of PROSTALAC in 5 patients - 3 in total knee replacements, 1 in a total hip replacement and 1 in a bipolar hemiarthroplasty.

    Nylon denture base material could be a useful alternative to poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in special circumstances such as patient allergy to the monomer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the flexural properties of a nylon denture base material (Lucitone FRS), a conventional compression-moulded heat-polymerized (Meliodent), a compression-moulded microwave-polymerized (Acron MC) and an injection-moulded microwave-polymerized (Lucitone 199) PMMA polymers. The effect of aldehyde-free, oxygen releasing disinfectant solution (Perform) on these properties was also investigated. The flexural modulus and the flexural strength were assessed with a three-point bending test. Specimens were stored in water at a temperature of 37 degrees C for 30 days. For each material, half of the prepared specimens were randomly selected and immersed in the disinfectant 24 h prior to testing. Results were compared statistically at a confidence level of 95%. The result showed that in both the control and disinfected groups, the flexural modulus of nylon was significantly lower than the three PMMA polymers. The flexural strength of nylon was significantly lower than those of Meliodent and Acron MC but was comparable with Lucitone 199. A 24-h immersion in the disinfecting solution increased the rigidity of nylon denture base material.

    The development of wearable artificial kidney demands an efficient dialysate recovery, which relies upon the adsorption process. This study proposes a solution to solve the problem of competitive adsorption between the uremic toxins by employing two adsorptive components in a membrane separation process. Dual-layer hollow fiber (DLHF) membranes, which are composed of a polysulfone (PSf)/activated carbon (AC) inner layer and a PSf/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) outer layer, were prepared for co-adsorptive removal of creatinine and urea from aqueous solution. The DLHF membranes were characterized in terms of morphological, physicochemical, water transport, and creatinine adsorption properties. The membrane was then subjected to an ultrafiltration adsorption study for performance evaluation. The incorporation of AC in membrane, as confirmed by microscopic and surface analyses, has improved the pure water flux up to 25.2 L/(m2 h). A membrane with optimum AC loading (9 wt %) demonstrated the highest maximum creatinine adsorption capacity (86.2 mg/g) based on the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. In the ultrafiltration adsorption experiment, the membrane removed creatinine and urea with a combined average percent removal of 29.3%. Moreover, the membrane exhibited creatinine and urea uptake recoveries of 98.8 and 81.2%, respectively. The combined action of PMMA and AC in the PSf DLHF membrane has made the adsorption of multiple uremic toxins possible during dialysate recovery.

    The impact strength of a newly developed experimental polyurethane-based polymer which is derived from palm oil (Experimental PU) was compared with denture polymers; heat-cured and self cured polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and ® Eclipse , light-activated urethane dimethacrylate prosthetic resin system. Ten specimens were ® prepared using heat-cured PMMA (Meliodent Heat Cure, Heraeus Kulzer, Germany), self cured PMMA ® (Meliodent Rapid Repair, Heraeus Kulzer, ® Germany), Eclipse baseplate resin (Dentsply, USA) and Experimental PU material. Specimens were prepared following manu- facturer’s instructions except for the Experimental PU material where it was prepared in bulk and sectioned to the desired dimension, 64 x 6 x 4 mm. A ‘V’ notch of approximately 0.8mm in depth was machine cut across the 6mm width. Prior to the Charpy type impact test, specimens were soaked in a water bath for 50 hours at 37ºC. ® Eclipse baseplate resin showed the highest 2 impact strength (2.73 kJ/m ±0.54) followed by ® 2 Meliodent Rapid Repair (2.50kJ/m ±0.65), ® 2 Meliodent Heat Cure (1.96kJ/m ±0.42) and 2 Experimental PU (1.04kJ/m ±0.29).     BACKGROUND: The study's objective is to assess the adherence of C. albicans in different types of denture polymers and the effectiveness of eugenol and commercialized denture cleansers in the removal of C. albicans. Three types of denture base polymers (Lucitone® 199 (High-Impact PMMA), Impact® (conventional PMMA) and Eclipse® (UDMA)) and two hard denture reline materials (Kooliner® and Tokuyama® Rebase II Fast) were used in this study.

    METHODS: Three hundred samples were prepared (6 × 2 mm disc shape) and divided into five groups of denture polymers (n = 60) and further subjected into five treatment groups (Polident®, Steradent, distilled water, eugenol 5-minutes, and eugenol 10-min). Three samples were extracted from each treatment group for baseline data (n = 12). Baseline data were used to calculate the initial number of C. albicans adherence. A 0.5 ml immersion solution from each specimen was cultured on YPD agar and incubated for 48 h at 37 °C. Visible colonies were counted using a colony counter machine (ROCKER Galaxy 230).

    RESULTS: The result showed that the denture base polymer significantly affected the initial adherence (p = 0.007). The removal of C. albicans was also considerably affected by the denture base polymers and denture cleansers (p

    Hybrid organic-inorganic membranes were fabricated using sol-gel technique using PMMA and TEOS with 80/20 (w/w) ratio at various solvents. The thin membrane films were then characterized using DSC and TGA. From DSC analysis, the Tg value of the PMMA moieties in hybrids membranes was in the order H-15-Toluene < Pure PMMA < H-15-THF < H-15-DMF. Furthermore, from TGA analysis it was found that the hybrid membranes have higher thermal stability compared to pure PMMA, and the type of solvents used play an important role in their degradation behavior.
