    PURPOSE: The current study investigated the effect of different luting agents on the fracture resistance of Procera AllCeram copings.

    METHODS: Six master dies were duplicated from the prepared maxillary first premolar tooth using nonprecious metal alloy (Wiron 99). Thirty copings (Procera AllCeram) of 0.6-mm thickness were manufactured. Three types of luting media were used: zinc phosphate cement (Elite), glass ionomer cement (Fuji I), and dual-cured composite resin cement (Panavia F). Ten copings were cemented with each type. Two master dies were used for each group, and each of them was used to lute five copings. All groups were cemented according to manufacturer's instructions and received a static load of 5 kg during cementation. After 24 hours of distilled water storage at 37 degrees C, the copings were vertically compressed using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min.

    RESULTS: ANOVA revealed significant differences in the load at fracture among the three groups (p < 0.001). The fracture strength results showed that the mean fracture strength of zinc phosphate cement (Elite), glass ionomer cement (Fuji I), and resin luting cement (Panavia F) were 1091.9 N, 784.8 N, and 1953.5 N, respectively.

    CONCLUSION: Different luting agents have an influence on the fracture resistance of Procera AllCeram copings.

    Objectives: The objectives of the study were to assess: i) the staining susceptibility of composite resins, ii) the ability of whitening toothpastes in removing stains from composite resins.
    Materials and Methods: Thirty specimens from each composite resins: Filtek Z350 (3M ESPE), Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE) and Beautifil (Shofu Inc.) were fabricated. After polishing, specimens were immersed in coffee for 3 days. Specimens were then brushed twice a day for 2 weeks using Colgate Total (Colgate-Palmolive, control group), Colgate Advanced Whitening (Colgate- Palmolive, test group) and Darlie All Shiny White (Hawley & Hazel Chemical Co., test group). Colour changes (?E*) were measured using Spectrophotometer at baseline, after coffee immersion and after brushing. Results were statistically analyzed using one way ANOVA and Tukey’s test.
    Results: There was significant difference in terms of colour changes for Filtek Z350, Filtek Z250 and Beautifil after coffee immersion (P0.05).
    Conclusions: Filtek Z350 was able to resist staining by coffee better than Filtek Z250 and Beautifil. The whitening toothpastes did not offer added advantage in terms of ability to remove stains compared to ordinary toothpaste.

    Direct composite veneers can be used to mask tooth discolorations and/or to correct unaesthetic tooth forms and/or positions. However, these type of restorations are often regarded as one of the most challenging in aesthetic dentistry presumably due to the extent of natural tooth structure that must be recreated. This paper discusses easy application techniques and tips for Ceram.X Duo™, a nano ceramic composite restorative material. Its natural shading system allows the restoration of tooth with both dentine and enamel shade and transforms it into a final direct veneer restoration that mimics a natural tooth.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the light intensity of selected light curing units with varying distance and angulation of the light curing tip and lightmeter. Materials and method: Four types of light units; Spectrum 800 (Dentsply), Coltulux 3 (Coltene), Elipar FreeLight 2 (3M Espe) and Starlight Pro (Mectron) were evaluated for light intensity at various distances between the light curing tip and the radiometer Cure Rite Denstply (0,1,3,5,10 and 15 mm). The light curing units were tested at right angles to the aperture of the light meter and at the angles of 45°, 60° to it at a standardized 5 mm distance. Results: The highest light intensity was obtained when the tip of light curing unit was in contact with the lightmeter aperture. The light intensity decreased significantly when the light tip was placed 5mm, 10mm and 15mm away from the lightmeter aperture. However, no significant differences (p> .05) were detected between Omm, Imm and 3mm. There was a decrease in light intensity when light~·tip was angulated at 45° and 60° except for Coltolux 3. Conclusions: The intensity of the curing light was affected by the distance between the light curing tip and the lightmeter. However, the decrease in light intensity of the light curing unit was found not to obey the inverse square law for the distances 0 to 15 mm. The study found that there was no significant difference between 45° and 60° angulation between the light curing tip and the lightmeter. However, the decrease in light intensity was significant when compared to the light tip placed perpendicular (90°) to the aperture of the light meter.

    Certain beverages e.g. coffee, tea, soft drinks, fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, may affect the physical properties of composite resins. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate the effect of different beverages and chilli sauce on the wear resistance of composite resins, (2) evaluate effect of the duration of immersion in the beverages and chilli sauce on the wear resistance of composite resins.

    Materials and methods: Disc specimens were fabricated using two different types of composite resins: (i) Filtek Z350 (3M ESPE, USA, nano-filled composite, 40 specimens) and (ii) Solare P (GC Dental Products Corp, Japan, microhybrid composite, 40 specimens). After polymerization, all the specimens were polished using Enhance Polishing System (Dentsply International Inc.,USA). The specimens were air-dried before weighing using Sartorius BP 221S weighing balance (Sartorius AG, Goettingen, Germany). Ten specimens from each type of composite were immersed in distilled water (control group), Coca cola®, orange juice (Peel Fresh®) and chilli sauce (Maggi®) respectively. The duration of immersion was 6 hours and 1 week. A reciprocal compression-sliding system was used to evaluate the wear resistance of the specimens. The specimens were moved back and forth with a loaded counter-body (235g) against sand paper (P1000, 3M ESPE, USA) in running water. The weight of the specimens were measured after 6 hours of immersion and 20,000 wear cycles and also at 1 week of immersion with further 20,000 wear cycles. The wear resistances were tabulated as percentage of weight loss from the specimens. Results were statistically analyzed using one way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey’s test (p= 0.05).
    Results: The results showed that Solare P has significantly lower wear resistance compared to Filtek Z350. There was no significant difference in wear resistance for Filtek Z350 when immersed in chili sauce, Coca-cola® and orange juice in comparison with control group for 6 hours and 1 week. Similar findings were observed for Solare P.

    Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that Solare P has poorer wear resistance than Filtek Z350. The soaking medium investigated and duration of immersion have no influence on the wear resistance of Solare P and Filtek Z350.

    Analisis spektrum gelombang permukaan (SASW) adalah kaedah seismos yang menggunakan ciri serakan gelombang Rayleigh yang merambat pada lapisan bahan bagi memperolehi profil halaju gelombang ricih. Kaedah SASW merupakan satu kaedah insitu tanpa musnah untuk pencirian tapak geoteknik yang lebih kos efektif berbanding kaedah konvensyenal secara penggerudian. Dalam kajian ini sebanyak 20 stesen yang terdiri daripada 13 tapak kajian telah dipilih. Perisian (WINSASW 2.0) telah digunakan dalam proses penyongsangan untuk menghasilkan profil halaju gelombang ricih melawan kedalaman. Profil-profil ini kemudian dianalisis secara berasingan bagi memperolehi beberapa parameter geologi kejuruteraan jasad batuan seperti kekukuhan, nilai Penanda Mutu Batuan (RQD), anisotropi dan sifat kebolehkorekan. Analisis data SASW dijalankan dengan menganggap bahawa jasad batuan adalah homogen dan isotrop serta mengandungi pelbagai intensiti ketakselanjaran yang mempengaruhi perambatan halaju gelombang permukaan. Pengukuran sifat kedinamikan tanah dijalankan dengan menggunakan halaju gelombang ricih dan nilai ketukan N daripada Ujian Penusukan Piawai (NSPT) dalam lubang gerudi. Satu persamaan linear baharu, Vs = 4.44 NSPT + 213.84 yang mengaitkan halaju gelombang ricih dan NSPT telah diperolehi. Satu persamaan empirik telah dikemukakan bagi mengukur nilai Penanda Mutu Batuan (RQD) berasaskan halaju gelombang ricih yang diperolehi daripada kaedah SASW dan halaju daripada ujian ultrasonik. Persamaan ini memberikan hasil yang perbezaannya kurang daripada 10% berbanding data RQD daripada lubang gerudi. Analisis keanisotropan jasad batuan dijalankan menggunakan halaju gelombang ricih yang diperolehi berdasarkan kaedah SASW yang diukur dalam empat arah. Plot nisbah halaju gelombang ricih - halaju ultrasonik melawan halaju ultrasonik telah digunakan untuk menentukan sifat kebolehkorekan jasad batuan. Sebanyak lima kelas lengkungan kebolehkorekan jasad batuan telah dapat dikemukakan iaitu lengkungan Mudah korek, Mudah koyak, Susah koyak, Pemecah hidraulik dan Peletupan.

    Methanol extract of Melastoma malabathricum leaves inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and six clinical isolates of Methicilin Resistant Stapyhlococcus aureus (MRSA 1-6). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of test substance was 1.565mg/ml and the minimum bacteriocidal concentration (MBC) was 3.125 mg/ml. The methanol extract suppressed RNA synthesis at 10 mg/ml as shown by RNA profile which was devoid of three bands compared to the control. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis using seven primer pairs was only successful in amplifying four cDNA amplicons. The failure to amplify three cDNA amplicons for three primer pairs corresponding to gyrA, femA and nuc genes, implied the possibility of suppression of the corresponding mRNA. Electrophoretic separation of endogenous and exogenuos bacterial proteins showed that three and five protein, respectively were not expressed. One endogenous and three exogenous proteins were over-expressed in treated MRSA compared with untreated control. The results of the molecular and proteomic analyses are in agreement, and based on primers being used, methanol extract of M. malabathricum leaves possibly inhibits MRSA growth through inhibition of DNA synthesis, peptidoglycan production, and nuclease production.

    Kajian ini dijalankan untuk melihat variasi taburan 210Po dan 210Pb melalui profil menegak aktivitinya, serta nisbah aktiviti 210Po/210Pb di dalam teras sedimen yang diambil di beberapa stesen persampelan pesisir pantai perairan Sarawak. Didapati profil taburan radionuklid tersebut dalam teras sedimen adalah berubah-ubah mengikut lokasi persampelan dan telah dibuktikan melalui analisis ANOVA yang menunjukkan bahawa terdapat perbezaan bererti pada 95% aras keyakinan bagi aktiviti 210Po (p = 0.000), 210Pb (p = 0.035) dan 210Po/210Pb (p = 0.000) di semua lokasi kajian. Secara umumnya, aktiviti 210Po dan 210Pb yang diukur masing-masing dalam julat 337 ke 2460 Bq/kg, 11 ke 84 Bq/kg di SR 01; 224 ke 2008 Bq/kg, 6 ke 80 Bq/kg di SR 02; 119 ke 1595 Bq/kg, 6 ke 84 Bq/kg di SR 03; 241 ke 2294 Bq/kg, 5 ke 82 Bq/kg di SR 04 dan 175 ke 1340 Bq/kg, 4 ke 44 Bq/kg di SR 05. Merujuk kepada julat tersebut, didapati aktiviti 210Po adalah lebih tinggi daripada aktiviti 210Pb dengan purata nisbah 210Po/210Pb di semua stesen adalah melebihi satu, iaitu dalam julat 20 ke 35. Variasi profil taburan radionuklid tersebut dipercayai dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor sekitaran dan telah dibuktikan terdapat korelasi yang kuat di antara taburan radionuklid dengan komposisi sedimen jenis kelodak (210Po:r = 0.701 dan 210Pb: r = 0.648), kedalaman air (210Po: r = -0.647) dan jarak stesen dari daratan (210Po: r = 0.746 dan 210Pb: r = 0.975). Oleh itu, dapat disimpulkan bahawa faktor-faktor tersebut merupakan penyumbang utama ke atas perubahan yang berlaku kepada taburan 210Po dan 210Pb.

    Purpose of the study: The objective of this study was to investigate the flexural strengths of five commercially available tooth-coloured restorative materials – Alpha-Dent (composite resin, Dental Technologies Inc.), Solare Anterior (composite resin, GC), F2000 (polyacid-modified composite resin, 3M), Beautifil (giomer, Shofu) and Fuji II LC (resin- modified glass ionomer cement, GC] using the ISO 4049 specifications. Materials and Method: Ten specimens of (25±0.2)mm x (2±0.1)mm x (2±0.1)mm from each material were prepared at 22-23ºC using a customized metal mould. After light polymerization, the specimens were stored in distilled water at 37ºC for 24 hours. The specimens were subsequently blotted dry, measured and subjected to flexural testing using an Instron Universal Testing Machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The flexural strengths were calculated from the maximum load exerted on the specimens. Data were analysed using one way ANOVA and scheffe’s post-hoc multiple comparison tests at a significance level of 0.05.Results: The results showed that the mean flexural strengths of Beautifil, Solare Anterior and Alpha-Dent were above 80 MPa and those of F2000 and Fuji II LC were below 80 MPa.     During post crown restoration, the preparation of the post canal can be fraught with difficulties resulting in widening, gouging and transportation of the post canal; sometimes with near root perforation. A technique is described to repair such iatrogenically damaged internal root canal walls using reinforcing resin composite and optic glass fibre posts. The root dentine, resin composite and glass fibres, having similar moduli of elasticity, will result in a repaired root with a ‘monolithic’ structure and possessing numerous desirable characteristics. This repair technique can easily be carried out in one sitting at the chairside thereby allowing the continued serviceability of the iatrogenically compromised root-filled tooth.

    Desensitization of teeth after cavity preparation has been recommended in an attempt to avoid post-operative sensitivity. However, there is concern regarding application effect of desensitizing agent on shear bond strength of the adhesive system used. The purpose of our study was to compare the shear bond strength of adhesive system in two different dentin surface treatments, with and without desensitizing agent. Sixteen extracted human premolars were sectioned off at the coronal portion to expose the flat dentin surfaces. The surfaces were finished using 600 Grit Wet Silicon Carbide abrasive papers. The premolars were randomly assigned to two groups: control and treated with MS Coat desensitizing agent. The desensitizer was applied according to manufacturer’s instruction. Resin composite was bonded to each dentin surface using Prime & Bond ® adhesive system. The composite resin was debonded by shear stress. Mann-Whitney Test was used in statistical analysis. Our result showed that application of MS Coat desensitizing agent on dentin surface had significantly reduced the shear bond strength of the adhesive system used (z = - 0.14, p < 0.05). Thus, we conclude that shear bond strength of Prime & Bond ® NT (Dentsply, USA) adhesive system will be reduced if dentin surface is treated with MS Coat (Sun Medical, Japan) desensitizing agent.

    The aim of the study was to evaluate post-polymerization of resin composite by measuring NanoHardness (H), Young’s Modulus (E) and Degree of Conversion (DC) using nanoindentation and Micro-Raman spectroscopy. For this purpose a computer-controlled NanoIndenter™ and a Renishaw 1000 Raman Spectrometer fitted with an Olympus microscope attachment, operated at 638 nm, were used. A light-activated resin composite was used in this study, (Z250, 3MESPE). Sub-groups (n=3) of specimens were irradiated for 20, 30, 40 s. All samples for nanoindentation were polished metallographically and typically 50 nanoindentations were performed per specimen. After curing and polishing, half of the samples were tested immediately (Group 1); the others after being stored dry at 37 °C for 7 days (Group 2) to allow scope for postpolymerization. H values ranged from 1.08 to 1.40 GPa for Group 1, and from 1.64 to1.71 GPa for Group 2. E values in Group 1 ranged from 19.60 to 19.94 GPa and for Group 2, from 21.42 to 22.05 GPa.     The aim of the present study was to assess the current approaches and philosophies pertaining to direct restorations, bleaching and root canal treatment amongst general dental practitioners (GDPs) in the Klang Valley, Malaysia. A questionnaire, together with a stamped addressed envelope and an explanatory letter, was sent to 200 GDPs in the Klang Valley in April-July 2005. The GDPs were selected at random. A total of 153 (76.5%) of the GDPs responded to the survey. 46.4% of the respondents stated that the use of amalgam was decreasing whereas 79.7% stated an increase in the use of composite resins. Clinical indication (85.6%) and patients’ demand for aesthetics (73.9%) appeared to be the main factors influencing the choice of restorative materials. Fractured restorations was the main reason for the replacement of amalgam restorations (77.1%) whilst secondary caries was the main reason for the replacement of composite resin restorations (73.9%). Almost two thirds of the GDPs surveyed provided chair side bleaching while 75.8% of the GDPs would supervise home bleaching. Sodium hypochlorite was the most common endodontic irrigant used amongst the GDPs surveyed and cold lateral compaction was the most commonly used obturation technique.

    The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the effect of times elapsed on the application of a single-step adhesive system and activation of light cured subsequently placed composite to the bond strength between composites and adhesives. This was an experimental study using fifteen teeth extracted human premolars, which were caries and pathology free. Sample of teeth were embedded up to cemento-enamel junction on box of acrylic resin. All teeth were cut to obtain flat occlusal dentin surfaces. The specimens were randomly selected and divided into three groups with five teeth each. All the teeth were assigned to single-step bonding system AQ Bond (Sun Medical Co. Ltd., Shiga, Japan) according to manufacturer’s direction. Group 1 was left for 45 seconds, group 2 for 2 minutes, while group 3 was 5 minutes before putting subsequently restorative material. Composite resin was applied in 3 mm diameter and 6 mm height of cylinder mold and cured according to manufacturer’s direction on the dentin surface. Shear bond strength were measured using a testing system (Instron 8874, Instron Corp., Canton, MA, USA) at a crosshead speed of 2 mm/min with cell load capacity of 25 KN. The bond-strengths between single step adhesive system (AQ Bond) and light cured composites were tested.     The water decoction of Labisia pumila var. alata is used traditionally in childbirth, as well as for the treatment of flatulence, dysentery, dysmenorrhoea and join pains. This study was carried out to determine the best method and optimum parameters of aqueous axtraction of the leaves and roots of this species. The laboratory methos esed were maceration, ddecoction, reflux and Saxhlet, whereas the parameters studied were temperature, duration and pH of axtraction. The yields and thin layer chromatographic profiles of the freeze-dried extracts were analysed. The study showed that in general the percentage yields of the water soluble extracts were higher for the roots than the leaves, as well as the extracts obtained from heating than those obtained at room temperature. The most effective extraction parameters for L. pumila var. alata were as follows:maceration (25 C, at least 6 hr), decoction (60 C, not exceeding 10 min) and reflux (100 C, not exceeding 4 hr). Saxhlet method was found to be the least effective. The pH analysis had shown the possibility of degradation of some of the phytochemicals at extreme pH values of 1,2 and 14.

    The aim of the study was to determine the depth of cure of a new nanocomposite when exposed to different curing times and also when different shades were polymerized. The nanocomposite, Filtek Supreme (3M ESPE), was packed into 96 plastic cylindrical moulds measuring 4 mm in internal diameter and 8 mm in length and then polymerized using a conventional quartz-tungsten-halogen light curing unit. The first part of the study involved curing 16 samples each of A2 shade of the nanocomposite at exposure times of 20s, 40s, 60s and 120s. For the second part, a similar number of samples of the dentinal opacity shades of A2, B3 and A4 of the nanocomposite were polymerized at a constant exposure time of 40s. The depth of polymerization of the nanocomposite in each sample was measured using a digimatic indicator. Curing depths were found to increase significantly (P < 0.05) with longer exposure time (20s < 40s < 60s < 120s) and decrease significantly with darker shades (A2 > B3 > A4).
