A high recombination rate and low charge collection are the main limiting factors of copper oxides (cupric and cuprous oxide) for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. In this paper, a high performance copper oxide photocatalyst was developed by integrating cupric oxide (CuO) and cuprous oxide (Cu2O) thin films, which showed superior performance for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) compared to the control CuO and Cu2O photocatalyst. Our results show that a heterojunction photocatalyst of CuO-Cu2O thin films could significantly increase the charge collection, reduce the recombination rate, and improve the photocatalytic activity.

A simple, rapid, specific and reliable high-performance liquid chromatographic assay of meloxicam in human plasma has been developed using a C18 reversed-phase analytical column. Reversed-phase chromatography was conducted using a mobile phase of 0.02 potassium dihydrogen phosphate (adjusted to pH 2.7 with phosphoric acid)-acetonitrile-triethylamine (35:65:0.05, v/v) with UV detection at 354 nm. The drug in human plasma was deproteinized using a combination of methanol and chloroform. This method is simple, rapid and consistent with a high recovery of meloxicam in human plasma ranging from 93.29 to 111.09%. Regression analysis for the calibration plot for plasma standards obtained for the drug concentrations between (25-4000) ng/mL indicated excellent linearity (r ≥ 0.9997). The proposed method was applied to study the bioequivalence between Mobic (original) and Melocam (generic) products. The study was conducted on using two tablets (4 × 7.5 mg) of each of the commercial product and the reference standard in a two-way open randomized crossover design involving 20 volunteers. Area under the concentration-time curve, peak concentration (C(max)) and time to reach C(max) were 72,868.61 ng h/mL, 2133.93 ng/mL and 4.06 h for Mobic, and 78,352.52 ng h/mL, 2525.18 ng/mL and 3.61 h for Melocam. Two C(max) were discovered in the pharmacokinetic profiles which confirm enterohepatic recirculation.

Three series of 4-hydroxy-N'-[benzylidene/1-phenylethylidene]-2-H/methyl/benzyl-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carbohydrazide 1,1-dioxides (9-11)a-l were synthesized and unraveled to be highly potent dual inhibitors of monoamine oxidases (MAO-A and MAO-B). All the examined compounds demonstrated IC50 values in lower micro-molar range for both MAO-A as well as MAO-B. The most active MAO-A inhibitor was 4-hydroxy-N'-(1-phenylethylidene)-2H-benzo[e][1,2]thiazine-3-carbohydrazide 1,1-dioxide (9i) with an IC50 value of 0.11 ± 0.005 μM, whereas, methyl 4-hydroxy-2H-benzo[e][1,2]thiazine-3-carboxylate 1,1-dioxide (3) was the most active MAO-B inhibitor with an IC50 value of 0.21 ± 0.01 μM. Enzyme kinetics studies revealed that the most potent compounds inhibited both MAO enzymes (A & B) in a competitive fashion. Molecular docking studies were also performed to obtain an intuitive picture of inhibition potential for potent inhibitors. The high potency of these compounds is optimally combined with highly favorable ADME profile with predicted good oral bioavailability.

Sarcocystosis in meat-producing animals is a major cause of reduced productivity in many countries, especially those that rely on agriculture. Although several diagnostic methods are available to detect sarcocystosis, many are too time-consuming for routine use in abattoirs and meat inspection centers, where large numbers of samples need to be tested. This study aimed to compare the sensitivity of the methylene blue tissue preparation, unstained tissue preparation and nested PCR in the detection of sarcocysts in tissue samples. Approximately three-fold more sarcocysts were detected in methylene blue-stained tissue compared to unstained controls (McNemar's test: P<0.01). Test sensitivity was comparable to that of the gold standard for sarcocyst detection, nested polymerase chain reaction. These results suggest that methylene blue can be used in tissue compression as a rapid, safe, and inexpensive technique for the detection of ruminant sarcocystosis in abattoirs.

This study determines the levels of surfactants at 12 stations located in the Melaka River Estuary. This river estuary is located within a tourism area of Melaka Historical City. The concentrations of anionic and cationic surfactants in the sea surface microlayer (SML) and sub-surface water (SSW) were determined by using two colorimetric methods, methylene blue active substances (MBASs) and disulphine blue active substances (DBASs), respectively. The results showed that cationic surfactants as DBAS (ranging between 0.19 and 0.25 μmol L-1) dominated the concentrations of surfactants in SML. The enrichment factor (Ef) between MBAS and DBAS in the SML and SSW ranged between 1.0 and 2.0, and 1.0 to 1.4, respectively. There was no significant correlation (p > 0.05) between MBAS and DBAS for both SML and SSW. Nevertheless, there were strong correlations (p

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disorder and has affected a large number of people worldwide. Insufficient insulin production causes an increase in blood glucose level that results in DM. To lower the blood glucose level, various drugs are employed that block the activity of the α-glucosidase enzyme, which is considered responsible for the breakdown of polysaccharides into monosaccharides leading to an increase in the intestinal blood glucose level. We have synthesized novel 2-(3-(benzoyl/4-bromobenzoyl)-4-hydroxy-1,1-dioxido-2H-benzo[e][1,2]thiazin-2-yl)-N-arylacetamides and have screened them for their in silico and in vitro α-glucosidase inhibition activity. The derivatives 11c, 12a, 12d, 12e, and 12g emerged as potent inhibitors of the α-glucosidase enzyme. These compounds exhibited good docking scores and excellent binding interactions with the selected residues (Asp203, Asp542, Asp327, His600, Arg526) during in silico screening. Similarly, these compounds also showed good in vitro α-glucosidase inhibitions with IC50 values of 30.65, 18.25, 20.76, 35.14, and 24.24 μM, respectively, which were better than the standard drug, acarbose (IC50 = 58.8 μM). Furthermore, a good agreement was observed between in silico and in vitro modes of study.

Titanium dioxide particles were successfully prepared using microemulsion-mediated hydrothermal processing route, with sucrose ester as a stabilising agent. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the particles possessed anatase crystal phase. Scanning electron micrographs showed micron-sized spherical particles with rough and smooth surfaces, which eventually interconnected with one another. The formation mechanism of the titanium dioxide microstructures was postulated. The as-prepared particles were subjected to photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, which exhibited higher photocatalytic activity compared to their commercial counterpart.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized via low-temperature sucrose ester micelle-mediated hydrothermal processing route using titanium isopropoxide as the precursor. X-ray diffractometer revealed that the samples possessed a mixed crystalline phases consisting of anatase and brookite in which anatase was the main phase. Upon increasing the hydrothermal reaction temperature, the degree of crystallinity of the nanoparticles improved and their morphology transformed from bundles of needles to rods and to spheres. Photocatalytic behaviour of the as-synthesized nanoparticles was investigated by photodegradation of methylene blue solution in an ultraviolet A irradiating photoreactor. The as-synthesized nanoparticles exhibited higher photocatalytic performance as compared to the commercial counterpart.

Effects of ketamine and lidocaine on electroencephalographic (EEG) changes were evaluated in minimally anaesthetized dogs, subjected to electric stimulus. Six dogs were subjected to six treatments in a crossover design with a washout period of one week. Dogs were subjected to intravenous boluses of lidocaine 2 mg/kg, ketamine 3 mg/kg, meloxicam 0.2 mg/kg, morphine 0.2 mg/kg and loading doses of lidocaine 2 mg/kg followed by continuous rate infusion (CRI) of 50 and 100 mcg/kg/min, and ketamine 3 mg/kg followed by CRI of 10 and 50 mcg/kg/min. Electroencephalogram was recorded during electrical stimulation prior to any drug treatment (before treatment) and during electrical stimulation following treatment with the drugs (after treatment) under anaesthesia. Anaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with halothane at a stable concentration between 0.85 and 0.95%. Pretreatment median frequency was evidently increased (P < 0.05) for all treatment groups. Lidocaine, ketamine, and morphine depressed the median frequency resulting from the posttreatment stimulation. The depression of median frequency suggested evident antinociceptive effects of these treatments in dogs. It is therefore concluded that lidocaine and ketamine can be used in the analgesic protocol for the postoperative pain management in dogs.

In this study, simultaneous adsorption of cationic dyes was investigated by using binary component solutions. Thiourea-modified poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) (TMPAA) polymer was used as an adsorbent for uptake of cationic dyes (malachite green, MG and methylene blue, MB) from aqueous solution in a binary system. Adsorption tests revealed that TMPAA presented high adsorption of MG and MB at higher pH and higher dye concentrations. It suggested that there are strong electrostatic attractions between the surface functional groups of the adsorbent and cationic dyes. The equilibrium analyses explain that both extended Langmuir and extended models are suitable for the description of adsorption data in the binary system. An antagonistic effect was found, probably due to triangular (MG) and linear (MB) molecular structures that mutually hinder the adsorption of both dyes on TMPAA. Besides, the kinetic studies for sorption of MG and MB dyes onto adsorbent were better represented by a pseudo-second-order model, which demonstrates chemisorption between the polymeric TMPAA adsorbent and dye molecules. According to experimental findings, TMPAA is an attractive adsorbent for treatment of wastewater containing multiple cationic dyes.

In this study, nano- and microsized zinc oxide (ZnO) materials were doped with different manganese (Mn) contents (1-5 mol%) via a simple sol-gel method. The structural, morphological, optical and chemical environments of the materials were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XRD results revealed that all synthesised materials were pure and single phased with a hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO. However, at a low annealing temperature, a nanorod-like shape can be obtained for all Zn(1-x)MnxO materials. In addition, EDX spectra confirmed the presence of Mn in the ZnO lattice and the atomic percentage was nearly equal to the calculated stoichiometry. UV-vis spectroscopy further revealed that materials in nano size exhibited band gap widening with an increase of the Mn content in the ZnO lattice. In contrast, micron state materials exhibited band gap narrowing with increasing Mn content up to 3% and then begin to widen when Mn > 3%. This is because the band gaps of these materials are affected by the dimensions of the crystals and the Mn content in the materials. Furthermore, XPS results revealed the existence of multiple states of Mn in all synthesised materials. By combining the information obtained from UV-vis and the XPS valence band, shifting in the valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) was observed. Based on XPS results, the calculation of density functional theory studies revealed that the presence of Mn2+, Mn3+, and Mn4+ ions in the materials influences the band gap changes. It was also revealed that the nanosized Zn0.99Mn0.01O exhibited a higher photocatalytic activity than the other samples for degrading methylene blue (MB) dyes, owing to its smallest crystallite size.

In this research work, we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of two new series of 1-benzyl-4-(benzylidenehydrazono)-3,4-dihydro-1H-benzo[c] [1,2]thiazine 2,2-dioxides and 1-benzyl-4-((1-phenylethylidene)hydrazono)-3,4-dihydro-1H-benzo[c][1,2]thiazine 2,2-dioxides. The synthetic plan involves the mesylation of methyl anthranilate with subsequent N-benzylation of the product. The methyl 2-(N-benzylmethylsulfonamido)benzoate was subjected to cyclization reaction in the presence of sodium hydride to obtain 1-benzyl-1H-benzo[c][1,2]thiazin-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide which was treated with hydrazine hydrate to get corresponding hydrazone precursor. Finally, the titled compounds were obtained by reaction of hydrazone with various substituted aldehydes and ketones. The synthesized derivatives were subjected to carry out their inhibition activities against monoamine oxidases along with modelling investigations to evaluate their binding interactions and dynamic stability during the docking studies. The inhibition profile of potent compounds was found as competitive for both the isozymes. The compounds were more selective inhibitors of MAO-A as compared to MAO-B. Moreover, drug likeness profile of the derivatives was evaluated to have an additional insight into the physicochemical properties. The molecular dynamic simulations predicted the behaviour of amino acids with the active site residues.

We report the synthesis and biological evaluation of two new series of 2-amino-6-benzyl-4-phenyl-4,6-dihydrobenzo[c]pyrano[2,3-e][1,2]thiazine-3‑carbonitrile 5,5-dioxides and 2-amino-6-methyl-4-phenyl-4,6-dihydrobenzo[c]pyrano[2,3-e][1,2]thiazine-3‑carbonitrile 5,5-dioxides. The synthetic methodology involves a multistep reaction starting with methyl anthranilate which was coupled with methane sulfonyl chloride. The product of the reaction was subjected to N-benzylation and N-methylation reactions followed by ring closure with sodium hydride resulting in the formation of respective 2,1-benzothiazine 2,2-dioxides. These 2,1-benzothiazine precursors were subjected to multicomponent reaction with malononitrile and substituted benzaldehydes for the synthesis of two new series of pyranobenzothiazines (6a-r and 7a-r). The synthesized compounds were screened as selective inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A and monoamine oxidase B. The in vitro results suggested that compound 6d and 7q are the selective inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A, however, the selective and potent inhibitors of monoamine oxidase B included compounds 6h and 7r. Moreover, some dual inhibitors were noticed like 7l having more inhibitory activity towards both the isozymes. Moreover, the binding modes of the selective and potent inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A and B were investigated by molecular docking analysis. The results suggested that the synthetic derivatives may be potential towards the monoamine oxidase isozymes.

In this work, new selective and sensitive dual-template molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (MIPs) were synthesized and characterized. Sorbent MIPs were investigated for simultaneous extraction and clean-up of thiamethoxam and thiacloprid from light and dark honey samples. In this study, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry triple-quadrupole (UHPLC-MS/MS) (QQQ) was used to detect and quantify the pesticides. The kinetic model with adsorption kinetics of sorbent was investigated. The optimal adsorption conditions were 80 mg of polymer MIPs, a 30-min extraction time, and a pH of 7. The detection limit (LOD) and the quantification limit (LOQ) varied from 0.045 to 0.070 µg kg-1 and from 0.07 to 0.10 µg kg-1, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precision (RSD, %) ranged from 1.3 to 2.0% and from 8.2 to 12.0%, respectively. The recovery of thiamethoxam and thiacloprid ranged from 96.8 to 106.5% and 95.3 to 104.4%, respectively, in light and dark honey samples.

Purpose: To examine the trends of analgesic prescribing at public tertiary hospital outpatient settings and explore the patterns of their utilization in nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), tramadol, and opioid patients.
Patients and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from 2010 to 2016 using the prescription databases of two tertiary hospitals in Malaysia. Prescriptions for nine NSAIDs (ketoprofen, diclofenac, celecoxib, etoricoxib, ibuprofen, indomethacin, meloxicam, mefenamic acid, and naproxen), tramadol, and five other opioids (morphine, fentanyl, oxycodone, dihydrocodeine, and buprenorphine) were included in this study. Annual number of patients and prescriptions were measured in repeat cross-sectional estimates. Descriptive statistics and linear trend analysis were performed using Stata version 13.
Results: A total of 192,747 analgesic prescriptions of the nine NSAIDs, tramadol, and five other opioids were given for 97,227 patients (51.8% NSAIDs patients, 46.6% tramadol patients, and 1.7% opioid patients) from 2010 to 2016. Tramadol (37.9%, n=72,999) was the most frequently prescribed analgesic, followed by ketoprofen (17.5%, n=33,793), diclofenac (16.2%, n=31,180), celecoxib (12.2%, n=23,487), and other NSAIDs (<4.5%). All the analgesics were increased over time except meloxicam, indomethacin, and mefenamic acid. Opioids, primarily morphine (2.2%, n=4,021) and oxycodone (0.5%, n=1,049), were prescribed the least, but the rate of increase was the highest.
Conclusion: Tramadol was the most frequently prescribed analgesic in hospital outpatient settings in Malaysia. Opioids were prescribed the least, but noted the highest increase in utilization.
