    Tissue conditioner is used to condition inflamed mucosa induced by denture stomatitis. However, the drawback of the aging tissue conditioner is increased surface roughness, thus enhance microbial adhesion. Ocimum basilicum is known for its antimicrobial effects but its use in liners has not been investigated. Aims: This study aimed to determine the antifungal efficacy of ocimum basilicum essential oil (OBEO) when incorporated into tissue conditioner against C. albicans and the effect on the properties.

    SUBJECT AND METHODS: The antimicrobial activities were determined using disc diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC). After incorporation into tissue conditioner, the color difference and surface roughness were evaluated after one day. The surface morphology and the antibiofilm activity were assessed on day 1 and day 14.

    RESULTS: The zone of inhibition of OBEO on Sabouraud Dextrose agar was significantly wider than nystatin and deionized water (P=0.000) with the MIC and MFC values were 1.25% and 5%. Both OBEO concentrations incorporated into tissue conditioner, there was no significant difference of color changes in the light-dark character (P=0.102) and surface roughness (P=0.920) when compared to the control group. As for adherence at days 1 and 14, both concentrations of OBEO in tissue conditioner show significantly reduced adherence of C. albicans compared to the control group (P=0.000).

    CONCLUSION: OBEO exhibited significantly better antifungal activity against C. albicans when compared to nystatin and deionized water and resulted in no significant color changes, better surface roughness and lesser adherence of C. albicans toward the tissue conditioner.

    Hahella is a genus that has not been well-studied, with only two identified species. The potential of this genus to produce cellulases is yet to be fully explored. The present study isolated Hahella sp. CR1 from mangrove soil in Tanjung Piai National Park, Malaysia, and performed whole genome sequencing (WGS) using NovaSeq 6000. The final assembled genome consists of 62 contigs, 7,106,771 bp, a GC ratio of 53.5%, and encoded for 6,397 genes. The CR1 strain exhibited the highest similarity with Hahella sp. HN01 compared to other available genomes, where the ANI, dDDH, AAI, and POCP were 97.04%, 75.2%, 97.95%, and 91.0%, respectively. In addition, the CAZymes analysis identified 88 GTs, 54 GHs, 11 CEs, 7 AAs, 2 PLs, and 48 CBMs in the genome of strain CR1. Among these proteins, 11 are related to cellulose degradation. The cellulases produced from strain CR1 were characterized and demonstrated optimal activity at 60 ℃, pH 7.0, and 15% (w/v) sodium chloride. The enzyme was activated by K+, Fe2+, Mg2+, Co2+, and Tween 40. Furthermore, cellulases from strain CR1 improved the saccharification efficiency of a commercial cellulase blend on the tested agricultural wastes, including empty fruit bunch, coconut husk, and sugarcane bagasse. This study provides new insights into the cellulases produced by strain CR1 and their potential to be used in lignocellulosic biomass pre-treatment.

    In the attempt to create a delivery system for an alkali-cation stimulated drug release, a computational study was conducted, aiming for the evaluation of synthetic access towards glycolipid crown ethers analogs and their potential for coordination-induced changes of packing constraints for molecular assemblies. The results disfavor amide-linkages for the creation of macrocycles around the inter-glycosidic bond of a disaccharide. Conformational changes upon cation coordination of the macrocycle decrease the intersection area for easily accessible macrocycles based on lactose. This leads to shrinking intersection areas upon alkali complexation. Maltose-based analogs, on the other hand, exhibited the targeted increase of the glycolipid intersection area and, hence, may be considered as a promising resource.

    BACKGROUND: Flower pigment and shape are determined by the coordinated expression of a set of structural genes during flower development. R2R3-MYB transcription factors are known regulators of structural gene expression. The current study focused on two members of this large family of transcription factors that were predicted to have roles in pigment biosynthesis and organ shape development in orchids.

    METHODS: Phylogenetic analysis was used to identify candidate Dendrobium catenatum R2R3-MYB (DcaMYB) sequences associated with pigment and cell shape development. Gene silencing of candidate DhMYBs in Dendrobium hybrid by direct application of dsRNA to developing flowers was followed by observation of gene expression level and flower phenotypes. Silencing of the structural gene chalcone synthase was used as a comparative control.

    KEY RESULTS: Ten candidate flower-associated DcaMYBs were identified. Flowers treated with dsRNA of DhMYB22 and DhMYB60 sequences were less pigmented and had relatively low expression of anthocyanin biosynthetic genes (F3'H and DFR), lower total anthocyanin concentration and markedly lower levels of cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside. Petals of DhMYB22-treated flowers and sepals of DhMYB60-treated flowers showed the greatest colour difference relative to the same organs in untreated flowers. DhMYB22-treated flowers had relatively narrow and constricted lips, while DhMYB60-treated flowers had narrow and constricted sepals. No significant difference in shape was observed for DhCHS-treated or untreated flowers.

    CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that DhMYB22 and DhMYB60 regulate pigment intensity and floral organ shape in Dendrobium. This is a first report of MYB regulation of floral organ shape in orchids.

    There is an increasing concern about incorporating green criteria into production planning approaches. Production planning models that ignore green parameters may generate outcomes that are unfriendly to the environment. The relevant literature has suggested a flourishing trend towards the integration of green parameters into production planning approaches. The earlier reviews have most commonly analyzed the green production planning approaches from an "energy efficiency" perspective. Literature on the integration of other green criteria is also available. However, such studies are rarely reviewed. Along with "energy efficiency," the study in hand reviews the production planning strategies from another green perspective which is "low-carbon emissions." The first objective of this study is to review the medium and short-term production planning approaches from the aforementioned green criteria and provide a classification scheme. Second, new research avenues are identified to facilitate researchers in incorporating green schemes in production planning approaches. This study explored various databases for articles published on green production planning approaches. Consequently, 84 articles published between 2011 and 2022 were considered for the review. This review pointed out that most of the studies on green production planning considered "energy efficiency" and studies on "carbon emissions" were overlooked. Furthermore, green concepts were mostly integrated into the short-term production planning level and comparatively few studies were found for the medium-term. This study will help researchers to analyze green production planning in terms of modeling approaches, objective functions, uncertainties, solution approaches, etc.

    Flavonoids have diverse beneficial roles that potentiate their application as nutraceutical agents in nutritional supplements and as natural antimicrobial agents in food preservation. To address poor solubility and bioactivity issues, we developed water-soluble micellar formulations loaded with single and multiple flavonoids using the biocompatible surface-active ionic liquid choline oleate. The food preservation performance was investigated using luteolin, naringenin, and quercetin as model bioactive compounds. The micellar formulations formed spherical micelles with particle sizes of <150 nm and exhibited high aqueous solubility (>5.15 mg/mL). Co-delivery of multiple flavonoids (luteolin, naringenin, and quercetin in LNQ-MF) resulted in 84.85% antioxidant activity at 100 μg/mL. The effects on Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica were synergistic with fractional inhibitory concentration indices of 0.87 and 0.71, respectively. LNQ-MF hindered the growth of S. aureus in milk (0.83-0.89 log scale) compared to the control. Co-delivered encapsulated flavonoids are a promising alternative to chemical preservatives.

    This article provides a theoretical framework for comprehending the connections between dynamic data analytics capability (DDAC), innovation capabilities (IC), supply chain resilience (RES), and sustainable supply chain performance (SSCP). Since this is the first empirical investigation of the sequential mediation effect between DDAC and SSCP through IC and RES, it fills a critical need in the supply chain literature. A quantitative methodology was used, involving a survey questionnaire distributed to 259 large Pakistani manufacturing firms. We used PLS-SEM to test for the expected associations. Findings show that using DDAC has a beneficial effect on both innovative and resilient capabilities, which in turn leads to better SSCP. The research illuminates the sequential mediating roles of product, process, and resilience, underlining the need of combining data-driven innovation with resilience in order to achieve sustainable supply chain performance. These results provide useful guidance for businesses that want to boost their sustainability results by taking a more all-encompassing approach to data-driven innovation and resilience.

    Oil spill remediation plays a vital role in mitigating the environmental impacts caused by oil spills. The chemical method is one of the widely recognized approaches in chemical surfactants. However, the most commonly used chemical surfactants are toxic and non-biodegradable. Herein, two biocompatible and biodegradable surfactants were synthesized from orange peel using the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMCl) and organic solvent dimethylacetamide (CH3CN(CH3)2) as reaction media. The acronyms SOPIL and SOPOS refer to the surfactants prepared with BMIMCl and dimethylacetamide, respectively. The surface tension, dispersant effectiveness, optical microscopy, and emulsion stability test were conducted to examine the comparative performance of the synthesized surfactants. The Baffled flask test (BFT) was carried out to determine the dispersion effectiveness. The toxicity test was performed against zebrafish (Danio rerio), whereas the closed bottle test (CBT) evaluated biodegradability. The results revealed that the critical micelle concentration (CMC) value of SOPIL was lower (8.57 mg/L) than that of SOPOS (9.42 mg/L). The dispersion effectiveness values for SOPIL and SOPOS were 69.78% and 40.30%, respectively. The acute toxicity test demonstrated that SOPIL was 'practically non-toxic' with a median lethal concentration of more than 1000 mg/L after 96 h. The biodegradation rate was recorded as higher than 60% for both surfactants within 28 days, demonstrating their readily biodegradable nature. Considering these attributes, biocompatible and biodegradable surfactants derived from orange peel emerge as a promising and sustainable alternative for oil spill remediation.

    BACKGROUND: Homosexual individuals are at high risk of suicide, but there is a shortage of data from developing countries to confirm this. Estimates on mental health and suicide risk among male homosexuals in Bangladesh are needed to generate awareness and to plan services accordingly.

    METHOD: We assessed mental health and suicidal behavior of 102 self-identified homosexual males from a community-based organization that works with the sexual minority population.

    RESULTS: One-third of the participants (32.4%) had experienced attempted suicide, and almost half (47.1%) had a history of suicidal ideation and self-harm (40.2%). Compared to a heterosexual sample, homosexual males had poorer mental health as they scored higher on Beck Hopelessness Scale (Cohen's d = 0.29) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) (Cohen's d = 0.57). The results revealed positive correlations between self-harm, suicidal ideation and suicide attempt scores. Participants with history of suicide attempt, suicide ideation and self-harm reported worse general health, more social dysfunction, and severe depression than those without such history.

    CONCLUSION: Suicidality and mental health conditions among homosexual males in Bangladesh have appeared to be alarming. Given the concerns, we offer some recommendations for practitioners and social workers who are serving this population in Bangladesh.

    Symptomatic giant ganglioneuromas with mediastinal compression are rare, complicating its management with significant morbidity and mortality risks. A meticulous multidisciplinary preoperative planning is pivotal in ensuring success. We describe a case of a 30-year-old man with a giant posterior mediastinal mass with compression and displacement of the mediastinal structures. Biopsy confirmed a ganglioneuroma and patient underwent excision. Surgery was challenging in view of the size and adherence to the local structures. Haemodynamic instabilities were encountered necessitating a pre-emptive femoral-femoral cannulation for CPB. A piece-meal debulking of the tumour was performed, complicated with massive haemorrhage requiring autologous blood transfusion using an intraoperative blood salvage device. The patient recovered and was discharged home well at Day 8. A thorough pre-operative planning involving a multidisciplinary approach, an understanding of the surgical anatomy as well as anticipating impending complications is of paramount importance  in the management of this particular case.

    We present a case report of a 45-year-old Malay female prison officer with a diagnosis of lateral patellofemoral joint (PFJ) osteoarthritis (OA) in her right knee for whom conservative treatment failed. She was periodically followed up for the unresolving anterior right knee pain, and the patient was offered interpositional PFJ arthroplasty with the quadriceps tendon. A novel technique of interpositional PFJ arthroplasty using lateral inner section ipsilateral quadriceps tendon was applied. The approach and surgical technique were described in this case report. The aim of this study is to describe why this technique was chosen, step by step with images on how interpositional PFJ arthroplasty is done and its satisfactory outcome following a three-month follow up.

    The primary responsibility for continuously discharging toxic organic pollutants into water bodies and open environments is the increase in industrial and agricultural activities. Developing economical and suitable methods to continuously remove organic pollutants from wastewater is highly essential. The aim of the present research was to apply response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for optimization and modeling of photocatalytic degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) by commercial TiO2-P25 nanoparticles (TNPs). Dose of TNPs, pH, and AO7 concentration were selected as investigated parameters. RSM results reveal the reflective rate of AO7 removal of ~ 94.974% was obtained at pH 7.599, TNP dose of 0.748 g/L, and AO7 concentration of 28.483 mg/L. The resulting quadratic model is satisfactory with the highest coefficient of determination (R2) between the predicted and experimental data (R2 = 0.98 and adjusted R2 = 0.954). On the other hand, ANNs were successfully employed for modeling of AO7 degradation process. The proposed ANN model was absolutely fitted with experimental results producing the highest R2. Furthermore, root mean square error (RMSE), mean average deviation (MAD), absolute average relative error (AARE), and mean square error (MSE) were examined more to compare the predictive capabilities of ANN and RSM models. The experimental data was well fitted into pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics with more accuracy. Thermodynamic parameters, namely enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs' free energy, and activation energy, were also evaluated to suggest the nature of the degradation process. The increase of temperature was analyzed to be more suitable for the fast removal of AO7 over TNPs. Graphical abstract.

    This paper presents an online system for recording attendance based on facial recognition incorporating facial mask detection. The main objective of this project is to develop an effective attendance system based on face recognition and face mask detection, and to provide this service online through a browser interface. This would allow any user to use this system without the need to install special software. They simply need to open the interface of this system in a browser through any terminal. Recording attendance information online allows data to be easily recorded in a centralized online database. Since faces are used as biometric signatures in this project, all users registered in the system will have their profiles loaded with their face-images samples. Initially, before face recognition can be done, the model training phase based on SVM will be carried out, mainly to develop a trained model that can perform face recognition. A set of synthetic data will also be used to train the same model so that it can perform identification for users wearing face masks. The server application is coded in Python and uses the Open-Source Computer Vision (OpenCV) library for image processing. For web interfaces and the database, PHP and MySQL are used. With the integration of Python and PHP scripting programs, the developed system will be able to perform processing on online servers, while being accessible to users through a browser from any terminal. According to the results and analysis, an accuracy of about 81.8% can be achieved based on a pre-trained model for face recognition and 80% for face mask detection.

    Oil and gas construction projects are critical for meeting global demand for fossil fuels, but they also present unique risks and challenges that require innovative construction approaches. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising technology for tackling these challenges, and this study examines its applications for sustainable development in the oil and gas industry. Using a systematic literature review (SLR), this research evaluates research trends from 2011 to 2022. It provides a detailed analysis of how AI suits oil and gas construction. A total of 115 research articles were reviewed to identify original contributions, and the findings indicate a positive trend in AI research related to oil and gas construction projects, especially after 2016. The originality of this study lies in its comprehensive analysis of the latest research on AI applications in the oil and gas industry and its contribution to developing recommendations for improving the sustainability of oil and gas projects. This research's originality is in providing insight into the most promising AI applications and methodologies that can help drive sustainable development in the oil and gas industry.

    Financial markets are exposed to extreme uncertain circumstances escalating their tail risk. Sustainable, religious, and conventional markets represent three different markets with various characteristics. Motivated with this, the current study measures the tail connectedness between sustainable, religious, and conventional investments by employing a neural network quantile regression approach from December 1, 2008 to May 10, 2021. The neural network recognized religious and conventional investments with maximum exposure to tail risk following the crisis periods reflecting strong diversification benefits of sustainable assets. The Systematic Network Risk Index spots Global Financial Crisis, European Debt Crisis, and COVID-19 pandemic as intensive events yielding high tail risk. The Systematic Fragility Index ranks the stock market in the pre-COVID period and Islamic stocks during the COVID sample as the most susceptible markets. Conversely, the Systematic Hazard Index nominates Islamic stocks as the chief risk contributor in the system. Given these, we portray various implications for policymakers, regulatory bodies, investors, financial market participants, and portfolio managers to diversify their risk using sustainable/green investments.

    The sustainability issues have been surmounted in the last decades. The digital disruption caused by blockchains and other digitally backed currencies has raised several serious concerns for policymakers, governmental agencies, environmentalists, and supply chain managers. Alternatively, sustainable resources are environmentally sustainable and naturally available resources which are employable by several regulation authorities to reduce the carbon footprint and attain energy transition mechanisms to support sustainable supply chains in the ecosystem. Using the asymmetric time-varying parameters vector auto-regressions approach, the current study examines the asymmetric spillovers between blockchain-backed currencies and environmentally supported resources. We find clusters between blockchain-based currencies and resource-efficient metals, highlighting similar-class dominance of spillovers. We portrayed several implications of our study for policymakers, supply chain managers, the blockchain industry, sustainable resources mechanisms, and regulatory bodies to emphasize that natural resources play a significant role in attaining sustainable supply chains servicing the benefits to society at large and to other stakeholders.

    Isolated thrombocytopenia in adults is a common clinical problem, often caused by various hematological disorders. However, vitamin B12 deficiency as a rare cause of isolated thrombocytopenia has been rarely reported in the medical literature. This case report aims to highlight the diagnostic challenges associated with atypical presentations of thrombocytopenia and emphasizes the importance of considering nutritional deficiencies, such as vitamin B12 deficiency, in the diagnostic workup. We report the case of a 38-year-old male who presented with generalized weakness, fatigue, and a history of bruises without trauma. Physical examination and laboratory investigations revealed thrombocytopenia (42 K/µL) with normal red blood cell morphology and no apparent abnormalities in other hematological parameters. Serum vitamin B12 levels were significantly diminished (128 pg/ml). The patient was treated with subcutaneous mecobalamin 1000 mcg supplementation, resulting in improvements in serum vitamin B12 levels (772 pg/ml) and platelet count (154 × 109/L) values. This case highlights the importance of considering vitamin B12 deficiency as a potential cause of isolated thrombocytopenia in adults. The lack of hypersegmented neutrophils and characteristic signs of macrocytic anemia in the context of vitamin B12 deficiency emphasizes the necessity for a thorough investigation to rule out other possible causes. Hematological problems associated with thrombocytopenia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency can be treated early to resolve them and avoid complications.

    Dietary restriction (DR) interventions have demonstrated their efficacy in extending lifespan; however, the association between lifespan extension and health span remains unclear. This article aims to analyze the relationship between DR-induced lifespan and health span in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a widely used animal model in lifespan studies. By examining various parameters such as lipofuscin accumulation (an aging marker) and locomotor and feeding capacities (indicators of muscle degradation rate), we have compiled papers that investigate and report on these DR-induced effects.The majority of the papers reviewed consistently demonstrate that DR improves both lifespan and health span in C. elegans. Worms subjected to DR exhibit slower lipofuscin accumulation compared to those fed ad libitum, indicating a reduction in age-related cellular damage. Additionally, DR-treated worms display a higher locomotion capacity, suggesting a slower rate of muscle degradation. However, it is worth noting that there are some discrepancies among the papers regarding feeding capacity. These contradictions can be attributed to the different methods employed to initiate DR. While many approaches slow muscle degeneration and enhance pumping rates through adaptation to limited food sources, other methods, such as using eat-2 mutant worms or interventions that mimic the effects of eat-2, reduce feeding capacity and consequently restrict food intake. In conclusion, the findings suggest a strong correlation between DR-induced longevity and the extension of health span in C. elegans, as evidenced by improvements in various health span parameters. DR interventions not only extend lifespan but also mitigate age-related markers and preserve locomotor capacity. Although conflicting results are observed regarding feeding capacity, the overall evidence supports the notion that DR promotes healthier aging in this animal model.
