    In this paper, four species of the genus Diduga Moore, [1887] from China (Chongqing and Guangdong) and Malaysia (Borneo, Sabah) are described as new to science, namely D. simianshanasp. nov., D. chebalingasp. nov., D. chewisp. nov., and D. hollowayisp. nov. Adults of these species are illustrated in color, and images of the male and female genitalia are provided. A distribution map of the new species is provided, together with an updated checklist of all species of Diduga.

    A new species of Diplodiscus is described and illustrated from one collection made in lowland mixed dipterocarp forest in Sabah, Malaysia. Conspicuous by its twig colour, leaf shape and indumentum, it is probably allied to D. longifolius, but differs in sufficient characters (shape, indumentum, apex and venation of blade, flower bud shape and size, petal diameter, ovary shape and fruit shape and size) to be a species in its own right. A key to the species of Diplodiscus in Malaysia also is provided.

    Objectives: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of the time and instant coffee solution on the color stability of three types of composite resin based veneer systems. Materials and Methods: 24 composite resin veneer samples were selected and divided into three groups: two groups of prefabricated veneers (Edelweiss, Ultradent Inc™ (EDL) and Componeer, Coltène/ Whaledent AGTM (CMP)) and one group of laboratory made (Nexco, Ivoclar Vivadent (NEX)) veneer system were tested (n=8). Specimens were prepared and stored in staining solution (instant coffee) and assessed color changes with Minolta spectrophotometer every three days for a period of 27 days, after which color differences (ΔE*) were calculated. Data collection and analysis was done using one-way ANOVA and Student’s t-test (α=0.05). Results: One-way ANOVA revealed a significant difference in color stability between the two veneer systems. NEX group veneer system exhibited the highest color stability (ΔE*= 0.73 ± 0.5) as compared to prefabricated veneer groups (EDL 10.07 ± 5.15, CMP 7.41 ± 4.64) with p value

    Three fluorescent organic compounds-furocoumarin (FC), dansyl aniline (DA), and 7-hydroxycoumarin-3-carboxylic acid (CC)-are mixed to produce almost pure white light emission (WLE). This novel mixture is immobilised in silica aerogel and applied as a coating to a UV LED to demonstrate its applicability as a low-cost, organic coating for WLE via simultaneous emission. In ethanol solution and when immobilised in silica aerogel, the mixture exhibits a Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity index of (0.27, 0.33). It was observed that a broadband and simultaneous emission involving coumarin carboxylic acid, furocoumarin and dansyl aniline played a vital role in obtaining a CIE index close to that of pure white light.

    The compass rose pattern in financial data may indicate the presence of a nonlinear, possibly chaotic, data generating mechanism. The analysis of three key financial asset and denoised returns, gold, the Great British Pound/US dollar spot exchange rate, and the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index, reveals that over four equivalent subperiods, from 1996 to 2015, the compass rose pattern changes. This finding provides an opportunity to establish how noise affects financial time series. We conclude that the compass rose pattern is unlikely the product of an underlying nonlinear structure, since there is evidence of nonlinearity in all time periods, even those where the compass rose pattern is not evident. Therefore, the compass rose patterns, seen in the denoised data, suggest that the presence of noise masks the underlying dynamics of the asset returns.

    The effect of partial substitution of pumpkin flour for rice flour on the physical properties and sensory attributes of gluten-free muffin were investigated. Pumpkin flour was used to replace 10, 15 and 20% rice flour in a control gluten-free muffin formulation (without pumpkin flour). The partial substitution of pumpkin flour for rice flour did not affect moisture content of gluten-free muffins. However, the pumpkin flour substitution caused significant reduction in water activity of gluten-free muffins. Results on the volume, specific volume and height of all gluten-free muffins showed no significant effect with the increasing percentage of pumpkin flour substitution. However, pumpkin flour substitution significantly reduced the firmness of composite muffins, and improved its springiness. The colour of crumb progressively became darker as the level of pumpkin flour substitution increased. Moreover, the results also showed that the substitution of pumpkin flour caused an increase in yellowness (b*) value of crust and crumb of gluten-free muffin. Sensory evaluation indicated that all gluten-free muffins incorporated with pumpkin flour received similar score when compared to that of control.

    This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of different drying methods (sun drying, cabinet
    drying and convection oven) and hydrocolloids (carrageenan and alginate) on physicochemical
    properties of semi-dried catfish jerky. The concentration of hydrocolloids used was 1% and 2%.
    Samples without the addition of hydrocolloid served as the control group. The water activity of semidried catfish jerky decreased with the addition of hydrocolloids. For colour properties, lightness (L*)
    value of semi-dried catfish jerky increased with the increased concentration of hydrocolloids. The
    addition of 2% alginate (2%A) and 2% carrageenan (2%C) showed higher lightness (L*) than the
    controlled group for all drying methods, except for sun drying with carrageenan. Both carrageenan and
    alginate added into semi-dried catfish jerky increased the processing yields. The addition of 2%
    carrageenan (2%C) and 1% alginate (1%A) improved the product yields for all drying methods. This
    paper argues that the application of cabinet dryer gives better shelf stability due to the lower range of
    water activity than other drying methods while preserving colour quality and product yields.

    Heat treatment is being chosen to be an alternative to replace the use of methyl bromide. It involved raising and maintaining the temperature in the warehouse or storage of grain between 50°C to 60°C to control the stored product beetles. The duration may vary from 6 hours to 24 hours based on the types of storage, grains and its quantity. The need for alternatives is vital, considering the statutory limit (until the year 2015) for methyl bromide usage other than for phytosanitary purpose, and the likely widespread occurrence of insect resistance to both methyl bromide and phosphine. To note, these have been used in Malaysia for over half a century. Thus, the objective of this study focusses on testing the effectiveness of lethal temperature and duration in controlling the stored product beetles. High temperatures were used ( 30°C, 60°C, 70°C and 80°C) to decease the stored product beetles which are Sitophilus oryzae, Tribolium casteneum, and Oryzaephilus
    surinamensis. By using an oven, milled rice with tested beetles were exposed to the heat treatment. Each day, the heat exposures were given for 15 minutes. The number of dead beetles in 6 days exposure and effect on the eating quality of the cooked rice was observed at the end of the treatment. For Sitophilus oryzae, the duration of exposure requires six days of treatment (15 minutes per day) to kill all 25 adults atr the highest temperature (80°C) while theones with the least resistance; Oryzaephilus surinamensis requires 60 minutes. By using an oven, it is recommended that 60°C to 80°C of ,temperatures in 15 minutes of exposure be adopted to ensure the effectiveness against all species in heat treatment. The eating quality of cooked rice in terms of the aroma, stickiness, taste, colour and overall acceptability was not affected from the multiple exposure (3 times) to the heat treatment. Findings from this study indicated heat treatment is a potential replacement for insecticides. However, it is recommended to use high temperature in range of 60°C to 80°C in a short time (within 15 minutes) of exposure. Thus, heat treatment can be used for commercial application rice mill producer to control stored product insects during storage phase and milling process.

    The conventional heart rate monitor is usually developed with a numeric digital display. This numerical view is obviously not practical to be used during exercise. In this study, the iOS-based mobile application, called Chromozone, was developed to monitor heart rate using the universal color-coding system. The heart rate monitor during the exercise is designed to notify the exercise intensity information to users using the three universal color-coded (i.e. green zone: optimal heart rate; yellow zone: heart rate lower than the optimal zone, and red zone: heart rate higher than the optimal zone). Chromozone is programmed to display uniform colors across the smart phone display, which allows users to easily be informed in regards to the state of exercise intensity. The transfer of heart rate data from the chest transmitter to Chromozone application is designed to use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) system technology. The heart rate data is then processed by the application to determine the intensity range of exercise training heart rate based on the user’s personal input (i.e. age, gender, fitness levels and training objective). Preliminary analysis found that Chromozone application is effective in delivering real-time exercise intensity heart rate. Chromozone could potentially help athletes, active individuals and clinical populations to monitor and regulate their workout training regime in a more effective and safer manner.

    The effect of solvent, substrate-to-solvent ratio and concentration of pectinase on the extraction of betacyanins from the pulp of red pitahaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus) was evaluated with respect to yield, betacyanin content (BC) and total sugar content. The application of betacyanins from red pitahaya in ice cream was then evaluated by comparison to a commercial colourant, E-162. Without the use of pectinase, the highest yields (9.11 ± 0.35%) of betacyanins were obtained using 95% ethanol at a substrate-to-solvent ratio of 1:1. With the use of pectinase at a concentration of 1.5%, the highest yield (17.11-17.45%) of betacyanins were obtained using water as a solvent at a substrate-to-solvent ratio of 1:1 and 1:2. Pectinase treatment (1.5-2.5%) using water as a solvent yielded betacyanins with the highest BC (126.47-130.83 g kg-1) and lowest total sugar content (57.85-59.74 g kg-1). The BC and total colour changes were similar in ice cream containing betacyanins from red pitahaya and E-162 throughout the 21-days of frozen storage at -18 °C. Betacyanins from red pitahaya or E-162 enhanced the antioxidant properties of ice cream. The sensory evaluation of ice cream containing betacyanins from red pitahaya showed a better colour acceptability than E-162.

    The lack of aesthetic properties of electrospun nanofibres in terms of colour appearance is the drive in this preliminary study. This research is conducted to study the dyeing behaviour and colorimetric properties of electrospun nanofibres blended with Remazol Yellow FG reactive dye using dope-dyeing method via electrospinning process. This paper reports the colorimetric properties of dyed poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibres within the range of 2.5 wt.% to 12.5 wt.% dye content. The electrospinning parameters were fixed at the electrospinning distance of 10 cm, constant feed rate of 0.5 mL/h and applied voltage of 15 kV. The resulting impregnated dye of 10 wt.% exhibits acceptable colour difference of dyed PVA nanofibres, with a mean fibre diameter of 177.1 ± 11.5 nm. The SEM micrographs show the effect of dye content on morphology and fibre diameter upon the increment of dye used. Further increase of dye content adversely affects the jet stability during the electrospinning, resulting in macroscopic dropping phenomenon. The presence of all prominent peaks of Remazol dye in the PVA nanofibers was supported with FTIR analysis. The addition of dye into the nanofibres has resulted in the enhancement of thermal stability of the PVA as demonstrated by TGA analysis.

    Introduction: Coated archwires improve aesthetics during orthodontic treatment. However, little is known regarding
    their clinical benefit. This randomised controlled trial (RCT) compared the tooth alignment (TA), coating loss (CL),
    colour change (∆E*), and patient perception of coated archwires with their controls. Details of ∆E* and perception were reported in the second part of the articles. Methods: This RCT was done at three centres. Participants
    were randomised to receive one of four treatment interventions using 0.014” superelastic coated nickel-titanium
    archwires from Orthocare, RMO, G&H, and conventional uncoated 3M Unitek® archwires. These archwires were
    ligated during bonding and collected after eighth week and questionnaires were distributed to participants in the
    experimental groups only. After removal, TA and CL were measured using Little’s Irregularity Index and Autodesk®
    AutoCAD® software, respectively. At the time of this preliminary reporting, 84 participants had completed the trial. Two archwires fractured and were excluded. Therefore, 166 archwires (n = 166) were analysed. Results: Only
    non-extraction cases showed statistically significant differences in TA change between all groups (p = 0.005) and
    RMO showed significantly lowest mean of TA (1.5 mm). RMO and Orthocare showed significant TA change in the
    upper and lower arches (p = 0.037, 0.048). CL was found to be insignificant for both extraction and non-extraction
    cases (p >0.05). Comparison between upper and lower arches revealed no significant difference in TA and CL in all
    groups (p >0.05). Conclusion: From this preliminary analysis, Orthocare provides better TA in non-extraction cases
    despite highest percentage of coating loss.

    Spectacular color change during a chemical reaction is always fascinating. A variety of chemosensors including Schiff bases have been reported for selective as well as sensitive recognition of ions. This review explains the use of Schiff bases as color changing agents in the detection of anions. This magic of colors is attributed to change in the electronic structure of the system during reaction. Schiff base chemosensors are easy to synthesize, inexpensive and can be used for visual sensing of different ions. Development of Schiff base chemosensors is commonly based on the interactions between polar groups of Schiff bases and ionic species and the process of charge transfer, electron transfer and hydrogen bonding between Schiff bases and ionic species cause the color of the resultant to be changed. Therefore, designing of simple Schiff base chemosensors which are capable of selective sensing of different anions has attracted considerable interest. In particular, naked eye sensing through color change is important and useful since it allows sensing of ions through color changes without using any instrumental technique.HighlightsNaked eye sensors are of much interest these days due to their visual detection properties rather employing complex instrumentation.Optical sensors are sensitive, selective, cost effective and robust.The magic of color change is fascinating factor in detection by these sensors.The color change may be attributed by interaction between anion and Schiff base by different mechanism i.e. electron transfer, charge transfer, hydrogen bonding, ICT etc.LOD data is an evidence of their great efficiency.

    The quality change of fish sausage (keropok lekor) coated in sago starch-gelatine coating with
    papaya seed extract (PSE) during chill storage (7°C) was determined. During storage, pH,
    thiobarbituric acid value (TBA), colour, moisture, and the total plate count were evaluated. pH
    of samples significantly dropped (p < 0.05) during storage, and the highest decrease was in
    control sample. The moisture content in control sample had an increasing trend while that of
    samples with 5 and 7% PSE coatings significantly decreased, and only a slight change for
    samples with 0% PSE coating. All samples had significant increase in their TBA values during
    storage. The presence of the coating provided a positive effect on the colour of the fish sausages since no significant colour changes were observed during storage. TPC of control and
    coated sausage in 0, 5, and 7% PSE exceeded the recommended microbial standard after 2, 6,
    8, and 4 d of storage, respectively. Overall, coating with 5% of PSE was the most effective in
    retarding the quality deterioration of the fish sausages.

    Pennywort (Centella asiatica) is a herbaceous vegetable commonly consumed raw as ‘ulam’ or salad. Consumption of raw leafy green vegetables is one of the pathogenic mechanisms that could cause foodborne outbreaks. The aim of the present work was therefore to investigate the effect of pulsed light (PL) treatment at fluences of 1.5, 4.2, 6.9, 9.6, and 12.3 J/cm² on the microbiological and physical quality of pennywort stored at 4 ± 1°C. Escherichia coli (E. coli) were inoculated onto the pennywort leaves before being exposed to PL and viewed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PL fluences of 6.9, 9.6, and 12.3 J/cm² significantly reduced the microbial count; however, the highest inactivation was obtained by using fluences of 9.6 and 12.3 J/cm². The color of pennywort was not significantly affected by PL treatment applied at lower fluences of 1.5, 4.2, and 6.9 J/cm²; however, at higher fluence, 9.6 and 12.3 J/cm², the color was affected. PL at 1.5, 4.2, 6.9, and 9.6 J/cm² was able to retain the texture appearance of the leaves. To conclude, PL at 6.9 J/cm² showed the best fluence to reduce total aerobic mesophilic count while retaining the physical properties of pennywort leaves and extend the shelf life to about four days. The inactivation of E. coli population was significantly higher at PL fluence of 6.9 J/cm². It was observed that PL caused the destruction to the surface of E. coli’s cell membrane. The reductions of samples inoculated with E. coli were better than those achieved in native microbiota. Furthermore, the present work also demonstrated that PL treatment was able to reduce the microbial count on pennywort leaves.

    This study was carried out to determine the physiological changes (survival, growth, molting cycle, sex differentiation, and gill condition) of mud crab, Scylla paramamosain crablet at different water temperatures of 24, 28 and 32 °C, and ambient temperature of 27 to 30 °C. Thermoregulatory behavior, represented by preferred temperature (29.83 ± SD 2.47 °C), critical thermal minimum (17.33 ± SD 0.58 °C), critical thermal maximum (40 ± SD 0.00 °C), and thermal tolerance interval (22.67 ± SD 0.58 °C), were checked for Crablet 1 stage only (with ambient temperature as acclimation temperature).Both low (24 °C) and high (32 °C) temperatures were associated with lower growth performance, and survival rate (p < 0.05), in comparison with both 28 °C and ambient temperature treatments.Male ratio at low temperaturetreatment (24 °C) was higher (80.09 ± SD 18.86%) than for other treatments (p < 0.05), observed as 44.81 ± D 10.50%, 41.94 ± SD 19.44%, and 76.30 ± SD 5.13% for 28 °C, 32 °C and ambient temperature treatments, respectively. However, there was no significant difference observed between 24 °C, 28 °C, and ambient temperature treatments. Anatomical alterations of gill lamellae of S. paramamosain crablet for both 32 °C, and 24 °C treatments, appeared thinner and paler than at both 28 °C, and ambient temperature treatments. Based on this study, temperature of 28 to 30 °C was recommended as the optimal temperature for the long-term nursery phase of S. paramamosain.

    Yellow gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus) is a species native to Southeast Asia and is famous as ornamental species. However, hobbyists and farmers encounter problems where its body colour easily becomes faded in captivity. Since colour enhancer pellets are expensive, an experiment was performed to determine whether tank colour can influence the body colour intensity and growth of T. trichopterus. Four different tank colours (white, yellow, blue and green) with five replicates were tested where fish were kept under natural lighting (outdoor) conditions for two months. The results demonstrated that fish reared in green coloured tank showed an increment in its colour intensity while fish reared in white tanks increased its body weight. It can be concluded that tank colour does affect the body colour intensity and weight of T. trichopterus. This study will help farmers and hobbyists to solve colour fading problem using a cheaper way.

    Pink Antigonon leptopushave potential to be commercialized as cut flowers for flower arrangement. In order to determine cut inflorescences' vase life, vase solution treatments containing Artificial Tap Water as control, salicyclic acid (SA) at 100, 200, 300 mg/L and combination of 100, 200, 300 mg/L SA with 2% sucrose were conducted. Parameters observed were vase life, relative fresh weight (RFW), vase solution uptake (VSU), flower drop (FD), flower colour, relative water content (RWC) and pH. The results showed that cut inflorescences in vase treatment containing 200 mg/L SA + 2% sucrose and 300 mg/L + 2% sucrose had 1.6 fold longer vase life than the control, showing higher water uptake and reduced flower drop by 28%.

    BACKGROUND: If a temporary restoration is in the esthetic area and needs to be worn for a long time, the color stability of temporary materials becomes an important factor.

    OBJECTIVES: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the long-term effects of various staining solutions on the color stability of different temporary materials produced with the computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology.

    MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the study, the following materials were used: VITA CAD-Temp® (group 1); Ceramill® Temp (group 2); and Telio® CAD (group 3). Forty disk-shaped specimens (10 mm in diameter, 2 mm in thickness) of each material (N = 120) were produced with a CAD/CAM system. Staining solutions - of tea (A), of coffee (B) and cola (C) - and distilled water (D, control) were used, and color was evaluated before and after storing the samples in the solutions. Measurements were taken with a spectrophotometer and the color parameters (L*, a*, b*, and ΔE) were calculated according to the Commission internationale de l'éclairage system (CIELab). The results were evaluated with the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's tests (α = 0.05).

    RESULTS: Clinically perceivable (ΔE00 > 0.8) and statistically significant (p < 0.001) color differences were detected in all specimens. The highest ΔE00 value was found in the Ceramill Temp specimens. In addition, the highest ΔE00 values were noted for the specimens stored in cola and the coffee solution for all groups. The lowest ΔE00 value was observed for the groups stored in the tea solution.

    CONCLUSIONS: Clinically perceivable color changes were observed in all the specimens kept in the solutions. Color changes were greater for cola and coffee as compared to tea.

    Sea cucumbers, blind cylindrical marine invertebrates that live in the ocean intertidal beds have more than thousand species available of varying morphology and colours throughout the world. Sea cucumbers have long been exploited in traditional treatment as a source of natural medicinal compounds. Various nutritional and therapeutic values have been linked to this invertebrate. These creatures have been eaten since ancient times and purported as the most commonly consumed echinoderms. Some important biological activities of sea cucumbers including anti-hypertension, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-asthmatic, anti-bacterial and wound healing.
