    Over the last century, the earth’s climate has changed. It is a serious global, long-term problem which involves complex interactions. A lot of evidence suggests that most of the observed factors contributing to the crisis over the last 50 years can be attributed to human activities. Malaysia has always been vulnerable to extreme climatic events such as typhoons, floods and drought. We expect climate change to exacerbate these vulnerabilities. To ensure, that our water resources will always be secure and ready for use. We need to create awareness in the public and the policy makers so that they will acknowledge that the climate change issue is real. They also need to accept that actions to adapt with our vulnerabilities should be immediately put in place. We can do this by integrating the various sector policies and securing the participation of all stakeholders in Malaysia and other countries.

    This study investigated the thermal properties of three room temperature curing adhesives containing nano particles which were thixotropic and shear thinning which allowed injection into overhead holes when exposed to different environmental conditions. Viscosity and shear stress of the adhesives were measured as a function of shear rate. The thermal behaviour of the adhesives were measured using dynamic mechanical thermal anylisis following exposures to different temperatures and humidities which included temperatures of 20 degrees Celcius, 30 degrees Celcius and 50 degrees Celcius, relative humidities of 65% RH, 75% RH 95% RH soaked in water at 20 degrees Celcius and placed in the oven at 50 degrees Celcius. The dynamic thermal properties reported include storage and loss modulus, the loss tangent and the glass transition temperature ( Tg ). For nano- and micro-particles filled adhesives, the Tg increased with the temperature increase, even though the adhesives was subjected to high humidity and this was due to further cross-linking. The results showed that room temperature cured epoxies were only partially cured at room temperature.

    Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA) is a systematic, semi-structured activity carried out in the field by a multidisciplinary team that is designed to obtain new information and hypotheses about rural life. This article reports the results of an RRA conducted in Kampung Paris 1 (KGP1), Kinabatangan, Sabah under the Annual Health Promotion Program of the School of Medicine, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. A systematic random sampling was used to recruit the villagers and data was obtained through compilation of pre-existing data, field observation, structured interviews with key informants and villagers. Cardiorespiratory diseases were prevalent in KGP1. Common water sources such as rain water collected in dug wells in KGP1 were unhygienic. Dangerous toxic fumes were produced by the burning of municipal wastes nearby village houses. The villagers of KGP1 were exposed to various farm animals, which may harbor zoonoses. Health care services are limited in KGP1. Villagers who were not poor (>RM897) represented 48% of the population, followed by the poor (RM503-897), 20% and the hardcore poor (1.00 person per bedroom. Poor water hygiene, polluted air from open burning, exposure to farm animals, poverty, poor education, overcrowding and inadequate health care services were among the few possible factors affecting the health of villagers in KGP1. Formal rigorous research should be conducted in the future to facilitate specific health interventions in areas of need such as KGP1.

    An attempt was made in this investigation to trace the dynamic response of roller compacted concrete dam, which is subjected to horizontal ground motion by considering the interactions between flexible foundations, reservoir water, and bottom reservoir sediments. Two-dimensional finiteinfinite element was used for the non-linear elasto-plastic dynamic analysis. In this analysis, special emphasis was given to the non-linear behaviour of discontinuities along RCC dam-bedding rock foundation which was modelled by thin layer interface. Analysis was first carried out under static loading (self-weight and hydrostatic pressure), and this this was followed by seismic analysis, with hydrodynamic pressure effect in a dam-reservoir system. Based on the numerical dynamic results, it is concluded that the bottom reservoir sediment has significant effect on the seismic response of the RCC gravity dam. Moreover, there is a redistribution of the stresses at thin layer interface with significant stresses reduction, which is resulted from the release of energy through different modes of deformation in this region.

    Tailing sand is the residue mineral from tin extraction that contains between 94% and 99.5% silica, which can be used as moulding sand. It is found in abundance in the Kinta Valley in the state of Perak, Malaysia. Adequate water content and clay in moulding sand are important factors for better strength and
    casting quality of products made from tailing sand. Samples of tailing sand were investigated according
    to the American Foundrymen Society (AFS) standard. Cylindrical test pieces of Ø50 mm×50 mm in height from various sand-water ratios were compacted by applying three ramming blows of 6666g each using a Ridsdale-Dietert metric standard rammer. The specimens were tested for green compression strength using a Ridsdale-Dietert universal sand strength machine. Before the tests were conducted, moisture content of the tailing sand was measured using a moisture analyser. A mixture bonded with 8% clay possesses higher green compression strength compared to samples bonded with 4% clay. The results also show that in order to achieve maximum green compression strength, the optimum allowable moisture content for mixtures bonded with 8% clay is ranged between 3.75 and 6.5% and for mixtures bonded with 4% clay is 3-5.5%.

    Starch is a biodegradable polymer produced in abundance from many renewable resources. This study examined the influence of citric acid (0-40% w/wt%) ) and water (0-40% w/wt%) as secondary additive and glycerol as plasticizer on the mechanical properties of bio-plastic starch (BPS) from Malaysian sago. The CA content varies from 0 to 40 w/wt% while water was also varied from 0 to 40 w/wt%. FT-IR spectroscopy showed that acid citric improve the properties of BPS and water give negative effects to the carbon hydrogenbond. It is obvious that the addition of the CA at 30 wt/wt% improve the mechanical property of BPS to more than 40% compare to the addition of water.

    The total lipid contents and the concentration of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic
    (DHA) fatty acid of fourteen selected marine, three freshwater fish species, four shellfish species and two selected canned fish species of East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia were determined. The fat content of all samples ranged from 1.01 % to 15.83 % with silver catfish reported to have the highest value. Most of the fish had fat amounts lower than 10% of their total weight. In general, DHA concentrations (50.50-165.21 µg/g) were significantly higher than EPA (11.12-55.38 µg/g) in all of the fish species analyzed. Among all marine fish species, the sixbar grouper recorded the highest concentration of DHA (165.21 µg/g) while barramundi had the highest concentration of EPA (55.38 µg/g). In conclusion, all fish and shellfish species are considered a good source of EPA and DHA, representing a very valuable essential nutrient for maintenance of human health.

    Legume is a plant in the family of Fabacae or Leguminosae that rich in protein, carbohydrate, dietary fibre, and minerals. Germination of legume causes some important changes in the biochemical and a nutritional characteristic of the legumes that may be beneficial to human’s health and nutritional status. This study was carried out to determine the effect of germination on total phenolic, tannin and phytic acid contents of soy beans and peanut. The process of germination was carried out by soaking legumes in water for 6 hours, followed by germinating them in wet muslin cloth for 48 hours.     A study has been carried out using a gamma-ray spectrometric system to determine the natural
    radioactivity level in bricks made from industrial waste and their associated radiation hazard.
    Brick-1 and brick-2 contained waste from coal power plant and granite industry, respectively. The
    leachability of radionuclides from these bricks was also investigated. The activity concentration
    values of 226Ra,
    228Ra,
    232Th, and 40K are 64.25, 63.15, 67.9 and 254.19 Bq/kg, respectively in brick-
    1, and 193, 164.48, 164.63 and 1348.75 Bq/kg, respectively in brick-2. The radiation hazard
    indexes such as radium equivalent activities (Raeq), representative level index (Iγr), external hazard
    index (Hex) and internal hazard index (Hin) were calculated and compared with the internationally
    approved values. Results indicate that brick-1 showed less radiological hazard than brick-2. This
    suggested that brick-1 could be used in building construction without exceeding the proposed
    criterion level.The leachability of 226Ra for bricks showed the activity concentration slightly
    exceeded 1 Bq/L which is the limit generally used for industrial wastewater.

    Environmental pollution specifically water pollution is alarming both in the developed and developing countries. Heavy metal contamination of water resources is a critical issue which adversely affects humans, plants and animals. Phytoremediation is a cost-effective remediation technology which able to treat heavy metal polluted sites. This environmental friendly method has been successfully implemented in constructed wetland (CWs) which is able to restore the aquatic biosystem naturally. Nowadays, many aquatic plant species are being investigated to determine their potential and effectiveness for phytoremediation application, especially high growth rate plants i.e. macrophytes. Based on the findings, phytofiltration (rhizofiltration) is the sole method which defined as heavy metals removal from water by aquatic plants. Due to specific morphology and higher growth rate, free-floating plants were more efficient to uptake heavy metals in comparison with submerged and emergent plants. In this review, the potential of wide range of aquatic plant species with main focus on four well known species (hyper-accumulators): Pistia stratiotes, Eicchornia spp., Lemna spp. and Salvinia spp. was investigated. Moreover, we discussed about the history, methods and future prospects in phytoremediation of heavy metals by aquatic plants comprehensively.

    Raw goat milk is recognized as one kind of nutritious food owed to its originality and
    medicinal values. This study aimed to evaluate the physico-chemical and microbiological
    qualities of locally produced raw goat milk prior any processing steps during storage. Milk
    samples passed organoleptic test and C.O.B. test were mostly (88.89 %) failed in alcohol test.
    AOAC Official method of oven drying method, Kjeldahl method and Soxhlet method were
    performed in physico-chemical analysis where results obtained were partially in lined with
    reported literature due to subjective factors of breeds, geographical areas and feeds. The locally
    produced raw goat milk’s compositions are high in water content and low in fat percentage.
    Initial total plate count, coliform count and proteolytic count tested were 3.44 log cfu/ml, 1.87
    log cfu/ml and 1.97 log cfu/ml, respectively. Storage time showed significant effect on the
    bacterial counts (p>0.05) of milk samples. Shelf-life of milk samples were kept up to 12 hours
    under ambient temperature (3.95 log cfu/ml) had not exceeded the standard limit. The shelflife
    of the milk samples were extended up to 16 days storage under refrigerated temperature
    of 4°C. The microbiological quality of the milk samples showed a significant bacteriological
    growth upon prolonged storage and high initial coliform count indicates possible poor hygienic
    practices at farm level.

    An air fin cooler system consists of a tube bundle that is used to cool the various processing fluids in process industries that utilizes air as a cooling medium. The said tubes failed when exposed to corrosive environment(s). Tubes located at the bottom row of the air fin cooler were corroded as a result of exposure to rain water, brought in by induced air when the wind blows. The tube material is A179 Carbon steel. Two tubes, namely Tube A and Tube B along with an aluminum fin in each tube were investigated. A leak was observed on tube A, probably due to Corrosion Under Deposit mechanism. A general corrosion attack was observed at tube B, and macroscopic analysis showed that the corrosion occurred along the grain boundaries, which consist of ferrite and pearlite. Microanalysis showed that the corrosion product on the outer surface of the tube consists of Fe, O, S and Cl elements. It is concluded that the humid environment contains corrosive elements such as S and Cl. EDAX analysis on the fin showed that the material is pure aluminum. However, the aluminum was corroded by galvanized corrosion and produced brittle Al2O3 as a result.

    The performance and operational characteristics of a laboratory scale modified anaerobic hybrid baffled (MAHB) reactor were studied using recycled paper mill effluent (RPME) wastewater. MAHB reactor was continuously operated at 35°C for 90 days with organic loading rate (OLR) increased from 0.14 to 0.57 g/L/dy. This present study demonstrated that the system was proficient in treating low strength RPME wastewater. Highest carbon oxygen demand (COD) removal were recorded up to 97% for an organic loading of 0.57 g /L/dy while effluent alkalinity assured that the system pH in the MAHB compartments were of great advantages to acidogens and methanogens respectively. Methane and biogas production rate shows increment as the load increases, which evidently indicated that the most significant approach to enhance gas production rates involves the increment of incoming substrate moderately. Variations of biogas and volatile fatty acid (VFA) in different compartments of MAHB reactor indicated the chronological degradation of substrate. The compartmental structure of MAHB reactor provided its strong ability to resist shock loads. From this present study, it shows the potential usage of MAHB reactor broadens the usage of multi-phase anaerobic technology for industrial wastewater treatment.

    Cantaloupes continue to ripen after harvesting which is caused by ethylene production due to climacteric behaviour during postharvest storage. In this study, the cantaloupe fruits harvested at commercial maturity were evaluated for quality attributes during three weeks of storage at 10°C and a relative humidity (RH) of 90±5%. In addition, fresh-cut samples were stored for a further 19 days at 2°C and 87% RH. The fresh-cut samples were prepared on a weekly basis by dipping into deionised water (control) at 2°C for 1 minute. The effect of postharvest storage of cantaloupe on the physico-chemical properties and microbial activity was observed prior to fresh-cut processing. It was found that firmness, luminosity (L*), and titratable acidity (TA) decreased, while total soluble solids (TSS), pH, TSS:TA ratio, microbial activity (total plate count (TPC) and yeast and mould (YM)) of the fresh-cut increased over the postharvest storage period of the fruit. Meanwhile, the orange colour and the intensity (hue angle, hab, and chromaticity) of the flesh did not differ significantly during storage. The cantaloupe stored for three weeks at a low temperature indicated a successful potential for fresh-cut processing due to good maintenance of the product quality.

    Duck feet collagen was added to threadfin bream and sardine surimi to study its effect on physicochemical properties such as folding test, gel strength, cook loss, water holding capacity, expressible moisture, texture profile analysis and colour measurement. As compared to commercial fish scale collagen and cow collagen, the addition of duck feet collagen resulted in a significant improvement in the quality of the sardine surimi. Duck feet collagen was able to improve the folding test score of sardine surimi from 3.00 to 5.00; gel strength was increased from 275.70 g.mm to 2682.70 g.mm and hardness of gel was increased from 1.12kg to 6.00kg. Addition of duck feet collagen improved the gel strength of threadfin bream surimi from 1696.70 g.mm to 5579.40 g.mm and hardness of gel was increased from 4.55kg to 10.32kg. Colour of threadfin bream and sardine surimi also improve with the addition of duck feet collagen. The lightness was increased from 66.47 to 66.89 (threadfin bream) and from 62.32 to 63.60 for sardine. The results suggest that duck feet collagen has potential as an alternative source of protein additive for the improvement of the physicochemical properties of low grade surimi.

    This study was done to assess the total phenolic compounds (TPC) and 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity in the flowers and leaves of Clitoria ternateaand Vitex negundo Linn. by using methanol and water extraction. TPC were evaluated using Folin-Ciocalteau method. Methanol was more efficient in extracting phenolic compounds compared with water in measuring TPC. Vitex negundo Linn. contained higher amount of TPC compared to Clitoria ternatea. Besides that, leaves for both plants showed higher amount of TPC compared to the flowers. Methanol extracted Vitex negundo Linn. showed higher DPPH scavenging activity compared with Clitoria ternatea. In contrast, DPPH scavenging activity for water extracted Clitoria ternatea showed higher value in compare with water extracted Vitex negundo Linn. The type of solvent used to extract the plant material and concentration of extracts used showed significance difference (P < 0.05) on the amount of DPPH scavenged by the plant extract. The presence of antioxidant activity in both leaves and flowers showed that Clitoria ternatea and Vitex negundo Linn. have the potential to be an alternative source of natural antioxidants. In vivo study is needed for successful commercialization and to benefit both the food and pharmaceutical industries.

    Tamarind and pineapple fruit pulps and powders were assessed based on their physicochemical properties such as crude protein, crude fibre, fat, ash, moisture content, water activity (Aw), particle shape, particle size distribution, and density. Both of the fruit powders were subjected to a similar spray-drying process with the addition of 10% w/v of maltodextrin.     The purpose of this study was to investigate the preparation of formulated water- in-soybean oil-in-water emulsions by repeated premix membrane emulsification method using a cellulose acetate membrane. The effect of selective membrane emulsification process parameters (concentration of the emulsifiers, number of passes of the emulsions through the membrane and storage temperature) on the properties and stability of the developed emulsions were also investigated. 1, 3, 6, 8-pyrenetetrasulfonic acid tetrasodium salt (PTSA) was used as a hydrophilic model ingredient for the encapsulation of bioactive substances. W/O emulsions with 7 wt% (weight percentage) PGPR displays homogeneous and very fine dispersions, with the median diameter at 0.640 μm. Meanwhile, emulsions prepared by membrane emulsification (fine W/O/W) showed the highest stability at Tween 80 concentrations of 0.5 wt.% (weight percentage). It concluded that at 7 wt.% (weight percentage) PGPR concentration and 0.5 wt.% (weight percentage) Tween 80 concentrations, the most uniform particles with minimum mean size of oil drops (9.926 μm) were obtained after four passes through the membrane. Thus, cellulose acetate membrane can be used for preparing a stable W/O/W emulsions by repeated premix ME due to low cost and relatively easy to handle.

    This paper studies about water obtained from fish pond of fisheries research centre. Usual water
    quality parameters such as pH, COD, Turbidity and Ammonia content were analyzed before and
    after irradiation. Electron beam irradiation was used to irradiate the water with the dose 100 kGy,
    200 kGy and 300 kGy. Only high dose was applied on this water as only a limited amount of
    samples was supplied. All the parameters indicated a slight increase after irradiation except for the
    ammonia content, which showed a gradual decrease as irradiation dose increases. Sample
    condition was changed before irradiation in order to obtain more effective results in the following
    batch. The water sample from fisheries was diluted with distilled water to the ratio of 1:1.This was
    followed with irradiation at 100 kGy, 200 kGy and 300 kGy. The results still showed an increase in
    all parameters after irradiation except for ammonia content. For the following irradiation batch,
    the pH of the sample was adjusted to pH 4 and pH 8 before irradiation. For this sample the
    irradiation dose selected was only 100 kGy. A higher value of ammonia was observed for the
    sample with pH 4 after irradiation. Other parameters were almost the same as the first two batches

    Tanjung Selongor and Pantai Balok (State Pahang) are the only two places known for spawning activity of the Malaysian horseshoe crab - Tachypleus gigas (Müller, 1785) on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. While the former beach has been disturbed by several anthropogenic activities that ultimately brought an end to the spawning activity of T. gigas, the status of the latter remains uncertain. In the present study, the spawning behavior of T. gigas at Pantai Balok (Sites I-III) was observed over a period of thirty six months, in three phases, between 2009 and 2013. Every year, the crab's nesting activity was found to be high during Southwest monsoon (May-September) followed by Northeast (November-March) and Inter monsoon (April and October) periods. In the meantime, the number of female T. gigas in 2009-2010 (Phase-1) was higher (38 crabs) than in 2010-2011 (Phase-2: 7 crabs) and 2012-2013 (Phase-3: 9 crabs) for which both increased overexploitation (for edible and fishmeal preparations) as well as anthropogenic disturbances in the vicinity (sand mining since 2009, land reclamation for wave breaker/parking lot constructions in 2011 and fishing jetty construction in 2013) are responsible. In this context, the physical infrastructure developments have altered the sediment close to nesting sites to be dominated by fine sand (2.5Xφ ) with moderately-well sorted (0.6-0.7σφ), very-coarse skewed (-2.4SKφ), and extremely leptokurtic (12.6Kφ) properties. Also, increased concentrations of Cadmium (from 4.2 to 13.6 mg kg(-1)) and Selenium (from 11.5 to 23.3 mg kg(-1)) in the sediment, and Sulphide (from 21 to 28 µg l(-1)) in the water were observed. In relation to the monsoonal changes affecting sheltered beach topography and sediment flux, the spawning crabs have shown a seasonal nest shifting behaviour in-between Sites I-III during 2009-2011. However, in 2012-2013, the crabs were mostly restricted to the areas (i.e., Sites I and II) with high oxygen (5.5-8.0 mg l(-1)) and moisture depth (6.2-10.2 cm). In view of the sustained anthropogenic pressure on the coastal habitats on one hand and decreasing horseshoe crabs population on the other, it is crucial to implement both conservation and management measures for T. gigas at Pantai Balok. Failing that may lead to the loss of this final spawning ground on the east coast of P. Malaysia.
