METHODS: We used multiplex array technology to simultaneously detect and quantify 32 plasma analyte (22 reported analytes and 10 novel analytes) levels in 38 patients.
RESULTS: In our study, 16 analytes are found to be significantly deregulated (13 higher, 3 lower, Mann-Whitney U-test, P-value <0.005), where 5 of them have never been reported before in AML. We predicted a seven-analyte-containing multiplex panel for diagnosis of AML and, among them, MIF could be a possible therapeutic target. In addition, we observed that circulating analytes show five co-expression signatures.
CONCLUSIONS: Circulating analyte expression in AML significantly differs from normal, and follow distinct expression patterns.
METHODS: Two independent reviewers conducted a comprehensive search using Ovid MEDLINE published from years 1993 to 2016 and SCOPUS published from year 1985 to 2017 to screen for relevant studies. The main inclusion criteria included adult subjects, patients with suspected or confirmed signs of infection and relevant outcomes which looked into the role of sPLA2-IIA in detecting the presence of sepsis and bacterial infection in the subjects.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Four studies met the inclusion criteria. SPLA2-IIA was found to be effective in detecting the presence of sepsis and bacterial infection in adults. The levels of serum sPLA2-IIA also correlated well with the presence of sepsis and bacterial infection.
CONCLUSION: This systematic review highlights the role of sPLA2-IIA as a reliable tool to diagnose sepsis and bacterial infection in adult patients. Nonetheless, further studies should be done in the future to provide more compelling evidence on its application in the clinical setting.
OBJECTIVES: Evaluating group of selective oxidative stress markers as a tool in the management of asthma disease.
METHODS: In comparison with matched healthy controls, levels of the oxidant and antioxidant markers: lipid peroxidation malondialdehyde (MDA), Total glutathione (tGSH), Uric acid (UA), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Catalase (CAT) superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were assessed in serum and saliva of different asthma groups.
RESULTS: All oxidative markers in serum and saliva of asthma patients showed significant alterations from normal healthy controls (P 0.05).
CONCLUSION: Determination of the oxidative markers GPx, CAT, UA in serum or saliva can distinguish asthma from healthy states. The serum levels of UA and TAC are highly effective in monitoring asthma severity, while the salivary GPx, CAT, UA, MDA are beneficial in the management of childhood asthma. Discrimination of the age factor between asthma groups can be achieved by testing GPx, SOD, TAC in serum.
METHODS: Ethnic Malay, Chinese or Indian subjects aged 45-90 years old were recruited from Selangor, Malaysia from June 2016 to August 2018. Subjects with known medical conditions (e.g., bone disorders, malnutrition, immobilisation, renal impairment, hormonal disorders) and medications (including regular calcium or vitamin D supplements) that may affect CTX and P1NP were excluded. Additionally, subjects with osteoporosis or fracture on imaging studies were excluded. The blood samples were collected between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. in fasting state. The CTX and P1NP were measured on Roche e411 platform in batches.
RESULTS: The 2.5th-97.5th percentiles reference intervals (and bootstrapped 90%CI) for plasma CTX in men (n = 91) were 132 (94-175) - 775 (667-990) ng/L; in post-menopausal women (n = 132) 152 (134-177) - 1025 (834-1293) ng/L. The serum P1NP reference intervals in men were 23.7 (19.1-26.4) - 83.9 (74.0-105.0) µg/L, and in post-menopausal women, 25.9 (19.5-29.3) - 142.1 (104.7-229.7) µg/L.
CONCLUSION: The reference intervals for plasma CTX and serum PINP for older Malaysian men and post-menopausal women are somewhat different to other published studies from the region, emphasising the importance of establishing specific reference intervals for each population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study consisted of 45 subjects who were divided into 3 groups based on the severity of root resorption using radiographs: normal (RO), mild (RM), and severe (RS). DSPP in GCF samples was analyzed using both methods. Questionnaires were distributed to 30 orthodontists to evaluate future user acceptance.
RESULTS: The sensitivity and specificity of the kit were 0.98 and 0.8 respectively. The DSPP concentrations measured using ELISA were the highest in the RS group (6.33 ± 0.85 ng/mL) followed by RM group (3.77 ± 0.36 ng/mL) and the RO group had the lowest concentration (2.23 ± 0.55 ng/mL). The new kit portrayed similar results as the ELISA, the optical density (OD) values were the highest in the RS group (0.62 ± 0.10) followed by RM group (0.33 ± 0.03) and the RO group (0.19 ± 0.06). Methodology: The study was performed by analyzing the urine samples of the participants for methylhippuric acid, the established biomarker of xylene with the aid of high-performance liquid chromatography.
Results and Conclusion: The work hours per week of the occupationally exposed participants were statistically analyzed with that of the excretory values of the metabolites of xylene, and the P value was found to be highly significant. Various side effects of xylene including respiratory, dermatological, neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms were observed among the study groups.
AIM: The aim of the study was to determine the influence of various risk factors on ST2 levels in patients with HFpEF and diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of one hundred and thirty-four patients (74 females and 60 males, 51 diabetic patients and 83 patients without T2DM with HFpEF were examined. Duration of HF and T2DM, common risk factors, such as smoking, overweight, clinical examination, parameters of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and M235T polymorphism of ATG have been used. Multivariate backward stepwise cox regression analysis was performed in Statistica 10,0. p<0,05 was considered statistically significant.
RESULTS: ST2 level in patients with HFpEF associated with T2DM exceeded this value in patients with HFpEF without T2DM and was 23.26 ng/ml (18.5: 29.3) vs. 20.39 ng/ml (18.3: 24.6), respectively (p<0,05). To assess the cumulative effect of the studied factors on the ST2 level, we performed the Cox's stepwise multivariate regression analysis. Smoking, HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance), glucose, HbA1 and insulin levels were found to be the most significant factors influencing ST2 levels in patients with HF and T2DM, indicating a significant effect of DM type 2 on ST2 concentration.
CONCLUSIONS: Smoking, HOMA-IR, glucose, HbA1, and insulin levels can significantly affect ST2 levels in patients with T2DM and HFpEF.
METHODS: Hospitalized patients with dengue were enrolled and followed-up daily until discharge. Blood investigations included daily full blood counts and IPF measured using a haematology analyser.
RESULTS: In total, 287 patients with confirmed dengue were enrolled in this study, 25 of whom had severe dengue. All patients had a decreasing trend in platelet count in the first week of illness, concomitant with an increasing trend in the percentage of immature platelets to total platelets (IPF%) for more than 3 days prior to platelet recovery. IPF% was significantly increased in patients with severe dengue compared with patients with non-severe dengue on days 3-5 after the onset of fever. Reticulocyte count increased significantly in patients with severe dengue on day 5.
CONCLUSIONS: IPF can be utilized as an early recovery indicator of platelets in patients with dengue and thrombocytopenia.
