    Blood feeding and host-seeking behaviors of a mosquito play an imperative role in determining its vectorial capacity in transmitting pathogens. Unfortunately, limited information is available regarding blood feeding behavior of Anopheles species in Malaysia. Collection of resting Anopheles mosquitoes for blood meal analysis poses a great challenge especially for forest dwelling mosquitoes. Therefore, a laboratory-based study was conducted to evaluate the potential use of mosquitoes caught using human landing catch (HLC) for blood meal analysis, and subsequently to document blood feeding behavior of local Anopheles mosquitoes in Peninsular Malaysia. The laboratory-based experiment from this study revealed that mosquitoes caught using HLC had the potential to be used for blood meal analysis. Besides HLC, mosquitoes were also collected using manual aspirator and Mosquito Magnet. Overall, 47.4% of 321 field-caught Anopheles mosquitoes belonging to six species were positive for vertebrate host DNA in their blood meal. The most frequent blood meal source was human (45.9%) followed by wild boar (27.4%), dog (15.3%) and monkey (7.5%). Interestingly, only Anopheles cracens and Anopheles introlatus (Leucosphyrus Group) fed on monkey. This study further confirmed that members of the Leucosphyrus Group are the predominant vectors for knowlesi malaria transmission in Peninsular Malaysia mainly due to their simio-anthropophagic feeding behavior.

    INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are new smoking devices that have gained popularity recently. However, there is limited evidence on e-cigarette consumption in Malaysia. This study aims to determine the prevalence, risk factors and perception associated with e-cigarette use among those attending government hospitals and health clinics in Malaysia.

    METHODS: A cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted in seven public hospitals and health clinics in Malaysia, which were selected through a two-stage cluster sampling. A validated questionnaire was used to obtain data from the selected participants. Multivariable logistic regression was employed to determine the association between sociodemographics and perceptions of e-cigarette use.

    RESULTS: Almost three-quarters (73.6%; n=923/1254) of participants were aware of e-cigarettes and 13.2% (n=122/923) reported having ever used e-cigarettes. The prevalence was significantly higher among males (18.1%), smokers (21.4%), and younger age group 18-34 years (30.2%). Ever users showed favourable perceptions towards e-cigarettes compared to non-users (23.3% vs 30.14%, p<0.001). Multivariable logistic regression revealed that current smokers, younger age group and those possessing a positive perception towards e-cigarettes were likely to be ever users of e-cigarettes.

    CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that the awareness level of e-cigarettes was high amongst the population but the prevalence of ever e-cigarette user was moderate. Most of the ever e-cigarette users were male, current smokers, young adults and those with favourable perceptions towards e-cigarettes. Therefore, effective health educational activities regarding safe usage of e-cigarettes targeting those group identified in this study are warranted to reduce the negative outcomes from the use of this product.

    In this study, larvicidal activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesised using apple extract against fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti was determined. As a result, the AgNPs showed moderate larvicidal effects against Ae. aegypti larvae (LC50 = 15.76 ppm and LC90 = 27.7 ppm). In addition, comparison of larvicidal activity performance of AgNPs at high concentration prepared using two different methods showed that Ae. aegypti larvae was fully eliminated within the duration of 2.5 h. From X-ray diffraction, the AgNP crystallites were found to exhibit face centred cubic structure. The average size of these AgNPs as estimated by particle size distribution was in the range of 50-120 nm. The absorption maxima of the synthesised Ag showed characteristic Ag surface plasmon resonance peak. This green synthesis provides an economic, eco-friendly and clean synthesis route to Ag.

    BACKGROUND: The elimination of malaria in Southeast Asia has become more challenging as a result of rising knowlesi malaria cases. In addition, naturally occurring human infections with other zoonotic simian malaria caused by Plasmodium cynomolgi and Plasmodium inui adds another level of complexity in malaria elimination in this region. Unfortunately, data on vectors which are responsible for transmitting this zoonotic disease is very limited.

    METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted longitudinal studies to investigate the entomological parameters of the simian malaria vectors and to examine the genetic diversity and evolutionary pattern of their simian Plasmodium. All the captured Anopheles mosquitoes were dissected to examine for the presence of oocysts, sporozoites and to determine the parous rate. Our study revealed that the Anopheles Leucosphyrus Group mosquitoes are highly potential competent vectors, as evidenced by their high rate of parity, survival and sporozoite infections in these mosquitoes. Thus, these mosquitoes represent a risk of human infection with zoonotic simian malaria in this region. Haplotype analysis on P. cynomolgi and P. inui, found in high prevalence in the Anopheles mosquitoes from this study, had shown close relationship between simian Plasmodium from the Anopheles mosquitoes with its vertebrate hosts. This directly signifies the ongoing transmission between the vector, macaques, and humans. Furthermore, population genetic analysis showed significant negative values which suggest that both Plasmodium species are undergoing population expansion.

    CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: With constant microevolutionary processes, there are potential for both P. inui and P. cynomolgi to emerge and spread as a major public health problem, following the similar trend of P. knowlesi. Therefore, concerted vector studies in other parts of Southeast Asia are warranted to better comprehend the transmission dynamics of this zoonotic simian malaria which eventually would aid in the implementation of effective control measures in a rapidly changing environment.

    Background: One of the key importance of vegetable consumption is to obtain sufficient micronutrients, dietary fibre, and for the prevention of childhood obesity. Most Malaysian children did not meet the recommended intake of vegetable consumption, and this is especially vulnerable among the urban poor population due to food insecurity. Efforts are needed to promote vegetable consumption that fall short of the recommended intake level. Aim: This trial aims to examine the effectiveness of the "GrowEat" project, as a nutrition intervention programme integrated with home gardening activities to improve vegetable consumption among urban poor children in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Methods: This is a single-blinded parallel two-arm cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT) that include 134 children. Two zones in Kuala Lumpur will be randomly selected, and three low-cost housing flats from each zone will be selected as the intervention and control groups respectively. The trial is designed based on the social cognitive theory (SCT). Children from the intervention group (n = 67) will attend a 12-week programme, which consists of home garden-based activities, gardening and nutrition education session. Assessment will be conducted for both groups at three time points: baseline, post-intervention and follow-up phase at 3 months after the intervention. Conclusion: We anticipate positive changes in vegetable consumption and its related factors after the implementation of the "GrowEat" project. The current intervention may also serve as a model and can be extended to other urban poor population for similar interventions in the future to improve vegetable consumption, agriculture and nutrition awareness.

    Owing to the high potential application need in the aerospace and structural industry for honeycomb sandwich composite, the study on the flexural behaviour of sandwich composite structure has attracted attention in recent decades. The excellent bending behaviour of sandwich composite structures is based on their facesheet (FS) and core materials. This research studied the effect of woven glass-fibre prepreg orientation on the honeycomb sandwich panel. A three-point bending flexural test was done as per ASTM C393 standard by applying a 5 kN load on different orientation angles of woven glass-fibre prepreg honeycomb sandwich panel: α = 0°, 45° and 90°. The results show that most of the sandwich panel has almost the same failure mode during the three-point bending test. Additionally, the α = 0° orientation angle shows a higher maximum load prior to the first failure occurrence compared to others due to higher flexibility but lower stiffness. In addition, the woven glass-fibre prepreg orientation angle, α = 0°, has the maximum stress and flexural modulus, which directly depend upon the maximum load value obtained during the flexural test. In addition, the experimental results and analytical prediction for honeycomb sandwich deflection show good agreement. According to the result obtained, it is revealed that woven glass-fibre honeycomb sandwich panels with an α = 0° orientation is a good alternative compared to 45° and 90°, especially when better bending application is the main purpose. The final result of this research can be applied to enhance the properties of glass-fibre-reinforced polymer composite (GFRPC) cross-arm and enhance the existing cross-arm used in high transmission towers.

    Osteosarcoma is a common type of bone tumor, particularly prevalent in children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 25 who are experiencing growth spurts during puberty. Manual delineation of tumor regions in MRI images can be laborious and time-consuming, and results may be subjective and difficult to replicate. Therefore, a convolutional neural network (CNN) was developed to automatically segment osteosarcoma cancerous cells in three types of MRI images. The study consisted of five main stages. First, 3692 DICOM format MRI images were acquired from 46 patients, including T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and T1-weighted with injection of Gadolinium (T1W + Gd) images. Contrast stretching and median filter were applied to enhance image intensity and remove noise, and the pre-processed images were reconstructed into NIfTI format files for deep learning. The MRI images were then transformed to fit the CNN's requirements. A 3D U-Net architecture was proposed with optimized parameters to build an automatic segmentation model capable of segmenting osteosarcoma from the MRI images. The 3D U-Net segmentation model achieved excellent results, with mean dice similarity coefficients (DSC) of 83.75%, 85.45%, and 87.62% for T1W, T2W, and T1W + Gd images, respectively. However, the study found that the proposed method had some limitations, including poorly defined borders, missing lesion portions, and other confounding factors. In summary, an automatic segmentation method based on a CNN has been developed to address the challenge of manually segmenting osteosarcoma cancerous cells in MRI images. While the proposed method showed promise, the study revealed limitations that need to be addressed to improve its efficacy.

    BACKGROUND Tarlov cysts are rare, with a prevalence of 3.3% in the Asian population, and symptomatic cases are even rarer. Here, we report a case of a young woman with multiple Tarlov cysts presenting in primary care with severe low back pain. CASE REPORT A 23-year-old Malay woman presented to a primary care clinic with sudden-onset, severe, and persistent low back pain for 1 week, affecting her activities of daily living (ADL), especially as a medical student, as she could not stand for more than 10 minutes. There were no other associated symptoms or recent trauma prior to the onset of back pain. Examinations revealed para-vertebrae muscle tenderness and restricted movements at the L4/L5 lumbosacral spine. A plain radiograph of the lumbosacral spine showed sclerosis and erosion of the right pedicle at the L4/L5 levels. Tuberculosis and haematological tests were normal. A lumbosacral MRI of the spine was ordered and the patient was urgently referred to the orthopaedic spine team. The MRI confirmed the diagnosis of multiple Tarlov cysts, with the dominant cyst located at the S2 level. Her symptoms and ADL improved with conservative management. She is being monitored closely by the orthopaedic team and primary care physician. CONCLUSIONS This case highlights red flag symptoms, ie, sudden-onset, severe, and persistent low back pain, that warrant further investigation. Tarlov cysts should be considered as a differential diagnosis. Close monitoring is vital and early surgical intervention is indicated if symptoms worsen, to prevent potential irreversible nerve damage.

    In this work, mode-locked thulium-doped fiber lasers operating in the 2 µm wavelength region were demonstrated using tantalum aluminum carbide (Ta2AlC)-based saturable absorbers (SAs) utilizing the evanescent wave interaction. The Ta2AlC MAX Phase was prepared by dissolving the Ta2AlC powder in isopropyl alcohol and then deposited onto three different evanescent field-based devices, which were the tapered fiber, side-polished fiber, and arc-shaped fiber. Flame-brushing and wheel-polishing techniques were used to fabricate the tapered and arc-shaped fibers, respectively, while the side-polished fiber was purchased commercially. All three SA devices generated stable mode-locked pulses at center wavelengths of 1937, 1931, and 1929 nm for the tapered, side-polished, and arc-shaped fibers. The frequency of the mode-locked pulses was 10.73 MHz for the tapered fiber, 9.58 MHz for the side-polished fiber, and 10.16 MHz for the arc-shaped fiber. The measured pulse widths were 1.678, 1.734, and 1.817 ps for each of the three SA devices. The long-term stability of the mode-locked lasers was tested for each configuration over a 2-h duration. The lasers also showed little to no fluctuations in the center wavelengths and the peak optical intensities, demonstrating a reliable, ultrafast laser system.

    This study reports the occurrence of Blastocystis in water from two rivers, Sungai Congkak and Sungai Batu, located in recreational areas in Malaysia. This protozoan was detected in samples from both rivers with an average of 33.3% and 22.1%, respectively. It was detected highest at the downstream (73.8% and 33.8%) followed by midstream (17.5% and 25.0%) and upstream (8.8% and 7.5%) stations, with additionally higher detection during holidays (with average 47.5% and 30.8%) than week days (with average 19.2% and 13.3%), in both rivers, respectively. There was a strong association with the daily activities of locals and visitors, who came for water recreational activities, mainly located between midstream and downstream and was observed to be higher at Sungai Congkak. The detection of Blastocystis in these rivers' water implies that this protozoan could potentially be transmitted to humans by the waterborne route. Pearson correlation analysis showed that their occurrence was significantly correlated with faecal coliforms count; inconsistent correlation with dissolved oxygen, temperature and turbidity and no correlation with pH, conductivity and rainfall for both rivers. The correlation of coliforms and Blastocystis suggests the source of the Blastocystis in the water body is likely to be faecal.

    INTRODUCTION: Gynura procumbens has been shown to decrease blood pressure via inhibition of the angiotensinconverting enzyme. However, other mechanisms that may contribute to the hypotensive effect have not been studied.

    OBJECTIVES: To investigate the cardiovascular effects of a butanolic fraction of Gynura procumbens in rats.

    METHODS: Anaesthetized rats were given intravenous bolus injections of butanolic fraction at doses of 2.5-20 mg/kg in vivo. The effect of butanolic fraction on vascular reactivity was recorded in isolated rat aortic rings in vitro.

    RESULTS: Intravenous administrations of butanolic fraction elicited significant (p < 0.001) and dose-dependent decreases in the mean arterial pressure. However, a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the heart rate was observed only at the higher doses (10 and 20 mg/kg). In isolated preparations of rat aortic rings, phenylephrine (1 × 10⁻⁶ M)- or potassium chloride (8 × 10⁻² M)-precontracted endothelium-intact and -denuded tissue; butanolic fraction (1 × 10⁻⁶ - 1 × 10⁻¹ g/ml) induced similar concentration-dependent relaxation of the vessels. In the presence of 2.5 × 10⁻³ and 5.0 × 10⁻³ g/ml butanolic fraction, the contractions induced by phenylephrine (1 × 10⁻⁹-3 × 10⁻⁵ M) and potassium chloride (1 × 10⁻² - 8 × 10⁻² M) were significantly antagonized. The calcium-induced vasocontractions (1 × 10⁻⁴-1 × 10⁻²M) were antagonized by butanolic fraction concentration-dependently in calcium-free and high potassium (6×10⁻² M) medium, as well as in calcium- and potassium-free medium containing 1×10⁻⁶ M phenylephrine. However, the contractions induced by noradrenaline (1 × 10⁻⁶ M) and caffeine (4.5 × 10⁻² M) were not affected by butanolic fraction.

    CONCLUSION: Butanolic fraction contains putative hypotensive compounds that appear to inhibit calcium influx via receptor-operated and/or voltage-dependent calcium channels to cause vasodilation and a consequent fall in blood pressure.

    Introduction Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis is a communal problem in the sixth decade of life involving L4/L5 and L5/S1 levels. Lateral spinal stenosis is often underestimated because of no established relationship between the clinical symptoms and MRI findings. We conducted a study to establish an association between the degree of anatomical lateral stenosis, posterior disc height, and disc degeneration from MRI with the daily disability and pain severity for lateral lumbar spinal stenosis. Methods This was a cross-sectional study involving 121 patients with distinct clinical symptoms of lateral lumbar spinal stenosis evaluated from February 2018 to December 2019. The clinical data were evaluated using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was assessed qualitatively for the anatomical gradation of lateral spinal stenosis, the magnitude of posterior disc height, and the extent of disc degeneration. Statistical analysis for the correlation between posterior disc height and ODI and VAS scores was evaluated using Pearson's correlation test via SPSS version 23.0 (IBM Inc., Armonk, New York), and the association between the extent of lateral stenosis and disc degeneration on MRI with ODI and VAS scores was determined by the Fisher Exact Test via STATA version 14.0 (StataCorp LLC, College Station, Texas). The association was considered statistically significant with a P-value of less than 0.05. Results The analysis of 121 patients showed the mean age of the patients was 58.7 ± 7.1 years old. The number of female patients was higher compared to male patients, 52.9% and 47.1%, respectively. 97.5% of the patients were married or cohabiting, and 76.0% had an abnormal body mass index. The mean score of ODI and VAS was 62.2 ± 10.7% and 79.3 ± 8.6 respectively. 49.6% of the patient presented with a crippling disability with ODI assessment, while 59.5% presented with high pain intensity with VAS assessment. MRI assessment of anatomical grading lateral stenosis of L4/L5 level revealed that 45.5% of the patients had grade 2 lateral recess stenosis, 63.6% had grade 2 foraminal stenosis, and 44.6% had extraforaminal stenosis. L5/S1 level analysis showed that 43.0% had grade 2 lateral recess stenosis, 62.0% had grade 2 foraminal stenosis, and 29.8% had extraforaminal stenosis. 64.5% of patients had grade 4 disc degeneration of L4/L5 with mean posterior disc height of 7.0mm ±1.7mm while 59.5% had grade 4 disc degeneration of L5/S1 with mean posterior disc height of 6.3mm ±1.8mm. However, no statistically significant association between clinical symptoms and MRI findings was found.  Conclusions There was no significant association between the clinical symptoms of pain and disability and the MRI findings for the anatomical gradation of lateral spinal stenosis, the magnitude of posterior disc height, and the extent of disc degeneration. A comprehensive clinical evaluation remains essential for an accurate diagnosis, emphasizing the necessity of appropriately correlating MRI findings with their clinical significance.

    Alcohol is deleterious to physical and mental health as well as social well-being. This study aims to examine the prevalence of alcohol consumption and factors associated with its use among school-going Malaysian adolescents. The Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) 2012 employed 2-stage clustering design to Malaysian secondary school respondents aged 12 to 17 years. The prevalence of current alcohol usage was 8.9% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.8-10.07) overall, 11.2% (95% CI: 9.80-12.80) among males, and 23.4 (95% CI: 21.40-25.50) among Chinese students. Multivariate logistic regression showed that adolescents who had used alcohol were more likely to have used substance (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.39; 95% CI: 2.33-4.99), experienced injury (aOR = 1.53; 95% CI: 1.20-1.95), and engaged in sexual behaviors (aOR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.12-1.79), and fights (aOR = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.08-1.41). The current national policies on alcohol should be strengthened to curb alcohol consumption among adolescents.

    BACKGROUND: Malaria is a serious public health concern worldwide. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for controlling the disease's spread and avoiding severe health complications. Manual examination of blood smear samples by skilled technicians is a time-consuming aspect of the conventional malaria diagnosis toolbox. Malaria persists in many parts of the world, emphasising the urgent need for sophisticated and automated diagnostic instruments to expedite the identification of infected cells, thereby facilitating timely treatment and reducing the risk of disease transmission. This study aims to introduce a more lightweight and quicker model-but with improved accuracy-for diagnosing malaria using a YOLOv4 (You Only Look Once v. 4) deep learning object detector.

    METHODS: The YOLOv4 model is modified using direct layer pruning and backbone replacement. The primary objective of layer pruning is the removal and individual analysis of residual blocks within the C3, C4 and C5 (C3-C5) Res-block bodies of the backbone architecture's C3-C5 Res-block bodies. The CSP-DarkNet53 backbone is simultaneously replaced for enhanced feature extraction with a shallower ResNet50 network. The performance metrics of the models are compared and analysed.

    RESULTS: The modified models outperform the original YOLOv4 model. The YOLOv4-RC3_4 model with residual blocks pruned from the C3 and C4 Res-block body achieves the highest mean accuracy precision (mAP) of 90.70%. This mAP is > 9% higher than that of the original model, saving approximately 22% of the billion floating point operations (B-FLOPS) and 23 MB in size. The findings indicate that the YOLOv4-RC3_4 model also performs better, with an increase of 9.27% in detecting the infected cells upon pruning the redundant layers from the C3 Res-block bodies of the CSP-DarkeNet53 backbone.

    CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study highlight the use of the YOLOv4 model for detecting infected red blood cells. Pruning the residual blocks from the Res-block bodies helps to determine which Res-block bodies contribute the most and least, respectively, to the model's performance. Our method has the potential to revolutionise malaria diagnosis and pave the way for novel deep learning-based bioinformatics solutions. Developing an effective and automated process for diagnosing malaria will considerably contribute to global efforts to combat this debilitating disease. We have shown that removing undesirable residual blocks can reduce the size of the model and its computational complexity without compromising its precision.

    Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasitic fungi causing chronic diarrhea, particularly among immunocompromised patients. The current method used for diagnosis is based on conventional microscopy, which does not differentiate parasites at the species level. The present study was carried out to identify microsporidian species in immunocompromised patients. From March 2016 to March 2017, a total of 289 archived stool samples were examined microscopically for microsporidian spores using Gram-chromotrope Kinyoun (GCK) stain. Positive stool samples by microscopy were subjected to polymerase chain reaction and sequencing for species identification. Based on microscopy examination, the overall prevalence of microsporidian infections was 32.2% (93/289; 95% CI = 27.1-37.8). Of these stool samples, 45 samples were successfully amplified and confirmed as Enterocytozoon bieneusi. No Encephalitozoon intestinalis was detected. Accurate identification of species might help clinicians to decide appropriate management strategies as dissemination risks and treatment response vary for different species, hence improving the management of microsporidian infections.

    This article aims to develop a novel Artificial Intelligence-powered Internet of Things (AI-powered IoT) system that can automatically monitor the conditions of the plant (crop) and apply the necessary action without human interaction. The system can remotely send a report on the plant conditions to the farmers through IoT, enabling them for tracking the healthiness of plants. Chili plant has been selected to test the proposed AI-powered IoT monitoring and actuating system as it is so sensitive to the soil moisture, weather changes and can be attacked by several types of diseases. The structure of the proposed system is passed through five main stages, namely, AI-powered IoT system design, prototype fabrication, signal and image processing, noise elimination and proposed system testing. The prototype for monitoring is equipped with multiple sensors, namely, soil moisture, carbon dioxide (CO2) detector, temperature, and camera sensors, which are utilized to continuously monitor the conditions of the plant. Several signal and image processing operations have been applied on the acquired sensors data to prepare them for further post-processing stage. In the post processing step, a new AI based noise elimination algorithm has been introduced to eliminate the noise in the images and take the right actions which are performed using actuators such as pumps, fans to make the necessary actions. The experimental results show that the prototype is functioning well with the proposed AI-powered IoT algorithm, where the water pump, exhausted fan and pesticide pump are actuated when the sensors detect a low moisture level, high CO2 concentration level, and video processing-based pests' detection, respectively. The results also show that the algorithm is capable to detect the pests on the leaves with 75% successful rate.

    The adoption of pultruded glass fibre-reinforced polymer (pGFRP) composites as a substitute for traditional wooden cross-arms in high transmission towers represents a relatively novel approach. These materials were selected for their high strength-to-weight ratio and lightweight properties. Despite various studies focusing on structures improvement, there still have a significant gap in understanding the deformation characteristics of full-scale cross-arms under actual operational loads. Existing study often concentrate on small coupon scale and laboratory condition, leaving a gap in understanding how the cross-arm behavior in full-scale acting on actual weather condition. This study aims to investigate the load-deflection and long-term creep behavior of a pGFRP cross-arm installed in a 132 kV transmission tower. The pGFRP cross-arm was load-tested on a customized rig in an open environment. Using the cantilever beam concept, deflection was analyzed and compared to wood cross-arms. Finite element analysis validated results, and long-term deformation under high-stress loads was assessed. The pGFRP cross-arms showed lower deflection at working loads compared to Balau wood, due to the latter's higher elastic modulus and flexibility specifically at Point Y3, the critical issues necessitated reinforcement strategies. pGFRP cross-arms withstood higher bending stress, showing 32% less deflection under normal conditions and 15% less under broken wire conditions than Balau wood. Additionally, the creep strength of wood was 34% lower than that of pGFRP cross-arms. Besides that, the pGFRP cross-arm have highest elastic modulus than Balau-wood, shows that the composite cross-arm have better structural strength, resisting deformation and higher flexibility materials. Finite element analysis (FEA) confirmed these results with the relative error between them less than 1%. Consequently, the investigation into pGFRP cross-arm deformation behavior in this paper serves as a foundational framework for future research endeavors specifically for high transmission tower and other structural application.

    BACKGROUND: The symptoms of Long coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) are heterogeneous, creating uncertainty for employers regarding the diagnosis. The prevalence of Long Covid-19 in the workforce is also unknown. Furthermore, workers affected by Long Covid-19 encounter considerable difficulties in ensuring work safety and returning to their jobs due to this condition.

    AIMS: This review is aimed to identify the prevalence of Long Covid-19 in the workplace and to determine the various symptoms of Long Covid-19 experienced by the workers.

    METHODS: A meta-analysis was conducted to calculate the pooled estimates for the prevalence of Long Covid-19. Heterogeneity among the estimates was evaluated using the I² statistic.

    RESULTS: The pooled prevalence of Long Covid-19 among workers across the 11 studies was 38% (95% CI 23-56). A total of 43 symptoms associated with Long Covid-19 were identified in the workplace, with the top five symptoms being dyspnoea at moderate activity (51%, 95% CI 39-62), mental symptoms (38%, 95% CI 6-87), dyspnoea at mild activity (35%, 95% CI 25-47), fatigue (26%, 95% CI 3-78) and effort intolerance (24%, 95% CI 15-35).

    CONCLUSIONS: The review indicates a significant burden of long-lasting symptoms within the workforce. The top five reported symptoms of Long Covid-19 were dyspnoea during mild and moderate activities, mental symptoms, fatigue and effort intolerance.

    BACKGROUND & AIMS: To investigate the effects of probiotic in alleviation of stress in stressed adults, along our focus to identify and justify strain specificity on selected health benefits with a precisely targeted population.

    METHODS: This 12-weeks randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled study investigated the effects of a probiotic (Lactobacillus plantarum P8; 10 log CFU daily) on psychological, memory and cognition parameters in one hundred and three (P8 n = 52, placebo n = 51) stressed adults with mean age of 31.7 ± 11.1 years old. All subjects fulfilled the criteria of moderate stress upon diagnosis using the PSS-10 questionnaire.

    RESULTS: At the end of study, subjects on P8 showed reduced scores of stress (mean difference 2.94; 95% CI 0.08 to 5.73; P = 0.048), anxiety (mean difference 2.82; 95% CI 0.35 to 5.30; P = 0.031) and total score (mean difference 8.04; 95% CI 0.73 to 15.30; P = 0.041) as compared to placebo after 4-weeks, as assessed by the DASS-42 questionnaire. Although plasma cortisol levels were only marginally different between placebo and P8 (mean difference 3.28 ug/dl; 95% CI -7.09 to 0.52; P = 0.090), pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-γ (mean difference 8.07 pg/ml; 95% CI -11.2 to -4.93; P

    The brown widow spider (Latrodectus geometricus Koch, 1841) has colonised many parts of the world from its continent of origin, Africa. By at least 1841, the species had successfully established populations in South America and has more recently expanded its range to the southern states of North America. This highly adaptable spider has been far more successful in finding its niche around the world than its famous cousins, the black widow, Latrodectus mactans, found in the south-eastern states of North America, and the red-back, Latrodectus hasselti, found mostly in Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
