    BACKGROUND: Heat waves significantly impact ecosystems and human health, especially that of vulnerable populations, and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Besides being directly related to climate-sensitive health outcomes, heat waves have indirectly increased the burden on our health care systems. Although the existing literature examines the impact of heat waves and morbidity, past research has mostly been conducted in high-income countries (HICs), and studies on the impact of heat waves on morbidity in low- or middle-income countries (LMICs) are still scarce.

    OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the protocol for a systematic review that aims to provide evidence of the impact of heat waves on health care services in LMICs.

    METHODS: We will identify peer-reviewed studies from 3 online databases, including the Web of Science, PubMed, and SCOPUS, published from January 2002 to April 2023, using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Quality assessment will be conducted using the Navigation Guide checklist. Key search terms include heatwaves, extreme heat, hospitalization, outpatient visit, burden, health services, and morbidity.

    RESULTS: This systematic review will provide insight into the impact of heat waves on health care services in LMICs, especially on emergency department visits, ambulance call-outs, hospital admissions, outpatient department visits, in-hospital mortality, and health care operational costs.

    CONCLUSIONS: The results of this review are anticipated to help policymakers and key stakeholders obtain a better understanding of the impact of heat waves on health care services and prioritize investments to mitigate the effects of heat waves in LMICs. This entails creating a comprehensive heat wave plan and ensuring that adequate infrastructure, capacity, and human resources are allocated in the health care sector. These measures will undoubtedly contribute to the development of resilience in health care systems and hence protect the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

    Recent years have witnessed an in-depth proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems linked to Industry 4.0 technology. The increasing rate of IoT device usage is associated with rising security risks resulting from malicious network flows during data exchange between the connected devices. Various security threats have shown high adverse effects on the availability, functionality, and usability of the devices among which denial of service (DoS) and distributed denial of service (DDoS), which attempt to exhaust the capacity of the IoT network (gateway), thereby causing failure in the functionality of the system have been more pronounced. Various machine learning and deep learning algorithms have been used to propose intelligent intrusion detection systems (IDS) to mitigate the challenging effects of these network threats. One concern is that although deep learning algorithms have shown good accuracy results on tabular data, not all deep learning algorithms can perform well on tabular datasets, which happen to be the most commonly available format of datasets for machine learning tasks. Again, there is also the challenge of model explainability and feature selection, which affect model performance. In this regard, we propose a model for IDS that uses attentive mechanisms to automatically select salient features from a dataset to train the IDS model and provide explainable results, the TabNet-IDS. We implement the proposed model using the TabNet algorithm based on PyTorch which is a deep-learning framework. The results obtained show that the TabNet architecture can be used on tabular datasets for IoT security to achieve good results comparable to those of neural networks, reaching an accuracy of 97% on CIC-IDS2017, 95% on CSE-CICIDS2018 and 98% on CIC-DDoS2019 datasets.

    Based on the data of the Chinese A-share listed firms in China Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 2014 to 2021, this article explores the relationship between common institutional investors and the quality of management earnings forecasts. The study used the multiple linear regression model and empirically found that common institutional investors positively impact the precision of earnings forecasts. This article also uses graph neural networks to predict the precision of earnings forecasts. Our findings have shown that common institutional investors form external supervision over restricting management to release a wide width of earnings forecasts, which helps to improve the risk warning function of earnings forecasts and promote the sustainable development of information disclosure from management in the Chinese capital market. One of the marginal contributions of this paper is that it enriches the literature related to the economic consequences of common institutional shareholding. Then, the neural network method used to predict the quality of management forecasts enhances the research method of institutional investors and the behavior of management earnings forecasts. Thirdly, this paper calls for strengthening information sharing and circulation among institutional investors to reduce information asymmetry between investors and management.

    INTRODUCTION: Melioidosis is a deadly endemic disease in northern Australia and Southeast Asia, including Sabah, Malaysia, which is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. It contributes to high fatality rates, mainly due to misdiagnosis leading to the wrong treatment being administered to the patients. Local epidemiology and data on clinical features could assist clinicians during diagnosis and treatment. However, these details are still scarce, particularly in Sabah.

    METHODS: A retrospective study of 246 culture-confirmed melioidosis cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Sabah, Malaysia was performed between 2016 and 2018. The epidemiological data and clinical and laboratory findings were extracted and analysed.

    RESULTS: The annual incidence of culture-confirmed melioidosis cases was estimated to be 4.97 per 100,000 people. The mean age of the patients was 50±15 years. Males and members of the Kadazan-Dusun ethnic group accounted for the majority of the melioidosis cases. The odds ratio analysis indicated that bacteraemic melioidosis in this region was significantly associated with fever (76%), and patients having at least one underlying illness (43%), including diabetes mellitus (32%). Sixty-eight patients (28%) succumbed to melioidosis. Contrary to what is known regarding factors that promote bacteraemic melioidosis, neither patients with fever nor patients with at least one comorbid disease, including diabetes mellitus, were significantly associated with death from melioidosis. There was no statistically significant difference between patients without comorbidities (24, 27%) and those with at least one comorbid disease (26, 25%), including diabetes mellitus (18, 23%). The odds ratios indicate that melioidosis mortality in this region is related to patients showing respiratory organ-associated symptoms (29%), bacteraemia (30%), and septic shock (47%). Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates in this study were highly susceptible to ceftazidime (100%), imipenem (100%), and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (98%).

    CONCLUSIONS: Information obtained from this study can be used by clinicians to recognise individuals with the highest risk of acquiring melioidosis, estimate an accurate prognosis, and provide effective treatment for melioidosis patients to reduce death from melioidosis.

    SIGNIFICANCE: Systemic thromboembolic complications are well documented to be associated with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), however, there has been a growing number of reports regarding ocular complications stemming from COVID-19 vaccinations. This case illustrates a clear temporal and possible causal relationship of COVID-19 vaccination with an ocular microvascular disorder, namely retinal vein occlusion.

    PURPOSE: To report a case of inferotemporal branch retinal vein occlusion after mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination.

    CASE REPORT: A middle-aged female developed right eye central scotoma two days after COVID-19 vaccination. She had transient hypertension during the first two days post-vaccination. A decrease in visual acuity (6/18) was documented. Initial retinal findings included flame-shaped hemorrhages and cotton wool spots along inferotemporal branch retinal vessels. Optical coherence tomography revealed right eye cystoid macular edema. Laboratory investigation revealed mildly raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein . Other systemic examinations were unremarkable. She was treated for right eye inferotemporal branch retinal vein occlusion with cystoid macular edema and was given intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor monthly in three doses. Her visual acuity improved to 6/6 with resolved cystoid macular edema.

    CONCLUSIONS: This case illustrates a clear temporal and possible causal relationship between COVID-19 vaccination and retinal vein occlusion. Post vaccination transient hypertension, or the immunological and inflammatory response to the vaccine may have contributed to the venous occlusive event in this case. Eye care providers should remain aware of this possibility. The effectiveness of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth for the treatment of macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion was demonstrated in this patient.

    Carbon-integrated binary metal oxide semiconductors have gained prominence in the last decade as a better material for photocatalytic wastewater treatment technology. In this regard, this research describes the investigation of the binary metal oxide TiO2@Fe3O4 embedded on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets synthesized through a combination of sol-gel, chemical precipitation, and Hummer's processes. Besides, the catalyst is applied for the photocatalytic degradation of organic chlorophenol pollutants. The characterized diffraction results showed the peak broadening of the rGO-TiO2@Fe3O4 composite formed with tetragonal and cubic structures having small crystallite sizes. The TEM observation shows an enormous miniature of TiO2@Fe3O4 nanospheres spread on the folded 2D-rGO nanosheets with a large BET surface area. The XPS result holds the mixed phases of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3. Finally, the catalyst demonstrated a low band gap with extended light absorption towards visible light irradiation. The synergistic interactions between Fe3+ and Fe2+ improved the visible light activity due to the incorporation of rGO, and also possessed good recycling capacity. The increased mobility of electrons at the interfaces of TiO2 and Fe3O4 due to the mixing of rGO results in the separation of charge carriers by elevating the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of chlorophenol.

    BACKGROUND: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration revised the labels of sodium-glucose transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in December 2015 to inform users regarding the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). As more drugs of this class are approved and their indications are expanded, this serious adverse effect has been increasingly reported.

    OBJECTIVE: This review evaluated observational studies to inform the prevalence of SGLT2-inhibitor-associated DKA compared with other antihyperglycemic agents.

    METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in PubMed and EMBASE until 19 July 2022 (PROSPERO: CRD42022385425). We included published retrospective cohort active comparator/new user (ACNU) and prevalent new user studies assessing SGLT2-inhibitor-associated DKA prevalence in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) against active comparators. We excluded studies which lacked 1:1 propensity score matching. The JBI Checklist for Cohort Studies guided the risk-of-bias assessments. Meta-analysis was conducted based on the inverse variance method in R software.

    RESULTS: Sixteen studies with a sample of 2,956,100 non-unique patients met the inclusion criteria. Most studies were conducted in North America (n = 9) and adopted the ACNU design (n = 15). Meta-analysis of 14 studies identified 33% higher DKA risk associated with SGLT2 inhibitors (HR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.14-1.55, p < 0.01). Meta-regression analysis identified the study location (p = 0.02), analysis principle (p < 0.001), exclusion of chronic comorbidities (p = 0.007), and canagliflozin (p = 0.04) as significant moderator variables.

    CONCLUSIONS: Despite limitations related to heterogeneity, generalisability, and misclassification, the results of this study show that SGLT2 inhibitors increase the prevalence of DKA among adult T2DM patients in the real world. The findings supplement evidence from randomised controlled trials and call for continued vigilance.

    OBJECTIVES: To systematically synthesize the views of community-dwelling Asians on Advance care planning and to summarize the factors and reasons affecting their uptake of ACP.

    DESIGN: Mixed-methods systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42018091033).

    SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Asian adults (≥18 years old) living in the community globally.

    METHODS: Medline (Ovid), Web of Science, CINAHL (EBSCO), Open Grey, and Google Scholar were searched from inception to June 30, 2022. Qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods studies reporting on the views of non-seriously ill community-dwelling Asian adults on ACP or the factors influencing their ACP uptake were included. Secondary research, studies not published in English, or studies not available as full text were excluded. Two independent teams of researchers extracted data, assessed methodologic quality, and performed the data analysis. Data analysis was conducted using the multistep convergent integrated approach based on Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for mixed-methods systematic review.

    RESULTS: Fifty-eight studies were included. Non-seriously ill community-dwelling Asians were willing to engage in ACP (46.5%-84.4%) although their awareness (3.1%-42.9%) and uptake of ACP remained low (14.0%-53.4%). Background factors (sociodemographic factors, and health status, as well as experience and exposure to information) and underlying beliefs (attitude toward ACP, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) were found to affect their uptake of ACP. A conceptual framework was developed to facilitate a proper approach to ACP for this population.

    CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: A flexible approach toward ACP is needed for non-seriously ill community-dwelling Asians. There is also a need to raise end-of-life and ACP literacy, and to explore ways to narrow the gap in the expectations and implementation of ACP so that trust in its effective execution can be built.

    Uveal melanoma (UVM) remains the leading intraocular malignancy in adults, with a poor prognosis for those with metastatic disease. Tryptophan metabolism plays a pivotal role in influencing cancerous properties and modifying the tumor's immune microenvironment. In this study, we explore the relationship between tryptophan metabolism-related gene (TRMG) expression and the various features of UVM, including prognosis and tumor microenvironment. Our analysis included 143 patient samples sourced from public databases. Using K-means clustering, we categorized UVM patients into two distinct clusters. Further, we developed a prognostic model based on five essential genes, effectively distinguishing between low-risk and high-risk patients. This distinction underscores the importance of TRMGs in UVM prognostication. Combining TRMG data with gender to create nomograms demonstrated exceptional accuracy in predicting UVM patient outcomes. Moreover, our analysis reveals correlations between risk assessments and immune cell infiltrations. Notably, the low-risk group displayed a heightened potential response to immune checkpoint inhibitors. In conclusion, our findings underscore the dynamic relationship between TRMG expression and various UVM characteristics, presenting a novel prognostic framework centered on TRMGs. The deep connection between TRMGs and UVM's tumor immune microenvironment emphasizes the crucial role of tryptophan metabolism in shaping the immune landscape. Such understanding paves the way for designing targeted immunotherapy strategies for UVM patients.

    Electrogenic microorganisms serve as important biocatalysts for microbial electrochemical sensors (MESes). The electrical signal produced is based on the rate of electron transfer between the microbes and electrodes, which represents the biotoxicity of water. However, existing MESes require complex and sophisticated fabrication methods. Here, several low-cost and rapid surface modification strategies (carbon powder-coated, flame-oxidized, and acid-bleached) have been demonstrated and studied for biosensing purposes. Surface-modified MESe bioanodes were successfully applied to detect multiple model pollutants including sodium acetate, ethanol, thinner, and palm oil mill effluent under three different testing sequences, namely, pollutant incremental, pollutant dumping, and water dilution tests. The carbon powder-coated bioanode showed the most responsive signal profile for all the three tests, which is in line with the average roughness values (Ra) when tested with atomic force microscopy. The carbon powder-coated electrode possessed a Ra value of 0.844, while flame-oxidized, acid-bleached, and control samples recorded 0.323, 0.336, and 0.264, respectively. The higher roughness was caused by the carbon coating and provided adhesive sites for microbial attachment and growth. The accuracy of MESe was also verified by correlating with chemical oxygen demand (COD) results. Similar to the sensitivity test, the carbon powder-coated bioanode obtained the highest R2 value of 0.9754 when correlated with COD results, indicating a high potential of replacing conventional water quality analysis methods. The reported work is of great significance to showcase facile surface modification techniques for MESes, which are cost-effective and sustainable while retaining the biocompatibility toward the microbial community with carbon-based coatings.

    A young male in his early 30s presented with spontaneous left eye redness for three months associated with blood-stained eye discharge. There was no history of trauma, blood dyscrasias, or anticoagulant intake. On examination, visual acuity was normal in both eyes. An anterior segment examination of the left eye showed subconjunctival hemorrhage with a fleshy bright red conjunctival mass hidden in the inferotemporal fornix. Other parts of the ocular examination including the contralateral eye were unremarkable. Upon further inquiry, the patient revealed a history of a retroviral disease diagnosed eight years ago but had not pursued treatment. Systemic examination revealed a raised non-pigmented lesion of the tongue and a painless purplish plaque at the back. Investigations showed a high viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) load and confirmed the Kaposi sarcoma of the conjunctiva, tongue, and skin; cryptococcal meningitis; smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis; and late latent syphilis. He was comanaged by multidisciplinary teams. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was commenced. Treatment was a challenge considering the simultaneous presence of malignancy and a serious fungal infection of the brain in an immunosuppressed patient. Fortunately, three months post treatment, he showed remarkable improvement as there was almost a complete resolution of conjunctival Kaposi sarcoma. This case revealed an unusual presentation of Kaposi sarcoma affecting the conjunctiva, which could have been mistaken for simple subconjunctival hemorrhage in a young patient without informed comorbidity.

    Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)-producing bacteria represent a powerful synthetic biology chassis for waste bioconversion and bio-upcycling where PHAs can be produced as the final products. In this study, we present a seamless plasmid construction for orthogonal expression of recombinant PET hydrolase (PETase) in model PHA-producing bacteria P. putida and C. necator. To this end, this study described seamless cloning and expression methods utilizing SureVector (SV) system for generating pSV-Ortho-PHA (pSVOP) expression platform in bioengineered P. putida and C. necator. Genetic parts specifically Trc promoter, pBBR1 origin of replication, anchoring proteins and signal sequences were utilized for the transformation of pSVOP-based plasmid in electrocompetent cells and orthogonal expression of PETase in both P. putida and C. necator. Validation steps in confirming functional expression of PETase activity in corresponding PETase-expressing strains were also described to demonstrate seamless and detailed methods in establishing bioengineered P. putida and C. necator as whole-cell biocatalysts tailored for plastic bio-upcycling.•Seamless plasmid construction for orthogonal expression in PHA-producing bacteria.•Step-by-step guide for high-efficiency generation of electrotransformants of P. putida and C. necator.•Adaptable methods for rapid strain development (Design, Build, Test and Learn) for whole-cell biocatalysis.

    BACKGROUND: There is a little knowledge on the extent to which healthcare providers understand and accept the professional recommendations and appropriate dosing strategy regarding metformin XR.

    OBJECTIVES: To evaluate UAE community pharmacists' knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) concerning metformin XR.

    METHODS: This is a cross-sectional research study conducted amongst licensed community pharmacists. The survey took place via a questionnaire and physical interviews were held. The survey used in this study included questions on demographics and questions on the participants' attitudes, knowledge and practices concerning metformin XR. The factors influencing KAP regarding metformin XR were examined via simple logistic regression analysis.

    RESULTS: Threehundred fifty-three (n = 353) participants were recruited in the study. Independent pharmacies constituted 57.5% of this study sample and 42.5% were chain pharmacies. The average knowledge score about metformin XR tablets was 42.5% with a confidence interval (CI) of 95% [37.3%, 47.4]. Better knowledge scores on metformin XR tablets was observed in respondents aged ⩾40 years (OR 2.97, 95% CI 1.63-5.4), having greater than 10 years in terms of experience (OR 2.28; 95% CI 1.25-4.16) and pharmacist graduated from Regional or international universities (OR 2.08; 95% CI 1.34-3.24). About 78% (n = 275) of the participants believed that metformin XR tablets have better efficacy and 63.2% (n = 233) indicated that metformin IR was associated with greater adverse effects.

    CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a distinct gap in knowledge, attitude and practice pertaining to metformin XR among community pharmacists in the UAE. The community pharmacists need to enhance their practice by receiving accurate and reliable data to support their decision-making on the prescribing of metformin XR. The implementation of novel guidelines and evidence dissemination strategies may help bridge this gap.

    OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is preventable, yet it remains a common childhood disease. As children are dependent on their parents for oral health care, oral health education for parents is essential to ensure they understand the risk factors and consequences of dental caries and their role in its prevention. This study aims to explore parents' oral health education needs to enable the development and provision of a tailored online oral health education module.

    METHODS: Online focus group discussions were conducted among Malaysian parents to gather information about the content, layout and presentation of oral health information parents sought for the provision of oral health care for their children. Video recordings were transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was performed using an inductive approach.

    RESULTS: In total, 24 parents participated in the discussions and 4 main themes were uncovered. The first theme was perceived information needs related to dental caries, oral health care and the importance of deciduous teeth. The second theme was parents' preferred information resources which were social media, dentists, mobile phone applications and medical personnel. Thirdly, information delivery format and specific characteristics were recommended. The final theme was challenges and barriers faced in maintaining oral health due to parental constraints, child behaviour and external factors.

    CONCLUSION: Parents' profound feedback and experiential standpoint stipulate the need for the development and delivery of a comprehensible and visually engaging oral health education module by healthcare professionals via social media to enable access to evidence-based information consistently.

    Vascular remodelling is an adaptive response to physiological and pathological stimuli that leads to structural and functional changes in the vascular intima, media, and adventitia. Pathological vascular remodelling is a hallmark feature of numerous vascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, abdominal aortic aneurysm, pulmonary hypertension and preeclampsia. Autophagy is critical in maintaining cellular homeostasis, and its dysregulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including vascular diseases. However, despite emerging evidence, the role of autophagy and its dual effects on vascular remodelling has garnered limited attention. Autophagy can exert protective and detrimental effects on the vascular intima, media and adventitia, thereby substantially influencing the course of vascular remodelling and its related vascular diseases. Currently, there has not been a review that thoroughly describes the regulation of autophagy in vascular remodelling and its impact on related diseases. Therefore, this review aimed to bridge this gap by focusing on the regulatory roles of autophagy in diseases related to vascular remodelling. This review also summarizes recent advancements in therapeutic agents targeting autophagy to regulate vascular remodelling. Additionally, this review offers an overview of recent breakthroughs in therapeutic agents targeting autophagy to regulate vascular remodelling. A deeper understanding of how autophagy orchestrates vascular remodelling can drive the development of targeted therapies for vascular diseases.

    Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is a unique class of medications that has been widely utilized for the treatment of cancer. HCQ plays a dichotomous role by inhibiting autophagy induced by the tumor microenvironment (TME). Preclinical studies support the use of HCQ for anti-cancer therapy, especially in combination with conventional anti-cancer treatments since they sensitize tumor cells to drugs, potentiating the therapeutic activity. However, clinical evidence has suggested poor outcomes for HCQ due to various obstacles, including non-specific distribution, low aqueous solubility and low bioavailability at target sites, transport across tissue barriers, and retinal toxicity. These issues are addressable via the integration of HCQ with nanotechnology to produce HCQ-conjugated nanomedicines. This review aims to discuss the pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic and antitumor properties of HCQ. Furthermore, the antitumor performance of the nanoformulated HCQ is also reviewed thoroughly, aiming to serve as a guide for the HCQ-based enhanced treatment of cancers. The nanoencapsulation or nanoconjugation of HCQ with nanoassemblies appears to be a promising method for reducing the toxicity and improving the antitumor efficacy of HCQ.

    Successful face recognition is important for social interactions and public security. Although some preliminary evidence suggests that anodal and cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) might modulate own- and other-race face identification, respectively, the findings are largely inconsistent. Hence, we examined the effect of both anodal and cathodal tDCS on the recognition of own- and other-race faces. Ninety participants first completed own- and other-race Cambridge Face Memory Test (CFMT) as baseline measurements. Next, they received either anodal tDCS, cathodal tDCS or sham stimulation and finally they completed alternative versions of the own- and other-race CFMT. No difference in performance, in terms of accuracy and reaction time, for own- and other-race face recognition between anodal tDCS, cathodal tDCS and sham stimulation was found. Our findings cast doubt upon the efficacy of tDCS to modulate performance in face identification tasks.

    OBJECTIVE: Elderly individuals are among the age groups with the highest risk of suicide. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced isolation and resulted in an increased risk of depression, hopelessness, and perceived burdensomeness among the elderly, thereby increasing the risk of suicide.

    METHODS: This is a case report of an elderly single retired school principal with obsessive-compulsive personality traits who developed depression with psychotic symptoms after being isolated following the movement control order (MCO) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The social isolation led to feelings of loneliness and hopelessness. The patient's depressive symptoms worsened after he developed physical illnesses, such as eye floaters, that affected his daily activities. This caused him to have suicidal ideation to the extent that he attempted suicide by ingesting 90 mL of pesticide. Two weeks prior to the attempt, he updated his will and asked his friend to keep it. After the suicide attempt, he vomited and had diarrhea and epigastric pain. He called his friend, who brought him to the hospital emergency room (ER). He was resuscitated and subsequently admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). After being medically stabilized, he was transferred to the psychiatric ward, where further treatment was administered for his depression. His depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation improved after he was administered antidepressants and psychotherapy.

    RESULTS: The impact of the COVID pandemic has led to a surge in mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. The elderly are among the highest-risk groups of individuals to contract or die of COVID-19 infection, and they are also the most likely to develop mental health issues related to the pandemic. Furthermore, the risk of death by suicide is highest in this age group due to physical illness, social isolation, and the lack of a support system. This case also highlights the need for awareness of suicidal ideation screening among non-medical healthcare professionals and religious organizations to avoid the treatment gap.

    CONCLUSION: It is essential to enhance suicide risk assessment and management among the elderly after the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a highly regarded evidence-based psychotherapy that aims to alleviate the suffering of clients and improve their interpersonal functioning. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of IPT in depressive, bipolar and eating disorders. IPT also focuses on grief and loss as a problem area to help clients address and process their grief symptoms, leading them to reach a phase of finding meaning. However, traumatic grief which is characterized by someone who has both symptoms of trauma and grief can further complicate treatment. As for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), IPT can be a choice of treatment by addressing perceived isolation and emotional dysregulation through mobilizing adequate social support. This case study highlights the efficacy of IPT in treating complicated grief with traumatic experiences caused by the loss of a loved one during the COVID-19 pandemic, without undergoing exposure-based therapy. The treatment course consisted of 12 sessions scheduled twice weekly, and the client received antidepressant medication augmented with antipsychotic medication. After undergoing IPT, the client experienced an improvement in symptoms, gradual recovery of functional disability, and more meaningful interpersonal relationships. The case study presented provides evidence to suggest that IPT is a promising treatment approach for individuals struggling with trauma related to grief.
