METHODS: This study systematically reviewed articles and reports related to human malaria from 2013 to 2022 published in international and Chinese databases. Data on malaria (i.e. number of cases, Plasmodium spp., diagnostic method, country of acquisition, provinces with high risk of re-introduction and transmission) were collected and synthesized, then summarized using descriptive statistics.
RESULTS: Overall, 24 758 cases of malaria (>99.5% laboratory confirmed, > 99.2% imported, 0.5% fatal) were reported in China from 2013 to 2022, with a downward trend over the years (4128 cases in 2013 compared to 843 cases in 2022; χ2 trend P = 0.005). The last locally acquired case was reported in 2017. Plasmodium falciparum (65.5%) was the most common species identified, followed by P. vivax (20.9%) and P. ovale (10.0%). Two P. knowlesi cases were also identified in 2014 and 2017 in returned travellers from Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively. The most common countries for malaria acquisition were Ghana, Angola and Myanmar. Plasmodium vivax was mainly detected in returned travellers from Myanmar, while P. falciparum and P. ovale were detected in travellers from sub-Saharan Africa. Imported cases were mainly reported in Yunnan, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Guangxi, Shandong, Zhejiang and Henan provinces, where large numbers of Chinese people travel overseas for work.
CONCLUSION: Returned travellers from malaria-endemic countries pose a significant risk of malaria re-introduction to China. Travel medicine should be strengthened to improve the capacity and accessibility of both pre- and post-travel services, including malaria prophylaxis and prompt diagnosis of illness in returned travellers.
METHODS: Five databases (Cochrane (CENTRAL), MEDLINE (via PubMed), CINAHL (via EBSCO), PEDro, and Scopus) were searched using database-specific search terms from inception to August 2023. Inclusion criteria included studies reporting the prevalence of PAD in Indian adults diagnosed with T2DM of either or both sexes, employing ankle brachial index measurements with a Doppler test or sphygmomanometer. The risk of bias was evaluated using the JBI checklist, and the certainty of evidence was determined via the GRADE approach.
RESULTS: Twenty-three articles met the inclusion criteria which comprised of 196,883 individuals with T2DM aged between 30 and 70 years from nine states and one union territory. Utilizing a random effects model, the meta-analysis revealed that the pooled prevalence of PAD among individuals with T2DM in India was 18 % (95 % confidence interval: 10-28 %), with statistically significant heterogeneity observed between studies (I2 = 100 %, P
METHODS: We used pre-COVID-19 pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) data (2007-2018) to fit SARIMA, Prophet, and LSTM models, assessing their ability to predict PTB incidence trends. These models were then applied to compare the predicted PTB incidence patterns with actual reported cases during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023), using deviations between predicted and actual values to reflect the impact of COVID-19 countermeasures on PTB incidence.
RESULTS: Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, PTB incidence in China exhibited a steady decline with strong seasonal fluctuations, characterized by two annual peaks-one in March and another in December. These seasonal trends persisted until 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a significant reduction in PTB cases, with actual reported cases falling below the predicted values. The disruption in PTB incidence appears to be temporary, as 2023 data indicate a gradual return to pre-pandemic trends, though the incidence rate remains slightly lower than pre-COVID levels. Additionally, we compared the fitting and forecasting performance of the SARIMA, Prophet, and LSTM models using RMSE (root mean squared error), MAE (mean absolute error), and MAPE (mean absolute percentage error) indexes prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. We found that the Prophet model had the lowest values for all three indexes, demonstrating the best fitting and prediction performance.
CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a temporary but significant impact on PTB incidence in China, leading to a reduction in reported cases during the pandemic. However, as pandemic control measures relax and the healthcare system stabilizes, PTB incidence patterns are expected to return to pre-COVID-19 levels. The Prophet model demonstrated the best predictive performance and proves to be a valuable tool for analyzing PTB trends and guiding public health planning in the post-pandemic era.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to explore the literature on molecular genetics of obesity in Malaysia. Specifically, we sought to characterize existing studies, identify the genetic determinants of obesity, and assess their association with obesity predisposition in the population.
METHODS: This scoping review followed the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute and used the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist as its guiding framework. Searches were conducted using electronic databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, filtering for human studies published until March 2024. Eligible studies included peer-reviewed articles on the Malaysian population irrespective of age or sex. This review excluded review articles, book chapters, non-peer-reviewed conference proceedings, gray literature, and preclinical studies, and the reference lists of the retrieved studies were manually examined to ensure thorough inclusion. The articles were subjected to a 2-stage screening process (title/abstract and full text) conducted by 2 reviewers to assess eligibility. Eligible articles were then extracted following a data extraction framework and organized into a charting table. Only studies investigating the genetics of obesity in Malaysian populations were included.
RESULTS: As of March 2024, our extensive search strategy has yielded 572 records. After removing 153 duplicates, 419 records were screened by title and abstract, resulting in 47 selected for full-text review. Of these, 34 were chosen for data extraction and detailed analysis. These studies predominantly involved participants from major ethnic groups (Malay, Chinese, and Indian) recruited from local health centers and university communities. The articles primarily explored the relationship between specific gene variants and obesity or obesity-related health parameters. This ongoing research is expected to be completed with a comprehensive scoping review by April 2025.
CONCLUSIONS: This review provides valuable insights into the genetic determinants of obesity in Malaysia, despite limitations such as no quality appraisal being conducted for the included studies and the search strategy being restricted to selected databases, potentially omitting relevant studies. However, this review ensured reliability and reproducibility by adhering to the Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Ultimately, this study advances the understanding of local research and sets the foundation for future molecular genetic studies to improve obesity risk prediction and management in Malaysia's multiethnic population.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The research questions will guide the scoping review. In stage 1, peer-reviewed publications from PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus will be searched using predefined search terms related to community-based approaches and VBDs in the SEA region, English, Indonesian and Malay published between 2012 and 2022. In stage 2, the references from relevant articles will be screened for eligibility. In stage 3, eligible articles will be charted in Microsoft Excel to facilitate the review process, and studies will be characterised based on the investigated diseases; this review will also highlight the methodological context of these studies. In stage 4, a thematic analysis will be conducted to derive meaningful findings from the dataset relevant to the research inquiry, followed by writing the results in stage 5. This scoping review aims to be the first to explore community participation in VBD control in the SEA population, providing valuable insights for future research and stakeholders involved in disease control.
ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This scoping review does not require ethical approval because the methodology synthesises information from available articles. This review is planned for dissemination in academic journals, conference presentations and shared with stakeholders as part of knowledge sharing among those involved in VBD control.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adjust to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020; this study met all the requirements and was up-todate. The search approach was online publications between 2013 and 2023 in Pubmed and SagePub. It was decided not to consider review pieces that had already been published and half done. The STATA 18th version was used for metaanalysis.
RESULTS: Our search results included 370 PubMed and 149 SagePub articles. Since 2013, 134 PubMed and nine SagePub articles have been obtained, and seven studies have met the criteria.
CONCLUSION: Disorders of intestinal motility in the aganglionic segment and accumulation of faeces disrupt the balanced microbiota population, which are factors of preoperative HAEC. Major congenital anomalies and low birth weight worsen pre-operative HAEC. Pre-operative HAEC can continue and affect the post-operative. Constipation and fecal incontinence are still the main challenges after HSCR surgery.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted through PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library up until August 10, 2024. The eligibility criteria focused on observational studies that evaluated hospitalization rates among mpox cases, distinguishing between HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals. Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used for evaluating study quality. The meta-analysis used a random-effects model to accommodate expected study heterogeneity using R software (V. 4.4).
RESULTS: The search yielded 686 records, with 14 studies meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria after screenings and full-text assessments. The pooled analysis revealed a 56.6% increased risk of hospitalization among HIV-positive mpox cases compared to HIV-negative individuals (95% CI: 18.0-107.7%). Notable heterogeneity (I² = 76%) was observed, likely reflecting variations in study settings and methodologies. Sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of these findings, and no significant publication bias was detected (Egger's test p-value = 0.733).
CONCLUSION: HIV infection is associated with a statistically significant increased risk of hospitalization in mpox cases. There is a critical need for integrated care and enhanced surveillance, especially in populations with high HIV prevalence. Our findings emphasize the importance of ongoing research to better understand HIV and mpox co-infection and to refine management strategies for this vulnerable group. Future studies should focus on long-term outcomes and the effectiveness of various management strategies across different healthcare settings.
METHODS: This study conducted the PRISMA-ScR scoping review and formulated a set of research questions to identify current trends in vector-borne diseases in Borneo. These questions aim to identify which diseases have been studied, what geographical areas have been covered by the research, how the One Health approach-encompassing human, animal and environmental factors-is integrated, and what gaps and challenges exist in addressing these diseases.
RESULTS: A total of 2241 references were screened for eligibility and 117 articles were selected for review. The majority of the materials focused on mosquitoes and malaria, and the One Health elements focused mainly on humans.
CONCLUSIONS: This review has identified the most and least studied vector-borne diseases and highlighted some of the gaps in knowledge and research on vector-borne diseases on the island of Borneo. Future studies should particularly focus on other neglected diseases such as Zika, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, filariasis and tick-borne diseases. In addition, advanced surveillance systems will be developed to improve early detection and response specifically for remote regions where vector-borne diseases are endemic or emerging.
METHODS: The demographic and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 cases and the district's vaccination coverage were described. Vaccination coverage was plotted against COVID-19 cases on the epidemic curve. The χ2 test was used to examine the differences between the vaccination status of COVID-19 cases and severity category, hospitalization status and mortality.
RESULTS: In Seremban District, there were 65 879 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in 2021. The data revealed that the 21-30-year age group had the highest proportion of cases (16 365; 24.8%), the majority of cases were male (58.3%), and most cases were from the subdistrict of Ampangan (23.1%). The majority of cases were Malaysian. Over half (53.5%) were symptomatic, with fever (29.8%) and cough (22.8%) being the most frequently reported symptoms. METHODS: This scoping review intended to investigate published studies on the current prevalence and incidence of oral cancer in LMICs. The review was conducted applying the search words "Oral Cancer" and "Mouth neoplasm" as the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) major topic and "Epidemiology" and ("prevalence" OR "incidence") as the MeSH subheading; the search was supplemented by cross-references. Included studies met the following criteria: original studies, reporting of prevalence or incidence rates, population-based studies, studies in English language and studies involving humans.
RESULTS: The sample sizes ranged from 486 to 101,761 with 213,572 persons included. Buccal mucosa is one of the most common sites of oral cancer, associated with the widespread exposure to chewing tobacco. The incidence is likely to rise in the region where gutkha, pan masala, pan-tobacco and various other forms of chewing tobacco are popular.
CONCLUSION: This review contributes to useful information on prevalence and incidence estimates of oral cancer in LMICs.
