    An investigation on the application of thermosensitive core-shell Fe3O4@PNIPAM nanogels in enhanced oil recovery was successfully performed. Here, the unique core-shell architecture was fabricated by conducting the polymerization at the surface of 3-butenoic acid-functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles and characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), 1H NMR, vibration sample magnetometer (VSM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). According to the results, this core-shell structure was beneficial for achieving the desired high viscosity and low nanofluid mobility ratio at high temperatures, which is essential for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) application. The results demonstrated that the nanogels exhibited a unique temperature-dependent flow behavior due to the PNIPAM shell's ability to transform from a hydrated to a dehydrated state above its low critical solution temperature (LCST). At such conditions, the nanogels exhibited a significantly low mobility ratio (M = 0.86), resulting in an even displacement front during EOR and leads to higher oil production. Based on the result obtained from sand pack flooding, about 25.75% of an additional secondary oil recovery could be produced when the nanofluid was injected at a temperature of 45 °C. However, a further increase in the flooding temperature could result in a slight reduction in oil recovery due to the precipitation of some of the severely aggregated nanogels at high temperatures.

      Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are of special interest in treating landfill leachate as they are the most promising procedures to degrade recalcitrant compounds and improve the biodegradability of wastewater. This paper aims to refresh the information base of AOPs and to discover the research gaps of AOPs in landfill leachate treatment. A brief overview of mechanisms involving in AOPs including ozone-based AOPs, hydrogen peroxide-based AOPs and persulfate-based AOPs are presented, and the parameters affecting AOPs are elaborated. Particularly, the advancement of AOPs in landfill leachate treatment is compared and discussed. Landfill leachate characterization prior to method selection and method optimization prior to treatment are necessary, as the performance and practicability of AOPs are influenced by leachate matrixes and treatment cost. More studies concerning the scavenging effects of leachate matrixes towards AOPs, as well as the persulfate-based AOPs in landfill leachate treatment, are necessary in the future.

    Bronchopulmonary lophomoniasis is rare but immunocompromised individual is susceptible to this infection. We reported a case of bronchopulmonary lophomoniasis in a Malaysian female with systemic lupus erythromatosus. She presented with productive cough, shortness of breath and high-grade fever for 2 weeks. Physical examination revealed bronchial sound and crackles over the left lung with, reduced expansion and dull percussion in lower left lobe. Chest radiography showed consolidation of the left lung. Routine laboratory tests revealed general low cell count. Blood and sputum culture were negative. Bronchoalveolar lavage stain and culture for bacterial and fungal were negative. Bronchoalveolar lavage for Lophomonas blattarum was positive. Patient was treated with antiprotozoal drug, metronidazole. All her clinical problems resolved and she was discharged 14 days after admission.

    Various amendments are used to reduce the phytoavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soils, but recently the use of biochar is receiving serious attention. In this study, two particle sizes of an oil palm empty fruit bunch biochar (EFBB); <50 µm (F-EFBB) and >2 mm (C-EFBB) were applied at either 0, 0.5, or 1% (w/w) to soils contaminated with either Cd or Pb and the phytoavailability of these metals by mustard plants grown on the soils was evaluated. Results revealed that the application of EFBB at 1% significantly increased plant growth parameters as compared with the control in Cd-soil. However, there was no significant effect of EFBB application rate on plant growth parameters in Pb-soil. There was a significant difference in the concentrations of Cd and Pb in the plant root and shoot between soils receiving different particle sizes of EFBB. The treatment of 1% F-EFBB gave the lowest concentration of the Cd concentration in the shoot (115.200 mgkg-1) and Pb concentration in the root and shoot (4196.000 and 78.467 mgkg-1, respectively) as compared with the other treatments. Therefore, F-EFBB application at high rates can be recommended for reducing the phytoavailability of Cd and Pb in contaminated soils.

    Varying the β-carotene (0.1-0.3 g kg(-1)) and whey protein isolate (WPI) (2-20 g kg(-1)) concentrations in an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion influenced the partitioning and stability of β-carotene upon 30 d storage at 25 and 40 °C. The total β-carotene in the emulsion was extracted with a solvent and quantified using UV/visible spectroscopy. The β-carotene in oil phase was obtained using in situ Raman micro-spectroscopy. The β-carotene in the aqueous phase was obtained by difference. Increasing β-carotene concentration resulted in increased partitioning of β-carotene into the aqueous phase whereas increasing WPI concentration had the opposite effect. With all freshly made emulsions, there was a higher proportion of β-carotene found in the oil phase. At the end of the storage period, the higher proportion and concentration of β-carotene was in the aqueous phase. This suggested that oxidation of β-carotene occurred faster in the oil phase and that WPI in the aqueous phase protected β-carotene against oxidation. This work informs the formulation of protein-based emulsions for the delivery of β-carotene.

    BACKGROUND: Lung cancer images require large memory storage and transmission bandwidth for sending the data. Compressive sensing (CS), as a method with a statistical approach in signal sampling, provides different output patterns based on information sources. Thus, it can be considered that CS can be used for feature extraction of compressed information.

    METHODS: In this study, we proposed a novel texture extraction-based CS for lung cancer classification. We classify three types of lung cancer, including adenocarcinoma (ACA), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and benign lung cancer (N). The classification is carried out based on texture extraction, which is processed in 2 stages, the first stage to detect N and the second to detect ACA and SCC.

    RESULTS: The simulation results show that two-stage texture extraction can improve accuracy by an average of 84%. The proposed system is expected to be decision support in assisting clinical diagnosis. In terms of technical storage, this system can save memory resources.

    CONCLUSIONS: The proposed two-step texture extraction system combined with CS and K- Nearest Neighbor has succeeded in classifying lung cancer with high accuracy; the system can also save memory storage. It is necessary to examine the complexity of the proposed method so that it can be analyzed further.

    BACKGROUND: Maternal depression may affect child feeding practices and growth.

    OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between child feeding practices and current maternal depression with malnutrition among young children in a rural community.

    METHODS: This is a case-control study consisting of 52 Malay mothers of malnourished children (case) and 50 Malay mothers of well-nourished children (control) in Kuala Langat, Selangor, Malaysia. Structured questionnaires on child feeding practices and Beck Depression Inventory: Second Edition questionnaire were distributed to mothers.

    RESULTS: Depressed mothers stopped exclusive breastfeeding (2.8 ± 2.1 months) earlier than non-depressed mothers (3.7 ± 2.0 months; p = 0.045). Binary logistic regression analysis showed current maternal depression was a primary contributor associated with risk of malnutrition in children (adjusted odds ratio: 2.5, 95% confidence interval: 1.08-6.09), and followed by the number of children (adjusted odds ratio: 1.3, 95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.77).

    CONCLUSION: Mothers who experienced depression were twice as likely to have malnourished children. Each additional child in the family will increase the risk of malnutrition by 1.3 times. Maternal depression is associated with child feeding practices and malnutrition among young children in the studied population. Preliminary screening to identify depression symptoms should be conducted to all mothers as early as the first trimester to prevent the incidence of malnutrition in children.

    BACKGROUND: Chrononutrition studies how biological rhythms and nutrition are associated with human health. However, a validated assessment in Malaysia is still absent.

    OBJECTIVES: To create a translation of the Chrononutrition Profile Questionnaire (CPQ), test its validity and reliability, and determine the general chrononutrition behaviors among Malaysian young adults.

    METHODS: The Malay-CPQ was distributed to respondents through online platforms (n = 110), and data analyses were performed. The data were analyzed for their validity using content validity index (CVI) and face validity index (FVI), whereas intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to determine test-retest reliability.

    RESULTS: Our results showed both CVI and FVI of Malay-CPQ were 1, indicating excellent content translation, while the ICC values ranged from moderate to good (0.50-0.90). The Cronbach α values for all items ranged from moderate to good (0.50-0.90), and the Bland-Altman analysis showed a P value >0.05, indicating agreement of the item between repeated measurements. The chrononutrition behaviors among Malaysian young adults presented fair to good scores for all behavior patterns: eating window, breakfast skipping, evening eating, night eating, and largest meal, except evening latency, being mostly at the poor score (>80% responses).

    CONCLUSIONS: The Malay-CPQ is a valid and reliable tool to assess the Malaysian chrononutrition profile. However, further testing on Malay-CPQ should be conducted in a different setting in Malaysia for cross-validation studies.

    Boronic-acid-modified nanomaterials have inspired significant research interest owing to their unique biocompatibility and excellent reversible interaction with diol groups containing saccharides, protein, DNA, and other related glucose compounds. However, the different sources and methods change the application of nanomaterials. Thus, surface-functionalized nanomaterials are of interest as one of the best ways to improve the application of the biomedical field. In this mini-review, we summarize recent studies on boronic-acid-modified nanomaterials, based on the carbon dot group and graphene oxides, which have been used in the fields of bioimaging, biosensing, antiviral inhibitors, etc. Moreover, the multivalent interaction on boronic-acid-modified materials has become the main key improvement for targeting treatment in the future. We mainly focused on any previously reported papers for synergistic future opportunities of superior biomedical applications of carbon dots (CDs) in the management and diagnostics of nanomedicine fields.

    BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety is a significant problem worldwide that may affect patients' surgical outcome. By using a simple and reliable tool such as the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS), anaesthesiologists would be able to assess preoperative anxiety adequately and accurately.

    OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Malay version of APAIS (Malay-APAIS), and assess the factors associated with higher anxiety scores.

    METHODS: The authors performed forward and backward translation of APAIS into Malay and then tested on 200 patients in the anaesthetic clinic of University Malaya Medical Centre. Psychometric analysis was performed with factor analysis, internal consistency and correlation with Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-state).

    RESULTS: A good correlation was shown with STAI-state (r = 0.59). Anxiety and need for information both emerged with high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.93 and 0.90 respectively). Female gender, surgery with a higher risk and need for information were found to be associated with higher anxiety scores. On the other hand, previous experience with surgery had lower need for information.

    CONCLUSION: The Malay-APAIS is a valid and reliable tool for the assessment of patients' preoperative anxiety and their need for information. By understanding and measuring patient's concerns objectively, the perioperative management will improve to a much higher standard of care.

    In this work, gene expression in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is analyzed with the goal of selecting the most attributed genes and performing classification. The objective was achieved by utilizing a combination of various statistical filters and a wrapper-based geometric binary particle swarm optimization-support vector machine (GBPSO-SVM) algorithm. The utilization of different filters was accentuated by incorporating a mean and median ratio criterion to remove very similar genes. The results showed that the most discriminative genes that were identified in the first and last selection steps included the presence of a repetitive gene (CAPS2), which was assigned as the gene most highly related to ASD risk. The merged gene subset that was selected by the GBPSO-SVM algorithm was able to enhance the classification accuracy.

    BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a risk factor for prostate cancer (PCa) progression. Thus, this life-threatening disease demands a proactive treatment strategy. Andrographis paniculata (AP) is a promising candidate with various medicinal properties. However, the bioactivity of AP is influenced by its processing conditions especially the extraction solvent.

    OBJECTIVE: In the present study, bioassay-guided screening technique was employed to identify the best AP extract in the management of MetS, PCa, and MetS-PCa co-disease in vitro.

    METHODS: Five AP extracts by different solvent systems; APE1 (aqueous), APE2 (absolute methanol), APE3 (absolute ethanol), APE4 (40% methanol), and APE5 (60% ethanol) were screened through their phytochemical profile, in-vitro anti-cancer, anti-obese, and anti-hyperglycemic properties. The best extract was further tested for its potential in MetS-induced PCa progression.

    RESULTS: APE2 contained the highest andrographolide (1.34 ± 0.05 mg/mL) and total phenolic content (8.85 ± 0.63 GAE/gDW). However, APE3 has the highest flavonoid content (11.52 ± 0.80 RE/gDW). APE2 was also a good scavenger of DPPH radicals (EC50 = 397.0 µg/mL). In cell-based assays, among all extracts, APE2 exhibited the highest antiproliferative activity (IC50 = 57.5 ± 11.8 µg/mL) on DU145 cancer cell line as well as on its migration activity. In in-vitro anti-obese study, all extracts significantly reduced lipid formation in 3T3-L1 cells. The highest insulin-sensitizing and -mimicking actions were exerted by both APE2 and APE3. Taken together, APE2 showed collectively good activity in the inhibition of PCa progression and MetS manifestation in vitro, compared to other extracts. Therefore, APE2 was further investigated for its potential to intervene DU145 progression induced with leptin (10-100 ng/mL) and adipocyte conditioned media (CM) (10% v/v). Interestingly, APE2 significantly diminished the progression of the cancer cell that has been pre-treated with leptin and CM through cell cycle arrest at S phase and induction of cell death.

    CONCLUSION: In conclusion, AP extracts rich with andrographolide has the potential to be used as an alternative to ameliorate PCa progression induced by factors highly expressed in MetS.

    Increasing risk of antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria has led to the exploration of alternative antibiotics derived from leaves of medicinal plants such as the fig (Ficus carica L.). The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extract of fig leaves grown under Malaysian tropical environment against pathogenic bacteria linked to antibiotic resistance namely the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherechia coli. The methanolic extraction was performed by using soxhlet apparatus. The disc diffusion method was used to measure inhibition zone diameter on the Mueller-Hinton agar plate. Staphylococcus aureus displayed the highest diameter of inhibition zone against the extract at concentration of 900 mg/ml whilst Escherechia coli displayed the highest diameter of inhibition zone against both the 100% crude extract and 700 mg/ml, respectively. This study therefore highlighted the potential of developing alternative antibiotics derived from the methalonic extract of locally grown fig plant.

    We aim to report a rare case of colonic perforation post percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and its conservative management.We report a 63-year-old Malay, thalassemia carrier male who underwent an uncomplicated left PCNL fora left renal stone. On second postoperative day, clinically evidence of subcutaneous emphysema. Serial CXR imaging confirmed presence of air under diaphragm. Small colonic perforation was diagnosed which subsequently developed localized collection retroperitoenally. He was successfully treated with non-operative management including intravenous antibiotic, surgical drainage and good nutrional has successfully support healed the collection. Serial CT renal protocol showed a healed retroperitoneal collection and patient made a good clinical recovery.PCNL has promising stone clearance rate. However, it carries complications. A rare yet important complication; colonic perforation is a serious complication that if detected earlier, good clinical recovery can be achieved conservatively.

    Introduction: Data on water and sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) intake
    among young adults in Malaysia is sparse. This study aimed at measuring the
    intake of plain water and SSB among undergraduate students in a Malaysian
    university and examine its association with body mass index (BMI). Methods:
    A total of 376 undergraduate students aged 18-30 years were recruited. A selfadministered questionnaire was used to determine the SSB consumption pattern.
    The questionnaire consisted of five sections that included the background of the
    participants, knowledge about SSB, SSB preferences, frequency and portion size.
    Results: 23.9% of subjects in this study were overweight. Almost all of the subjects
    took outside food (93.1%) and drink (74.2%). The highest daily consumption was
    plain water (92.3%), with a majority drinking more than two cups at each intake.
    Caffeinated drinks (coffee or tea) were the most popular SSB among the students
    (18.4%). Most students (79.7%) did not consume SSB on a daily basis. A significant

    High frequency oscillating ventilation (HFOV) provides a rescue therapy for patients with refractory hypoxaemia in severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). HFOV utilizes high mean airway pressures to maintain an open lung and low tidal volumes at a high frequency that allows for adequate ventilation while at the same time preventing alveolar overdistension. This seems to be an ideal lung protective ventilation strategies to prevent ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI)2. We reported a case of severe extrapulmonary ARDS secondary to acute lymphoblastic leukaemia responding to the use of HFOV.

    Spirituality and mental adjustment have been widely adopted as coping strategies among women with breast cancer. Little information was available locally on the use of spirituality and mental adjustment as coping mechanisms to fight breast cancer. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess spirituality and mental adjustment as coping strategies and its association with socio demographic data on 216 women with breast cancer. The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being (FACIT-Sp) and Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MAC) Scales were used to assess spirituality and mental adjustment. Negative correlation between spiritual well-being and helplessness/hopelessness (r=-0.690; p=0.000), anxious preoccupation (r=-0.277; p=0.000) and avoidance (r=-0.235; p=0.000) and positive correlation between spiritual well-being and fighting spirit (r=0.668; p=0.000) were identified. Socio-demographic factors such as race (p=0.000), religion (p=0.000), academic qualification (p=0.004) and type of surgery (p=0.016) revealed significant relationship with spiritual well-being.     Sepsis causes high mortality and morbidity. Static lactate concentration and early lactate clearance are cited to be a predictor for sepsis survival. This study examined the clinical utility of static lactate concentration and early lactate clearance within the first six hours of admission in Emergency Department (ED) to predict 28-day mortality rate in sepsis patients. Patients who presented with sepsis, severe sepsis or septic shock and admitted to ED of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre were recruited. Blood lactate concentrations were measured upon admission (H0), at 1st hour (H1) and 6th hour (H6), respectively. Either standard treatment of sepsis or early goal directed therapy was initiated according to sepsis severity. A follow-up report was conducted at 28 days via telephone call, e-mail or case notes.     The particleboards were fabricated using Rhizophora spp. wood particles with particles size less than 74 μm. The corn starch was used as a bio-adhesive in the fabrication of Rhizophora spp. particleboards. The corn starch bonded particleboards were fabricated at 5% and 10% corn starch based on dry mass of Rhizophora spp. wood particles. The measurement of mass attenuation coefficients of the particleboards were made at low and intermediate photon energies. The mass attenuation coefficient at low photon energy was measured using X-ray fluorescent (XRF) configuration based on attenuation of Kα1 X-ray energies between 16.59 and 25.26 keV given by niobium, molybdenum, palladium and tin metal plates. The calculated mass attenuation coefficients of samples were compared to the theoretical values mass attenuation coefficients of water calculated using the photon cross-section database (XCOM). The results showed that mass attenuation coefficients of 10% corn starch added Rhizophora spp. particleboards were in good agreement of water within 7.96 and 4.94% for 5% and 10% corn starch Rhizophora spp. Particleboards, respectively compared to 14.57 and 16.16% in binderless Rhizophora spp. particleboards and raw Rhizophora spp. wood, respectively.

    This study evaluates the ImageJ software as dosimetric tools for analyzing the film dosimeter in high energy photons and electrons. The percentage depth dose of photons of 6 and 10 MV and electrons of 6 and 9 MeV were measured using the Gafchromic EBT2 film dosimeter. The films were scanned and analyzed using the Verisoft software and ImageJ. The beam profiles at nominal photon and electron beam parameters were also evaluated using the two methods. The PDD measured in ImageJ at high energy photons were in good agreement within 1% percentage of discrepancy at all depths in comparison to the Verisoft software. The PDD measured in ImageJ at high energy electrons also showed good agreement to Verisoft software within 8% percentage of discrepancy at all depths. The measured flatness of beam profiles at Dmax, R50, R80 and R90 in ImageJ were also in good agreement to Verisoft software with flatness value between 4 and 8%. The results indicated the suitability of ImageJ software as dosimetric tool for analyzing EBT2 film dosimeter at high energy photon and electrons.
