    This study was conducted to investigate the nutritional status of the rural population in Malaysia, especially women and children. A total of 262 women aged 18 and over and 183 children aged 2-6 years were selected using multistage cluster sampling from four locations in rural areas. It was found that the prevalence of malnutrition among children 2-6 years old ranged between 25.5% in the Malays Felda settlement scheme to 80% in the Orang Asli settlement. Malnutrition was associated with worm infestations, bottle feeding and early weaning. More than 30% of Orang Asli women were malnourished compared to less than 15% of Malay Felda settlement women. On the other hand, Malay women in the land settlement scheme had a higher risk of developing overweight and diabetes. Goitre was found among 11.5% of children; however, no cretinism was found. Breast feeding was still a common practice among rural mothers, but inadequate health education tended to reduce the duration of breast feeding and increased early weaning. Upgrading women's status in the rural areas will ultimately improve the nutritional and health status of the children and community as a whole.

    Two solid biopolymer electrolytes (SBEs) systems of carboxymethyl cellulose doped ammonium chloride (CMC-AC) and propylene carbonate plasticized (CMC-AC-PC) were prepared via solution casting technique. The ionic conductivity of SBEs were analyzed using electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in the frequency range of 50 Hz-1 MHz at ambient temperature (303K). The highest ionic conductivity of CMC-AC SBE is 1.43 × 10(-3)S/cm for 16 wt.% of AC while the highest conductivity of plasticized SBE system is 1.01 × 10(-2)S/cm when added with 8 wt.% of PC. TGA/DSC showed that the addition of PC had increased the decomposition temperature compared of CMC-AC SBE. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra showed the occurrence of complexation between the SBE components and it is proved successfully executed by Gaussian software. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated that amorphous nature of SBEs. It is believed that the PC is one of the most promising plasticizer to enhance the ionic conductivity and performance for SBE system.

    We investigated the relationship of the maxillary central incisors to the incisive papilla in wearers of complete dentures. First, image analyzer software was used to examine the relationship of the midpoint of the incisive papilla to the labial surface of the maxillary central incisors on occlusal photographs of 120 maxillary casts from dentate Malaysian adults. Then, an Alma denture gauge was used to identify the position of the labial surface of the maxillary central incisors in relation to the midpoint of the incisive papilla in complete dentures from 51 patients who requested replacement dentures at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. The mean incisor distance to the incisive papilla in dentate adults was 9.59 ± 1.00 mm, while the mean incisor distance to the incisive papilla in complete dentures was 6.34 ± 1.87 mm. Thus, in our sample of edentulous patients, the anterior teeth in complete dentures were positioned approximately 3 mm closer to the incisive papilla, as compared with the position of the central incisors in natural dentition, and did not duplicate the position of the natural anterior teeth.

    This paper presents a new evolutionary approach called the hybrid evolutionary artificial neural network (HEANN) for simultaneously evolving an artificial neural networks (ANNs) topology and weights. Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) with strong global search capabilities are likely to provide the most promising region. However, they are less efficient in fine-tuning the search space locally. HEANN emphasizes the balancing of the global search and local search for the evolutionary process by adapting the mutation probability and the step size of the weight perturbation. This is distinguishable from most previous studies that incorporate EA to search for network topology and gradient learning for weight updating. Four benchmark functions were used to test the evolutionary framework of HEANN. In addition, HEANN was tested on seven classification benchmark problems from the UCI machine learning repository. Experimental results show the superior performance of HEANN in fine-tuning the network complexity within a small number of generations while preserving the generalization capability compared with other algorithms.

    Elevated temperatures can induce changes in red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC) and platelet (PLT) counts. Ultrasound heating during obstetric scans has the potential to increase body temperature owing to the phenomenon of absorption. We conducted a study to determine the thermal effects of prenatal ultrasound on RBCs, hemoglobin concentration (Hb), WBCs and PLTs in young rabbits. We selected 69 rabbits that were 1 month of age and 73 that were 5 months of age, and allocated them to four groups. The control group consisted of four pregnant does that were allowed to have a full term delivery without any ultrasound exposure. The experimental groups were subjected to one-time ultrasound exposure for 30, 60 and 90 min in the middle of each gestational stage accordingly. RBCs and Hb showed significant reductions in the experimental groups of 1- and 5-month-old rabbits (P<0.05). In addition, WBCs and PLTs yielded significant differences in the 1-month group that were not observed in the 5-month group (P>0.05). The highest values recorded were those of the WBCs of 1-month-old subjects that received 90 min of exposure at the second stage of gestation. The PLTs were the lowest values recorded in 1-month-old subjects following 90 min of ultrasound exposure at the third stage of gestation. These findings suggest that hematological fluctuations during the early stages of postnatal life persisted until 1 month of age and recovered thereafter, as the subjects progressed into adulthood. Therefore, ultrasound heating can cause significant, yet reversible effects on the hematological parameters of rabbits.

    Scanty information exists pertaining to the length-weight relationship (LWR) and length-length relationship (LLR) parameters of longsnouted catfish, Plicofollis argyropleuron in lotic systems throughout the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. It is vital to reveal these biological properties of P. argyropleuron in Kuala Muda and Merbok estuary for future management and to increase knowledge about this fish stocks. The fish samples were randomly collected in the estuary area of Kuala Muda and Merbok, Kedah for 10 months from March 2009 to December 2009. The values of the exponent b in the LWR equations (W = aL(b) ) were approximately 3, indicating an isometric growth with high correlation coefficient (r(2)). The value of LLR (r(2)>0.9) indicated that they are highly significant and highly correlated. These parameters are essential for evaluating the relative condition of fish and species managements as well as their fisheries and stock assessment.

    Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transference number measurement (TNM) techniques were applied to investigate the complexation, structural, and ionic transport properties of and the dominant charge-carrier species in a solid biopolymer electrolyte (SBE) system based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) doped with ammonium fluoride (NH4F), which was prepared via a solution casting technique. The SBEs were partially opaque in appearance, with no phase separation. The presence of interactions between the host polymer (CMC) and the ionic dopant (NH4F) was proven by FT-IR analysis at the C-O band. XRD spectra analyzed using Origin 8 software disclose that the degree of crystallinity (χc%) of the SBEs decreased with the addition of NH4F, indicating an increase in the amorphous nature of the SBEs. Analysis of the ionic transport properties reveals that the ionic conductivity of the SBEs is dependent on the ionic mobility (μ) and diffusion of ions (D). TNM analysis confirms that the SBEs are proton conductors.

    Addition of doping materials can possibly enhance the ionic conduction of solid polymer electrolyte (SPE). In this work, a new SPE using 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose (2-HEC) incorporated with different ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) composition was prepared via solution casting method. Studies of structural properties were conducted to correlate the ionic conductivity of 2-HECNH4NO3SPE using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Encouraging result was obtained as the ionic conductivity increased about two orders of magnitude upon addition of 12wt% of NH4NO3. XRD analysis shows the most amorphous SPE was obtained at 12-NH4NO3. From FTIR spectra, the interactions between 2-HEC and NH4NO3were observed by the shifts of COH peak from 1355cm-1to 1330cm-1and the presence of new NH peak in the OH region. The spectrum has been validated theoretically using Gaussian software. The results obtained from this study corroborate that the complexes of 2-HEC and NH4NO3responsible to promote the ionic conductivity to the higher value.

    Emerging cases of Fasciola and Paramphistomes co-infection have been reported, especially in tropical regions. Thisis due to Fasciola and Paramphistomes sharing biological factors which influence the pattern of transmission, especially in faecal egg shedding due to interaction and competition in the definitive host. Most reports surveyed the occurrence of fasciolosis in ruminants with a lack of observation of faecal egg distribution. Therefore, present study is aimed to assess the distribution of Fasciola and Paramphistomes faecal egg count (fec) in co-infected large ruminants in Larut, Matang, and Selama areas (Taiping). A total of 371 faecal samples were collected at random from 23 ruminant herds. Flukefinder® sedimentation was used to quantify the Fasciola and Paramphistomes eggs. Descriptive analyses were performed to determine the prevalence of co-infections, and Spearman correlation analysis was used to correlate the fec. Overall, the prevalence of Fasciola and Paramphistomes co-infection was 23.7% (n=89/371) in Taiping. Prevalence of paramphistomosis was always higher than fasciolosis in overall and single infection, with 46.9% (n=174/371) and 22.9% (n=85/371) compared to 36.9% (n=137/371) and 12.9% (n=48/371) respectively. Egg per gram (epg) of both parasites were positively skewed with a median of 1.5 epg in fasciolosis and 10.5 epg in paramphistomosis. Spearman correlation analysis of the epg in co-infected bovine was found to have a moderately positive correlation with rs=0.39 (p-value<0.01). The recent study observed a moderate prevalence of Fasciola and Paramphistomes coinfection in a large ruminant population from Taiping, with the prevalence of paramphistomosis being higher than fasciolosis. Hence, this suggests that infection with one of these parasites increases the chance of infection with another. There is a need to integrate fec in parasite surveillance to monitor the trend of parasite transmission. Findings in the present study could tailor control strategies, especially for fasciolosis to limit the economic loss and prevent zoonotic transmission.

    The plasticized solid bio-polymer electrolytes (SBEs) system has been formed by introducing glycerol (Gly) as the plasticizer into the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) doped with oleic acid (OA) via solution casting techniques. The ionic conductivity of the plasticized SBEs has been studied using Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy. The highest conductivity achieved is 1.64 × 10(-4) S cm(-1) for system containing 40 wt. % of glycerol. FTIR deconvolution technique had shown that the conductivity of CMC-OA-Gly SBEs is primarily influenced by the number density of mobile ions. Transference number measurement has shown that the cation diffusion coefficient and ionic mobility is higher than anion which proved the plasticized polymer system is a proton conductor.

    INTRODUCTION: The treat-to-target serum uric acid approach is recommended in local and international guidelines on gout management. Instruction for initiation and dose escalation for urate lowering therapy may cause confusion to the patient. Our aim was to develop and validate Gout Treat-To- Target booklet to aid in patient education.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: A content development team which consisted of three consultant rheumatologists developed the booklet. Content validation was performed by a panel of evaluators consisted of eleven physicians (four consultant rheumatologists, two clinical specialists, and five medical officers), who were involved in gout management. Face validation was performed by ten patients with gout.

    RESULTS: Item-Content Validity Index ranged from 0.9 to 1 with regards to relevancy, clarity, ambiguity and simplicity. Side effects of uricosuric agents were added to the draft based on an evaluator's comment. Item-Face Validity Index was 1, which indicated that all patients were in 100% agreement with all items.

    CONCLUSION: We developed and validated our Gout Treat-to- Target booklet. There was high agreement in I-FVI and I-CVI among physicians and patients.

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Epidemiological studies often use the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to predict the food consumption habits of a target group and subsequently promote healthy eating in the group. In the present study, a version of the FFQ for Malaysian young adults aged 18-24 years was designed and validated.

    METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: This study comprised development and validation phases. In the development phase, 129 young adults from a public university in Klang Valley completed a 3-day food record (3DFR), and the data were used to create a food list for the FFQ. Two weeks later, in the validation phase, another 100 participants recruited from the same university completed the 3DFR and a newly developed FFQ for assessing consumption of 38 food items. Finally, the data obtained from the FFQ and 3DFR were used to analyze the nutrient intake of each participant, and the developed FFQ was validated using Spearman correla-tion coefficients (r) and Bland-Altman methods.

    RESULTS: For the development phase, 38 food items were determined to contribute to 90% of the participants' total energy and macronutrient intake, and these items were included on the FFQ. For the validation phase, the average Spearman correlation coefficient for energy and all nutrients was 0.43, which indicated good agreement between the 3DFR and FFQ. Cross-classification analysis of the 3DFR and FFQ results revealed that 79% of the young adults were classified into similar or neighboring quartiles when each set of results was used. The Bland-Altman plots revealed that the results obtained using the two methods were parallel.

    CONCLUSIONS: The FFQ is a simple and validated tool that can be self-administered to young adults to assess their energy and nutrient consumption.

    Evidence suggests that high exposure to the hazards is among the most important factors causing ocular injuries and visual problems at the workplace. Individual studies show variations in prevalence, but high prevalence is reported in Asian countries. Very little is currently known about ocular injuries and visual problems of workers in construction industries in Malaysia. This study was conducted to determine the factors causing the ocular injuries and visual problems of the construction workers. Data were obtained from a cross-sectional study using purposive sampling method on 385 (770 eyes) workers. The comprehensive ocular assessment was done by using Reichert Portable Slit Lamp and a questionnaire was designed to ascertain the environmental hazards and behavior factors. Out of 770 eyes examined, 42.5% (n=327 eyes) had ocular injuries. The chemical, tools and dust exposures were among the major causes of ocular injuries and visual problems to the construction workers. There were significant differences found between the occurrence of ocular injuries to chemical (p=0.002), tools (p=0.005) and dust exposure (p=0.050). Poor knowledge on personal protective eyeglasses (PPE) (62.9%, n=242), low compliancy to wearing PPE (48.3%, n=186) and poor awareness on the environmental ocular hazards (47.0%, n=181) were observed. Our finding indicates that high prevalence of ocular injuries among construction workers, and the need to improve on the awareness, closed monitoring of occupational safety and health and identification for visual rehabilitation and return to work program

    Introduction: Myopia is an emerging vision problem that causes public health and economic burden worldwide and associated with increased risk to many ocular conditions leading to blindness. This study aimed to evaluate patterns of visual field defects in Malay population with myopia. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted between January 2018 until June 2018 at MSU Eye Centre and data was obtained from patient records of Malay subjects with myopia and free from any ocular and systemic diseases. The spherical equivalent (SE) of the refractive errors and the global indices (mean deviation, MD and pattern of standard deviation, PSD) of OCULUS Twinfield® 2 with SPARK strategy were recorded for this study. Results: A total of 90 eyes with the mean age of 29.16 (SD: 10.27) years old and SE (M= -2.92 D, SD:2.94 D) were selected. The mean of MD was -1.71 dB (SD 3.95 dB) and PSD was 1.81 dB (SD:1.82 dB) respectively. Significant differences was found in MD (p=0.012) and PSD (p=0.01) between the three groups. The localised field defect was observed in the moderate to high myopic eyes in all quadrants (p=0.01) for PP2, and also more prevalent pattern found in all quadrants for PP1 except at superior quadrant (p=0.08). Conclu- sions: There is a localised visual field defect found in a higher degree of myopia particularly at temporal, nasal and inferior quadrants. Thus, the visual field test is recommended as a routine procedure in moderate to high myopic eyes and need to be interpreted with caution.

    Colour vision assessment in low vision children remains as a big challenge to clinician. The current available colour vision (CV) tests are not friendly administered to low vision (LV) children and CV test is not part of vision screening in school children. This study was conducted to pilot a new way of assessing LV children’s colour status. A modified technique was compared to the standard of AO HRR (American Optical Hardy Rand Rittler) and D15 (Farnsworth D15) colour vision tests available in the market. A total of 15 subjects were participated in this study with the (Mean age: 10.0; SD: 2.204) with majority of (46.7%) age range of 7-9 years old. A total of 100% of the subjects participated accordingly to the instruction given and the examination were continue to assess throughout the data collection. Out of 15 students, 80% (n=12) students shows positive outcome for modified method under psychological characteristics control. Out of 12 students, 100% of students (n=12), fixate their eyes while testing both the standard and modified AO HRR, 60% (n=7) were happy with standard method, 73.3% (n=9) were happy with modified method, and 53.3% (n=6) answered correctly to standard method and 66.7% (n=8) to modified AO HRR testing method. 93.3% students (n=11), fixate their eyes while testing standard D15 method, and 100% (n=12) fixate in modified method. 80% (n=10) were happy with standard method, 73.3% (n=9) were happy with modified method, and 67.7% (n=8) answered correctly for both standard and modified D15 testing method. Using Child Affective Facial Expression (CAFÉ) set, the low vision children’s expression were assessed. The psychological characteristics of AO HRR and Farnsworth D15 for standard and modified colour vision testing method is p = 0.003 and p = 0.007 respectively. Both the testing method shows a significant relationship with no difference, but low vision children’s psychological characteristics is much controlled in modified testing method.

    Myopia is a global issue and significantly contributed to vision loss and ocular complications affected more than 1 billion people worldwide. This study aimed to evaluate visual field defects in association with the level of myopia degree. A retrospective study was conducted at MSU Eye Centre where the data of OCULUS Twinfield® 2 test from May 2015 to April 2018 were analysed. The global indices (mean deviation, MD, pattern standard deviation, PSD and probability plots) and spherical equivalent were used as parameters of this study. A total of 90 records comprising of 44.4% (40) of males and 55.6% (50) females with the mean age of 29.16 (SD: 10.27) years old and the spherical equivalent was -2.92 (SD:2.94) of the emmetrope, moderate and high myopia. The mean MD index was -1.71 dB (SD 3.95 dB) and PSD was 1.81 dB (SD:1.82 dB) respectively.     Introduction: Safety establishments at the workplace play a vital part in preventing ocular injuries in construction industries. Ocular injuries worsens the quality of life of workers, leading to economic loss. The arising of ocular injuries at emergency departments trigger a public health concern in Malaysia. This study aimed to investigate the factors causing ocular injuries among construction workers in Selangor, Malaysia. Methods: A cross-section- al study was conducted on construction workers in Klang Valley, Malaysia. A validated questionnaire evaluated factors consisting of environmental, behaviour and practice domains (α= 0.70 – 0.90) and Reichert Portable Slit Lamp assessed ocular injuries. Results: A total of 385 workers aged 18 to 65 years old completed the study. The prevalence of ocular injuries was 66.20% (n=255 eyes) which includes foreign body injuries (28.20%), subconjunc- tival haemorrhage (9.20%), corneal haze (4.75%), laceration (1.78%), corneal burn (1.18%) and traumatic cataract (0.29%). Environmental hazards such as dust 70.40% (n=271, p=0.00), chemical 75.80% ( n= 292, p=0.00), heat 68.10% (n=262, p=0.00), equipment 60.5% (n=233, p=0.00), fall 54.80% (n=211, p=0.00) and limited working space 52.70% (n=203, p=0.00) significantly contributed to the ocular injuries. The central concept of neuromarketing is strongly related to brain activities, understanding the consumers’ subconscious mind, explaining consumers’ preferences, motivations, and expectations, and predicting consumers’ behavior. Neuromarketing is not to replace traditional marketing methods, but rather to provide unique and complementary insights. This paper focuses on the growing field of neuromarketing and aims to explain the fundamental concepts of neuromarketing to ensure that its unexplored practical usefulness can positively contribute to the field of marketing.     In this era of technological advancement, there is a tremendous growth in the usage of mobile applications, mainly among accounting students in higher institutions as a medium for learning tools in education. Accounting students at tertiary level basically are subjected to learn different types of accounting standards. Accounting standards have continued to evolve to strike the balance between providing meaningful information to the users and balancing up cost of preparing such information. However, there is a growing concern that financial reporting has become overly complex. The complexity caused by financial reporting standards may derive from many factors, such as their length, the difficulty in understanding them, and the cost of applying their requirements. In the educational stream, students find that it is hard to understand lengthy wordings in the standards. Therefore, this interactive application is designed to help users especially students on classification issues under MFRS140 Investment Property. Hence,the purpose of the study is to prove the practicality and usefulness of mobile apps to understand accounting standards which is known as MFRS140: Quick Chart Mobile App particularly among final semester accounting students. In this study, the results revealed that this application provides useful and precise guidelines for students as to avoid lengthy wordings to increase the level of their understanding. By using the application, users will have a better knowledge in identifying whether the land and buildings fall under MFRS140 or other MFRSs. Furthermore, the application contributes to the effort of making users learn standards of accounting in a different perspective rather than a classroom-oriented perspective.

    Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) are common occupational injuries among workers in the construction industry. Epidemiological studies indicated that WMSDs include neck pain, lower back pain, knee pain, leg fatigue as well as ankle and feet discomfort. The objectives of this study are to identify the WMSDs experienced by the workers during construction works and discuss the causes of those WMSDs. Subjective approach associated with modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was applied to identify the symptoms of WMSDs. A case study was conducted in several construction sites situated at the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia. During the study, 37 construction workers with different age and scope of works were interviewed to determine the WMSDs that they have experienced. Based on distributed questionnaire, almost all workers experienced pain in the region of lower back, upper back and biceps. These pains were contributed by manipulation of heavy load and high force exertion. Based on discussed causations, control measures via engineering controls method and administrative controls method were proposed to alleviate the risk of WMSDs among construction workers.
