The evolution of nursing profession and education has taken its pace over the past years. Therefore, with the changes in nursing education over the years, the level of professional socialization among the students has become an area of interest. The objectives of this pilot study were to explore and compare the level of professional socialization between the diploma and degree nursing students (first year and final year) using the measuring tool of NPVS-R as well as to identify the demographic variables related to the level of professional socialization among the nursing students. From this pilot study, it was found that there was no significant difference in the level of professional socialization between the diploma and degree nursing students (p = 0.133). With regards to the demographic variables related to the level of professional socialization, significant difference was found only for the variable of father's educational level (p = 0 .035).

Introduction: Isometric shoulder strength is vital in the management of individuals suffering from shoulder diseases such as rotator cuff tears. Normal values for the working Filipino population who are at risk of developing shoulder problems are lacking. The objective of this study was to determine the isometric baseline isometric shoulder strengths in scaption of healthy Filipino individuals aged 20-30 years old without a history of a shoulder injury.

Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study measuring the isometric strength values using the handheld IDO isometer of dominant and non-dominant shoulder of healthy Filipino individuals aged 20 to 30 years old.

Results: There is no significant difference in the mean isometric shoulder strength between the dominant and non-dominant arm for both sexes. The male gender scored higher values compared to the female gender and is statistically significant.

Conclusion: There is no difference in isometric shoulder strength between the dominant and non-dominant shoulder. Strength differences favour the male gender.

Two cases of leiomyomas of the jejunum presenting with gastrointestinal bleeding of uncertain origin are described. Diagnosis was finally established by selective angiography. Laparotomy and resection of the tumour were successfully performed. The approach and management of this rare tumour are outlined.

Two hundred and twelve of undescended testes were operated on in the Department of Surgery, Singapore General Hospital between the years 1974 through 1980. There was a 51.9% incidence of right undescended testis, 34.9% left undescended testis and 13.2% were bilateral. The method of treatment was surgical exploration with orchidopexy wherever technically feasible or orchidectomy if the testis was found to be severely hypoplastic. Of the total series, 42% were operated on before the age of 5 years. The oldest patient undergoing orchidopery was aged 40. Failure of orchidopexy to secure the scrotal position for the testis was noted in 14 cases. This was probably due to inadequate mobilisation at the first operation. There was no mortality and no significant morbidity following surgical treatment in this series.

A dot enzyme immunoassay (DEIA) for the detection of antibodies to dengue virus was tested for use as a tool in the presumptive diagnosis of dengue fever and dengue haemorrhagic fever. Paired sera from the following groups of patients were tested using the DEIA and the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test: those with primary dengue fever; those experiencing a second dengue infection; and febrile patients who did not have dengue. The data obtained show that the DEIA can be effectively used at a serum dilution of 1:1000 to confirm presumptive recent dengue in patients with a second dengue infection. However, demonstration of seroconversion proved necessary for patients with primary dengue. At a serum dilution of 1:1000 the DEIA has a specificity of 97.3%. The role of this simple and rapid test in improving the effectivity of programmes for the control of dengue virus infection is discussed.

We describe a patient who had fever and bilateral cortical blindness and was later found to have leaking intracerebral mycotic aneurysm secondary to Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis. He had a vegetation at the .tricuspid valve with evidence of systemic embolisation, however, chest radiograph did not reveal any evidence of pulmonary emboli.

Giant cell tumour of bone occurring around the knee is fairly common and can be difficult to manage. We report a case of such tumour involving the distal femur which was successfully treated with complete excision followed by arthrodesis of the knee with a long interlocking intramedullary nail.

A retrospective study was carried out on 42 patients (38 males, 4 females, mean age 25.9) with liver injury at the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur from 1994 through to 1991. Prognostic factors that might help to identify those patient survival was related to pulse rate on arrival ( < or = 120 beats per minute, p = 0.027), systolic blood pressure at induction of anaesthesia ( > or = to 80 mmHg, p = 0.003) and intraoperative blood transfusion of < or = to 4 units (p = 0.05). This data were supported by the 95% confidence interval suggesting that these factors may be strong prognostic indicators individually. Increased mortality was also associated with increased total blood transfused (p = 0.002) and grade of liver injury (p = 0.02). Although the factors we have identified reflect both the severity of injury and resuscitative and surgical efforts, further studies using a prospective design are required to confirm these findings.

A case is reported of retroperitoneal malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) invading into the colon, causing fresh bleeding per rectum. It illustrates the difficulty encountered in the pre-operative diagnosis of this condition, especially in a patient with an atypical presentation of profuse lower gastrointestinal bleeding.

Serum samples from healthy adults in four geographic/ethnic groups (Ghanaian Blacks, Malaysian Chinese, Malaysian Indians and United States Caucasians) were tested under code for antibodies to human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6). The prevalence and titer of HHV-6 antibody in the healthy Ghanaians were significantly higher than in the Malaysian Chinese; United States Caucasians and Malaysian Indians had intermediate prevalence and titer of antibodies. Thus far, no specific differences in HHV-6-associated diseases have been noted between geographic/ethnic groups with these marked variations in antibody patterns.

Cleft lip and palate is the most common congenital abnormality seen in the Department of Plastic Surgery, Singapore General Hospital. A total of 461 operative cases seen over a period of 5 years (1977 to 1981) is analysed. There is a relatively high incidence in the Singapore population of 2.0 per 1000 live births. In both cleft lip and cleft palate deformities, there is no significant difference in the sex distribution. The cleft patterns show that 78% of the cases are unilateral clefts, 53% are left sided, 25% are right sided and 22% of the cases are bilateral clefts.
