    We report the first case of Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) who successfully underwent surgery in Malaysia following a grade 4 (severe) chemical injury in both eyes in 2006. The patient's left eye was eviscerated and his right eye underwent penetrating keratoplasty. However, the corneal graft failed and became opaque. His right eye could only perceive light. The OOKP was offered to him hoping to recover some functional vision. He underwent a 2-stage surgery to implant the OOKP into his right eye. However, 2 months post-operation, he developed vitreous haemorrhage. A successful pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was performed via the limited view through the lens. He attained a final visual acuity of 6/60 (N36). He was able to mobilize more independently, feed, dress himself and read large print.

    This report presents a 29-year-old aggressive periodontitis patient from Morocco with a history of orthodontic treatment. Despite all the first molars showing advanced bone loss, the maxillary anterior teeth did not show any periodontal destruction. The scientific literature rarely reports cases of aggressive periodontitis without involving maxillary anterior teeth. The treatment provided includes extraction of hopeless tooth, removal of overhanging restoration, scaling, root debridement, and regenerative periodontal therapy. The discussion highlights the dilemma during diagnosis of the case as either "iatrogenic periodontitis due to orthodontic treatment" or "localized aggressive periodontitis." The age group of 15-35 years is the common age group for patients' seeking orthodontic treatment and the occurrence of aggressive periodontitis. Sound knowledge of periodontitis and identification of early signs of aggressive periodontitis through meticulous periodontal examination may help in earlier identification and minimalistic treatment. Education regarding periodontitis, especially aggressive periodontitis, is essential among orthodontists and general dentists. This case report aims to discuss the dilemma involved during diagnosis of localized aggressive periodontitis.

    AIM: Successful endodontic treatment of primary teeth requires comprehensive knowledge and understanding of root canal morphology. The purpose of this study was to investigate the root canal configurations of primary maxillary second molars using micro-computed tomography.

    METHODS: Extracted human primary maxillary second molars (n = 57) were scanned using micro-computed tomography and reconstructed to produce three-dimensional models. Each root canal system was analysed qualitatively according to Vertucci's classification.

    RESULTS: 22.8% (n = 13) of the sample presented with the fusion of the disto-buccal and palatal roots; of these, Type V was the most prevalent classification. For teeth with three separate roots (n = 44), the most common root canal type was Type 1 for the palatal canal (100%) and disto-buccal canal (77.3%) and Type V for the mesio-buccal canal (36.4%). Overall, 7% (n = 4) of mesio-buccal canals were 'unclassifiable'.

    CONCLUSION: The root canal systems of primary maxillary second molars were not only complex but had a range of configurations that may contribute to unfavourable clinical outcomes after endodontic treatment.

    Aims and Objectives: To compare the effect for fracture resistance of different coronally extended post length with two different post materials.

    Materials and Methods: One hundred and sixty endodontically treated maxillary central incisors embedded in acrylic resin with decoronated root portion were taken for the study. The postspaces were prepared according to standard protocol. The samples were divided into two groups according to the post material: glass-fiber post and Quartz fiber post. These groups were further subdivided on the basis of coronal extension of 4 and 6 mm for glass fiber and Quartz fiber posts, respectively. The posts were then luted with dual-polymerizing resin cement followed by core buildup. Samples were subjected to increasing compressive oblique load until fracture occurred in a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and independent Student's t-test. Analysis was done using SPSS version 15 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) Windows software program.

    Results: Glass fiber post with coronal extension of 4 mm (182.8 N) showed better results than with 6-mm length (124.1 N). Similarly, in quartz fiber posts group, 4-mm postlength (314 N) was better when compared with 6 mm (160 N). The 4-mm coronal extension of quartz fiber post displayed superior fracture resistance.

    Conclusions: Glass fiber posts showed better fracture resistance than Quartz fiber posts. 4-mm coronal length showed more fracture resistance than 6 mm.

    Teeth are the most durable structures in the human body. The pattern of their development has been used as a credible technique of age determination of unidentified bodies. Dental age estimation is by comparison of the dental status of an individual with published dental surveys. The third molars are the last teeth to erupt and are regarded as the most variable in the dentition. Nevertheless, radiographs depicting their growth have been used to determine the chronological age. A case for actual need for age estimation using a developing third molar is presented here.

    Cone-beam-computed-tomography (CBCT) has been useful in providing insights of relevant anatomy prior to surgical
    procedures, including the assessment of the proximity of impacted mandibular-third-molar to the inferior-alveolar-canal
    (IAC). It is important to understand the reliability of conventional panoramic-radiograph in the assessment of this criterion
    since it is more commonly used as first line radiographic approach due to its availability and lower radiation dose. This
    study aimed to investigate the reliability of conventional panoramic-radiograph in the evaluation of the proximity of
    impacted mandibular-third-molar root tip to the IAC by correlating the results with CBCT. A total of 65 root tips of impacted
    mandibular-third-molars that had both panoramic radiographs and CBCT images were included in this retrospective study.
    Two trained observers participated in all image evaluations. A prepared standard 1 cm ruler was used to measure the
    proximity of the third-molar root apices to the IACs. Measurements recorded in this study were categorized into positive
    (root apex above a roof of IAC), zero (root apex was superimposed on IAC) and negative (root apex below a roof of IAC).
    Data analysis was carried out using student t-test. In this study, both observers recorded statistically significant differences
    in the measurement between third-molars root apices and the IAC from panoramic radiographs and CBCT images. The low
    reliability of panoramic radiograph to assess the vertical proximity between these two anatomical structures suggests
    the importance of additional assessment with CBCT in cases where panoramic radiograph shows superimposition of the
    third molar root on the roof of the canal and presence of root below the roof of the IAC.

    Labial and buccal gingival recession is a common finding in the adult population, which can occur due to various factors. When present, it can lead to an unesthetic appearance and can cause hypersensitivity. However, very limited literature is available regarding the incidence of palatal gingival recession. Many times it goes unnoticed during routine clinical examinations. Although there are no esthetic concerns in these regions, recession can cause sensitivity and pose a technical challenge in surgical correction because of poor accessibility and visibility. This case reports the treatment of a single palatal recession defect using an epithelial embossed connective tissue graft. The 12-month follow-up of the case showed significant root coverage (93.6%) and decreased sensitivity. The advantage of the harvested graft was that the connective tissue was not exposed, as it was tucked into the underlying flap, and the mucosal contour was maintained.

    BACKGROUND: To determine the root canal morphology of human permanent maxillary and mandibular teeth in a Malaysian subpopulation using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

    METHODS: A total of 208 CBCT images were examined retrospectively. Prevalence of an extra root/canal and internal morphology based on Vertucci's classification were observed in human maxillary and mandibular permanent teeth. Variations in the external and internal morphology were compared in relation to gender and tooth side (left vs right) using Pearson Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests with significance level set at p root (radix entomolaris) were detected in 1.9, 19.5 and 21.4% of mandibular first molars, respectively. The prevalence of a C-shaped canal was observed in 48.7% of mandibular second molars. Females displayed significantly higher prevalence of a C-shaped canal in the right mandibular second molars than males (p root anatomy and root canal morphology were observed in relation to gender and tooth side.

    CONCLUSIONS: Wide variations in the root canal morphology exist among Malaysians. CBCT is a clinically useful tool in the identification of external and internal morphological variations in the human teeth.

    The palatal root of the first permanent molar is the most commonly deflected root into the maxillary sinus during extraction. A rational approach to the surgical removal of a root from the antrum is important. Some surgeons prefer the alveolar approach while others prefer the Caldwell-Luc operation. A case is presented where the palatal root tip of the left upper first molar was removed from the maxillary sinus by the Caldwell-Luc approach with simultaneous closure of the oro-antral fistula resulting from dental extraction. A fibreoptic light probe was used. The advantages and disadvantages as well as how to avoid the common complications of this surgical technique are discussed. A good result was achieved with successful removal of the root and no loss of sensibility of the teeth and/or gum for this case.

    The objectives of this study were to determine the normal mean value of the root-crown (R/C ratios) in Malay patients and their variations by gender and dental arch from orthopantomogram radiographs (OPGs). Two thousand nine hundred and twenty teeth with fully developed roots were measured from 112 OPGs. Subjects with history of maxillofacial trauma or orthodontic therapy were excluded. The mean age of the subjects was 19.1 (SD 2.08) years old for males while females 18.9 (SD 2.19) years old in the range from 15 to 22 years old. The intra-examiner reproducibility of the assessment method was good (Intraclass correlation coefficient 0.81). Results of this study showed that there was no significant difference between R/C ratios of males and females groups.     Tujuan kertas kerja ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan, kesan ekonomi semasa dan faktor pencemaran terhadap modal, perbelanjaan terhadap pertumbuhan ekonomi terutamanya kepada Malaysia dan dibandingkan dengan negara seperti Jepun, Singapura dan Zimbabwe. Persoalan utama adalah sama ada modal dan perbelanjaan dapat berterusan menyumbangkan kepada pertumbuhan ekonomi ataupun tidak. Untuk mengkaji perhubungan, kami gunakan Test Unit Root (TUR); Augmented Dickey-Fuller Method (ADF), Phillip-Perron Test (PP) dan Kwiatkowski-Phillip-Schmidt-Shin (KPSS), Test Johansen Cointegration (TJC), diikuti Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) dan akhir sekali Test Granger Causality (TGC). Tujuan pengujian ini adalah untuk mengukur perhubungan, kestabilan dan kesahihan model. Kedua, untuk mengkaji kesan impak ekonomi kami gunakan Impulse Respond dan ujian Variance Decomposition yang menyelidik kesan berapa banyak dan berapa panjang model bertindakbalas kepada kesan Kegawatan Ekonomi Asia pada 1997 dan Kesan Serangan Pengganas di Amerika Syarikat pada September 2011. Ketiga kami juga megukur kesan perbelanjaan isi rumah dan kerajaan terhadap alam persekitaran. Kertas kerja ini mendapati, ia menyokong idea modal penjana pertumbuhan tetapi natijah perbelanjaan penjana pertumbuhan adalah berbeda mengikut tahap pertumbuhan. Di mana Malaysia dan Singapura menyokong sepenuhnya tetapi Jepun dan Zimbabwe hanya menyokong separa sahaja. Apabila kami mengukur impak kesan ekonomi pula, di dapati pada negara Zimbabwe tiada kesan antara krisis pada tahun 1997 ataupun pada 2001. Tetapi impak pada negara seperti Jepun, Malaysia dan Singapura pula berhadapan dalam posisi tidak baik pada krisis tahun 1997 tetapi keadaan yang baik pula pada krisis tahun 2001. Akhir sekali kami juga bangunkan theori pencemaran dimana untuk negara Zimbabwe ke semua pembolehubah seperti Perbelanjaan isi rumah (HC), Perbelanjaan Kerajaan (GC) dan Modal Tetap Kasar (GFC) tidak mempengaruhi pencemaran iaitu Karbon Dioksida (CO2). Tetapi natijah untuk negara Malaysia dan Singapura pula hanya HC mencipta CO2, tidak untuk GC dan GFC. Dan pengakhiran sekali Negara Jepun pula semua pembolehubah seperti GC,HC dan GFC mencipta pencemaran. Kesimpulannya krisis yang berlaku pada negara Amerika Syarikat pada tahun 2001 memberi kesan terus pada Negara Amerika tetapi tidak pada negara seperti Malaysia, Jepun dan Singapura, walhal negara-negara ini menadapat lambakan di dalam pasaran modal akibat perubahan ketidaktentuan dalam ekonomi Amerika seterusnya meningkatkan secara langsung Keluaran Dalam Negara Kasar (GDP). Walaubagaimanapun negara Zimbabwe tidak mempunyai kesan langsung sama ada sebelum atupun selepas masalah krisis ekonomi ini. Apabila kertas kerja ini mengkaji daripada sudut pembangunan lestari didapati Negara Zimbabwe seperti HC dan GC tidaklah mencemar seperti negara Malaysia dan Singapura yang menunjukkan HC punca pencemaran dan bukannya GC yang mungkin disebabkan skala ekonominya yang lebih kecil. Untuk negara Jepun pula disebabkan negara ini mempunyai skala ekonomi yang lebih besar HC dan GC adalah agen kepada pencemaran. Implikasinya model ini sepatutnya diambil kira dalam pembuat keputusan terutamanya untuk meninkatkan pertumbuhan ekonomi.

    The treatment of haematological malignancy is multimodal and involves chemotherapy, radiotherapy and/or bone marrow transplants. With the advancement in cancer therapy, there is an increase in the survival of many children with childhood haematological malignancy. In addition, the late effect of the oncology treatment to the orofacial and dental development becomes significant in terms of the potential clinical impact that may affect the quality of life of the survivor. The severity of the long-term effects is dependent on the age of the child at initiation of treatment and whether chemotherapy is combined with radiation or not. The dental treatment may become more complex if the patient requires advanced restorative dental care and the roots malformation may complicate orthodontic treatment. Therefore these patients may require a scheduled careful preventive programme, long-term follow up, with prophylactic treatment and intervention at appropriate time to minimize the consequences of the disease and the given therapy.

    A case report showing the eruption of the left maxillary and mandibular permanent cuspids in a six-year-old boy, is presented. In addition, the dental age of all the permanent cuspids as seen by the eruption and tooth development suggested that the cuspids are comparable to those seen in a 13 to 14 year-old-boy. A search of the literature has not revealed any such reports.

    Objective: To evaluate the root debridement skill in periodontology pre-clinical module among dental students and to estimate the effectiveness of conducting periodontology pre-clinical module before entering clinical module. Materials and Method: : A total of 47 pre-clinical dental students (Year 2) were included in this study. Single rooted extracted teeth were collected, mounted on acrylic resin and set into the level of 1/3 of the root length. Each of them were instructed to prepare a mounted teeth and to perform root debridement procedure on the labial surface of the tooth only within 10 minutes using Gracey curette #5/6. The similar samples were distributed back to the same students (which were already in clinical year (year 4) to repeat the same procedure on the lingual surface of the same tooth. Root surface roughness was evaluated by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and profilometer for both labial and lingual surfaces. Statistical analysis was done using Mann-Whitney U test and T-test. Significance level of p ≤ 0.05 was assumed for all analysis. Results: SEM photomicrographs of root surfaces with magnifications of 100x and 800x revealed that there were incomplete removal of the dental calculus in both surfaces and significant roughness root surfaces noted. Conclusion: : No significant differences noted between the students’ root debridement skill in the pre-clinical and also clinical year. Objectives of the current module were fulfilled but in order to meet the highest standard, current module need to be improved in the future.

    The objectives of this study were to assess the practice of molar root canal treatment (RCT) among general dental practitioners (GDPs), confidence level of GDPs in performing molar RCT and to identify factors that influence their confidence in managing molar RCI. One hundred questionnaires were distributed to GDPs in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Fifty questionnaires were delivered by mail and the remaining fifty were hand-delivered. All data was coded and verified. Fiftysix OOPs rcsponded to the questionnaires. Only fortyfive questionnaires were accepted (n=45) as eleven OOPs had never performed molar RCI. Most of the OOPs followed the standard quality guidelines while performing molar RCT except for vitality testing (36.4%) and rubber dam usage (27.3%). In this study, 100% of the GDPs were confident in making diagnosis of perinidicular diseases and 95.4% were confident in performing molar RCT from history taking until obturation. Patients' tolerance and availability of instruments and materials (97.7%) were two factors that most influence the GDPs' confidence level. The. least influcncing factor was undergraduate training (78.1 %). Attending seminars and lectures on endodontic, large number of molar teeth treated for ReT, patLents' affordability to pay for RCT and postgraduate training also influencc GDPs' confidence to a certain degree. From this study, it can be concluded that majority of OOPs complied standard quality guidelines except for vitality testing and rubber dam usage. Most of them were confident in performing molar RCT and were greatly influenced by the availability or"instruments and materials in their clinic and patients' tolerance in receiving molar RCI.

    Introduction: While there are many root morphology classification systems with their own distinct advantages, there are many shortcomings that come along with each system.

    Objectives: The aim of this review was to compare the various root and root canal morphology classifications, their advantages, limitations, and clinical and research implications. Data Sources and Selection. An extensive literature search was conducted on PubMed and Scopus to identify the published data on root and root canal classification systems published until 1 May 2020 using keywords, root canal classification system, classification systems for root canals, and root morphology. The related literature was reviewed and then summarized. Data Synthesis. Several studies have analysed and detailed root and root canal classifications and further added new subsystems, works of Weine et al. (1969) and Vertucci et al. (1974). Besides, Sert and Bayirli (2004) added supplementary types to Vertucci's classification system. A new classification was most recently introduced by Ahmed et al. (2017) involving the use of codes for tooth numbering, number of roots, and canal configuration.

    Conclusions: Weine et al. classified only single-rooted teeth, without considering multirooted teeth and complex configurations. Vertucci's classification included complex configurations, with Sert and Bayirli adding further complex supplemental types. Ahmed et al.'s classification simplifies classifying root and canal morphology while overcoming the limitations of several previous classification systems making it beneficial for implementation in dental schools.
