MATERIALS AND METHODS: The imaging studies for 12 patients with biopsy-proven hepatic tuberculosis from January 2012 till March 2014 were reviewed retrospectively. These cases were confirmed via ultrasound-guided biopsy.
RESULTS: The patients were aged 24-72 years. Four patients had parenchymal tuberculosis only and eight patients had mixed parenchymal and biliary duct involvement. The parenchymal tuberculosis patients showed poorly enhancing, hypodense nodules on CT with central calcification and adjacent dilated intrahepatic ducts. Most patients had multiple lesions except for two patients with a single lesion. The size of the lesions ranged from 0.5 to 6 cm. Seven patients with biliary duct involvement showed a hilar strictures involving the intrahepatic ducts and common bile duct. Nine of the patients showed hilar stricture with atrophy of the ipsilateral lobe of the liver and compensatory hypertrophy of the contralateral lobe. Hepatolithiasis was seen in five patients. Tuberculous lung involvement was seen in seven patients.
CONCLUSION: The presence of calcified and hypodense nodules with biliary duct dilatation associated with lobar atrophy were the most consistent features of hepatic tuberculosis, especially in the presence of active lung disease.
METHODS: It was a cross-sectional study carried out at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC), Malaysia. Records of patients with focal thyroid nodules on ultrasound (US) for which US-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was performed and pathology results were available, from January 2014 to May 2016 were selected for review. Correlation of the U Classification with pathology results was assessed. Sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were calculated in a conservative and non-conservative method. The threshold for statistical performance was set at 0.05. Each sonographic feature was also compared with its pathology results.
RESULTS: A total of 91 patients with 104 nodules were eligible. 12 nodules out of 104 (11.5%) were malignant. The sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy were 100%, 91.3%, 11.5, 0.0, 60%, 100% and 92.3%, and 100%, 91.4%, 11.7%, 0.0, 78.6%, 100% and 93.5%, for the non-conservative and conservative method of calculations respectively.
CONCLUSION: The U Classification is reliable in predicting thyroid malignancy. More evidence is nevertheless necessary for widespread adaptation and use.
METHODS: This is a single-centre prospective study of a well-characterized cohort of MAFLD patients who underwent liver biopsy and followed every 6-12 months for adverse clinical outcomes.
RESULTS: The data for 202 patients were analyzed [median age 55.0 (48.0-61.3) years old; male, 47.5%; obese, 88.6%; diabetes mellitus, 71.3%; steatohepatitis, 76.7%; advanced fibrosis, 27.2%]. METHODS: Individual data were collected from 14 registry centers on patients with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and in all patients, circulating CK-18 M30 levels were measured. Individuals with a NAFLD activity score (NAS) ≥5 with a score of ≥1 for each of steatosis, ballooning, and lobular inflammation were diagnosed as having definite NASH; individuals with a NAS ≤2 and no fibrosis were diagnosed as having non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL).
RESULTS: A total of 2571 participants were screened, and 1008 (153 with NAFL and 855 with NASH) were finally enrolled.
