    Camel urine has traditionally been used to treat multiple human diseases and possesses the most beneficial effects amongst the urine of other animals. However, scientific review evaluating the anticancer, antiplatelet, gastroprotective and hepatoprotective effects of camel urine is still scarce. Thus, this scoping review aimed to provide scientific evidence on the therapeutic potentials of camel urine. Three databases were searched to identify relevant articles (Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus) up to September 2020. Original articles published in English that investigated the effects of camel urine in various diseases were included. The literature search identified six potential articles that met all the inclusion criteria. Three articles showed that camel urine possesses cytotoxic activities against different types of cancer cells. Two studies revealed camel urine's protective effects against liver toxicity and gastric ulcers, whilst another study showed the role of camel urine as an antiplatelet agent. All studies demonstrated significant positive effects with different effective dosages. Thus, camel urine shows promising therapeutic potential in treating human diseases, especially cancer. However, the standardised dosage and potential side effects should be determined before camel urine could be offered as an alternative treatment.

    Wilms tumor is the most common primary malignant renal tumor of childhood which usually presents between 2 and 6 years of age. Its presentation in the neonatal period is extremely rare and presenting with intestinal obstruction is perhaps unknown. We report a 2-day-old baby girl who manifested features of acute upper gastrointestinal obstruction with frequent post-feeding vomiting and abdominal distension. The initial abdominal radiograph showed abnormally displayed small bowel loops to the right hemiabdomen. Subsequent ultrasound and computed tomography scan of the abdomen detected a massive left renal mass. Left-sided nephrectomy was performed, and histopathology demonstrated left-sided Wilms tumor with favorable histology. Post-treatment yearly follow-up for 5 years recorded a disease-free, normally thriving child.

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nano-zinc oxide (ZnO-N) morphology on the functional and antimicrobial properties of tapioca starch films. For this reason, nanosphere (ZnO-ns), nanorod (ZnO-nr), and nanoparticle of ZnO (ZnO-np) at 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% were added to the starch film. Then, physicochemical, mechanical, and barrier properties were evaluated. Also, UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra and antibacterial activity of prepared nanocomposite films against Escherichia coli were examined. The results revealed that the ZnO-ns had the most effects on mechanical, physicochemical, and barrier properties. The highest values of the tensile strength (14.15 MPa) and Young's modulus (32.74 MPa) and the lowest values of elongation at break (10.40%) were obtained in the films containing 2% of ZnO nanosphere. In terms of UV transmission, ZnO-nr showed the most significant impact morphology. FTIR spectra indicated that interactions for all morphologies were physical interaction, and there are no chemical reactions between starch structure and nanoparticles. The antibacterial effect of the ZnO-ns was higher than that of other morphologies. In summary, ZnO-ns was the best morphology for using ZnO-N in starch-based nanocomposite films.

    Background: Most studies showing association between mothers with obesity in pregnancy or excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) and adverse neonatal outcome were cross-sectional or retrospective. Many included patients are with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which is a strong risk factor for this adverse outcome. There are no prospective studies on this topic in Malaysia. This study aimed to examine prospectively the effects of obesity in pregnancy and GWG, independent of GDM, on neonatal outcome.

    Methods: Pregnant mothers in the first trimester, who presented to health clinics in Kuching, were screened. Mothers with existing diabetes mellitus or GDM were excluded using 75-g oral glucose tolerance test during the first and second trimesters. Participants with the first trimester BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2 were recruited as overweight/obese group, whereas those with BMI 18.5-22.9 kg/m2 were taken as the comparison group. At every trimester visit, mothers' weights were recorded. Babies' birth weight and occurrence of adverse neonatal outcome were documented.

    Results: There were 123 mothers recruited as overweight/obese group (mean BMI 29.0 kg/m2 ± 4.45) and 102 mothers as comparison group (mean BMI 20.4 kg/m2 ± 1.48). The number of low birth weight was similar between groups: 9.8% in overweight/obese group, 6.9% in the comparison group (p = 0.416). More than half of these babies were born to mothers with inadequate GWG (58.3% in obese group vs. 57.1% in control group, p = 0.077). There was no significant difference in the mean birth weight (3000 g ± 454.5 vs. 3038 g ± 340.8, p = 0.471), preterm delivery (8.13% vs. 3.92%, p = 0.193), and admission rate to neonatal intensive care unit (8.13% vs. 7.85%, p = 0.937) between groups. There was a positive correlation between the total GWG in overweight/obese group on baby's weight (r = 0.222, p = 0.013). Inadequate GWG was not correlated with lower birth weight (p = 0.052).

    Conclusions: Obesity in pregnancy was not associated with poor neonatal outcome in this small sample of women in Malaysia. Total GWG showed a weak correlation with baby's birth weight in overweight/obese group.

    Nowadays, pollution of the environment is a huge problem for humans and other organisms' health. Conventional methods of pollutant removal like membrane filtration or ion exchange are not efficient enough to lower the number of pollutants to standard levels. Biological methods, because of their higher efficiency and biocompatibility, are preferred for the remediation of pollutants. These cost-effective and environment-friendly methods of reducing pollutants are called bioremediation. In bioremediation methods, enzymes play the most crucial role. Enzymes can remedy different types of organic and inorganic pollutants, including PAHs, azo dyes, polymers, organocyanides, lead, chromium, and mercury. Different enzymes isolated from various species have been used for the bioremediation of pollutants. Discovering new enzymes and new subtypes with specific physicochemical characteristics would be a promising way to find more efficient and cost-effective tools for the remediation of pollutants.

    Primary Intrapulmonary Thymoma (PIT) is an infrequent ectopic lung tumor that poses a diagnostic dilemma and has a poorly understood origin. We report a previously healthy 61-year-old lady who presented with cough and weight loss for a month. Diagnostic imaging showed a large left upper lobe mass and two multifocal pleural based nodules in the left lower lobe. She underwent Computed Tomography (CT) guided biopsy of the lung mass and histopathological findings was consistent with a combined Type B1 and B2 thymoma. She was planned for 6 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy with the intent of achieving tumor downstaging and resectability. Due to the lack of established evidence for management of unresectable disease, we wish to highlight the importance of multidisciplinary consensus before pursuing multimodality treatment.

    Despite the wide-ranging studies on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), firm performance, and Organizational Leadership (OL), there have been only a few studies examining the inter-relationship between them. Accordingly, this investigation has tried to investigate how OL contributes to the firm's performance through the CSR strategies. It has an internal orientation to CSR motivations compared to the existing studies that mostly considered the external factors in implementing of CSR in firms; also, it has a comprehensive view toward the firm's performance by considering both financial and non-financial aspects of performance. It could be said that this study has tried to answer the question of whether or not CSR can be as a mediator between the OL and firm performance. Data collection was performed from 285 manufacturing and consumer products firms located in Malaysia during the four-month period of June-September of 2020. AMOS Structural Equation Modeling (AMOS-SEM) method was applied to analyze the model. Following the Baron and Kenny approach in testing the hypotheses, it was found that the relationships of OL and financial performance, as well as OL and non-financial performance were partially mediated by CSR. In addition, the non-financial performance was found as a full mediator between the OL and financial performance. Further, the results revealed two full mediated relationships in this way that non-financial performance was a full mediator variable between CSR and financial performance, as well as CSR and non-financial performance which were found as two multiple full mediators between OL and financial performance. The results help Malaysian managers to understand their current status, capabilities, strong points and weaknesses in leadership regarding to CSR. Moreover, due to the positive effects of CSR on both firm's financial and non-financial performance, CSR is recommended to be integrated in leadership style and the organizational strategies in order to having better performance.

    Objective: To evaluate contemporary patterns in prepregnancy cardiovascular health (CVH) in the United States (US).

    Methods: We conducted a serial, cross-sectional study of National Center for Health Statistics Natality Data representing all live births in the US from 2011 to 2019. We assigned 1 point for each of four ideal prepregnancy metrics (nonsmoking and ideal body mass index [18.5-24.9 kg/m2] provided by maternal self-report, and absence of hypertension and diabetes ascertained by the healthcare professional at delivery) to construct a prepregnancy clinical CVH score ranging from 0 to 4. We described the distribution of prepregnancy CVH, overall and stratified by self-reported race/ethnicity, age, insurance status, and receipt of the Women, Infants, and Children program (WIC) for supplemental nutrition. We examined trends by calculating average annual percent changes (AAPCs) in optimal prepregnancy CVH (score of 4).

    Results: Of 31,643,982 live births analyzed between 2011 and 2019, 53.6% were to non-Hispanic White, 14.5% non-Hispanic Black, 23.3% Hispanic, and 6.6% non-Hispanic Asian women. The mean age (SD) was 28.5 (5.8) years. The prevalence (per 100 live births) of optimal prepregnancy CVH score of 4 declined from 42.1 to 37.7 from 2011 to 2019, with an AAPC (95% CI) of -1.4% per year (-1.3,-1.5). While the relative decline was observed across all race/ethnicity, insurance, and WIC subgroups, significant disparities persisted by race, insurance status, and receipt of WIC. In 2019, non-Hispanic Black women (28.7 per 100 live births), those on Medicaid (30.4), and those receiving WIC (29.1) had the lowest prevalence of optimal CVH.

    Conclusions: Overall, less than half of pregnant women had optimal prepregnancy CVH, and optimal prepregnancy CVH declined in each race/ethnicity, age, insurance, and WIC subgroup between 2011-2019 in the US. However, there were persistent disparities by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status.

    The interaction and the interplay of climate change with oil palm production in the Southeast Asia region are of serious concern. This particularly applies in Malaysia due to its rank as the second largest palm oil producer in the world. The anthropogenic activities and the agroecological practices in oil palm plantation, including excessive use of fertilisers, bush fire due to land clearing, and cultivation on peatland, have exacerbated the effects of climate change featuring extreme events, drought, flooding, heatwave, as well as infestation of pest and diseases. These adverse impacts on oil palm production highlight the significance of deploying effective adaptation strategies. The study aims to examine the impact of climate change on oil palm production and identify the farmers' adaptation strategies to the impacts of climate change in Malaysia. This study was conducted a comprehensive review of the articles published from 2000 to 2021 in the contexts of climate change and oil palm production in Malaysia. The review shows that climate change has a range of impacts on the oil palm production in Malaysia. As a result, several adaptation options were identified, such as breeding of hybrid varieties that are tolerant and resistant to heat; sustainable management of soil; pit and tranches to enhance water management in plantation areas; minimal use of fertilisers, herbicides, and pesticides; zero burning; and minimum tillage. The reviewed studies recommended the following to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change: sustainable national policy on climate change, conservation of the existing carbon stock, effective management of tropical rainforest biodiversity, afforestation for carbon sequestration, and reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission.

    INTRODUCTION: The role of adenosine receptors as therapeutic targets for neuroprotection is now widely recognized. Their role, however, in protection against retinal ganglion cell (RGC) apoptosis in glaucoma needs further investigation. Hence, in this review, we look into the possibility of adenosine receptors as potential therapeutic targets by exploring their role in modulating various pathophysiological mechanisms underlying glaucomatous RGC loss.

    AREAS COVERED: This review presents a summary of the adenosine receptor distribution in retina and the cellular functions mediated by them. The major pathophysiological mechanisms such as excitotoxicity, vascular dysregulation, loss of neurotrophic signaling, and inflammatory responses involved in glaucomatous RGC loss are discussed. The literature showing the role of adenosine receptors in modulating these pathophysiological mechanisms is discussed. The literature search was conducted using Pubmed search engine using key words such as 'RGC apoptosis,' 'adenosine,' adenosine receptors' 'retina' 'excitotoxicity,' 'neurotrophins,' 'ischemia', and 'cytokines' individually and in various combinations.

    EXPERT OPINION: Use of adenosine receptor agonists and antagonists, for preservation of the RGCs in glaucomatous eyes independent of the level of intraocular pressure seems a very useful strategy. Future application of this strategy would require appropriate designing of drug formulation for tissue and disease-specific receptor targeting. Furthermore, the modulation of physiological functions and potential adverse effects need further investigations.

    Primary hepatic liposarcoma is an extremely rare mesenchymal tumor that accounts for only 0.1% to 2% of primary malignant liver tumors. Due to its rarity, there is a lack of knowledge about its clinical course, management, and prognosis. Only 15 cases of primary liposarcoma of the liver have been reported since 1973. Among these 15 cases, only two involved primary liver liposarcoma with a pleomorphic subtype. Here we report the third and fourth cases of primary pleomorphic liver liposarcoma. A 57-year-old female presented with abdominal discomfort and progressive abdominal distension for two weeks. Computed tomography (CT) of her abdomen revealed a large well-defined solid nodule mass with an area of necrosis and hemorrhage occupying segment IV-B of the liver. Wide local excision was performed. She had an uneventful recovery and remained well at six months post-treatment. A 65-year-old male presented with an abdominal mass for two-month. CT demonstrated a mass in the left lobe of the liver with mixed soft tissues and fat attenuation. He underwent wide local excision. He was discharged on day three postoperatively. Histological analysis for both cases revealed liposarcoma of the liver with a pleomorphic subtype.

    Importance: Gestational diabetes is associated with adverse maternal and offspring outcomes.

    Objective: To determine whether rates of gestational diabetes among individuals at first live birth changed from 2011 to 2019 and how these rates differ by race and ethnicity in the US.

    Design, Setting, and Participants: Serial cross-sectional analysis using National Center for Health Statistics data for 12 610 235 individuals aged 15 to 44 years with singleton first live births from 2011 to 2019 in the US.

    Exposures: Gestational diabetes data stratified by the following race and ethnicity groups: Hispanic/Latina (including Central and South American, Cuban, Mexican, and Puerto Rican); non-Hispanic Asian/Pacific Islander (including Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipina, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese); non-Hispanic Black; and non-Hispanic White.

    Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcomes were age-standardized rates of gestational diabetes (per 1000 live births) and respective mean annual percent change and rate ratios (RRs) of gestational diabetes in non-Hispanic Asian/Pacific Islander (overall and in subgroups), non-Hispanic Black, and Hispanic/Latina (overall and in subgroups) individuals relative to non-Hispanic White individuals (referent group).

    Results: Among the 12 610 235 included individuals (mean [SD] age, 26.3 [5.8] years), the overall age-standardized gestational diabetes rate significantly increased from 47.6 (95% CI, 47.1-48.0) to 63.5 (95% CI, 63.1-64.0) per 1000 live births from 2011 to 2019, a mean annual percent change of 3.7% (95% CI, 2.8%-4.6%) per year. Of the 12 610 235 participants, 21% were Hispanic/Latina (2019 gestational diabetes rate, 66.6 [95% CI, 65.6-67.7]; RR, 1.15 [95% CI, 1.13-1.18]), 8% were non-Hispanic Asian/Pacific Islander (2019 gestational diabetes rate, 102.7 [95% CI, 100.7-104.7]; RR, 1.78 [95% CI, 1.74-1.82]), 14% were non-Hispanic Black (2019 gestational diabetes rate, 55.7 [95% CI, 54.5-57.0]; RR, 0.97 [95% CI, 0.94-0.99]), and 56% were non-Hispanic White (2019 gestational diabetes rate, 57.7 [95% CI, 57.2-58.3]; referent group). Gestational diabetes rates were highest in Asian Indian participants (2019 gestational diabetes rate, 129.1 [95% CI, 100.7-104.7]; RR, 2.24 [95% CI, 2.15-2.33]). Among Hispanic/Latina participants, gestational diabetes rates were highest among Puerto Rican individuals (2019 gestational diabetes rate, 75.8 [95% CI, 71.8-79.9]; RR, 1.31 [95% CI, 1.24-1.39]). Gestational diabetes rates increased among all race and ethnicity subgroups and across all age groups.

    Conclusions and Relevance: Among individuals with a singleton first live birth in the US from 2011 to 2019, rates of gestational diabetes increased across all racial and ethnic subgroups. Differences in absolute gestational diabetes rates were observed across race and ethnicity subgroups.

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Increasing evidence suggests significant associations between Parkinson disease (PD) and cancer risks. We conducted an updated review of studies that examined the risks of various cancer among PD patients and how this differed when cancer preceded PD diagnosis or PD diagnosis preceded cancer.

    METHODS: Four databases were searched for studies that examined the association between PD and incidence of cancer from database inception to 4 June 2021. Three independent reviewers screened the articles for eligibility and extracted study data. Pooled relative risk with 95% confidence intervals were calculated using a random effects model.

    RESULTS: Forty studies involving 11 case-control studies, two nested case-control studies, 22 cohort studies, and five cross-sectional studies were included. Compared to controls, PD patients had lower risks of lung, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and haematological cancers. Conversely, higher risks of melanoma and brain cancer were noted among PD patients. No association was found between PD and risk of female cancers. Subgroup analysis found negative associations between PD patients and risks of colon cancer, rectal cancer, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

    CONCLUSIONS: Findings from our meta-analysis suggest PD patients had lower risks of lung, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and haematological cancers and increased risks of melanoma and brain cancer. Future research to investigate the underlying mechanisms between PD and cancers is warranted.

    INTRODUCTION: Blended learning utilizes technology with reduced face-to-face time and promotes a student-centred learning environment that excites the learning process. However, studies on blended learning in fixed prosthodontics is still lacking. This study aimed to compare students' performance in easy and difficult level of fixed prosthodontic preclinical projects given by either blended learning or conventional teaching.

    METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 72 s-year dental students, who attended preclinical fixed prosthodontic training. Participants were randomly segregated into conventional teaching (n = 36) and blended learning (n = 36). All participants were evaluated for learning preferences using Visual-Aural-Read/Write-Kinesthetic (VARK) questionnaire and performed a project as their baseline skill assessment. They performed another two preclinical projects (easy and difficult level) after the allocated teaching approach. Learning preferences were analysed using Fisher's exact test and performance in preclinical projects were analysed with an independent t test (significant at p  .05) between groups. No significant differences found between both teaching approaches for easy (p = .319) and difficult projects (p = .339). In the blended learning group, no significant difference was found in both difficulty level of projects (p = .064).

    CONCLUSION: The participants performed equally on both teaching approaches. However, blended learning for preclinical fixed prosthodontics is anticipated as the new norm of learning, especially in the current pandemic with reduced face-to-face time.

    Nano-colloidal systems formulated from amphiphilically-modified polysaccharides (degree of modification 16.6%) are focus of prominent study due to their potential to augment active penetration across the skin. Here we report the synthesis of amphiphilically-modified guar gum (GBE-GG) prepared by grafting with glycidol butyl ether (GBE), which were subsequently formed into nanocarriers and loaded with α-arbutin (22.3% loading). The monodispersed and close-to-spherical nanocarriers (size range 239-297 nm) formed via cross-linking were adequately stable mainly at low temperature (4 °C) under physiological pH condition. α-arbutin was released from GBE-GG NPs in a more sustained manner and the release profiles can be accurately represented by the 1st order kinetic model. In-vitro interactions on immortalised human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cells revealed an increase in biological membrane permeability as well as the absence of cellular toxicity at application pertinent concentrations. No substantial haemolytic activity appeared and flow cytometry analysis revealed effective cellular uptake, suggesting their potential as promising nanocarriers for percutaneous delivery that warrants further comprehensive research.

    OBJECTIVE: To conduct a comprehensive review of the literature on childhood risk factors and their associations with adulthood subclinical and clinical cardiovascular disease (CVD).

    STUDY DESIGN: A systematic search was performed using the MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science databases to identify English-language articles published through June 2018. Articles were included if they were longitudinal studies in community-based populations, the primary exposure occurred during childhood, and the primary outcome was either a measure of subclinical CVD or a clinical CVD event occurring in adulthood. Two independent reviewers screened determined whether eligibility criteria were met.

    RESULTS: There were 210 articles that met the predefined criteria. The greatest number of publications examined associations of clinical risk factors, including childhood adiposity, blood pressure, and cholesterol, with the development of adult CVD. Few studies examined childhood lifestyle factors including diet quality, physical activity, and tobacco exposure. Domains of risk beyond "traditional" cardiovascular risk factors, such as childhood psychosocial adversity, seemed to have strong published associations with the development of CVD.

    CONCLUSIONS: Although the evidence was fairly consistent in direction and magnitude for exposures such as childhood adiposity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, significant gaps remain in the understanding of how childhood health and behaviors translate to the risk of adulthood CVD, particularly in lesser studied exposures like glycemic indicators, physical activity, diet quality, very early life course exposure, and population subgroups.

    INTRODUCTION: The quality characteristics and stability of phenolic by-products from Cola nitida wastes are critical factors for drug formulation and food nutraceutical applications.

    OBJECTIVES: In this study, the effect of electromagnetic-based microwave-reflux extraction on the total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, morphological characteristics, physisorption and chromatographic phenolic profiles were successfully investigated. These physicochemical analyses are often employed in the standardisation of dried herbal and food nutraceutical products.

    MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this study, the electromagnetic-based extraction process was optimised using the Box-Behnken design. The oleoresin bio-products were subsequently characterised to determine the total phenolic content, morphological and microstructural degradation. These analyses were conducted to elucidate the effect of the microwave heating on the C. nitida pod powder.

    RESULTS: From the predicted response, the optimal percentage yield was achieved at 26.20% under 5.39 min of irradiation time, 440 W microwave power and oven temperature of 55°C. Moreover, the rapid estimation of the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity were recorded at 124.84 ± 0.064 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight (d.w.) and 6.93 ± 0.34 μg/mL, respectively. The physicochemical characterisation results from the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and physisorption analyses showed remarkable changes in the micro-surface area (13.66%) characteristics.

    CONCLUSION: The recorded optimal conditions established a basis for future scale-up of microwave extraction parameters with a potential for maximum yield. The physiochemical characterisation revealed the functional characteristics of C. nitida and their tolerance to microwave heating.
