    The dosimetry of small fields has become tremendously important with the advent of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery, where small field segments or very small fields are used to treat tumors. With high dose gradients in the stereotactic radiosurgery or radiotherapy treatment, small field dosimetry becomes challenging due to the lack of lateral electronic equilibrium in the field, x-ray source occlusion, and detector volume averaging. Small volume and tissue-equivalent detectors are recommended to overcome the challenges. With the lack of a perfect radiation detector, studies on available detectors are ongoing with reasonable disagreement and uncertainties. The joint IAEA and AAPM international code of practice (CoP) for small field dosimetry, TRS 483 (Alfonso et al., 2017) provides guidelines and recommendations for the dosimetry of small static fields in external beam radiotherapy. The CoP provides a methodology for field output factor (FOF) measurements and use of field output correction factors for a series of small field detectors and strongly recommends additional measurements, data collection and verification for CyberKnife (CK) robotic stereotactic radiotherapy/radiosurgery system using the listed detectors and more new detectors so that the FOFs can be implemented clinically. The present investigation is focused on using 3D gel along with some other commercially available detectors for the measurement and verification of field output factors (FOFs) for the small fields available in the CK system. The FOF verification was performed through a comparison with published data and Monte Carlo simulation. The results of this study have proved the suitability of an in-house developed 3D polymer gel dosimeter, several commercially available detectors, and Gafchromic films as a part of small field dosimetric measurements for the CK system.

    Graphene oxide (GO)-incorporated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites (PMMA-GO) have demonstrated a wide range of outstanding mechanical, electrical, and physical characteristics. It is of interest to review the synthesis of PMMA-GO nanocomposites and their applications as multifunctional structural materials. The attention of this review is to focus on the radical polymerization techniques, mainly bulk and emulsion polymerization, to prepare PMMA-GO polymeric nanocomposite materials. This review also discusses the effect of solvent polarity on the polymerization process and the types of surfactants (anionic, cationic, nonionic) and initiator used in the polymerization. PMMA-GO nanocomposite synthesis using radical polymerization-based techniques is an active topic of study with several prospects for considerable future improvement and a variety of possible emerging applications. The concentration and dispersity of GO used in the polymerization play critical roles to ensure the functionality and performance of the PMMA-GO nanocomposites.

    BACKGROUND: Childhood immunisation coverage is very low in Nigeria (31%) with Zamfara State being amongst the states with the poorest coverage (<10%). Lack of maternal knowledge, attitude, outcome expectations, self-efficacy, cultural beliefs and assumptions of religious regulations of antenatal mothers towards childhood immunisation are the contributory factors to poor childhood immunisation uptake. This study aims is to develop, implement and evaluate the effects of an immunisation health educational intervention with application of Social Cognitive Theory on pregnant women to improve knowledge, attitude, outcome expectations, self-efficacy, cultural beliefs and assumptions on religious regulations regarding childhood immunization uptake in Federal Medical Centre Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria.

    METHODOLOGY: The study will be a single-blind parallel-group randomised controlled trial, where baseline data will be collected from 392 estimated antenatal mothers, after that they will be evenly randomised using randomly generated permuted block sizes (each containing two intervention and two control assignments). The study participants will be antenatal mothers of ages 18 years and above who are in third trimesters and attending Federal Medical Centre Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria; during the study period and fulfilled all the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The intervention group will undergo five-health education sessions on immunisation, which will be strictly guided by Social Cognitive Theory-based intervention module: while the control group will receive usual care (standard care). Follow-up data will be collected using the same questionnaire at 6-weeks post-delivery, 10-weeks post-delivery and 14-weeks post-delivery. The generalized linear mixed model will be carried-out to determine the overall effect of the intervention after controlling for 14 potential confounding variables. An intention to treat analysis will also be carried-out. Childhood immunisation uptake is the primary outcome while the secondary outcomes are: improved knowledge scores, attitude scores, outcomes expectation, self-efficacy scores, cultural beliefs scores and assumptions on religious regulations scores.

    DISCUSSION: The study will be a randomised controlled trial, that focuses on the effects of an immunisation health educational intervention with application of Social Cognitive Theory on pregnant women to improve knowledge, attitude, outcome expectations, self-efficacy, cultural beliefs and assumptions on religious regulations regarding childhood immunisation uptake in Federal Medical Centre Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria.

    Interactive association of an antifungal drug, climbazole (CBZ) with the carrier protein in bovine circulation, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was explored by fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy along with in silico techniques. The fluorescence and absorption spectral alterations of the protein upon addition of CBZ affirmed the complex foration between CBZ and BSA. The inverse temperature dependence behaviour of the KSV values as well as the hyperchromic result of the protein's absorption signals characterized CBZ-triggered quenching of BSA fluorescence as the static quenching. A weak binding affinity (Ka = 3.12-1.90-× 103 M-1) was reported towards the CBZ-BSA association process. Interpretation of thermodynamic data (entropy change = +14.68 J mol-1 K-1 and enthalpy change = -15.07 kJ mol-1) and in silico analyses anticipated that hydrophobic forces, van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds were the key intermolecular forces in the complex stabilization. Inclusion of CBZ to BSA produced microenvironmental perturbations around Tyr and Trp residues, and also significantly defended temperature-induced destabilization of BSA. The binding locus of CBZ was detected in the proximity of Sudlow's sites I (subdomain IIA) and II (subdomain IIIA) of BSA, exhibiting greater preference towards site II, as revealed by competitive site-marker displacement investigations and in silico analysis. The stability of the CBZ-BSA complex was further validated by the molecular dynamics simulation assessments.

    BACKGROUND: CRISPR/Cas9 is the most powerful and versatile genome-editing tool that permits multiplexed-targeted gene modifications for the genetic enhancement of oil palm. Multiplex genome-editing has recently been developed for modifying multiple loci in a gene or multiple genes in a genome with high precision. This study focuses on the development of high-oleic oil palm, the primary target trait for healthy low-saturated oil. To achieve this, the fatty acid desaturase 2 (FAD2) and palmitoyl-acyl carrier protein thioesterase (PAT) genes, both of which are associated with fatty acid metabolism biosynthesis pathways in oil palm, need to be knocked out. The knockout of FAD2 and PAT leads to an accumulation of oleic acid content in oil palms.

    RESULTS: A total of four single-guide RNAs (sgRNAs) were designed in silico based on the genomic sequences of EgFAD2 and EgPAT. Using robust plant CRISPR/Cas9 vector technology, multiple sgRNA expression cassettes were efficiently constructed into a single-binary CRISPR/Cas9 vector to edit the EgFAD2 and EgPAT genes. Each of the constructed transformation vectors was then delivered into oil palm embryogenic calli using the biolistic, Agrobacterium-mediated, and PEG-mediated protoplast transformation methods. Sequence analysis of PCR products from 15 samples confirmed that mutations were introduced at four target sites of the oil palm EgFAD2 and EgPAT genes. Single- and double-knockout mutants of both genes were generated, with large and small deletions within the targeted regions. Mutations found at EgFAD2 and EgPAT target sites indicate that the Cas9/sgRNA genome-editing system effectively knocked out both genes in oil palm.

    CONCLUSION: This technology is the first in oil palm to use CRISPR/Cas9 genome-editing to target high-oleic-associated genes. These findings showed that multiplex genome-editing in oil palm could be achieved using multiple sgRNAs. Targeted mutations detected establish that the CRISPR/Cas9 technology offers a great potential for oil palm.

    Integrating IoT devices in SCADA systems has provided efficient and improved data collection and transmission technologies. This enhancement comes with significant security challenges, exposing traditionally isolated systems to the public internet. Effective and highly reliable security devices, such as intrusion detection system (IDSs) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS), are critical. Countless studies used deep learning algorithms to design an efficient IDS; however, the fundamental issue of imbalanced datasets was not fully addressed. In our research, we examined the impact of data imbalance on developing an effective SCADA-based IDS. To investigate the impact of various data balancing techniques, we chose two unbalanced datasets, the Morris power dataset, and CICIDS2017 dataset, including random sampling, one-sided selection (OSS), near-miss, SMOTE, and ADASYN. For binary classification, convolutional neural networks were coupled with long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM). The system's effectiveness was determined by the confusion matrix, which includes evaluation metrics, such as accuracy, precision, detection rate, and F1-score. Four experiments on the two datasets demonstrate the impact of the data imbalance. This research aims to help security researchers in understanding imbalanced datasets and their impact on DL SCADA-IDS.

    This paper presents a modified fatigue life model of the Basquin equation using the stress parameter of the magnetic flux leakage signal. Most pipeline steels experience cyclic loading during service and the influence of the load history makes assessing fatigue behaviour more difficult. The magnetic flux leakage signal's response to a uniaxial cyclic test of API X65 steel was measured with eight levels of ultimate tensile stress loads. The influence of dH(y)/dx on fatigue failure was the main concern in this study, the aim being to represent localised stress parameters in the modified Basquin equation. Both fatigue lives, experimental and predicted from the modified Basquin equation, were validated through reliability analysis, producing a 60% value when approaching 1.8 × 105 cycles. The fatigue data from the experiment produced a higher mean-cycle-to-failure value than the prediction data, with slightly different values of 3.37 × 105 and 3.28 × 105. Additionally, the modified Basquin equation's predicted and the experimental fatigue lives were found to have a high R2 correlation value of 0.9022. The Pearson correlation also showed a good relationship between the fatigue lives, with an r value of 0.9801. Finally, the modified Basquin equation based on dH(y)/dx signals provided an accurate and alternative method for durability assessment.

    INTRODUCTION: The authors aim to review the early outcomes of fetostopic laser ablation (FLA) to improve outcomes for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) in an emerging national centre in Malaysia.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 17 monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancies with severe TTTS treated by FLA over 15 months in a single centre by a single operator after performing simulations.

    RESULT: The overall survival rate at day 28 after birth for at least one twin was 76% while the dual-twin survival was 64%. The survival rates at day 28 after birth for at least one twin for stages II, III and IV were 90% vs 40% vs 100% (p=0.054) while dual survival rates were 80% vs 0% vs 100% (p=0.05), respectively. The rate of miscarriage was higher with anterior placentation compared to posterior placentation (33% vs 18%, p=0.660). There was one case of recurrent TTTS and no twin anaemia-polycythaemia sequence post-FLA. The fetal medicine unit in Ipoh is the national centre in Malaysia which covers the whole country, including the western coast of the Borneo Island (Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan) accessible only by air travel. All three cases from Borneo Island had resolved TTTS after FLA and dual neonatal survival at day 28 after birth.

    CONCLUSION: This data from an emerging new fetoscopic laser centre in Malaysia indicates results consistent with the published international learning curve and within the limits of good clinical governance.

    The number of older women are increasing more rapidly and it is estimated that by 2050, the number of elderly women over 60 years old will be 3.2 times that of 2000. Moreover, the number and rate of elderly women in cities where widowed life alone has increased. The study pays attention to the fragile and vulnerable group of urban elderly women. Hence, the purpose of the study to suggest psychological adjustment and guidance for ageing urban women. The study suggests that by adopting protective policies and measures in a targeted manner this problem can be resolved. It is not only a critical responsibility of the state and the government, but also the social responsibility of all sectors of society, including enterprises and non-profit sectors of society, and even every ordinary citizen to support the elderly women for making their rest of lives happier and enjoyable.

    Soft tissue neoplasm is common among patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). We present a case of a middle-aged woman with NF-1 who presented with a painless, insidiously increasing perineal mass for the past eight months. She underwent colonoscopy, computed tomography staging, magnetic resonance imaging of the pelvis, core-needle biopsy, and later wide local excision of left perineum swelling. Histopathological examination showed a high-grade spindle cell sarcoma, which is a rare association among NF-1. Spindle cell sarcoma is a group of malignant soft tissue tumors with locally destructive growth with spindle-shaped neoplastic cells. The solitary spindle cell sarcoma of the perineum is rare, and wide local resection with a clear margin is the only treatment at present-the scarcely available evidence limiting the use of adjuvant chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy.

    Global risk concerns spurred a debate regarding empowering an organization's risk management system. Risk assessment, management, and planning are vital for running a firm, but they are not universal. This research investigates how operational risk management is institutionalized in an organization and reveals best practices from a Malaysian government-linked enterprise (GLC). This phenomenological study interviewed 39 risk management officers, executives, and employees. Data are thematically analyzed. Burawoy's Social Theory uses a case study to integrate micro- and macro-organizational elements. The case company's risk management officers, executives, and employees are involved in seven processual factors, according to the analysis. Strong leadership and external consultants, setting up the apparatus and assigning the task to the person in charge, risk framework, risk diagnostic, monitor and measure, developing and nurturing risk management culture, and consistent risk management enforcement and monitoring could explain the institutionalization process of risk management in the organization. Global and local entities have institutionalized risk management. This phenomenological study helps comprehend the role of risk management institutionalization in corporate risk management. This study contributes to a practical implication such as to the GLC. It suggests that top management support and a standard risk framework are necessary for risk management homogeneity. Leaders and frameworks must address organizational processes and capabilities to ensure risk management consistency. This study contributes to the literature on risk management practices in developing nations. The paper concludes with limitations and research recommendations.

    This study was undertaken to determine the effects of varied salinity regimes on the morphological traits (plant height, number of leaves, number of flowers, fresh and dry weight) and major mineral composition of 13 selected purslane accessions. Most of the morphological traits measured were reduced at varied salinity levels (0.0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 dS m(-1)), but plant height was found to increase in Ac1 at 16 dS m(-1) salinity, and Ac13 was the most affected accession. The highest reductions in the number of leaves and number of flowers were recorded in Ac13 at 32 dS m(-1) salinity compared to the control. The highest fresh and dry weight reductions were noted in Ac8 and Ac6, respectively, at 32 dS m(-1) salinity, whereas the highest increase in both fresh and dry weight was recorded in Ac9 at 24 dS m(-1) salinity compared to the control. In contrast, at lower salinity levels, all of the measured mineral levels were found to increase and later decrease with increasing salinity, but the performance of different accessions was different depending on the salinity level. A dendrogram was also constructed by UPGMA based on the morphological traits and mineral compositions, in which the 13 accessions were grouped into 5 clusters, indicating greater diversity among them. A three-dimensional principal component analysis also confirmed the output of grouping from cluster analysis.

    Caregivers providing care for their family members with oral cancer usually endure the caregiving burden in silence, which affects their quality of life and necessitates the need for supportive care. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the quality of life (QOL) of oral cancer caregivers and their supportive care needs (SCN) in Malaysia. The Malaysian versions of the Caregiver Oncology Quality of Life Questionnaire (M-CarGOQoL) and the Comprehensive Needs Assessment Tool for Cancer Caregivers (M-CNAT-C) were self-administered by 56 family caregivers of oral cancer patients from five tertiary hospitals throughout Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak between October and December 2021. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were employed, and the significance level was set at p < 0.05. The mean score for the QOL of caregivers was 76.16 ± 16.01, with the lowest scores in the psychological well-being (64.87 ± 30.12) and self-esteem (68.64 ± 28.29) domains. The mean score for SCN of caregivers was 36.42 ± 24.16, with the highest scores in the healthcare staff (58.44 ± 33.80) and information (55.35 ± 29.98) domains. The correlation between QOL and SCN was moderately inversed, (r(54) = 0.58, p < 0.01). There was a significant effect of caregiving duration (<3 h/day versus >3 h/day) on the combined dependent variables (QOL and SCN), F(2, 53) = 5.006, p < 0.01, partial η2 = 0.16. QOL and caregiving duration accounted for a significant 43% of SCN, R2 = 0.43, adjusted R2 = 0.41, F(2, 53) = 20.32, p < 0.01. In conclusion, oral cancer caregivers with poorer QOL have higher SCN. It is recommended that oral cancer caregivers be recognized by healthcare providers in order to deliver holistic patient care.

    BACKGROUND: No gold standard has yet been established for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection. A multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) was developed in this study for rapid, sensitive and specific detection of H. pylori from gastric biopsies.

    METHODS: H. pylori infections were determined by in-house rapid urease test (iRUT), culture, histology and multiplex PCR.

    RESULTS: A total of 140 (60.9%) from 230 patients were positive for H. pylori infection. H. pylori were detected in 9.6% (22/230), 17% (39/230), 12.6% (29/230) and 60% (138/230) of biopsy specimens by culture, iRUT, histology and mPCR, respectively. mPCR identified H. pylori infection in 100% of biopsies with positive histology and culture. All biopsies with positive iRUT yielded positive PCR except two cases. mPCR also detected H. pylori in additional 116, 101 and 109 biopsies that were negative by culture, iRUT and histology, respectively. Positive samples by mPCR showed lower average in H. pylori density, activity and inflammation scores. The Indians showed the highest prevalence of H. pylori infection compared to the Chinese and the Malays. In addition, Chinese patients with older age were significantly infected compared to other ethnicities.

    CONCLUSION: PCR was able to detect the highest numbers of positive cases although the lowest average scores were recorded in the activity, inflammatory and H. pylori density.

    Introduction Infection with SARS-CoV-2 begins in the lower respiratory tract, but COVID-19 often involves the renal system, resulting in serum electrolyte imbalance. Monitoring serum electrolyte levels and parameters of liver and kidney function is essential to understand disease prognosis. Objectives This study aimed to determine the effect of imbalances in serum electrolytes and other parameters on COVID-19 severity. Material and method This retrospective study comprised 241 patients, ages 14 years and older, including 186 patients who were moderately affected and 55 who were categorized as severely affected by COVID-19. Serum electrolytes (sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and chloride (Cl-)) and biomarkers of kidney and liver function (creatinine and alanine aminotransferase (ALT)) were measured and correlated with disease severity. This research was conducted among admitted patients of Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital designated into two groups based on retrospective hospital records. Individuals with moderate illness had evidence of lower respiratory tract infection (cough, cold, breathless, etc.) during clinical assessment or imaging (chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan of the lungs) and have an oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2) ≥ 94% on room air at sea level. The severely ill group involved individuals with SpO2 ≤94% on room air at sea level and respiratory rate ≥ 30 breaths/minute, and critically ill patients are those who needed mechanical ventilation or required intensive care unit (ICU) care. This categorization was based on the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Treatment Guidelines (https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/about-the-guidelines/whats-new/). Results Average Na+ and creatinine increased by 2.30 parts (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.20, 4.81, P = 0.041) and 0.35 units (95% CI = 0.03, 0.68, P = 0.043) in severe cases compared with moderate cases. Older participants had relatively Na+ lowered to -0.06 parts (95% CI = -0.12, -0.001, P = 0.045), significant Cl- reduction by 0.09 units (95% CI = -0.14, -0.04, P = 0.001), and ALT by 0.47 units (95% CI = -0.88, -0.06, P = 0.024), whereas serum creatinine was increased by 0.01 parts (95% CI = 0.001, 0.02, P = 0.024). The creatinine and ALT of COVID-19 participants were significantly higher in males by 0.34 units and 23.2 units, respectively, compared with females. In severe COVID-19 cases compared with moderate cases, the risks of hypernatremia, elevated chloride levels, and elevated serum creatinine levels were increased by 2.83-fold (95% CI = 1.26, 6.36, P = 0.012), 5.37-fold (95% CI = 1.90, 15.3, P = 0.002), and 2.00-fold (95% CI = 1.08, 4.31, P = 0.039), respectively. Conclusion Serum electrolyte and biomarker levels can serve as good indicators of the condition and disease prognosis of patients with COVID-19. Our purpose in this study was to determine the association between serum electrolyte imbalance and disease severity. We collected data from ex post facto hospital records and did not intend to assess the mortality rate. Consequently, this study expects that the prompt diagnosis of electrolyte disparity or disturbance possibly minimizes COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality.

    The worldwide spreading of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has posed a serious threat to health, economic, environmental, and social aspects of human lives. Currently, there are no approved treatments that can effectively block the virus although several existing antimalarial and antiviral agents have been repurposed and allowed use during the pandemic under the emergency use authorization (EUA) status. This review gives an updated overview of the antiviral effects of phytochemicals including alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids against the COVID-19 virus and their mechanisms of action. Search for natural lead molecules against SARS-CoV-2 has been focusing on virtual screening and in vitro studies on phytochemicals that have shown great promise against other coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV. Until now, there is limited data on in vivo investigations to examine the antiviral activity of plants in SARS-CoV-2-infected animal models and the studies were performed using crude extracts. Further experimental and preclinical investigations on the in vivo effects of phytochemicals have to be performed to provide sufficient efficacy and safety data before clinical studies can be performed to develop them into COVID-19 drugs. Phytochemicals are potential sources of new chemical leads for the development of safe and potent anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents.

    Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a form of secondary lymphedema that is characterized by abnormal swelling of one or both arms due to the accumulation of lymph fluid in the interstitial tissue spaces, resulting from obstruction of the lymphatic vessels due to surgery insults, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy. Due to the multifactorial nature of this condition, the pathogenesis of secondary lymphedema remains unclear and the search for molecular factors associated with the condition is ongoing. This study aimed to identify serum microRNAs and adipokines associated with BCRL. Blood was collected from 113 breast cancer survivors and processed to obtain serum for small RNA-sequencing (BCRL vs. non-BCRL, n = 7 per group). MicroRNAs that were differentially expressed (fold change >1.5, p < 0.05) between lymphedema cases and those without lymphedema were further quantified in a validation cohort through quantitative reverse transcription PCR (BCRL n = 16, non-BCRL, n = 83). Leptin and adiponectin levels were measured in a combined cohort (BCRL n = 23, non-BCRL n = 90) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Two of the most significantly upregulated microRNAs, miR-199a-3p and miR-151a-3p, were strongly correlated with the onset of lymphedema and diabetes mellitus in the BCRL group. Leptin levels were higher in the BCRL cohort compared to the non-BCRL cohort (p < 0.05). A metabolic syndrome biomarker, the adiponectin/leptin ratio, was found to be lower in the BCRL group than in the non-BCRL group (median: 0.28 vs. 0.41, p < 0.05). Extensive studies on the mechanisms of the identified microRNAs and association of leptin with arm lymphedema may provide new insights on the potential biomarkers for lymphedema that should be followed up in a prospective cohort study.

    Objective: We aimed to meta-analyze the effects of combined upper and lower limb plyometric training (ULLPT) on physical fitness attributes in athletes. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, PubMed, and SCOPUS, for up to 13 August 2022. Controlled studies with baseline and follow-up measures were included if they examined the effects of ULLPT on at least one measure of physical fitness indices in athletes. A random effects meta-analysis was performed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. Results: Fifteen moderate-to-high-quality studies with 523 participants aged 12−22.4 years were included in the analyses. Small to large (ES = 0.42−1.66; p = 0.004 to <0.001) effects were noted for upper and lower body muscle power, linear sprint speed, upper and lower body muscle strength, agility, and flexibility, while no significant effects on static and dynamic balance were noted (ES = 0.44−0.10; all p > 0.05). Athletes’ sex, age, and training program variables had no modulator role on the effects of ULLPT in available data sets. Conclusions: ULLPT induces distinct neuro-muscular adaptations in the upper and lower body musculature and is an efficient method for enhancing athletes’ physical fitness.

    Compatibility of each strain in a multi-strain probiotic (MSP), along with its properties, becomes a strong base for its formulation. In this study, single-strain probiotics (SSPs) and multi-strain probiotics (MSPs) were evaluated in vitro for strain compatibility, microbial antagonism, biofilm formation capacity, and stress tolerance. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens L11, Enterococcus hirae LAB3, and Lysinibacillus fusiformis SPS11 were chosen as MSP1 candidates because they showed much stronger antagonism to Aeromonas hydrophila and Streptococcus agalactiae than a single probiotic. MSP 2 candidates were Lysinibacillus fusiformis strains SPS11, A1, and Lysinibacillus sphaericus strain NAS32 because the inhibition zone produced by MSP 2 against Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio parahaemolyticus was much higher than that produced by its constituent SSPs. MSP1 in the co-culture assay reduced (p < 0.05) A. hydrophila count from 9.89 ± 0.1 CFU mL−1 to 2.14 ± 0.2 CFU mL−1. The biofilm formation of both MSPs were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than its constituent SSPs and the pathogens. The SSPs in both MSPs generally showed resistance to high temperatures (80, 90, and 100 °C) and a wide range of pH (2 to 9). This in vitro assessment study demonstrates that MSP1 and 2 have the potential to be further explored as multi-strain probiotics on selected aquatic species.
