Herein, we report the effect of synthesis temperature on the morphologies, optical and electronic properties of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanostructures. The MgO nanostructures were synthesized at different temperatures, i.e., 100 °C, 300 °C, and 600 °C by simple chemical reaction process and their morphology, particle size, optical, and electrical properties were examined by different techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-Vis. spectroscopy. The morphological investigations revealed that various morphologies of MgO nanostructures, i.e., nanoparticles, nanosheet networks, and nanoneedles were synthesized at 100 °C, 300 °C, and 600 °C. The XRD results confirmed that with increasing the synthesis temperature, the crystallinity of the synthesized nanostructures increases. Further, the dielectric properties and AC conductivity at various frequencies for MgO nanostructures were studied which revealed that the dielectric losses decrease with increase in frequency and temperature. In addition, the observed band gap decreases from 4.89 eV to 4.438 eV (100 °C to 600 °C) representing its increase in the conductivity.

Nanostructure materials are of interest in last few decades due to their unique size-dependent physio-chemical properties. In this paper, zinc oxide (ZnO) and barium doped ZnO nanodisks (NDs) were synthesized using sonochemical method and characterized by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-vis absorption and dielectric measurements. The XRD and FTIR studies confirm the crystalline nature of ZnO NDs, and the average crystallite size was found to be ~25 nm for pure ZnO and ~22 nm for Ba doped ZnO NDs. SEM study confirmed the spherical shaped ZnO NDs with average sizes in the range of 20-30 nm. The maximum absorbance was obtained in the 200-500 nm regions with a prominent peak absorbance were observed by UV-vis spectra. The corresponding band gap for ZnO NDs and Ba doped ZnO NDs were calculated using Tauc's plot and was found to be 3.12 and 3.04, respectively. The conductivity and dielectric measurements as a function of frequency have been studied.

UV-curable hyperbranched urethane acrylate (HBPUA) from oleic acid of palm oil has been synthesized through a medium aided by p-toluene sulfonic acid as a catalyst. This mixture was then used as the core (HBP) and reacted with palm oil oleic acid to form the hyperbranched polyol (HBP-1). HBPUA was prepared by reacting HBP-1 resin with diisocyanate and hydroxyl-containing acrylate monomer with the presence of 0.1-2 wt% dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. The reaction was confirmed by several analytical data i.e. hydroxyl value (OHV), Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analyses. The HBPUA was easily curable when subjected to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Haruan or Channa striatus is source of protein that is widely consumed in the region and its extract
is well known for having medical values. It is of great advantage if this product could be taken
orally rather than by injection because the oral route of drug delivery is still preferred by the vast
majority of patients. However protein and peptides can be denatured or degraded by the acidic pH
of the stomach and the presence of endogenous enzymes. In order to protect or prevent digestion
and degradation of the protein in the stomach and to ensure the protein reaches the gastro
intestinal (GI) tract, Carboxymethyl Starch (CMS) nanogel system was developed using electron
irradiation method. However stability of HTE during the irradiation process needed to be studied
before being developed further. In this study, the HTE was irradiated using electron beams. Its
stability was analysed in terms of physical and chemical changes by looking at colour difference,
melting point by using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and molecular bonds by using
Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) respectively. The results of this study were that no apparent
colour difference was observed with HTE before and after irradiation. These observations were
supported by the FTIR and DSC results that showed that there were no changes in molecular bonds
and melting point, compared between no irradiation and irradiation HTE during electron
irradiation up to 10 kGy. Statistically the test showed no significant difference at p < 0.005 between
    melting temperatures.

This study investigates effects from different drying methods (vacuum oven dried vs. freeze dried) on the rheological, functional and structural properties of chicken skin gelatin compared to bovine gelatin. Vacuum oven dried chicken skin samples showed a higher gelatin yield (12.86%) than freeze-dried samples (9.25%). The latter showed a higher melting temperature (32.64oC) and superior foaming capacity (176%) as well as foaming stability (166.67%). Vacuum oven dried samples demonstrated greater fat binding capacity (5.5 ml/g) and emulsion stability (55.79%). There were no significant differences (p >0.05) in emulsion and water holding capacity for three gelatins. Bovine gelatin did hold the lowest of all functional properties studied. A Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrum analysis of chicken skin gelatin under both drying methods presented structures similar to those of bovine gelatin. Collectively, this findings indicated no significant differences (p >0.05) in rheological, functional and structural properties for chicken skin gelatins prepared by either drying method. Hence, to save costs and maintain gelatin quality, vacuum oven drying offers potential as an alternative means of production.

This paper reports on the extraction, partial characterization and the potential application of crude polysaccharides from defatted coconut residue as a prebiotic. The coconut residue was defatted and extracted to obtain the crude polysaccharides and its physicochemical properties were determined. The crude polysaccharides were assessed for monosaccharide composition, total carbohydrate content, reducing sugar concentration and protein content determination. The functional group and structural elucidation of crude polysaccharides was also done using Fourier transform infrared spectra analysis. The product was then subjected to artificial human gastric juice treatment to determine digestibility. Finally, an in vitro proliferation and acid production by two probiotic bacteria namely Lactobacillus casei Shirota and Lactobacillus bulgaricus were included in this study. It was found that the defatted coconut residue contained ash (0.54%), moisture (55.42%), protein (1.69%), crude fat (17.26%) and carbohydrate (25.73%). The percentage of crude polysaccharides extracted was 0.73 ± 0.04. The two fractions of monosaccharides obtained were glucose and fructose. Total carbohydrate content of DCR was 13.35% (w/v). The quantitative value of the reducing sugars obtained was 20.71%. Protein content in the crude polysaccharides was 0.009% and the peaks which indicated the presence of protein were observed at around 1640 cm(-1) (amide I) and 1530 cm(-1) (amide II). DCR crude polysaccharides were highly resistant (88%) to hydrolysis when subjected to artificial human gastric juice. The product was found to markedly stimulate two tested probiotics to proliferate and produce organic acids. All the above findings are supportive of the fact that polysaccharides extracted from DCR, an industrial waste, have a vast potential to be exploited as novel prebiotics.

The potential combination of two nondestructive techniques, that is, Raman spectroscopy (RS) and attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy with Pearson's product moment correlation (PPMC) coefficient (r) and principal component analysis (PCA) to determine the actual source of red gel pen ink used to write a simulated threatening note, was examined. Eighteen (18) red gel pens purchased from Japan and Malaysia from November to December 2014 where one of the pens was used to write a simulated threatening note were analyzed using RS and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, respectively. The spectra of all the red gel pen inks including the ink deposited on the simulated threatening note gathered from the RS and ATR-FTIR analyses were subjected to PPMC coefficient (r) calculation and principal component analysis (PCA). The coefficients r = 0.9985 and r = 0.9912 for pairwise combination of RS and ATR-FTIR spectra respectively and similarities in terms of PC1 and PC2 scores of one of the inks to the ink deposited on the simulated threatening note substantiated the feasibility of combining RS and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy with PPMC coefficient (r) and PCA for successful source determination of red gel pen inks. The development of pigment spectral library had allowed the ink deposited on the threatening note to be identified as XSL Poppy Red (CI Pigment Red 112).

In vitro Lead (Pb(2+)) binding capacity of two probiotic bacteria strains, namely Bifidobacterium longumBB79 and Lactobacillus pentosusITA23, was assessed following incubation with the intestinal contents (IC) of laying hens. Results of this study demonstrated that IC treatment significantly enhanced (P<0.01) Pb(2+) binding capacity of both bacterial strains. Fourier transform infrared analysis indicated that several functional groups (O-H or N-H, C-H, C˭O, C-O, and C-O-C) on the bacteria cell wall involved in metal ion binding were altered after IC incubation, and new groups appeared between the 3700cm(-1) and 4000cm(-1)bands. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that after incubation with IC, unidentified IC components created new binding sites on the bacterial cell surface. These particles also changed the mechanism of Pb(2+) binding of the two strains from intracellular accumulation to extracellular adsorption.

exhibits extensive first pass metabolism with poor oral bioavailability (27%–50%) limiting its therapeutic efficiency. The present study involved an attempt to enhance its aqueous solubility by formulating as solid dispersions (SDs) using sodium starch glycollate (SSG) as a carrier. The dispersions were formulated by dispersion method and evaluated by phase solubility, drug content, in vitro release and mathematical modelling. Solid state characterisation of samples was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), near infrared (NIR), Raman analysis and wettability studies. The phase solubility and thermodynamic parameters indicated the spontaneity and solubilisation effect of carrier. The release rate from the dispersions was higher than pure drug and found to increase with an increase in carrier content. The optimised dispersions were selected based on release studies, profiles and dissolution parameters. XRD, DSC, FTIR, NIR and Raman analysis proved the crystallinity reduction, changes in crystal quality and compatibility between drug and carriers. Wettability studies proved the increased wettability in selected dispersions. Based on the findings, possible mechanisms that would have contributed to dissolution enhancement of CLZ were suggested. Such findings could be extrapolated to enhance the aqueous solubility of other poorly water-soluble drugs.

In this work, hydrogels were prepared from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone(VP) by Electron Beam irradiation in the presence of N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) as a crosslinkingagent. The parameters studied include stirring time and percentage of crosslinking agent. Hydrogels werecharacterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM). VP and BIS were found be effective as reinforcement materials to improve the properties ofCMC. Meanwhile, the optimum conditions were 5% BIS and 3 hours of stirring time. The gel fractionincreased when irradiation dose was increased. FTIR confirmed the crosslinking reaction between CMCand VP after the irradiation process by using BIS as the crosslinking agent. TGA thermograms showedchanges in the thermal properties of CMC-VP hydrogels in the presence of different amounts of BIS.

Polyaniline (PANI) and polyaniline composites with aluminium oxide (Al2O3) were prepared using the in situ polymerization method. The composites were then blended with acrylic paint and applied to carbon steel panels. The coated steel panels were evaluated for corrosion using the immersion test technique. The results revealed that the steel panels coated with polyaniline composites and with Al2O3 containing coatings had small corrosion as compared to the bare sample and the samples coated with polyaniline and paint alone. The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). In addition, the morphology of the finished samples was observed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This novel composite was used as a paint pigment for enhancing the barrier properties and the paint protectable against aggressive ions. Meanwhile, corrosion was evaluated through visual monitoring using a digital camera after 60 days of fully immersion test in 5% NaCl. The weight loss method was also used to evaluate corrosion.

In this study, the physical, morphological, mechanical and thermal properties of furfuryl alcohol/2-ethylhexyl methacrylate/halloysite nanoclay wood polymer nanocomposites (FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNCs) were investigated. FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNCs were prepared via an impregnation method and the properties of the nanocomposites were characterized through the weight percent gain, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), three-point flexural test, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and moisture absorption test. The weight percent gain in the 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC was the highest compared with the raw wood (RW) and other WPNCs. The FT-IR results confirmed that polymerization took place in the nanocomposites, especially 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC, which had a reduced amount of hydroxyl groups. The SEM results revealed that the 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC had the smoothest and most uniform surface among all of the nanocomposites. The 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC showed the highest flexural strength and modulus of elasticity. The results revealed that the storage modulus and loss modulus of the FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNCs were higher and the tan δ of FA-co-EHMA-HNC WNPCs was lower compared with the RW. The FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNCs exhibited the higher thermal stability in the TGA and DSC analysis. The 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC exhibited remarkably lower moisture absorption compared with the RW. Overall, this study proved that the ratio 50:50 FA-co-EHMA ratio was the most suitable for introduction in the in the RW.

The chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/TiO2 composite was synthesized. Two different degrees of deacetylation of chitosan were prepared by hydrolysis to compare the effectiveness of them. The composite was analyzed via field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, weight loss test and adsorption study. The FTIR and XRD results proved the interaction among chitosan, PVA and TiO2 without any chemical reaction. It was found that, chitosan with higher degree of deacetylation has better stability. Furthermore, it also showed that higher DD of chitosan required less time to reach equilibrium for methyl orange. The adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fitted well for isotherm study. Adsorption capacity was higher for the composite containing chitosan with higher DD. The dye removal rate was independent of the dye's initial concentration. The adsorption capacity was increased with temperature and it was found from reusability test that the composite containing chitosan with higher DD is more reusable. It was notable that adsorption capacity was even after 15 runs. Therefore, chitosan/PVA/TiO2 composite can be a very useful material for dye removal.

This paper investigates the effect of the ratio of ammonium nitrate (AN) on the structural, microstructural, magnetic, and alternating current (AC) conductivity properties of barium hexaferrite (BaFe12O19). The BaFe12O19 were prepared by using the salt melt method. The samples were synthesized using different powder-to-salt weight ratio variations (1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6 and 1:7) of BaCO₃ + Fe₂O₃ and ammonium nitrate salt. The NH₄NO₃ was melted on a hot plate at 170 °C. A mixture of BaCO₃ and Fe₂O₃ were added into the NH₄NO₃ melt solution and stirred for several hours using a magnetic stirrer under a controlled temperature of 170 °C. The heating temperature was then increased up to 260 °C for 24 hr to produce an ash powder. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) results show the intense peak of BaFe12O19 for all the samples and the presence of a small amount of the impurity Fe₂O₃ in the samples, at a ratio of 1:5 and 1:6. From the Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectra, the band appears at 542.71 cm - 1 and 432.48 cm - 1 , which corresponding to metal⁻oxygen bending and the vibration of the octahedral sites of BaFe12O19. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images show that the grains of the samples appear to stick each other and agglomerate at different masses throughout the image with the grain size 5.26, 5.88, 6.14, 6.22, and 6.18 µm for the ratios 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6, and 1:7 respectively. From the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis, the magnetic properties of the sample ratio at 1:3 show the highest value of coercivity Hc of 1317 Oe, a saturation magnetization Ms of 91 emu/g, and a remnant Mr of 44 emu/g, respectively. As the temperature rises, the AC conductivity is increases with an increase in frequency.

The development of new adsorbent has rapidly increased in order to overcome the problem
of waste water treatment from heavy metal pollution. The ability of nickel (II)-ion imprinted
polymer (Ni-IIP) as an alternative adsorbent for the removal of nickel ion from aqueous has
been investigated. The Ni-IIP was prepared via bulk polymerization by using functional
monomers; methylacrylic acid (MAA) with picolinic acid as a co-monomer. Nickel ion was
used as template, AIBN as initiator and EGDMA as cross-linking agent. Non-imprinted control
polymer (NIP) was prepared in the same manner as Ni-IIP but in the absence of nickel
ion. The resultant of Ni-IIP and NIP were characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared
(FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Result showed that, the adsorption
of nickel ion onto Ni-IIP increased as the adsorbent dosage increased and contact
time is prolonged. The adsorption isotherm model for Ni-IIP and NIP were fitted well with
Freundlich and Langmuir, respectively. Kinetic study for both Ni-IIP and NIP were followed
the pseudo-second order, indicates that the rate-limiting step is the surface adsorption that
involves chemisorption. Selectivity studies showed that the distribution coefficient of Ni2+
was higher compared to Zn2+, Mg2+ and Pb2+. The present work has successfully synthesized
Ni-IIP particles with good potential in recognition of Ni2+ ions in an aqueous medium.

INTRODUCTION: Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) has been proven as an effective treatment for unresectable liver tumor. In this study, neutron activated, 153Sm-labeled microspheres were developed as an alternative to 90Y-labeled microspheres for hepatic radioembolization. 153Sm has a theranostic advantage as it emits both therapeutic beta and diagnostic gamma radiations simultaneously, in comparison to the pure beta emitter, 90Y.

METHODS: Negatively charged acrylic microspheres were labeled with 152Sm ions through electrostatic interactions. In another formulation, the Sm-labeled microsphere was treated with sodium carbonate solution to form the insoluble 152Sm carbonate (152SmC) salt within the porous structures of the microspheres. Both formulations were neutron-activated in a research reactor. Physicochemical characterization, gamma spectrometry, and radiolabel stability tests were carried out to study the performance and stability of the microspheres.

RESULTS: The Sm- and SmC-labeled microspheres remained spherical and smooth, with a mean size of 35 µm before and after neutron activation. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that the functional groups of the microspheres remained unaffected after neutron activation. The 153Sm- and 153SmC-labeled microspheres achieved activity of 2.53 ± 0.08 and 2.40 ± 0.13 GBq·g-1, respectively, immediate after 6 h neutron activation in the neutron flux of 2.0 × 1012 n·cm-2·s-1. Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and gamma spectrometry showed that no elemental and radioactive impurities were present in the microspheres after neutron activation. The retention efficiency of 153Sm in the 153SmC-labeled microspheres was excellent (~99% in distilled water and saline; ~97% in human blood plasma), which was higher than the 153Sm-labeled microspheres (~95% and ~85%, respectively).

CONCLUSION: 153SmC-labeled microspheres have demonstrated excellent properties for potential application as theranostic agents for hepatic radioembolization.
