MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study conducted to identify factors predicting clinical outcomes of CAPD associated peritonitis over a four-year period in Taiping Hospital, Malaysia.
RESULTS: A total of 109 episodes of CAPD associated peritonitis in 54 patients was enrolled with a median age being 56.5 years. In all 43.1% of these were complicated peritonitis. About half (n=54, 49.5%) of the peritonitis was caused by a single gram-positive organism. Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) and Escherichia coli was the most often isolated gram-positive and gram-negative microorganism, respectively. We observed that less likelihood of developing complicated peritonitis in presence of abdominal pain (Odd ratio, OR 0.25, 95% confidence interval, 95%CI: 0.10, 0.63). In contrast, presence of more than one previous episode of peritonitis (OR 2.79, 95%CI: 1.11, 7.04) and previous migration and readjustment of Tenkchoff catheter (OR 7.48, 95%CI: 1.39, 40.41), were factors significantly associated with complicated peritonitis.
CONCLUSION: Presence of abdominal pain, more than one previous episode of peritonitis, and previous migration and readjustment of Tenkchoff catheter, were found as significant factors in predicting clinical outcomes of CAPD associated peritonitis.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was performed on 5 databases from inception up to 31 December 2019. These interactions were classified depending on the likelihood of interaction and supporting evidences.
RESULTS: A total of 149 articles describing 78 herbs, food or dietary supplements were reported to interact with warfarin. These reports described potentiation with 45 (57.7%) herbs, food or dietary supplements while 23 (29.5%) reported inhibition and 10 (12.8%) reported limited impact on warfarin pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Twenty unique herb and dietary supplements also reported to result in minor bleeding events, such as purpura and gum bleeding as well as major events such as intracranial bleeding that led to death.
CONCLUSION: While most food, herbs and supplements can be safely taken in moderation, healthcare professionals should be aware of the increased risk of bleeding when taking several food and herbs. These include Chinese wolfberry, chamomile tea, cannabis, cranberry, chitosan, green tea, Ginkgo biloba, ginger, spinach, St. John's Wort, sushi and smoking tobacco. Patients should be counselled to continue to seek advice from their healthcare professionals when starting any new herbs, food or supplement.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 30 undergraduate dental students were shown a CEREC demonstration video. Each operator then captured a digital impression using the intra-oral scanner, and a crown was subsequently milled. All participants underwent a training course before repeating the process. Marginal discrepancy for each crown on its abutment tooth was measured before and after training using a stereomicroscope and was evaluated using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The duration taken for the process was recorded before and after training and evaluated using paired t-test.

RESULTS: A combined process of microwave pretreatment and solvent extraction to mill crude palm oil, without introducing water or steam, is described. An excellent yield (up to 30%) of oil was obtained with pretreatment in a 42 L, 1000 W and 2450 MHz microwave oven followed by hexane extraction. The optimum conditions (10 min microwave pretreatment and 12 h solvent extraction) yielded an oil with a low free fatty acid content (<1.0%) and an acceptable anisidine value (<3.0 meq kg(-1) ). The oil had a fatty acid composition not resembling those of conventional crude palm oil and crude palm kernel oil. In the pretreatment, the leached oil had 6.3% lauric acid whereas the solvent extracted oil had only 1.5% lauric acid. Among the factors affecting the oil quality, microwave pretreatment affected the oil quality significantly; however, an optimised duration that would ensure high efficiency in solvent extraction also resulted in ruptured fruitlets, although not to the extent of causing excessive oxidation. In fact, microwave pretreatment should exceed 12 min; after only 15 min, the oil had 1-methylcyclopentanol (12.96%), 1-tetradecanol (9.44%), 1-nonadecene (7.22%), nonanal (7.13%) and 1-tridecene (5.09%), which probably arose from the degradation of fibres.
CONCLUSION: Microwave pretreatment represents an alternative milling process for crude palm oil compared with conventional processes in the omission of wet treatment with steam. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.
