    Composite resins Amaris is claimed to have hydrophobic effect which minimizes the staining intake. This study is to investigate the colour stability of Amaris compared to Filtek Z250 in coffee solution. Sixty discs of composite resins Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE) and Amaris (Voco) with diameter of 5mm and depth of 2mm were fabricated by packing in a drinking straw and sectioned with hard tissue cutter (Exakt, Japan). The surfaces of the specimens were polished with Sof-Lex disc before each group of the samples is immersed in coffee solution. They were kept in the solution for 4 days at 370C and assessed at the period of 2 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, and 4 days.     The water decoction of Labisia pumila var. alata is used traditionally in childbirth, as well as for the treatment of flatulence, dysentery, dysmenorrhoea and join pains. This study was carried out to determine the best method and optimum parameters of aqueous axtraction of the leaves and roots of this species. The laboratory methos esed were maceration, ddecoction, reflux and Saxhlet, whereas the parameters studied were temperature, duration and pH of axtraction. The yields and thin layer chromatographic profiles of the freeze-dried extracts were analysed. The study showed that in general the percentage yields of the water soluble extracts were higher for the roots than the leaves, as well as the extracts obtained from heating than those obtained at room temperature. The most effective extraction parameters for L. pumila var. alata were as follows:maceration (25 C, at least 6 hr), decoction (60 C, not exceeding 10 min) and reflux (100 C, not exceeding 4 hr). Saxhlet method was found to be the least effective. The pH analysis had shown the possibility of degradation of some of the phytochemicals at extreme pH values of 1,2 and 14.

    Light intensity output is one of the determinants for adequate curing of visible light-cured materials. The aim of this survey was to evaluate the light intensity outputs (LIOs) of light curing units (LCUs) in dental clinics of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) and School of Dental Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The respective LIOs of all functioning Quartz Tungsten Halogen (QTH) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) LCUs were tested using two light radiometers. For cordless LED LCUs, the testing procedure was done in situ and after being fully charged. Statistical analysis using Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon signed ranks tests were performed to compare the LIOs between groups and between the LIOs of in situ and post-charged cordless LED LCUs, respectively.     Objectives: The objectives of the study were to assess: i) the staining susceptibility of composite resins, ii) the ability of whitening toothpastes in removing stains from composite resins.
    Materials and Methods: Thirty specimens from each composite resins: Filtek Z350 (3M ESPE), Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE) and Beautifil (Shofu Inc.) were fabricated. After polishing, specimens were immersed in coffee for 3 days. Specimens were then brushed twice a day for 2 weeks using Colgate Total (Colgate-Palmolive, control group), Colgate Advanced Whitening (Colgate- Palmolive, test group) and Darlie All Shiny White (Hawley & Hazel Chemical Co., test group). Colour changes (?E*) were measured using Spectrophotometer at baseline, after coffee immersion and after brushing. Results were statistically analyzed using one way ANOVA and Tukey’s test.
    Results: There was significant difference in terms of colour changes for Filtek Z350, Filtek Z250 and Beautifil after coffee immersion (P0.05).
    Conclusions: Filtek Z350 was able to resist staining by coffee better than Filtek Z250 and Beautifil. The whitening toothpastes did not offer added advantage in terms of ability to remove stains compared to ordinary toothpaste.

    Dalam makalah ini, masalah aliran genangan dalam bendalir mikrokutub terhadap permukaan mencancang yang telap dengan fluks haba boleh ubah dipertimbangkan. Dengan menggunakan penjelmaan keserupaan, persamaan asas yang menakluk aliran bendalir dan pemindahan haba dijelmakan kepada satu set persamaan perbezaan biasa. Persamaan yang dijelmakan tertakluk kepada syarat-syarat sempadan yang berkaitan kemudiannya diselesaikan secara berangka menggunakan kaedah tembakan. Kesan parameter sedutan/semburan fw ke atas profil halaju dan suhu serta pekali geseran kulit dan nombor Nusselt setempat diperoleh dan dibincangkan. Keputusan berangka menunjukkan bahawa penyelesaian dual wujud dalam kedua-dua aliran membantu dan aliran menentang.

    Teknik reka bentuk untuk meningkatkan gandaan bagi menambah baik prestasi antena tompok mikrojalur konvensional dibincangkan. Kaedah suapan prob tersongsang jalur lebar bagi antena tompok mikrojalur berbilang lubang alur bertindan dicadangkan. Reka bentuk tersebut menggabungkan beberapa teknik kontemporari iaitu kaedah suapan prob, struktur tompok tersongsang dan tompok berbilang lubang alur bertindan. Kesan komposit daripada penyatuan pelbagai teknik ini dan dengan memperkenalkan bentuk elemen tompok yang baru, memberikan profil yang rendah, jalur lebar yang lebih luas, gandaan tinggi dan elemen antena yang padat. Keputusan menunjukkan peningkatan gandaan di mana gandaan maksimum adalah 11.42 dBi. Reka bentuk ini sesuai untuk aplikasi tata susunan terutama untuk stesen tapak.

    This study aims to synthesize and characterize lignin-decorated zinc oxide nanoparticles before incorporating them into resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) to improve their anticariogenic potential and mechanical properties (shear bond strength and microhardness). Probe sonication was used to synthesize lignin-decorated zinc oxide nanoparticles which were then characterized via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Following characterization, these were incorporated in RMGIC (Gold label, Fuji II LC). Three major groups, experimental group A (EGA), experimental group B (EGB), and control group (CG), were outlined. EGA and EGB were divided into numbered subgroups based on the ascending concentrations of nanoparticles (5, 10, and 15%) of lignin-coated zinc oxide and zinc-oxide, respectively. CG served as a control and comprised cured RMGIC samples without any incorporation. Anticariogenic analysis was conducted on experimental RMGIC samples via disk-diffusion (n = 3) and direct contact test (n = 3) against Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175). Optical density values for days 1, 3, and 5 were recorded via a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. A shear bond strength test was performed using 35 premolars. The adhesive remnant index was used to estimate the site of bond failure. For the Vickers microhardness test (n = 3), 100 g of load at 10 s dwell time was set. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was performed over 28 days to determine the release of zinc from the samples. All tests were analyzed statistically. The anticariogenic potential of EGA and EGB was significantly greater (p ≤ 0.05) than that of the control. The shear bond strength test reported the highest value for EGA15 with all groups exhibiting failure at the bracket/RMGIC interface. The microhardness of EGA15 yielded the highest value (p ≤ 0.05). Release kinetics displayed a steady release with EGB15 exhibiting the highest value. The EGA and EGB samples displayed good anticariogenic potential, which was sustained for 28 days without any deleterious effect on the shear bond strength and microhardness.

    This study investigates the capacity of the nano-indentation method in the mechanical characterization of a heterogeneous dental restorative nanocomposite using experimental and computational approaches. In this respect, Filtek Z350 XT was selected as a nano-particle reinforced polymer nanocomposite with a specific range of the particle size (50 nm to 4 µm), within the range of indenter contact area of the nano-indentation experiment. A Sufficient number of nano-indentation tests were performed in various locations of the nanocomposite to extract the hardness and elastic modulus properties. A hybrid computational-experimental approach was developed to examine the extracted properties by linking the internal behaviour and the global response of the nanocomposite. In the computational part, several representative models of the nanocomposite were created in a finite element environment to simulate the mechanism of elastic-plastic deformation of the nanocomposite under Berkovich indenter. Dispersed values of hardness and elastic modulus were obtained through the experiment with 26.8 and 48.5 percent average errors, respectively, in comparison to the nanocomposite properties, respectively. A disordered shape was predicted for plastic deformation of the equilateral indentation mark, representing the interaction of the particles and matrix, which caused the experiment results reflect the local behaviour of the nanocomposite instead of the real material properties.

    Some restorative materials are susceptible to erosion but whether it also causes microleakage is still questionable. The aim of this study was to assess the microleakage of few restorative materials after immersion in acidic solution. Standardized ‘U’ shaped cavity of 4mm diameter and 2mm depth were prepared on buccal or lingual surface of 52 human premolar and molar teeth. The teeth were divided into 4 groups which contains 13 samples and 3 controls for each and were restored either with Filtek Z250 (Group 1), Fuji IX (Group 2), Fuji II LC (Group 3), or Silverfill amalgam (Group 4).
    All surfaces were painted with nail varnish leaving only 2mm of tooth structure surrounding the restoration before the study samples were immersed in acidic solution, lemon juice (pH 2.74) and control samples in deionised distilled water for 24 hours. Surface photos for erosion were taken before immersion in methylene blue for 7 days. After sectioning, the assessment of dye penetration was done using Leica Imaging System DMLM (Germany). Photos showed that Fuji IX demonstrated severe erosion but no obvious changes were seen on other materials. Methods: Flowable composite resins (Transbond TM Supreme LV, StarFlowTM and Tetric EvoFlow®) and non -flowable control resin (TransbondTM LR) were made into cylinders prior to bonding to hydoxyapatite discs. They were then mounted into jigs and tested in the InstronTM Universal Testing Machine in both shear and tensile modes. Results: The highest mean shear bond strength was seen with StarFlow TM (14.09 MPa), which was significantly higher than both TransbondTM LR (9.48 MPa) and TransbondTM Supreme LV (8.20 MPa). The mean shear bond strength of Tetric EvoFlow® (11.86 MPa) was also significantly higher than TransbondTM Supreme LV. The highest mean tensile bond strength was seen with Tetric EvoFlow® (2.14 MPa), which was significantly higher than TransbondTM LR (1.15 MPa) and TransbondTM Supreme LV (0.61 MPa) but not significantly different to StarFlowTM (1.47 MPa). For shear loading, StarFlowTM had the highest 50th percentile survival estimate at 15.10 MPa, followed by Tetric EvoFlow® (13.00 MPa) and TransbondTM Supreme LV (7.50 MPa). TransbondTM LR had a 50th percentile estimate at 9.00 MPa. For tensile loading, Tetric EvoFlow® had the highest 50th percentile survival estimate at 2.50 MPa, followed by StarFlowTM (1.30 MPa) and TransbondTM Supreme LV (0.50 MPa). TransbondTM LR had a 50th percentile estimate at 1.00 MPa. Conclusions: Mean shear bond strengths for all of the resins were significantly higher than the mean tensile bond strengths. StarFlowTM and Tetric EvoFlow® could potentially be suitable clinical alternatives to TransbondTM LR due to its low viscosity flow characteristics and adequate shear and tensile bond strengths.

    A survey to characterize seismic and ultrasonic properties of a granite weathering profile have been carried out at a roadcut slope exposure along Kuala Lumpur-Karak highway at kilometres 39.9. The terraced cut slope shows a complete weathering profile beginning from fresh grade I rock to grade VI residual soil. Together with in situ seismic measurement, rock samples have been collected for ultrasonic tests in laboratory. The range of velocities representing grades and indices of weathered rocks and soils are determined from the in situ seismic surveys. The range of ultrasonic velocities and elastic moduli are obtained from the laboratory measurements.
    Satu survei untuk mencirikan sifat seismos dan ultrasonik profil luluhawa granit telah dilakukan di singkapan potongan jalan, cerun utara lebuhraya Kuala Lumpur-Karak pada lokaliti 39.9 km. Potongan berteres ini mempamirkan satu profil luluhawa lengkap iaitu mulai batuan gred 1 yang segar hingga ke tanah baki bergred VI. Di samping pengukuran seismos secara in situ, sampel batuan juga diambil untuk dibuat pengukuran halaju ultrasonik di makmal. Julat halaju yang mewakili gred dan indeks luluhawa bagi tanah dan batuan diperolehi daripada survei seismos in situ. Julat halaju trasonik dan modulus kenyal diperolehi hasil pengukuran di makmal.

    Rawatan ortodontik boleh menjejaskan keseimbangan mikrobiota oral yang memainkan peranan utama dalam etiologi penyakit periodontium. Kajian klinikal prospektif ini bertujuan untuk menilai kesihatan periodontal dan profil mikrobiologi pesakit periodontal yang sihat (Kumpulan 1) dan yang telah stabil (Kumpulan 2) selama tiga bulan pertama semasa rawatan ortodontik. Aplian ortodontik atas dan bawah tetap dipasang. Kesihatan periodontium dinilai menggunakan skor plak (PS), pendarahan pada probing (BOP) dan kedalaman poket (PD). 29 tapak telah diambil untuk persampelan plak subgingival. Sampel plak diinokulasikan pada agar Trypticase Soya Darah (TSBA) dan agar Trypticase Soya Bacitracin Vancomycin (TSBV) untuk penilaian aerob, anaerob, bakteria berpigmen hitam (BPH) dan Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Semua ukuran diambil sebelum pendakap gigi dipasang (T0), 1 minggu (T1), 1 bulan (T2) dan 3 bulan selepas dipasang pendakap gigi (T3). Secara umumnya, kesihatan periodontium dalam kedua-dua kumpulan hampir sama. Selepas 1 minggu, bilangan aerob adalah lebih tinggi dalam Kumpulan 1 (88%) manakala anaerob adalah lebih tinggi dalam Kumpulan 2 (45%). A. actinomycetemcomitans lebih tinggi dalam Kumpulan 1 pada T0 dan T1 tetapi jauh lebih tinggi dalam Kumpulan 2 di T3. BPH adalah minimal pada setiap masa dengan tiada perbezaan signifikan. Oleh itu, semasa 3 bulan pertama rawatan ortodontik dijalankan, terdapat perubahan ketara dalam bilangan aerob-anaerob pada kedua-dua pesakit periodontal yang sihat dan stabil. Bakteria patogenik akan meningkat semasa rawatan awal ortodontik.

    Objective: To evaluate the effect of a new application method of bulk-fill flowable composite resin material on bond-strength, nanoleakage, and mechanical properties of dentine bonding agents.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sound extracted human molars were randomly divided into: manufacturer's instructions (MI), manual blend 2 mm (MB2), and manual blend 4 mm (MB4). Occlusal enamel was removed and flattened, dentin surfaces were bonded by Prime & Bond universal (Dentsply and Optibond FL, Kerr). For the MI group, adhesives were applied following the manufacturer's instructions then light-cured. For MB groups, SDR flow+ bulk-fill flowable composite resin was applied in 2- or 4-mm increment then manually rubbed by a micro brush for 15 s with uncured dentine bonding agents and the mixture was light-cured. Composite buildup was fabricated incrementally using Ceram.X One, Dentsply nanohybrid composite resin restorative material. After 24-h water storage, the teeth were sectioned to obtain beams of about 0.8 mm2 for 24-h and thermocycled micro-tensile bond strength at 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed. Degree of conversion was evaluated with micro-Raman spectroscopy. Contraction gaps at 24 h after polymerization were evaluated and atomic force microscopy (AFM) nano-indentation processes were undertaken for measuring the hardness across the interface. Depth of resin penetration was studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Bond strength data was expressed using two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test. Nanoindentation hardness was separately analyzed using one-way ANOVA.

    RESULTS: Factors "storage F = 6.3" and "application F = 30.11" significantly affected the bond strength to dentine. For Optibond FL, no significant difference in nanoleakage was found in MI/MB4 groups between baseline and aged specimens; significant difference in nanoleakage score was observed in MB2 groups. Confocal microscopy analysis showed MB2 Optibond FL and Prime & Bond universal specimens diffusing within the dentine. Contraction gap was significantly reduced in MB2 specimens in both adhesive systems. Degree of conversion (DC) of the MB2 specimens were numerically more compared to MS1 in both adhesive systems.

    CONCLUSION: Present study suggests that the new co-blend technique might have a positive effect on bond strengths of etch-and-rinse adhesives to dentine.

    Background: Composite resin (CR) currently is one of the most commonly used material in restoring noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) due to its strength and esthetics color but has microleakage problem. The aim of this study is to compare in vitro the microleakage depth between CR and porcelain in restoring NCCL.

    Materials and Methods: This an in vitro study was done by preparing cavities on the buccocervical surface of 62 extracted premolar teeth which randomly assigned to two groups (n = 31) where Group 1 was restored with nanocomposite and Group 2 was cemented with porcelain cervical inlays. They were then subjected to thermocycling before immersion in 2% methylene blue dye for 24 h. Dye penetration depths were measured using Leica imaging system For statistical analysis, independent t-test was used to analyze the results (P < 0.05).

    Results: Porcelain cervical inlay restorations demonstrated statistically lesser microleakage depth for the cervical margins (P = 0.018) when compared to CR. Deeper microleakage depth at the cervical compared to coronal margins of CR (P = 0.006) but no significant difference of both margins for porcelain cervical inlays (P = 0.600).

    Conclusion: Porcelain cervical inlays show lesser microleakage than CR which could be alternative treatment option in restoring NCCL with better marginal seal and esthetics.

    Linear polymers have been commonly used as dental composite. However the aim of this work is to use hyperbranched polymer in an attempt to produce dental composite. The reason is because the dendritic molecules have shown low viscosity at higher molecular weight compared to the linear counterparts. Therefore, this work attempts to substitute the linear polymer with as much of hyperbranched polymer in the dental composite that would pass the required ISO 4049:1998(E) "Dentistry - Resin-based filling material". Several formulations of dental composites were used, i.e. combinations of linear-linear and linear-hyperbranched polymers for comparison. Following this, physical and mechanical characterisation were conducted based on the ISO standards such as water sorption and water solubility. Other characterisation such as polymerisation shrinkage and Vickers hardness were also evaluated. It was found that different types of resins give different physical and mechanical properties. The maximum achievable hyperbranched polymer, which passes the required ISO standard, that can be incorporated in the linear polymer to form dental composite is 43% wt.
