    Chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (Chitosan/PVA) blended film was prepared by direct blend process and solution casting methods.
    In order to reduce the swelling ratio and enhance the chemical and mechanical stability, Chitosan/PVA film was crosslinked
    with glutaraldehyde in order to produce Chitosan-g-PVA. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model protein
    to incorporate into the Chitosan-g-PVA. The chemical structure and morphological characteristics of films were studied
    by FT-IR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical and physical properties of blended films such as tensile
    properties in the dry and wet states, water uptake and water contact angle measurement were characterized. Blending
    PVA and chitosan improved strength and flexibility of the films. Crosslinking with glutaraldehyde further improves the
    tensile strength and decrease the hydrophilicity of films. BSA immobilized on the Chitosan-g-PVA film was calculated as
    BSA encapsulation efficiency.

    Bacterial adhesion to host cells is the most important probiotic character. However, the adhesion of probiotic should not
    affect the viability of the host cells. In this study, Lactobacillus plantarum strain L8, Lactobacillus plantarum strain L20
    and Lactobacillus pentosus strain S1 were tested for their cytotoxic effects through MTT assay and their ability to adhere
    and colonize on HT-29 and CCD-18Co intestinal cells as detected microscopically using light microscopy and Scanning
    Electron Microscopy (SEM). No cytotoxicity effects were observed on both intestinal cells following 24 h treatment with
    all Lactobacillus strains. Additionally, all strains demonstrated strong adhesive activity where more than 100 bacteria
    adhered to both intestinal cells although differences in the adhesion scores observed among different strains. The adhesion
    as observed via SEM showed an autoagreggative pattern and adhered as clusters on the surface of both intestinal cells.
    In conclusion, all three Lactobacillus strains are non-cytotoxic to both cells with strong adhesion ability on intestinal
    cells and this study also proved that Malaysian fermented fish are good source of probiotic bacteria.

    The main objective of the study was to determine the factors associated with blood cholesterol level among staff in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The study was a cross-sectional. One-hundred staff between 23 and 59 years of age were recruited in this study using convenient sampling at USM Health Campus. A questionnaire which includes sociodemographic characteristics, medical history, and red meat intake was used in the study. Anthropometric and biochemical assessment were measured. Blood cholesterol level was divided into two categories which were known as healthy range (<5.2mmol/L) and slight risk/high risk range (≥5.2mmol/L). The gender distribution of respondents for this study comprised of 40 male and 60 female. The age group (18 to 39) years and (40 to 59) years had a total of 40.3% and 63.2% of slightly risk or high risk blood cholesterol respectively; with the significant association between age group and blood cholesterol level (χ²=4.916,p=0.027). Besides, normal BMI group had 66.7% of respondents achieved healthy blood cholesterol level whereas underweight, overweight and obese group had 39.7% achieved healthy blood cholesterol with the significant association between BMI and blood cholesterol level (χ²=7.112,p=0.008). Moreover, daily or weekly intake of red meat showed that 65.0% of total respondents had a healthier blood cholesterol level compared to 51.0% of monthly, rarely, or none red meat intake group which achieved healthy blood cholesterol level. The result also showed a significant association between red meat intake and blood cholesterol (χ²=5.229, p=0.022), which indicating less red meat consumption is linked to high level of blood cholesterol level. Therefore, further investigation and future studies are needed to gain a clearer understanding of the association between these variables and blood cholesterol level.

    In this work, the novel imprinted zeolite (IZ) was synthesized, and its properties and performance in terms of adsorption of p-Cresol, which represent the protein-bounded uremic toxins in aqueous phase under phosphate buffer saline, were studied and compared with the synthesized zeolite-Y (ZeoY-S) and commercial CBV 100 zeolite-Y (ZeoY-C). The ZeoY-S was synthesized from sodium aluminate, NaOH, H2O and SiO2 under aging for 24 h at room temperature and hydrothermal condition for 24 h at 100 °C, with an initial composition of 10SiO2:Al2O3:4Na2O:180H2O. The ZeoY-S has been modified by using the imprinting technology to produce the IZ via the use of p-Cresol as a template. The p-Cresol successfully imprinted on the zeolite-Y was proved through the multipoint Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and the performance of IZ that was compared to ZeoY-S and ZeoY-C. Based on the BET results, it proves that the pore size of IZ is in accordance with the target compound, which is p-Cresol at 0.79 nm. This modification was able to adsorb p-Cresol 2.5 and 3.5 times higher than ZeoY-S and ZeoY-C can, respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models, together with the pseudo-first and -second order and intra-particle diffusion kinetics models, were used to investigate the adsorption behavior of p-Cresol on the zeolites. The IZ has 4.30 times greater competitive molecules than ZeoY-S and the properties of IZ were not influenced by the content of other phenolic group uremic toxins as competitive molecules. It can be concluded that the micropores of zeolite as adsorbent can be modified using the imprinting technology in order to increase its sensitivity and selectivity towards p-Cresol.

    Subsea cable laying process is a difficult task for an engineer due to many
    uncertain situations which occur during the operation. It is very often that the cable being
    laid out is not perfectly fit on the route being planned, which results in the formation of
    slack. In order to control wastages during installation, the slack needs to be minimized
    and the movement of a ship/vessel needs to be synchronized with the cable being laid out.
    The current problem was addressed using a mathematical model by considering a number
    of defining parameters such as the external forces, the cable properties and geometry. Due
    to the complexity, the model is developed for a steady-state problem assuming velocity
    of the vessel is constant, seabed is flat and the effect of wind and wave is insignificant.
    Non-dimensional system is used to scale the engineering parameters and grouped them
    into only two main parameters which are the hydrodynamic drag of the fluid and the
    bending stiffness of the cable. There are two solutions generated in this article; numerical
    and asymptotic solutions. The result of these solutions suggests that the percentage of
    slack can be reduced by the increase of the prescribed cable tension, and also the increase
    in either the drag coefficient of the sea water or the bending stiffness of the cable, similarly
    will result in lower slack percentage

    — To report clinical features and management of toxic keratopathy
    induced by inadvertent intrastromal trypan blue injection (0.06%) during
    cataract surgery. We report two cases of toxic keratopathy induced by
    iatrogenic intrastromal trypan blue injection during cataract surgery. The
    two cases were performed by ophthalmology residents at our centre.
    Intraoperatively in both cases, trypan blue dye was inadvertently injected
    into the corneal stromal via side port wound. Surgery was abandoned due
    to development of corneal oedema. They were treated as toxic keratopathy
    due to the bluish discoloration of the cornea, generalized (limbal to limbal)
    panstromal edema and marked Descemet membrane folds. There were
    epithelial microbullae and mild circumcorneal injection. Both patients’ vision
    deteriorated with only minimal anterior chamber reaction and normal
    intraocular pressure. Intensive topical corticosteroid, prophylactic antibiotic,
    gutt hypertonic saline 5%, and cycloplegic agent eyedrops were given. The
    cornea edema and staining in both patients resolved completely by 6
    weeks. They underwent uncomplicated elective phacoemulsification 3
    months after the incident. Intraoperative Iatrogenic inadvertent intrastromal
    vision blue injection during cataract surgery can cause toxic keratopathy. A
    decision to abandon the surgery and prompt management to reverse the
    complication can produce excellent outcome.

    Background: The rise in substance-use-related problems among Malaysian adolescents called for a study to
    assess the efficacy of an anti-drug educational program to improve the knowledge, attitude and perception
    (KAP) of Malaysian students regarding substance use.
    Methods: This study involved 573 students from four Malaysian Chinese schools in Malacca. Each student
    filled out a Likert-scale mandarin translated questionnaire (KAP-C) on substance use ( Pre-test). Following an
    educational program on substance use, the KAP-C questionnaire was given again to the students, immediately
    following the program (PT 1), and after a month (PT 2) and two months (PT3) of the programme.

    INTRODUCTION: Thyroid antibodies are closely related to autoimmune thyroid disorders. To date, there
    are no data on the prevalence of these antibodies among the Malaysian population. This study aimed to
    determine the prevalence of thyroid antibodies; and the factors associated with thyroid antibodies in the
    Malaysian adult population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in 5 preassigned regions in Peninsular Malaysia. Participants’ sociodemographic profile and medical history were
    recorded. Physical examinations were done looking for abnormalities of the thyroid gland and signs of thyroid
    dysfunctions. Fifteen mils of blood were withdrawn and analysed for thyroid function, anti-thyroperoxidase
    (anti-TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin (anti-TG) antibodies at a central laboratory. RESULTS: Among the total of
    2190 respondents, the overall prevalence of positive anti-TPO and anti-TG antibodies were 12.2% and 12.1%,
    respectively; mainly found in urban and coastal areas. Only 7% to 9% of those with positive anti-TPO or antiTG antibodies had either hypo- or hyperthyroidism. The predictors for positive anti-TPO antibody were
    female [adjusted OR 1.7 (95%CI: 1.2–2.4); p=0.001], Indian [adjusted OR 1.9 (95%CI: 1.1–3.1); p=0.020], and

    This study aims to investigate the bending effects on the flexible wearable antenna by using copper nanowires and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This project focuses on the bending effect on the proposed wearable antenna in the presence of skin tissue and at free space. The radiation characteristics were simulated and analyzed when the antenna was under flat and bent conditions. The performance result of return loss and radiation pattern (Efield and H-field) of proposed wearable antenna was analyzed. The material for the proposed antenna is designed to be flexible and wearable for the application of body-centric wireless communication (BCWCs) at the frequency of 2.45 GHz with the approval specifications of industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band. Radiator for the proposed wearable antenna is fabricated using copper nanowire, and the antenna substrate is by using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The performance result of the proposed wearable antenna was simulated by using CST microwave studio. From the simulated result for different bending angles, a conclusion was drawn that bending of structure can improve the impedance matching and return loss during the bent condition. However, the resonant frequency tends to shift as the antenna is bent up to 50°. At the critical angle of 70°, the frequency is shifted to a lower frequency.

    Disability is termed as both evolving concept and manifestation of interaction between persons with disabilities (PWDs) and physical and environmental barriers that holds them back from contributing actively in a society. People who fall in this category will find themselves trapped in a such vulnerable condition as they may not be able to cope with their daily problems without high surveillance from their guardian. Development of a mobile apps and web GIS-based healthcare system in Ampang is proposed in this study as this application has a bright potential to assist PWDs in terms of accessibilities to reach healthcare centres. The main objectives of this paper are i) to study the needs assessment on the proposed system, ii) to develop a mobile and web GIS-based healthcare information system and iii) to evaluate the performance of the proposed system. Selected respondents agreed on the development of the prototype system, namely the mobile apps and web system. The system was created with main menus such as doctor home visits, ambulance and medication delivery. Medical support team can also perform analyses in the system for PWD needs such as shortest path analysis, buffering and view of the main menus.

    We studied the diversity of Aedes breeding sites in various urban, suburban, and rural areas over time between February 2009 and February 2010 in the dengue endemic areas of Penang Island, Malaysia. We categorized the breeding sites and efficiency, and identified the key breeding containers. Among the 3 areas, the rural areas produced the highest container index (55), followed by suburban (42) and urban (32) areas. The numbers of key premises and containers were significantly higher (P < 0.000) in rural areas. The class 1 containers were identified as the key containers with higher productivity and efficiency, although class 2 and class 4 are the highest in numbers. Aedes aegypti immatures were found mostly in drums, water reservoirs, and polyethylene sheets, while mixed breeding was more common in buckets and empty paint cans in urban and suburban areas. Aedes albopictus was found mainly in miscellaneous containers such as drums, empty paint cans, and covers in all areas. The main potential containers indoors were drums, water reservoirs, and empty paint cans, and containers outdoors included empty paint cans, drums, and polyethylene sheets.

    Introduction: There is an emergent increase of ultra-processed food consumption in developing countries including Malaysia which carries a likelihood towards the increase of obesity. However, few studies have been done in relating between ultra-processed consumption and obesity, especially in Malaysia. Therefore, this study aims to determine the consumption of ultra-processed foods and its relationship with BMI and body fat percentage among university committee in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed among 167 individuals aged 18 to 59 years old in Kuala Nerus.     Gliosarcoma is a rare primary malignant tumour of the central nervous system. A 28-year-old radiographer without a history of neurological disorder, malignancy or trauma presented with unprovoked seizures. He was symptom-free for 3 years but developed relapsed. Computed tomography of the brain was consistent with anaplastic convexity meningioma which was identical via intraoperative findings. However, the final histology revealed gliosarcoma of the brain. He recovered well postoperatively without any neurological deficit and had completed adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy. He was asymptomatic during follow up with no tumour recurrence. Gliosarcoma with predominant sarcomatous component mimicking a meningioma has prolonged survival as compared to a case with predominant glioblastoma component. Hence, the discordance between clinical, radiological, intraoperative and histopathological findings is a challenge in establishing a diagnosis of gliosarcoma.

    In this paper, the combined influences of biotic interactions, environmental components and harvesting strategy on the spread of Hantavirus are investigated. By employing a multi-species model consisting of (susceptible and infected) rodents and alien species, we show that interspecific competition from alien species has an effect in reducing the spread of infection, and this species could be employed as a potential biocontrol agent. Our analysis using numerical continuation and simulation also reveals the conditions under which Hantavirus infection occurs and disappears as the environmental conditions and the intensity of harvesting change. Without harvesting, infection emerges when environments are conducive. Inclusion of moderate harvesting in favourable environments can lead to disappearance of infection among rodent species. However, as the intensity of harvesting increases, this situation can cause extinction of all rodents species and consequently, jeopardise biodiversity. Overall, our results demonstrate how the interplay of different factors can combine to determine the spread of infectious diseases.

    Introduction: Evaluation of mental health literacy is important in assisting the development of intervention and policies toward preventing mental health problems. This study aims to explore mental health literacy and its socio- demographic predictors in a group of housewives living in low-cost apartments in Selangor, Malaysia. Methods: A Malay version of the self-administered Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) was used in this cross-sectional study. Age, ethnicity, religion, educational level and family income were tested using one-way ANOVA and independent t-test. Result: A total of 103 eligible respondents participated in the study. Most respondents were from the age group of 30 and above, from the Malay ethnic group, Muslims, had formal education up to secondary level with a monthly family income below RM4000 (USD980). The overall mean (sd) mental health literacy score was low 106.65 (11.21) and was significantly associated with ethnicity, religion, educational level and family income (p>0.05). Conclusion: Mental health literacy scores were low and showed variations within sociodemographic groups.

    The present paper deals with the novel approach for clustering using the image feature of stabilization diagram for automated operational modal analysis in parametric model which is stochastic subspace identification (SSI)-COV. The evolution of automated operational modal analysis (OMA) is not an easy task, since traditional methods of modal analysis require a large amount of intervention by an expert user. The stabilization diagram and clustering tools are introduced to autonomously distinguish physical poles from noise (spurious) poles which can neglect any user interaction. However, the existing clustering algorithms require at least one user-defined parameter, the maximum within-cluster distance between representations of the same physical mode from different system orders and the supplementary adaptive approaches have to be employed to optimize the selection of cluster validation criteria which will lead to high demanding computational effort. The developed image clustering process is based on the input image of the stabilization diagram that has been generated and displayed separately into a certain interval frequency. and standardized image features in MATLAB was applied to extract the image features of each generated image of stabilisation diagrams. Then, the generated image feature extraction of stabilization diagrams was used to plot image clustering diagram and fixed defined threshold was set for the physical modes classification. The application of image clustering has proven to provide a reliable output results which can effectively identify physical modes in stabilization diagrams using image feature extraction even for closely spaced modes without the need of any calibration or user-defined parameter at start up and any supplementary adaptive approach for cluster validation criteria.

    Gallic acid (GA) is a phenolic compound found in almost all plants and has been reported to possess powerful health benefits such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic properties. However, GA suffers a short half-life when administered in vivo. Recent studies have employed graphene oxide (GO), a biocompatible and cost-effective graphene derivative, as a nanocarrier for GA. However, the toxicity effect of this formulated nano-compound has not been fully studied. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the toxicity and teratogenicity of GA loaded GO (GAGO) against zebrafish embryogenesis to further advance the development of GA as a therapeutic agent. GAGO was exposed to zebrafish embryos (n ≥ 10; 24hr post fertilization (hpf)) at different concentrations (0-500 μg/ml). The development of zebrafish was observed and recorded twice daily for four days. The toxicity of pure GO and GA was also observed at similar concentrations. Distilled water was used as control throughout the experiment.     Leptin, a 16 kDa protein and a product of the ob/ob gene, has a tertiary structure similar to that
    of a cytokine. It is primarily secreted by white adipose tissue and its levels in the blood correlate
    positively with percentage body fat. Leptin was first identified in 1994 as a major factor that
    regulated food intake and energy balance. Leptin in the circulation exists either as a free
    monomeric hormone or bound to its soluble receptor. Its serum levels usually range from 0.5 to
    37.7 ng/ml in males and 2.0 to 45.2 ng/ml in females. The half-life of leptin is between 20 - 30
    minutes and it is eliminated mainly by the kidneys. However, research over the last 25 years
    has revealed numerous other physiological roles for leptin, including roles in inflammation,
    immune function, neuro-endocrine function, bone metabolism, blood pressure regulation and
    sexual maturation. Most of these roles have been identified from studies on leptin deficient
    rodents. Apart from energy balance and sexual maturation, where its role is direct and obvious,
    its actions on the rest of the other systems are permissive. Actions of leptin are both centrally
    and peripherally mediated involving receptors that are widely distributed in the body. Six leptin
    receptor isoforms, belonging to the class 1 cytokine receptor family, have been identified.
    These receptors are products of the OBR gene. The cellular actions of leptin are mediated
    through any one of five different signalling pathways that include the JAK-STAT, PI3K, MAPK,
    AMPK, and the mTOR signalling pathways.

    Introduction: The distribution of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis
    among Malaysian healthy adults and their capability to produce enzyme hyaluronidase are less
    reported. Hyaluronidase degrade hyaluronic acid in animal connective tissue and facilitate
    bacterial spreading in host body. This study aims to identify the distribution of both
    Staphylococci species in healthy subject, the hyaluronidase producer among the isolates and
    the association of the latter with site of isolation (palm skin and anterior nares) and gender of
    the host. Methods: A total of 108 swab samples were collected from anterior nares and palm
    of 54 healthy subjects. The bacteria were identified through microscopic and biochemical tests,
    before screened for hyaluronidase production using hyaluronic acid diffusion rapid plate
    method. Results: Total of 139 bacterial isolates were identified; 68 isolates are S. aureus, 63
    S. epidermidis and 8 other bacterial species. Staphylococcus aureus was highly isolated from
    palm (57%) than anterior nares (47%). On the contrary for S. epidermidis was highly isolated
    from anterior nares (53%) than from palm skin (43%). Equal proportion was found for both
    species in male and female subject. A total of 77 (59%) isolates produced hyaluronidase; 55%
    are S. aureus and 45% are S. epidermidis. Hyaluronidase-producer isolates are equally found
    between anterior nares (56%) and palm skin (61%) or male (57%) and female subject (60%)
    regardless of Staphylococcal species. No significant value was recorded for any analysis.
    Conclusion: Capability of commensal S. aureus and S. epidermidis isolated from healthy
    subject to produce hyaluronidase may indicate their potential as opportunistic pathogen
    whenever the opportunity arises in any way.

    Mental illness is expected to become the second biggest health problem affecting Malaysians by 2020. Doctors and medical students are more prone to mental illness compared to the general population. However, they are often reluctant to and resist seeking help because of stigma and a (strong) sense of shame. This can lead to detrimental consequences for themselves and their patients. That said, a doctor with a mental illness receiving appropriate treatment and who is in a stable condition may still be permitted to practise provided patient safety is not compromised. Determining this is a key responsibility of a healthcare regulator like the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). Using some prominent cases to illustrate this point, this article reviews the MMC guideline on ‘Managing Impaired Registered Medical Practitioners’. In the absence of similar local guidelines for medical students, we also allude to the UK General Medical Council’s guideline on ‘Supporting Medical Students with Mental Health Conditions’. The article recommends that doctors and medical students with mental illness should seek help; outlines a number of factors to consider in deciding whether a doctor should continue practising; and explores alternative career paths in instances where they should not. The article concludes that appropriate support goes a long way for doctors and medical students who grapple with mental health issues in that there is hope and a way through a seemingly devastating situation.
