Honey is a sweet substance that can be obtain from flower nectar and secretes through transformations process by honey bees. The aim of this study was to compare the antioxidant and anti-cholinesterase activities of 4 wild honey (wild honey produced by different species of bees: Apis cerana, Apis andreniformis, Apis koschevnikovi and Apis nuluensis) collected from the secondary forest and 6 commercial (young and old Mangrove, young and old Upper mountain, Tropical, Potiukan) honey of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Antioxidant activities were determined using FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power), DPPH free radical scavenging and ABTS decolourization assays. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition effect was determined by enzyme inhibition method. The results of this study showed that wild honey produced by A.cerana collected from the Acacia tree extracted using 80% methanol displayed the highest DPPH free radical scavenging activity and ABTS decolorization assays. Whereas wild honey produced by A.nuluensis collected from the Chestnut tree extracted using 80% methanol displayed the highest FRAP activity. The wild honey produced by A. nuluensis also displayed the highest acetylcholinesterase properties as the antioxidant compounds contributed to the inhibitory properties of the enzyme. Manuka honey (produced from tea tree) found to be higher in antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase properties as compared to all other samples. The same trend of bioactivity was also observed in absolute methanol extracts. Strong positive correlation was found between antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase activity. Therefore, honey has the potential as natural antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibition sources with promising potential benefits to human’s health.

In typical Lamb wave simulation practices, effects of plate edge reflections are often not considered in order to simplify the wave signal interpretations. Methods that are based on infinite plates such as the semi-analytical finite element method is effective in simulating Lamb waves as it excludes the effect of plate edges. However, the inclusion of plate edges in a finite plate could render this method inapplicable, especially for transient response simulations. Here, by applying the ratio of Lamb mode reflections at plate edges, and representing the reflection at plate edges using infinite plate solutions, the semi-analytical finite element method can be applied for transient response simulation, even when the plate is no longer infinite.

OBJECTIVE: 1.To evaluates and recognizes findings in chest radiograph in patients with laboratory-confirmed S-OIV (H1N1) infection treated at UKMMC. 2. To evaluate whether the findings on initial chest radiographs of influenza A (H1N1) patients can help to predict the prognosis.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: Total of 109 adult patients presenting to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) with flu-like symptoms who were positive for influenza A and these patients had underwent chest radiographs (CXR). The initial CXRs were evaluated for the pattern (consolidation, ground-glass, and reticulation), distribution, and extend of abnormality. The disease is classifies by the clinical severity (mild, moderate or severe illness) and adverse outcome (ventilated, death or recovered well).

RESULTS: The initial CXRs were normal in 56% of cases. The predominant radiographic finding was consolidation, most commonly involving the middle and lower zones (35% of cases). There is no significant association between initial CXR findings with the patient clinical outcome either fully recovered or death/ ventilated.

CONCLUSION: Normal chest radiographs is the most common radiographic finding in S-OIV (H1N1) infection and the most common abnormal lung finding is consolidation. Initial chest radiographs did not determine the patient clinical outcome and a normal initial radiograph could not exclude adverse outcome.

Ten out of 237 patients who underwent renal transplantation between 1975 and October 1986 developed tuberculosis. Most patients presented with vague symptoms, and typical symptoms commonly associated with tuberculosis were not common. Six had positive urine cultures. One patient had positive sputum and urine cultures and one had positive sputum and cerebrospinal fluid cultures for tuberculosis. In this last patient cryptococcus was also cultured from the sputum and CSF. Nine of the 10 patients responded well to antituberculosis therapy and was cured of the infection. The patient with associated cryptococcal infection died 2 months after presentation. Side effects of antituberculous therapy was minimal and easily resolved on stopping the offending drug.

Cigarette smoking is so widespread that even medical workers are not exempted. A cross sectional survey was conducted among health care workers of the Institute of Respiratory Medicine, Hospital Kuala Lumpur to determine the prevalence of smoking and to assess readiness among the current smokers to quit. A total of 165 workers from all categories was surveyed using a pre-tested self-administered questionnaire, The survey began in Mac 2002 and ended in April 2002, The survey showed that 24.8% of the workers surveyed were current smokers. Only male workers were found to smoke and the prevalence among them was 60.3%. Majority were moderate smokers, smoking between 10 to 20 cigarettes a day and were mainly lower category of workers, Median age of starting to smoke was 17.6 years, There were 20 smokesr ( 52.6%) who were ready to quit. This study found the prevalence of smoking among male health care workers to be higher than males in the general population. The low level of education of these workers seemed to influence smoking status.

The article examines the thermal responses of one-ply triaxially woven fabric composites (TWFCs). A temperature change experimental observation is first conducted on plate and slender strip specimens of TWFCs. Computational simulations are then performed with analytical and simple, geometrically-similar model configurations to capture thereby offering insights into the anisotropic thermal effects of the experimentally observed deformation. It is revealed that the leading cause of the observed thermal responses is the advancement of a locally formed twisting deformation mode. Therefore, a newly defined thermal deformation description called the coefficient of thermal twist is then characterized for TWFCs for different loading cases.

Partial ablation of the uropygial gland is being used in the poultry industry as a new way to enhance body performance of chickens. However, limited data are available estimating the efficacy of partial uropygialectomy (PU) to improve body organ activity. The present study evaluated the effect of partial ablation of the uropygial gland on the serum growth hormone concentration level and digestive system histology of 120 Akar Putra chickens in 5 trials with 3 replicates per trial. The experimental treatments consisted of a control treatment T1; partial ablation of the uropygial gland was applied in the T2, T3, T4, and T5 treatments at 3, 4, 5, and 6 wk of age, respectively. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. All treatment groups were provided the same diet. Venous blood samples were collected on wk 7, 10, and 12 to assay the levels of growth hormone concentration. On the last d of the experiment, 4 birds per replicate were randomly isolated and euthanized to perform the necropsy. Digestive system organs' cross sections were measured by a computerized image analyzer after being stained with haematoxylin and eosin. In comparison with the control group, surgical removal of the uropygial gland, especially at wk 3, had a greater (P<0.01) effect on the total duodenum, jejunum, and ilium wall thickness. In addition, effects (P<0.05) were observed on the wall thickness of males' cecum and colon. Moreover, the wall layers of the esophagus, proventriculus, gizzard, and rectum were not affected by the treatment. However, removing the uropygial gland showed significant impact (P<0.05) in males' growth hormone concentration level at wk 7 and (P<0.01) effects at wk 12 in both sexes. This study provides a novel and economic alternative to enhance the body performance of poultry in general and Akar Putra chickens particularly.

The study of driver posture and comfort in driver workspace is important in vehicle package design especially in two
different type of vehicle, sedan and Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV). Due to different seat position in the driver
workspace, investigation of driver accommodation in relations to driver anthropometry is essential to ensure its
meet the ergonomic quality. Therefore, this research is to investigate the preferred driving posture of Malaysian
driver in both sedan and MPV type of car. Sixty two subjects (32 males and 30 females) aged between 17–60 years old
were selected to simulate the comfortable driving posture using mock-ups of sedan car and MPV. Measurements
based on SAE J1100 vehicle package design geometry were carried out for each subject. Result shows slight
differences in the range of posture angle between the two types of vehicles, the posture joint angle in MPV is
slightly smaller as compared to those of sedan car. The range postural angles for Malaysian driver population also is
slightly smaller compare to Caucasian people especially on lower body portion such as knee angle, hip angle and
ankle angle. These angles are due to the body stature and body segment length in which the population of Malaysia
have shorter thighs and legs than those in Europe and America.

In the human genome, point variations are most common (Nachman & Crowell, 2000) and well understood. These variations, when existing in more than 1% of the population, is referred to as
Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) and can fall in the coding region of a gene, non coding region or intergenic regions.

Open tracheal injury is rare but can lead to disastrous consequences such as massive bleeding, airway obstruction or failure and aspiration of blood. We present a case of open tracheal injury of a man who tried to attempt suicide using a knife. In this case, the initial management was securing the airway by attempting orotracheal intubation. However, it was unsuccessful when the tube came out from the laceration wound. Intubation was then re-attempted through the distal cut-end of the trachea in the face of airway failure. A quick initial assessment and anticipation of a failed airway should always be the top priority in any emergency physician managing these cases. Direct intubation through the laceration wound might be the only option when all else fail and your patient is crashing.

The effect of testosteron on Ascaris suum worm load and larval growth were studied. The results revealed that the effect of testosterone on A. suum infection was dose dependent. Administration of 0.5 mg testosterone propionate (TP) for 18 days significantly increased the mice susceptibility to A. suum infection (66.2 ± 11.15 larvae) (mean ± S.E.) when compared to the control. Higher dosage of testosterone (1.0, 2.5 or 5.0 mg TP) did not show any significant effect. The present experiment also showed that administration of testosterone (0.5 mg TP) for 7 days increased the host susceptibility (86.1 ± 5.86 larvae) to A. suum infection compared to the control (14.6 ± 1.71 larvae) (P < 0.001). Similar results were found when the hormone was administered for 14 and 28 days. On the contrary, when gonadectomised mice were given 0.5 mg TP, the level of susceptibility increased (P < 0.001). It is believed that testosterone indirectly influence the parasitic infection through its effect on the lymphoid organs.

Thymoquinone (TQ) is the main pharmacologically active compound found in the seeds oil of Nigella
Sativa. Various studies had been investigated on the therapeutic effects of TQ against several diseases such as
anticancer research, antibacterial, and so on. As a result, a considerable amount of information has been
generated from these researches thus providing a better understanding of the promising effects of this
compound. However, research studies on the potential role of this compound on opioid addiction studies are
still lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the potential role of TQ as a non-opioid
substitution therapy in opioid addiction and the chances of this compound to be explored further with special
    attention to opioid substitution therapy.

For centuries, morphology-based fish identification has been applied without molecular evaluation. Many studies showed that specimens with a similar morphology are frequently found to be quite genetically distinct. One of the fish species that still remains taxonomically problematic is a commercial snapper species, Lutjanus johnii. Because of morphological ambiguities among local fish taxonomists in Malaysia, we examined the ability of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene to genetically examine the taxonomic status of L. johnii. A 626-base pair COI region was successfully amplified and aligned with conspecific sequences that were retrieved from GenBank. The phylogenetic tree obtained showed two major clusters; the first cluster consists of L. johnii from Straits of Malacca, Thailand, Australia, and China while the second cluster comprises L. johnii from China and India. The latter group showed sequence divergence greater than 3.5%. After observing this, we suspected that there might be a cryptic species between the South China Sea and Indian Ocean. This is the first molecular report concerning the commercial species of snapper, L. johnii, in Malaysia, which had only gained provisional recognition from morphological examination.
