    This paper aims to study the spatial and temporal patterns of selected agricultural runoff, specifically in terms of glyphosate, nitrate, and ammonia in bottom water, as well as their possible sources, within an active cockle farming area in Bagan Pasir, Perak, Malaysia. Samples were taken along the cockle farming area from March to November 2019. Glyphosate was analyzed using HPLC with both extraction and derivatization methods using 9-fluorenyl-methyl chloroformate (FMOC-Cl), while nitrate and ammonia levels were determined using the standard Hach method. Generally, glyphosate, nitrate, and ammonia were present within the study site with the average concentration of 37.44 ± 12.27 μg/l, 1.65 ± 0.52 mg/l, and 0.37 ± 0.19 mg/l, respectively. The results suggest that glyphosate and nitrate might be derived from an inland source, while a uniform and low level of ammonia suggested might originate from lithogenic origins. Continuous monitoring remains encouraged.

    Basa catfish is a good source for fish oil extraction, which was believed to have good thermo-oxidative stability because of its similar fatty acid composition to that of palm olein (PO). The thermo-oxidative stability of PO, basa catfish oil (FO), and palm olein-basa fish oil blend (PO-FO; ratio 1:1) was evaluated after 75 frying cycles. No significant difference was observed in p-anisidine value, TOTOX value, conjugated trienes, monomeric oxidized triacylglycerols, and free fatty acids concentration after frying. Moreover, compared to PO, FO exhibited lighter color, lower acid value, conjugated dienes, polymerized triacylglycerol, and total polar content. The PO-FO blend also demonstrated a more favorable frying stability compared to the other two frying systems. These findings indicated that FO could be proposed as a promising alternative to common PO, and its blending with other vegetable oils at an appropriate ratio might improve the overall oil frying quality for future industrial applications.

    Information on the diversity and distribution of harmful microalgae in the Gulf of Thailand is very limited and mainly based on microscopic observations. Here, we collected 44 water samples from the Gulf of Thailand and its adjacent water (Perhentian Island, Malaysia) for comparison in 2018. DNA metabarcoding was performed targeting the partial large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (LSU rDNA D1-D3) and the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2). A total of 50 dinoflagellate genera (made up of 72 species) were identified based on the LSU rDNA dataset, while the results of ITS1 and ITS2 datasets revealed 33 and 32 dinoflagellate genera comprising 69 and 64 species, respectively. Five potentially toxic Pseudo-nitzschia (Bacillariophyceae) species were detected, with four as newly recorded species in the water (Pseudo-nitzschia americana/brasilliana, Pseudo-nitzschia simulans/delicatissima, P. galaxiae and P. multistriata). The highest relative abundances of P. galaxiae and P. multistriata were found in Trat Bay and Chumphon (accounting for 0.20% and 0.06% of total ASVs abundance, respectively). Three paralytic shellfish toxin producing dinoflagellate species were detected: Alexandrium tamiyavanichii, Alexandrium fragae, and Gymnodinium catenatum. The highest abundance of A. tamiyavanichii was found in the surface sample of Chumphon (CHO7 station), accounting for 1.95% of total ASVs abundance. Two azaspiracid producing dinoflagellate species, Azadinium poporum ribotype B, Azadinium spinosum ribotype A, and a pinnatoxin producing dinoflagellate species Vulcanodinium rugosum, with two ribotypes B and C, were revealed from the datasets although with very low abundances. Six fish killing dinoflagellate species, including Margalefidinium polykrikoides group IV, Margalefidinium fulvescens, Karenia mikimotoi, Karenia selliformis ribotype B, Karlodinium australe, and Karlodinium digitatum were detected and all representing new records in this area. The findings of numerous harmful microalgal species in the Gulf of Thailand highlight the potential risk of human intoxication and fish killing events.

    Currently, smart farming is considered an effective solution to enhance the productivity of farms; thereby, it has recently received broad interest from service providers to offer a wide range of applications, from pest identification to asset monitoring. Although the emergence of digital technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), has led to significant advances in the smart farming industry, farming operations still need more efficient solutions. On the other hand, the utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, is growing rapidly across many civil application domains. This paper aims to develop a farm monitoring system that incorporates UAV, LPWAN, and IoT technologies to transform the current farm management approach and aid farmers in obtaining actionable data from their farm operations. In this regard, an IoT-based water quality monitoring system was developed because water is an essential aspect in livestock development. Then, based on the Long-Range Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN®) technology, a multi-channel LoRaWAN® gateway was developed and integrated into a vertical takeoff and landing drone to convey collected data from the sensors to the cloud for further analysis. In addition, to develop LoRaWAN®-based aerial communication, a series of measurements and simulations were performed under different configurations and scenarios. Finally, to enhance the efficiency of aerial-based data collection, the UAV path planning was optimized. Measurement results showed that the maximum achievable LoRa coverage when operating on-air via the drone is about 10 km, and the Longley-Rice irregular terrain model provides the most suitable path loss model for the scenario of large-scale farms, and a multi-channel gateway with a spreading factor of 12 provides the most reliable communication link at a high drone speed (up to 95 km/h). Simulation results showed that the developed system can overcome the coverage limitation of LoRaWAN® and it can establish a reliable communication link over large-scale wireless sensor networks. In addition, it was shown that by optimizing flight paths, aerial data collection could be performed in a much shorter time than industrial mission planning (up to four times in our case).

    Macrophytes have been widely used as agents in wastewater treatment. The involvement of plants in wastewater treatment cannot be separated from wetland utilization. As one of the green technologies in wastewater treatment plants, wetland exhibits a great performance, especially in removing nutrients from wastewater before the final discharge. It involves the use of plants and consequently produces plant biomasses as treatment byproducts. The produced plant biomasses can be utilized or converted into several valuable compounds, but related information is still limited and scattered. This review summarizes wastewater's nutrient content (macro and micronutrient) that can support plant growth and the performance of constructed wetland (CW) in performing nutrient uptake by using macrophytes as treatment agents. This paper further discusses the potential of the utilization of the produced plant biomasses as bioenergy production materials, including bioethanol, biohydrogen, biogas, and biodiesel. This paper also highlights the conversion of plant biomasses into animal feed, biochar, adsorbent, and fertilizer, which may support clean production and circular economy efforts. The presented review aims to emphasize and explore the utilization of plant biomasses and their conversion into valuable products, which may solve problems related to plant biomass handling during the adoption of CW in wastewater treatment plants.

    Misleading identification and subsequent publications on biological, molecular, and aquaculture data of mangrove mud crab (genus Scylla de Hann 1833) is a major concern in many countries. In this study, multiple molecular markers were used for genetic identification of all four known mud crab species under genus Scylla collected from India, Philippines, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia. Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS-1), Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and PCR-based species-specific markers were used to resolve taxonomic ambiguity. PCR-RFLP techniques using NlaIV and BsaJI restriction endonucleases were efficient to differentiate four different mud crab species under genus Scylla with specific fragment profile. The results also justified the use of ITS-1 and PCR-based species-specific markers to identify mud crab species available in many countries quite rapidly and effectively. Several new molecular markers generated during the study are reported here to resolve the taxonomic ambiguity of Scylla species and the results reconfirmed that India is only having two commonly available mud crab species which was reported by the authors earlier.

    Coral reef research has predominantly focused on the effect of temperature on the breakdown of coral-dinoflagellate symbioses. However, less is known about how increasing temperature affects the establishment of new coral-dinoflagellate associations. Inter-partner specificity and environment-dependent colonization are two constraints proposed to limit the acquisition of more heat tolerant symbionts. Here, we investigated the symbiotic dynamics of various photosymbionts in different host genotypes under "optimal" and elevated temperature conditions. To do this, we inoculated symbiont-free polyps of the sea anemone Exaiptasia pallida originating from Hawaii (H2), North Carolina (CC7), and the Red Sea (RS) with the same mixture of native symbiont strains (Breviolum minutum, Symbiodinium linucheae, S. microadriaticum, and a Breviolum type from the Red Sea) at 25 and 32 °C, and assessed their ITS2 composition, colonization rates, and PSII photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm). Symbiont communities across thermal conditions differed significantly for all hosts, suggesting that temperature rather than partner specificity had a stronger effect on symbiosis establishment. Overall, we detected higher abundances of more heat resistant Symbiodiniaceae types in the 32 °C treatments. Our data further showed that PSII photophysiology under elevated temperature improved with thermal pre-exposure (i.e., higher Fv/Fm), yet, this effect depended on host genotype and was influenced by active feeding as photochemical efficiency dropped in response to food deprivation. These findings highlight the role of temperature and partner fidelity in the establishment and performance of symbiosis and demonstrate the importance of heterotrophy for symbiotic cnidarians to endure and recover from stress.

    Oomycetes are fungal-like eukaryotes and many of them are pathogens that threaten natural ecosystems and cause huge financial losses for the aqua- and agriculture industry. Amongst them, Aphanomyces invadans causes Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) in fish which can be responsible for up to 100% mortality in aquaculture. As other eukaryotic pathogens, in order to establish and promote an infection, A. invadans secretes proteins, which are predicted to overcome host defence mechanisms and interfere with other processes inside the host. We investigated the role of Lhs1 which is part of an ER-resident complex that generally promotes the translocation of proteins from the cytoplasm into the ER for further processing and secretion. Interestingly, proteomic studies reveal that only a subset of virulence factors are affected by the silencing of AiLhs1 in A. invadans indicating various secretion pathways for different proteins. Importantly, changes in the secretome upon silencing of AiLhs1 significantly reduces the virulence of A. invadans in the infection model Galleriamellonella. Furthermore, we show that AiLhs1 is important for the production of zoospores and their cluster formation. This renders proteins required for protein ER translocation as interesting targets for the potential development of alternative disease control strategies in agri- and aquaculture.

    Tilapia are among the most important farmed fish species worldwide, and are fundamental for the food security of many developing countries. Several genetically improved Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) strains exist, such as the iconic Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT), and breeding programs typically follow classical pedigree-based selection. The use of genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data can enable an understanding of the genetic architecture of economically important traits and the acceleration of genetic gain via genomic selection. Due to the global importance and diversity of Nile tilapia, an open access SNP array would be beneficial for aquaculture research and production. In the current study, a ∼65K SNP array was designed based on SNPs discovered from whole-genome sequence data from a GIFT breeding nucleus population and the overlap with SNP datasets from wild fish populations and several other farmed Nile tilapia strains. The SNP array was applied to clearly distinguish between different tilapia populations across Asia and Africa, with at least ∼30,000 SNPs segregating in each of the diverse population samples tested. It is anticipated that this SNP array will be an enabling tool for population genetics and tilapia breeding research, facilitating consistency and comparison of results across studies.

    We explore the local dynamics, flip bifurcation, chaos control and existence of periodic point of the predator-prey model with Allee effect on the prey population in the interior of $\mathbb{R}^*{_+^2}$. Nu-merical simulations not only exhibit our results with the theoretical analysis but also show the complex dynamical behaviors, such as the period-2, 8, 11, 17, 20 and 22 orbits. Further, maximum Lyapunov exponents as well as fractal dimensions are also computed numerically to show the presence of chaotic behavior in the model under consideration.

    Kejatuhan adalah isu kesihatan yang sering dikaitkan dengan warga emas di seluruh dunia. Kejatuhan boleh menyebabkan kesan negatif pada individu dan juga menyebabkan kematian dalam kes tertentu. Kajian semasa kejatuhan adalah amat terhad di Malaysia. Tujuan kajian ini adalah untuk merumuskan kajian semasa yang dijalankan di Malaysia yang mengenai prevalens dan ciri-cirinya. Artikel telah dikenalpasti melalui menggunakan pangkalan data elektronik berikut: EBSCOhost, ClinicalKey, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, SpringerLink dan Google Scholar. Pemilihan artikel adalah terhad kepada artikel bahasa Inggeris yang diterbitkan antara tahun 2013 hingga 2019. Kajian ini menilai golongan warga emas yang berumur 60 tahun ke atas; sama ada di kediaman, komuniti atau institut perubatan. Sembilan artikel yang berkaitan telah dikenalpasti dan disiasat. Hasil kajian menunjukkan variasi yang ketara dengan julat 4-74 % dalam prevalens kejatuhan di kalangan warga emas di Malaysia. Salah satu kajian yang dijalankan dalam komuniti menunjukkan prevalens kejatuhan yang lebih rendah. Majoriti peristiwa kejatuhan berlaku pada waktu pagi seperti yang dilaporkan oleh tiga kajian iaitu sebanyak 49%-64.7%. Kejatuhan dalam kawasan bangunan adalah jumlah tertinggi lokasi jatuh dengan 50-87% manakala di luar bangunan adalah 13-49.3%. Lokasi di bilik mandi / tandas mempunyai peratusan kejatuhan tertinggi dalam bangunan. Kejatuhan yang menyebabkan kecederaan adalah antara 47% -82%. Perubahan pada prevalens kejatuhan dalam warga emas ditentukan oleh faktor-faktor seperti lokasi dan keadaan kesihatan. Maklumat yang dikumpulkan dalam kajian ini menunjukkan terdapat kekurangan alat ukur piawai bagi mengkaji ciri-ciri kejatuhan di Malaysia. Kajian prospektif diperlukan untuk menubuhkan prevalens dan hubungan faktor-kesan kejatuhan di Malaysia.

    Sindrom distensi beg kapsul ialah salah satu komplikasi yang jarang berlaku selepas fakoemulsifikasi dengan implan kanta intraokular dimasukkan ke dalam bag kanta dalam mata. Kami menerangkan satu kes sindrom distensi beg kapsul yang berlaku pada seorang lelaki berusia pertengahan yang menjalani fakoemulsifikasi dengan ‘plat haptic’ implan kanta intraokular (Zeiss CT ASPHINA 509MP) ke dalam mata kanan. Penglihatan mata kanan semasa pemeriksaan susulan 1 minggu and susulan 5 minggu selepas pembedahan tidak menunjukan penambahbaikan dengan refraksi kuasa mata bertukar menjadi minus 2.5 diopter. Tekanan intraokular hanya meningkat pada 2 jam selepas pembedahan dan normal semasa pemeriksaan susulan berikutnya. Beg kapsul distensi telah disahkan dengan menggunakan IOL Master 700. IOL Master 700 menunjukkan pengasingan abnormal beg kapsul dari implan kanta intraokular. Diagnosis sindrom distensi beg kapsul yang disebabkan oleh pengekalan viskoelastik dibuat. Pengeluaran viskoelastik yang tertinggal di dalam mata kanan telah dilakukan dan sindrom distensi beg kapsul berjaya diselesaikan dengan penglihatan mata kanan kembali ke 6/6. Oleh itu, pengeluaran viskoelastik dengan sepenuhnya semasa fakoemulsifikasi dengan ‘plat haptic’ implan kanta intrakular adalah penting untuk mengelakkan sindrom distensi beg kapsul.

    Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji hubung kait antara diameter kornea dan diameter kanta di kalangan kanak-kanak. Kajian ini melibatkan sejumlah empat puluh kanak-kanak (40 mata) yang kurang daripada 4 tahun yang menjalani pemeriksaan, prosedur atau pembedahan di Hospital Kuala Lumpur dari Januari 2010 sehingga September 2011. Pemeriksaan dijalankan dengan menggunakan bius am di dewan bedah. Diameter kornea diukur dengan ‘Holladay-Godwin cornea gauge’ sementara diameter kanta diukur dengan menggunakan mesin ultrasound yang mempunyai resolusi tinggi ‘ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM)’. Purata umur populasi kajian adalah 24.7 + 12.1 bulan. Purata diameter kornea melintang adalah 11.62 + 0.50 mm, lebih besar berbanding dengan purata diameter kornea menegak yang berukuran 11.20 + 0.58 mm. Purata diameter kanta adalah 7.94 + 0.47 mm. Diameter kornea didapati mempunyai korelasi positif yang sederhana dengan diameter kanta (r=0.479, p=0.002). Terdapat hubung kait yang kukuh di antara diameter kanta dengan umur pesakit (r=0.718, p

    Ovitrap autosidal berperanan penting dalam pemantauan dan kawalan vektor denggi, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Beberapa jenis ovitrap ini telah digunakan di Malaysia termasuklah Mosquito Larvae Trapping Device (MLTD) yang diperkenalkan oleh Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menilai kepadatan larva Aedes dan pembolehubah meteorologi setempat di sebuah penempatan pelajar di Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. MLTD (n=30) dengan umpan larutan baja NPK (5:5:5) organik telah digunakan. Pengumpulan larva dan penyelenggaraan ovitrap telah dilakukan setiap minggu selama lapan minggu. Pemeliharaan larva dan penentuan spesies telah dijalankan di makmal. Daripada sejumlah 2,152 larva Aedes, 85% merupakan Ae. albopictus manakala selebihnya Ae. aegypti. Ae. albopictus lebih banyak dikumpulkan di luar berbanding di dalam bangunan (purata larva per ovitrap, 9.28 lawan 6.08). Sebaliknya, Ae. aegypti lebih banyak dikumpulkan di dalam berbanding di luar bangunan (1.72 lawan 0.86). Ovitrap indeks yang paling tinggi adalah semasa minggu kelima (90%) dan keenam (93%). Minggu pertama menunjukkan ovitrap indeks yang paling rendah (30%). Analisis mendapati korelasi positif antara kepadatan larva Aedes dan suhu maksimum (r=0.830, p=0.011), manakala kelembapan relatif minimum menunjukkan korelasi negatif (r=-0.778, p=0.023). Pemantauan rutin bagi peringkat pramatang vektor denggi boleh memberikan maklumat mengenai kepadatan dan naik turun populasi nyamuk setempat. Apabila digandingkan dengan faktor meteorologi sejajar, maklumat ini dapat memberi panduan bagi perlaksanaan kawalan vektor sebagai sebahagian strategi pencegahan denggi.

    Penilaian anestetik pra-operasi adalah penting semasa penjagaan perioperatif. Matlamat utama kajian ini adalah untuk menilai tahap kepuasaan pesakit dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kepuasaan pesakit terhadap klinik pra-anestetik. Sejumlah 304 orang pesakit yang menghadiri klinik pra-anestetik telah terlibat dalam kajian ini. Kajian kepuasaan selidik dwibahasa (Bahasa Inggeris dan Bahasa Melayu) dengan berjumlah 18 soalan menguji faktor-faktor bukan penyedia (kemudahan klinik, kesesuaian masa menunggu) dan faktor-faktor penyedia (perkhidmatan doktor, pegawai kaunter, jururawat dan kakitangan sokongan) telah dikaji. Kajian kepuasaan selidik menggunakan format skala Likert lima mata skor sangat setuju/tidak setuju telah digunakan untuk menilai tahap kepuasaan pesakit. Secara keseluruhan, peratusan kepuasaan pesakit terhadap penilaian pra-anestetik dilaporkan sebagai 98.7% dengan skor purata untuk perkhidmatan doktor (4.49 + 0.60), pegawai kaunter (4.48 + 0.61), kakitangan sokongan (4.47 + 0.62), kemudahan klinik dan kesesuaian masa menunggu (4.40 + 0.62). Objektif kajian ini adalah untuk menilai pengetahuan dan sikap ibu bekerja terhadap perahan, penyimpanan dan penggunaan susu ibu. Kajian hirisan lintang ini disertai oleh 300 ibu bekerja sepenuh masa yang melahirkan bayi di sebuah hospital tertiari di Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Kajian ini menggunakan soal selidik yang mengandungi 28 soalan menguji pengetahuan dan 9 soalan menilai sikap yang telah disahkan kandungannya. Skor tertinggi adalah 28 untuk pengetahuan dan 45 untuk sikap. Skor purata untuk pengetahuan adalah 20.47 (SD 4.06). Ibu yang mendapat skor ≥21 (≥75% skor maksimum) dikategorikan sebagai mempunyai “pengetahuan yang baik” manakala mereka yang mendapat skor

    Indonesia is the second-largest contributor of microplastics (MPs) pollution in the marine ecosystem. Most MPs pollution-related studies in Indonesia focus on seawater, sediment, with less information found on the commercially important fish species used for human consumption. Skipjack Tuna (Euthynnus affinis) is one of the major exporting fishery commodities from Indonesia. This exploratory study aimed to determine MPs presence in the digestive tract of Skipjack Tuna from the Southern Coast of Java, Indonesia. The fish samples were collected from five different fish traditional auction market along the Southern Coast of Java, Indonesia, namely Pangandaran, Pamayang Sari, Ciletuh, Santolo, and Palabuhan Ratu. The gastrointestinal tract of Skipjack tuna was pretreated using alkaline destruction and filtered. The presence of MPs in the treated samples was visually identified using an optical microscope, while Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) contaminants were analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 19 suspected MPs particles were found in the form of filament (84%), angular (11%), and round (5%). This result would provide a better indication of the MPs contamination in marine life species in the Southern Coast of Java, Indonesia, as useful information for marine environmental monitoring program in the future.

    Platynosomum illiciens is a liver trematode encountered infecting mainly felids although it has also been reported in birds and in additional mammalian species, including non-human primates. The current study reports a natural P. illiciens infection primate of the genus Callithrix. The diagnosis was made using a combination of copro-parasitological techniques, morphological evaluation of adult specimens recovered from the liver during necropsy, and molecular analyses. Eggs were brown in color, oval, operculated, and contained a miracidium. Adult specimens recovered during necropsy were measured and showed dimensions compatible with P. illiciens. Molecular characterization of the trematode involved amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in combination with nucleotide sequencing, of an approximately 900 base pairs fragment corresponding to 18S-ITS1-5.8S ribosomal DNA. Sequenced amplicons showed 100% nucleotide identity with sequences deposited in the GenBank database as derived from specimens of P. illiciens recovered from cats in Malaysia and Brazil. It was concluded that the morphological and molecular analyses presented herein, confirmed the identification of the trematode recovered as P. illiciens.

    Pengurusan kendiri asma menggunakan pelan tindakan asma secara bertulis (WAAP) penting dalam memastikan pengurusan asma yang berkesan kerana ia mengurangkan kadar kehadiran ke hospital. Kajian ini menilai peningkatan pengetahuan dan kawalan asma menggunakan WAAP di kalangan pesakit asma di Jabatan Kecemasan. Kajian cubaan kawalan rawak ini dijalankan selama 19 bulan di Jabatan Perubatan Kecemasan sebuah hospital universiti. Kajian ini melibatkan pesakit dewasa serangan asma ringan dan sederhana. Pesakit dibahagikan secara rawak kepada dua kumpulan iaitu kumpulan intervensi dan kawalan. Soal selidik pengetahuan penyakit asma diberikan pada pesakit. Pesakit dari kedua kumpulan menerima kaunseling tentang penyakit asma berdasarkan risalah asma yang telah disediakan. Kumpulan intervensi, kemudiannya menerima kaunseling WAAP mengikut keperluan individu tersebut. Kumpulan kawalan menerima kaunseling lisan berdasarkan perawatan. Susulan kajian dijalankan pada 1 dan 3 bulan. Pengetahuan penyakit asma dan kawalan penyakit asma dinilai melalui tinjauan telefon. Lima puluh pesakit telah dibahagikan secara rawak kepada kumpulan intervensi dan kawalan. Setiap kumpulan menerima 25 pesakit. Skor pengetahuan kumpulan intervensi jauh lebih tinggi daripada kawalan (16.88+0.44 vs 13.36+3.72; p19) pada 1 bulan berbanding kumpulan kawalan (20.64+3.26 vs 17.72+4.17). Kedua-dua kumpulan mencapai kawalan yang baik pada 3 bulan. Pengurusan kendiri asma dengan menggunakan WAAP di Jabatan Kecemasan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kawalan asma di kalangan pesakit yang mendapat serangan asma ringan dan sederhana.
