    Landfill leachate is one of the major contamination sources. In this study, the ability of synthetic ion exchange resins which carry different mobile ion for removing color, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and ammonia nitrogen (NH(3)-N) from stabilized leachate was investigated. The synthetic resin INDION 225 Na as a cationic exchanger and INDION FFIP MB as an anionic exchanger were used in this study. INDION 225 Na was used in hydrogen form (H(+)) and in sodium form (Na(+)), while INDION FFIP MB resin was used in hydroxide form (OH(-)) and in calcium form (Cl(-)) form. The results indicated better removal of color, COD and NH(3)-N by using INDION 225 Na in H(+) as compared with Na(+) form, while no performance differences were observed by using INDION FFIP MB in OH(-) or Cl(-) form. Applying cationic resin followed by anionic resin achieved 97, 88 and 94, percent removal of color, COD and NH(3)-N. The residual amounts were 160 Pt-Co, 290 mg/L and 110 mg/L of color, COD and NH(3)-N respectively.

    Textile wastewater, one of the most polluted industrial effluents, generally contains substantial amount of dyes and chemicals that will cause increase in the COD, colour and toxicity of receiving water bodies if not properly treated. Current treatment methods include chemical and biological processes; the efficiency of the biological treatment method however, remains uncertain since the discharged effluent is still highly coloured. In this study, granules consisting mixed culture of decolourising bacteria were developed and the physical and morphological characteristics were determined. After the sixth week of development, the granules were 3-10 mm in diameter, having good settling property with settling velocity of 70 m/h, sludge volume index (SVI) of 90 to 130 mL/g, integrity coefficient of 3.7, and density of 66 g/l. Their abilities to treat sterilised raw textile wastewater were evaluated based on the removal efficiencies of COD (initial ranging from 200 to 3,000 mg/L), colour (initial ranging from 450 to 2000 ADMI) of sterilised raw textile wastewater with pH from 6.8 to 9.4. Using a sequential anaerobic-aerobic treatment cycle with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h, maximum removal of colour and COD achieved was 90% and 80%, respectively.

    In the present study, Electrochemical Oxidation was used to remove COD and color from semi-aerobic landfill leachate collected from Pulau Burung Landfill Site (PBLS), Penang, Malaysia. Experiments were conducted in a batch laboratory-scale system in the presence of NaCl as electrolyte and aluminum electrodes. Central composite design (CCD) under Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the electrochemical oxidation process conditions using chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removals as responses, and the electrolyte concentrations, current density and reaction time as control factors. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed good coefficient of determination (R(2)) values of >0.98, thus ensuring satisfactory fitting of the second-order regression model with the experimental data. In un-optimized condition, maximum removals for COD (48.77%) and color (58.21%) were achieved at current density 80 mA/cm(2), electrolyte concentration 3,000 mg/L and reaction time 240 min. While after optimization at current density 75 mA/cm(2), electrolyte concentration 2,000 mg/L and reaction time 218 min a maximum of 49.33 and 59.24% removals were observed for COD and color respectively.

    The application of computer and machines for agricultural production has been one of the outstanding
    developments in Malaysian agriculture, especially in overcoming labour shortages in Oil Palm plantations. The on-line automated weedicide sprayer system was developed at Universiti Putra
    Malaysia to locate the existence and intensity of weeds in real-time environment and to spray the
    weedicides automatically and precisely. During the start of the spraying operation, the web camera
    will initially capture the image of weeds. The computer programme will compute the red, green, blue (RGB) values in the form of computer pixel. These values will be used as reference RGB values to be compared with the RGB values of the weeds captured real-time during the spraying operation. The sprayer nozzle will be turned ‘on’ or ‘off’, depending on the percentage or intensity of the green colour pixel value of weeds. The sprayer valve will open the nozzle/s when the camera detected the presence of weeds. The purpose is to reduce wastage, reduce labour, reduce cost, and control environment hazard.

    This study evaluated the effects of different flours (tapioca, wheat, sago and potato) on the physicochemical properties of duck sausage. The examined physicochemical properties included proximate composition, cooking yield, color (lightness, redness and yellowness), folding, texture profile (hardness, elasticity, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness) and sensory properties. The study found that different flours have no effect on the cooking yield of duck sausage. The tapioca formulation showed a mid-range lightness value, folding score and textural properties. Duck sausages made with wheat flour had higher protein content and lightness value and a harder texture. Sausages made with potato flour had a darker color, the lowest folding scores and a softer texture. The addition of sago flour resulted in a higher folding score, greater elasticity and increased overall acceptability of sausage due to higher scores for texture and juiciness. These results show that the properties of duck sausage are influenced by the type of flour used.

    PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of poor visual acuity, colour blindness and visual field defect of new Malaysian drivers.

    METHODS: A total of 3717 new drivers (50.2% males and 49.8% females) age 19±6 years, voluntarily participated in this study. Standard optometric apparatus such as LogMAR Charts, Ishihara plates and HandHeld Bernell Perimeter were used and standard procedures were applied.

    RESULTS: The visual examination showed 6.7% (n=250) of subjects achieved less than 0.3 LogMAR with better eye whilst 2.2% (n=83) had failed the Ishihara Test (2.1% males and 0.1% females). Most of the affected drivers were deutranopia. Only 2094 subjects had their visual field using a mobile Handheld Bernell Perimeter. 1.72% (n=36) subjects have less than 120 degrees of peripheral field of vision.

    CONCLUSIONS: The visual status among new Malaysian drivers needs to be taken seriously to ensure safe driving. Other factors such as colour vision and visual field screening have to be considered seriously when evaluating the visual performance of a driver. Good visual performance is indispensible for safe driving.

    This study investigates the effect of flaxseed oil towards physicochemical and sensory properties of reduced fat ice creams and its stability in ice-creams upon storage. Three formulations, (F1, F2, F3) were developed by substituting milk fat with flaxseed oil at levels of 2.5%, 5.0% and 7.5%, (w/w) respectively. Samples were subjected to sensory evaluation and analyses such as meltdown, titratable acidity, pH, total solids, protein and fatty acids composition. Incorporation of flaxseed oil into ice-cream showed no effects on physicochemical properties of the ice-creams. However, it increased the colour of ice-cream towards yellowness, decreased the sweetness, smoothness and creaminess. Flaxseed oil incorporation also slightly (P < 0.05) decreased the acceptance level of aroma, flavour, texture and overall acceptability of formulated icecreams. The most acceptable level of flaxseed oil substitution is at 2.5 %. Gas chromatography analysis showed that fatty acids slightly decreased upon storage.

    ‘Kampuchea’ guavas were treated with 300, 600 and 900 nL L‾¹ 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) for 0,
    3 and 6 h, and stored at 27˚C with 70% relative humidity. The C* values, soluble solids concentration, titratable acidity and pH of these fruits were not affected by both the 1-MCP concentrations and exposure duration while h˚ values and flesh firmness were affected by these treatments. The L* values, vitamin C content and weight loss were affected by the concentrations of 1-MCP, but not by the exposure duration. Less weight loss and disease incidence in fruit treated with 600 and 900 nL L-1 1-MCP. Fruit exposed to 6 h 1-MCP showed lowest disease incidence compared to other exposure duration in 5 days of storage. Treating Kampuchea guava fruit with 600 nL L‾¹ 1-MCP and exposure duration of 6 h was able to retain fruit colour, flesh firmness and delayed disease development for 5 days.

    Sel tunggal dan berbilang sel metanol langsung berskala mikro dengan luas permukaan 1.0 cm2 beroperasi secara pasif telah dibangunkan dan diuji. Gas oksigen telah diambil dari persekitaran dan larutan metanol disimpan pada ruang tersedia pada bahagian anod. Prestasi sel tunggal diuji dengan menggunakan beberapa kepekatan metanol antara 1.0 M hingga 5.0 M dan keputusan menunjukkan kepekatan 4.0 M memberikan prestasi yang optimum pada operasi sel. Stek yang mengandungi 6 sel difabrikasi dan diuji dengan menggunakan kepekatan metanol optimum iaitu 4.0 M dan tenaga yang terhasil dengan muatan mangkin yang berbeza pada anod dibandingkan. Kombinasi muatan mangkin 3.0 mg cm-2 Pt/Ru pada anod dan 2.0 mg cm-2 Pt pada katod memberikan nilai tenaga yang paling tinggi antara kombinasi lain iaitu 12.05 mW pada 1.08 V dan 11.2 mA.

    Anggaran kuantiti dan pencirian fizikokimia sisa buangan makanan adalah pra-keperluan untuk mengoptimumkan proses pengkomposan. Satu tinjauan untuk menganggar jumlah sisa buangan makanan yang dijana oleh sektor komersial (n=10) dan isi rumah (n=50) di Bandar Baru Bangi telah dilakukan. Kehadiran komponen sisa nasi, sisa berasaskan daging, ikan, sayur-sayuran dan buah-buahan dan sisa buangan makanan basah yang lain juga diperiksa. Ciri fizikokimia sisa buangan makanan juga dianalisis. Jumlah sisa buangan makanan yang dijana di Bandar Baru Bangi dianggarkan sebanyak 11.41 MT sehari. Sektor isi rumah menyumbang 67.3% manakala sektor komersial menyumbang 32.7% daripada jumlah sisa buangan makanan yang dihasilkan. Kekerapan sisa buangan makanan berkeadaan basah adalah lebih tinggi (p<0.05) di sektor komersial berbanding sektor isi rumah. Sisa nasi merupakan komponen sisa buangan makanan yang paling kerap dijana oleh sektor isi rumah dan sektor komersial. Penilaian ciri fizikokimia menunjukkan nilai pH, kandungan abu, bahan organik, karbon organik, nitrogen dan lemak serta nisbah C/N adalah berbeza (p<0.05) antara sisa buangan makanan yang dijana pada hari yang berlainan. Sisa buangan makanan bersifat asid (pH 4.82-5.17) mempunyai kandungan air (65.9-69.5%) dan lemak yang tinggi (13.1-20.2%) tetapi kandungan nitrogen yang rendah (0.63-0.85%). Walau bagaimanapun, nisbah C/N masih berada dalam julat (20-25) yang sesuai untuk pengkomposan yang berkesan. Oleh yang demikian, dengan memperkenalkan proses pengkomposan, sisa buangan makanan berkenaan berpotensi digunakan sebagai kompos.

    Pertumbuhan sel secara selanjar pada keadaan mantap telah diperolehi dalam pengkulturan dengan bioreaktor padat. Produktiviti (0.02 g/L/j) bioetanol yang paling tinggi diperolehi adalah pada pengudaraan 0.003 vvm. Produktiviti bioetanol didapati meningkat dengan peningkatan kadar pencairan. Produktiviti tertinggi sebanyak 0.037 g/L/j direkod semasa kadar pencairan (D) 0.05 per jam. Penghasilan bioetanol secara selanjar telah berjaya diselenggarakan pada keadaan tidak 100% anaerobik. Pengudaraan yang terbaik untuk produktiviti bioetanol dalam keadaan seimbang pertumbuhan sel dan penghasilan bioetanol ialah pada 0.003 vvm.

    Kajian mengenai taburan ostrakod di dalam sedimen luar pantai telah dijalankan sekitar Pulau Besar, Johor. Sebanyak 11 stesen telah dipilih sebagai stesen pensampelan. Sebanyak 47 spesies ostrakod hidup dan mati daripada 37 genus dan 18 famili telah dikutip dan dikenal pasti. Sebanyak 1036 spesimen mati dan 932 spesimen hidup telah dijumpai di kawasan kajian. Spesies yang paling dominan adalah Pistocythereis cribriformis dan famili yang paling dominan ialah Trachyleberididae. Famili yang mempunyai kepelbagaian spesies terbanyak ialah Trachyleberididae dengan 14 spesies. Beberapa parameter fiziko-kimia telah diukur secara in-situ terdiri daripada suhu, saliniti, oksigen terlarut, pH dan kedalaman. Julat bagi setiap parameter masing-masing adalah 27.05-30.80oC, 31.20-34.01 ppt, 6.90-11.93 mg/L dan 6.60-20.50 m. Bagi parameter fiziko-kimia ex-situ seperti peratus bahan organik, pasir, lodak dan lempung dengan julat bagi setiap parameter masing-masing adalah 1.98-7.58%, 74.87-95.05%, 0.05-24.21% dan 0.75-9.74%. Tekstur sedimen di kawasan kajian boleh dikelaskan kepada pasir berlodak, pasir sangat halus, pasir halus, pasir sederhana dan pasir kasar. Indeks Shannon-Wiener, H(S) yang paling tinggi dicatatkan pada stesen ST 6 dengan 2.91 dan paling rendah pada stesen ST 11 iaitu 2.26. Kelimpahan dan kepelbagaian ostrakod adalah berkait dengan ciri-ciri sedimen. Peratus lodak menunjukkan korelasi positif yang signifikan manakala suhu dan peratus pasir menunjukkan korelasi negatif yang signifikan dengan kelimpahan ostrakod bentos. Parameter-parameter fiziko-kimia yang lain tidak menunjukkan hubungan yang signifikan.

    Fruits and vegetables are colorful pigment-containing food sources. Owing to their nutritional benefits and phytochemicals, they are considered as 'functional food ingredients'. Carotenoids are some of the most vital colored phytochemicals, occurring as all-trans and cis-isomers, and accounting for the brilliant colors of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Carotenoids extensively studied in this regard include β-carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin. Coloration of fruits and vegetables depends on their growth maturity, concentration of carotenoid isomers, and food processing methods. This article focuses more on several carotenoids and their isomers present in different fruits and vegetables along with their concentrations. Carotenoids and their geometric isomers also play an important role in protecting cells from oxidation and cellular damages.

    Yellow alkaline noodles (YAN) prepared by partial substitution of wheat flour with soy protein isolate and treated with microbial transglutaminase (MTG) and ribose were investigated during cooking. Cooking caused an increase in lightness but a decrease in redness and yellowness, pH, tensile strength and elasticity values of noodles. The extents of these changes were influenced by formulation and cross-linking treatments. The pH and lightness for YAN-ribose were lowest but the yellowness and redness were the highest whilst the tensile strength and elasticity values remained moderate. For YAN-MTG, the color and pH values were moderate, but tensile strength and elasticity values were the highest. YAN prepared with both cross-linking agents had physical values between YAN-ribose and YAN-MTG. Although certain sensory parameters showed differences in score, the overall acceptability of all 10-min-cooked YAN was similar. It is possible to employ cross-linking agents to improve physical properties of cooked YAN.

    Content-based image retrieval techniques have been extensively studied for the past few years. With the growth of digital medical image databases, the demand for content-based analysis and retrieval tools has been increasing remarkably. Blood cell image is a key diagnostic tool for hematologists. An automated system that can retrieved relevant blood cell images correctly and efficiently would save the effort and time of hematologists. The purpose of this work is to develop such a content-based image retrieval system. Global color histogram and wavelet-based methods are used in the prototype. The system allows users to search by providing a query image and select one of four implemented methods. The obtained results demonstrate the proposed extended query refinement has the potential to capture a user's high level query and perception subjectivity by dynamically giving better query combinations. Color-based methods performed better than wavelet-based methods with regard to precision, recall rate and retrieval time. Shape and density of blood cells are suggested as measurements for future improvement. The system developed is useful for undergraduate education.

    Sponge cake prepared by partial substitution of wheat flour with mango pulp and mango peel flours (MPuF and MPeF, respectively) at different concentrations (control, 5%, 10%, 20% or 30%) were investigated for the physico-chemical, nutritional and organoleptic characteristics. Results showed sponge cake incorporated with MPuF and MPeF to have high dietary fiber with low fat, calorie, hydrolysis and predicted glycemic index compared with the control. Increasing the levels of MPuF and MPeF in sponge cake had significant impact on the volume, firmness and color. Sensory evaluation showed sponge cake formulated with 10% MPuF and 10% MPeF to be the most acceptable. MPeF and MPuF have high potential as fiber-rich ingredients and can be utilized in the preparation of cake and other bakery products to improve the nutritional qualities.

    PURPOSE: A survey on new Malaysian drivers was conducted in Malaysia between year 2006-2009. The objective of this study was to look at the effectiveness of the present computerized visual screening tool and to compare it with the conventional testing method.
    METHODS: A total of 3717 drivers aged 19±6 years, who had passed in the computerized visual screening, participated in this study.
    RESULTS: 250 subjects achieved less than 0.3 LogMAR with their best eye and 83 subjects failed the Ishihara Test after retested using the conventional tool.
    CONCLUSION: These finding showed the computerized visual screening test failed to filter some subjects according to the standards set.
