    Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a brain illness that causes gradual memory loss. AD has no treatment and cannot be cured, so early detection is critical. Various AD diagnosis approaches are used in this regard, but Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides the most helpful neuroimaging tool for detecting AD. In this paper, we employ a DenseNet-201 based transfer learning technique for diagnosing different Alzheimer's stages as Non-Demented (ND), Moderate Demented (MOD), Mild Demented (MD), Very Mild Demented (VMD), and Severe Demented (SD). The suggested method for a dataset of MRI scans for Alzheimer's disease is divided into five classes. Data augmentation methods were used to expand the size of the dataset and increase DenseNet-201's accuracy. It was found that the proposed strategy provides a very high classification accuracy. This practical and reliable model delivers a success rate of 98.24%. The findings of the experiments demonstrate that the suggested deep learning approach is more accurate and performs well compared to existing techniques and state-of-the-art methods.

    Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke. Lignosus rhinocerus (Cooke) Ryvarden (also known as tiger milk mushroom), has been reported to exhibit a range of pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, antioxidative, immunomodulatory and anti-asthmatic activities. Thus far, there is limited research that has explored its ability to mediate vascular effects in vivo. Therefore, this study investigated the antihypertensive and vascular protective effects of L. rhinocerus TM02® sclerotia supplementation in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats served as a normotensive control group. SHR were orally administered with L. rhinocerus TM02® sclerotia (100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg, respectively) for 8 weeks, and blood pressure was monitored every 2 weeks. Vascular function was evaluated using an organ bath (aorta) and wire myograph (renal artery) at the treatment endpoint. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) in the aorta and renal artery were evaluated using dihydroethidium (DHE) and difluoro fluorescein acetate (DAF-FM) fluorescence assays, respectively. Total plasma nitrate/nitrite and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) levels were evaluated via colorimetric assays. In vivo treatment with L. rhinocerus TM02® sclerotia significantly attenuated the increase in systolic blood pressure (SBP). It also alleviated vascular dysfunction and decreased elevated ROS in the aorta and renal arteries of the treated SHRs. Moreover, L. rhinocerus TM02® sclerotia attenuated plasma TNF-α level but increased total plasma nitrate/nitrite, albeit slightly, coupled with significantly increased NO at the vascular level. Collectively, the present study demonstrated that L. rhinocerus TM02® sclerotia supplementation exerted blood pressure lowering effects, partly attributed to improvements in vascular function via reduction in vascular oxidative stress.

    BACKGROUND: To determine the potential influence of a home-based virtual group exercise on people's long-term overall health consequences in global Asian population.

    METHODS: We recruited 1021 participants from more than 7 regions across the globe including Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, United States, Canada, Europe, and other regions. All the participants attended the virtual group Qigong exercise 60-minute bi-weekly with instructors for 6 months from June 2022 to December 2022. The physical, mental, and social well-being and other variables were measured via online questionnaires.

    RESULTS: The majority were 51 to 65 (50.6%) years old, female (90.2%), married (68.5%), and came from Taiwan (48.9%). Older adults had higher scores on measures of overall health and exercise adherence, and lower scores on measures of sleep quality and depressive symptoms compared with younger counterparts (P

    BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been suggested as a treatment option for refractory status epilepticus (RSE) and super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE).

    OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review was to conduct an extensive literature review on the role of ECT as a treatment option for RSE and SRSE.

    METHODS: We searched Ovid MEDLINE and Scopus for journal articles from database inception until February 2024. Articles were then selected based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria.

    RESULTS: We identified five retrospective case series with 28 adult patients receiving ECT for RSE or SRSE. ECT was administered within 3-70 days (mean 20 days) after the development of SE, and the mean number of ECT courses ranged from 1 to 12 sessions for each patient. ECT was administered in fixed or titrated doses. A total of 20 out of 28 patients (71%) showed clinical improvement, with two (7%) having complete cessation of seizures. It is essential to note that given the lack of control, there could be overreporting of clinical improvement in these studies. 11 patients (39%) were reported as deceased due to causes that were not directly related to ECT treatment. Four patients (14%) reported adverse effects of ECT, including memory, concentration, and/or cognitive impairment.

    CONCLUSIONS: There are level-4 Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine evidence and low-level Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development and Education evidence that suggest ECT as a treatment option for RSE and SRSE. In light of the limitations of the existing evidence, clinicians should carefully consider individual patients' clinical contexts when deciding on the appropriateness of ECT as a treatment option. Further research, including prospective studies with controlled designs, is needed to elucidate the efficacy, safety, and optimal regime of ECT in the management of RSE and SRSE.

    Healing diabetic ulcers with chronic inflammation is a major challenge for researchers and professionals, necessitating new strategies. To rapidly treat diabetic wounds in rat models, we have fabricated a composite scaffold composed of alginate (Alg) and silk fibroin (SF) as a wound dressing that is laden with molecules of lithium chloride (LC). The physicochemical, bioactivity, and biocompatibility properties of Alg-SF-LC scaffolds were investigated in contrast to those of Alg, SF, and Alg-SF ones. Afterward, full-thickness wounds were ulcerated in diabetic rats in order to evaluate the capacity of LC-laden scaffolds to regenerate skin. The characterization findings demonstrated that the composite scaffolds possessed favorable antibacterial properties, cell compatibility, high swelling, controlled degradability, and good uniformity in the interconnected pore microstructure. Additionally, in terms of wound contraction, re-epithelialization, and angiogenesis improvement, LC-laden scaffolds revealed better performance in diabetic wound healing than the other groups. This research indicates that utilizing lithium chloride molecules loaded in biological materials supports the best diabetic ulcer regeneration in vivo, and produces a skin replacement with a cellular structure comparable to native skin.

    The work was aimed at evaluating the adsorptive properties of waste newspaper (WN) activated carbons chemically produced using sodium salts for methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) removal. The activated carbons, designated as AC1, AC2, AC3 and AC4 were prepared through impregnation with NaH2PO4, Na2CO3, NaCl and NaOH, respectively and activation at 500 °C for 1 h. The activated carbons were characterized for surface chemistry, thermal stability, specific area, morphology and composition. The AC1 with a surface area of 917 m2/g exhibits a greater MB capacity of 651 mg/g. Meanwhile, a greater CR capacity was recorded by AC2 at 299 mg/g. The pseudo-second order model fitted well with the kinetic data, while the equilibrium data could be described by Langmuir model. The thermodynamic parameters, i.e.., positive ΔH°, negative ΔG° and positive ΔS° suggest that the adsorption of dyes is endothermic, spontaneous and feasible at high solution temperature. To conclude, WN is a potential cellulose source for producing activated carbon, while NaH2PO4 activation could be employed to convert WN into activated carbon for effective dye wastewater treatment.

    INTRODUCTION: Drooling is a troublesome condition, especially in children with neuromuscular and intellectual disability. Over the past decade, novel interventions have been trialled to alleviate drooling in the affected children. Kinesio tape (KT) application has shown promising results in controlling drooling in children. We reviewed the literature to determine the outcome of KT application in drooling children.

    METHODS: A literature search was conducted from January 1, 1990 to March 2024 by searching several databases over a 1-month period (April 2024) according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The primary outcome was defined as the success of the intervention determined by the improvement or resolution of symptoms, and the secondary outcome was determined by adjunct or repeated procedures and the presence of complications.

    RESULTS: Overall, 172 children from 10 studies were identified. All studies included are retrospective studies (Level III). This review included 172 children, with a mean age of 8.2 years (Male: 58.7 %). All included children had underlying comorbidities (100 %), with neurological disorders (77 %) being the most prevalent. KT application was performed predominantly over the orbicularis oris in 6 studies, 118 children[68.6 %], suprahyoid region in 3 studies, 45 children (26.2 %) and multiregion over the head and neck in 1 study of children (5.2 %). Drooling was assessed subjectively in all 100 % of children with objective measurement performed in 3 studies. KT was the only intervention in 40.7 % of the included children, whereas KT was performed in combination with oromotor therapy in 48 children, speech therapy in 44 children, and manipulation therapy in 10 children. All included children (100 %) reported improvement in drooling. No studies reported adverse reactions to KT application.

    CONCLUSIONS: KT application is a safe, effective alternative for drooling children. The effect of KT, however, may be temporary. The quality of the evidence is inadequate to recommend widespread use of the intervention until a better-quality study has been completed. Future randomised controlled studies with a large sample size are warranted to determine the efficacy of this intervention among children.

    Staphylococcus aureus is a common bacterium that causes a variety of infections in humans. This microorganism produces several virulence factors, including hemolysins, which contribute to its disease-causing ability. The treatment of S. aureus infections typically involves the use of antibiotics. However, the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains has become a major concern. Therefore, vaccination against S. aureus has gained attention as an alternative approach. Vaccination has the advantage of stimulating the immune system to produce specific antibodies that can neutralize bacteria and prevent infection. However, developing an effective vaccine against S. aureus has proven to be challenging. This study aimed to use in silico methods to design a multi-epitope vaccine against S. aureus infection based on hemolysin proteins. The designed vaccine contained four B-cell epitopes, four CTL epitopes, and four HTL epitopes, as well as the ribosomal protein L7/L12 and pan-HLA DR-binding epitope, included as adjuvants. Furthermore, the vaccine was non-allergenic and non-toxic with the potential to stimulate the TLR2-, TLR-4, and TLR-6 receptors. The predicted vaccine exhibited a high degree of antigenicity and stability, suggesting potential for further development as a viable vaccine candidate. The population coverage of the vaccine was 94.4 %, indicating potential widespread protection against S. aureus. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the design of an effective multi-epitope vaccine against S. aureus infection and pave the way for future experimental validations.

    This study aims to determine the biochemical compositions and the in vitro antitumour effect of the parotoid gland secretions (PGS) of the Egyptian toad (Bufo regularis). The total protein, lipid, carbohydrate contents, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), the median inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), sodium dodecyl-sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) profile, amino acid analysis, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis and minerals were determined in PGS. The in vitro antitumour effect of PGS against human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG-2), breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and normal lung fibroblast (WI-38) cell lines were determined. The total protein, lipid and carbohydrate contents of PGS were 250 ± 15 mg/g D.W, 33 ± 3.2 mg/g D.W and 5 ± 0.65 mg/g D.W, respectively, while its TAC was 16.56 ± 0.12 mg/g D.W and the IC50 of DPPH was 51.95 ± 2.95 mg/mL. Six protein bands varied between 10 and 50 kDa were found in PGS. Among amino acid profile, arginine showed the highest content in PGS. GC-MS analysis showed that 11-octadecenoic acid methyl ester was the highest concentrations in PGS. The half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of PGS against HepG-2, MCF-7 and WI-38 cells were 131.82 ± 6.14, 189.71 ± 8.95 and 685.65 ± 33.1 μg/mL, respectively. In vitro study showed that treatment of HepG-2 and MCF-7 cells with PGS increased the percentages of early and late apoptotic. While the percentages of early and late apoptotic WI-38 cells after treatment with PGS were 2.1% and 3.7%. Cell cycle analysis showed that PGS treatment arrested HepG-2 and WI-38 in S-phase, while arrested MCF-7 cells in G2/M phase. The present study concluded that PGS has a potent antioxidant activity with in vitro antitumour effect against HepG-2 and MCF-7 cells.

    BACKGROUND: Thiopurine co-therapy with anti-tumour necrosis factor-alpha (anti-TNFα) agents is associated with higher anti-TNFα drug levels and reduced immunogenicity in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

    AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the association between 6-thioguanine nucleotide (6-TGN) and anti-TNFα levels and the optimal 6-TGN threshold level associated with higher anti-TNFα levels in combination therapy.

    METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional multicentre study of patients with IBD on combination anti-TNFα and thiopurine maintenance therapy between January 2015 and August 2021. Primary outcomes were infliximab and adalimumab levels. Secondary outcomes were antibodies to infliximab (ATI) or adalimumab (ATA). Univariable and multivariable linear regression were performed to identify variables associated with anti-TNFα levels. Receiver operator characteristic curves were used to define the optimal 6-TGN cut-off levels associated with therapeutic anti-TNFα levels.

    RESULTS: The study included 743 paired 6-TGN and anti-TNFα levels (640 infliximab and 103 adalimumab). 6-TGN levels were associated with infliximab levels, but not adalimumab levels, on univariable and multivariable regression. The optimal 6-TGN cut-off associated with therapeutic infliximab levels (≥5 mcg/mL) was 261 pmol/8 × 108 red blood cell (RBC) (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.57) for standard infliximab dosing and 227.5 pmol/8 × 108 RBC (AUC = 0.58) for escalated dosing. For therapeutic adalimumab levels (≥7.5 mcg/mL), the 6-TGN cut-off was 218.5 pmol/8 × 108 RBC (AUC = 0.59) for standard adalimumab dosing and 237.5 pmol/8 × 108 RBC (AUC = 0.63) for escalated dosing.

    CONCLUSION: 6-TGN levels were weakly associated with infliximab but not adalimumab levels in combination therapy. 6-TGN levels in the lower end of the therapeutic range (230-260 pmol/8 × 108 RBC) may be adequate to maintain higher infliximab levels, particularly with escalated infliximab dosing.

    Individuals are exposed to a wide arrays of hazardous chemicals on a daily basis through various routes, many of which have not undergone comprehensive toxicity assessments. While traditional developmental toxicity tests involving pregnant animals are known for their reliability, they are also associated with high costs and time requirements. Consequently, there is an urgent demand for alternative, cost-efficient, and rapid in vitro testing methods. This study aims to address the challenges related to automating and streamlining the screening of early developmental toxicity of chemicals by introducing a mouse embryoid body test (EBT) model in a 384-ultra low attachment well format. Embryoid bodies (EBs) generated in this format were characterized by a spontaneous differentiation trajectory into cardiac mesoderm by as analyzed by RNA-seq. Assessing prediction accuracy using reference compounds suggested in the ICH S5(R3) guideline and prior studies resulted in the establishment of the acceptance criteria and applicability domain of the EBT model. The results indicated an 84.38% accuracy in predicting the developmental toxicity of 23 positive and 9 negative reference compounds, with an optimized cutoff threshold of 750 µM. Overall, the developed EBT model presents a promising approach for more rapid, high-throughput chemical screening, thereby facilitating well-informed decision-making in environmental management and safety assessments.

    In this study, health risk attitude and health locus of control were included as dispositional factors in the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) to explain people's protective behavior in the context of COVID-19 pandemic. Empirical data involved two waves of data with a sample of 526 adults with full-time jobs from Beijing, China, and structural equation model results confirmed a partial successful extension of the PMT. Specifically, health risk attitude had a direct effect on citizens' protective behavior, but without an indirect effect mediated by threat appraisal toward the COVID-19 pandemic; health locus of control did not directly associate with citizens' protective behavior, but had an indirect effect on it fully via coping appraisal toward the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the PMT has been extended by adding a distal dispositional factor on the impact of coping appraisal on protective behavior. Implications for advancing the government's anti-epidemic strategy are discussed.

    BACKGROUND: Epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications, are pivotal in regulating gene expression pathways related to inflammation and cancer. While there is substantial research on epigenetic markers in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), Opisthorchis viverrini-induced cholangiocarcinoma (Ov-CCA) is overlooked as a neglected tropical disease (NTD) with limited representation in the literature. Considering the distinct etiological agent, pathogenic mechanisms, and pathological manifestations, epigenetic research plays a pivotal role in uncovering markers and potential targets related to the cancer-promoting and morbidity-inducing liver fluke parasite prevalent in the Great Mekong Subregion (GMS). Emerging studies highlight a predominant hypermethylation phenotype in Opisthorchis viverrini (O. viverrini) tumor tissues, underscoring the significance of abnormal DNA methylation and histone modifications in genes and their promoters as reliable targets for Ov-CCA.

    PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Relevant published literature was identified by searching major electronic databases using targeted search queries. This process retrieved a total of 81 peer-reviewed research articles deemed eligible for inclusion, as they partially or fully met the pre-defined selection criteria. These eligible articles underwent a qualitative synthesis and were included in the scoping review. Within these, 11 studies specifically explored Ov-CCA tissues to investigate potential epigenetic biomarkers and therapeutic targets. This subset of 11 articles provided a foundation for exploring the applications of epigenetics-based therapies and biomarkers for Ov-CCA. These articles delved into various epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation and histone modifications, and examined genes with aberrant epigenetic changes linked to deregulated signalling pathways in Ov-CCA progression.

    CONCLUSIONS: This review identified epigenetic changes and Wnt/β-catenin pathway deregulation as key drivers in Ov-CCA pathogenesis. Promoter hypermethylation of specific genes suggests potential diagnostic biomarkers and dysregulation of Wnt/β-catenin-modulating genes contributes to pathway activation in Ov-CCA progression. Reversible epigenetic changes offer opportunities for dynamic disease monitoring and targeted interventions. Therefore, this study underscores the importance of these epigenetic modifications in Ov-CCA development, suggesting novel therapeutic targets within disrupted signalling networks. However, additional validation is crucial for translating these novel insights into clinically applicable strategies, enhancing personalised Ov-CCA management approaches.

    CONTEXT: Tobacco usage accounts for one of the most preventable causes of death.

    OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore mechanisms linking cigarette pack factors, point-of-sale marketing, and individual factors (psychological reactant trait) to predict smoking intention among school-going adolescents.

    DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 6 urban secondary schools. A pretested and validated self-administered questionnaire was used. Data analysis for structural equation modeling was done using SMART-PLS v3.2.8.

    MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The main outcome measure was to determine the direct and indirect effects of cigarette pack factors, point-of-sale marketing, and individual factors (psychological reactant trait) to predict smoking intention among school-going adolescents in a theory-based model.

    RESULTS: A total of 386 adolescents fulfilling the inclusion criteria participated. Pictorial warning message reactance (β = .153, P ≤ .001), pack receptivity of conventional pack (β = .297, P = .004), and psychological reactant trait (β = .174, P ≤ .001) were positively related to smoking intention. Pictorial warning negative affect (β = -.153, P = .001) was negatively related to smoking intention. The psychological reactant trait was positively related to message reactance (β = .340, P ≤ .001). However, recall exposure to point-of-sale marketing and pack appraisal of conventional pack was not positively related to smoking intention (β = .038, P = .215 and β = -.026, P = .39, respectively). Pictorial warning message reactance also positively mediates the relationship between psychological reactant trait and smoking intention (β = 0.05, p = .001). The model has strong predictive power.

    CONCLUSION: In conclusion, cigarette pack factors and psychological reactant traits are essential in predicting smoking intention. Hence, policymakers should consider these factors in developing smoking policies.

    Residual nonvisible bladder cancer after proper treatment caused by technological and therapeutic limitations is responsible for tumor relapse and progression. This study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of a solution for simultaneous detection and treatment of bladder cancer lesions smaller than one millimeter. The α5β1 integrin was identified as a specific marker in 81% of human high-grade nonmuscle invasive bladder cancers and used as a target for the delivery of targeted gold nanorods (GNRs). In a preclinical model of orthotopic bladder cancer expressing the α5β1 integrin, the photoacoustic imaging of targeted GNRs visualized lesions smaller than one millimeter, and their irradiation with continuous laser was used to induce GNR-assisted hyperthermia. Necrosis of the tumor mass, improved survival, and computational modeling were applied to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of this solution. Our study highlights the potential of the GNR-assisted theranostic strategy as a complementary solution in clinical practice to reduce the risk of nonvisible residual bladder cancer after current treatment. Further validation through clinical studies will support the findings of the present study.

    PURPOSE: Most research on artificial intelligence-based auto-contouring as template (AI-assisted contouring) for organs-at-risk (OARs) stem from high-income countries. The effect and safety are, however, likely to depend on local factors. This study aimed to investigate the effects of AI-assisted contouring and teaching on contouring time and contour quality among radiation oncologists (ROs) working in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven ROs were randomly assigned to either manual or AI-assisted contouring of eight OARs for two head-and-neck cancer cases with an in-between teaching session on contouring guidelines. Thereby, the effect of teaching (yes/no) and AI-assisted contouring (yes/no) was quantified. Second, ROs completed short-term and long-term follow-up cases all using AI assistance. Contour quality was quantified with Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) between ROs' contours and expert consensus contours. Groups were compared using absolute differences in medians with 95% CIs.

    RESULTS: AI-assisted contouring without previous teaching increased absolute DSC for optic nerve (by 0.05 [0.01; 0.10]), oral cavity (0.10 [0.06; 0.13]), parotid (0.07 [0.05; 0.12]), spinal cord (0.04 [0.01; 0.06]), and mandible (0.02 [0.01; 0.03]). Contouring time decreased for brain stem (-1.41 [-2.44; -0.25]), mandible (-6.60 [-8.09; -3.35]), optic nerve (-0.19 [-0.47; -0.02]), parotid (-1.80 [-2.66; -0.32]), and thyroid (-1.03 [-2.18; -0.05]). Without AI-assisted contouring, teaching increased DSC for oral cavity (0.05 [0.01; 0.09]) and thyroid (0.04 [0.02; 0.07]), and contouring time increased for mandible (2.36 [-0.51; 5.14]), oral cavity (1.42 [-0.08; 4.14]), and thyroid (1.60 [-0.04; 2.22]).

    CONCLUSION: The study suggested that AI-assisted contouring is safe and beneficial to ROs working in LMICs. Prospective clinical trials on AI-assisted contouring should, however, be conducted upon clinical implementation to confirm the effects.

    The research, focusing on the analysis of nine trace elements, namely As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn, completely analyzed their quantities in both water and sediment inside the Rabnabad Channel. Samples were collected during the post-monsoon and analyzed by ICP-OES following acid digestion. The mean concentrations of elements in water and sediments are as follows: Fe > Mn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Zn > Cr > As>Cd, and Zn > Fe > Pb > Mn > As>Cu > Cr > Ni > Cd. To understand the state of ecological and human health risk, several indices were incorporated. Health risk assessment revealed that children posed higher risk than adults. PERI, TRI, and Igeo indices for water sediment indicate a significant ecological risk. Moreover, Mn and Pb exhibit elevated HPI values and contribute substantially to contamination factors. Correlation and PCA implicate both anthropogenic and geogenic sources, such as agricultural practices, coal-based power plants, and the Payra seaport, in the elevated concentrations of Cd, Cr, Mn, and Fe in both water and sediment samples.

    Despite remarkable success in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to achieve maximum economic growth, the Next-11 emerging economies grappling with an undesirable situation of environmental degradation have become a hot topic at COP28. Researchers have long focused on this connection, emphasizing the urgent need for international and national environmentalists to promote sustainable development (SD) in these rapidly growing economies under the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change action plans. As a result, this study examines the role of FDI in the N-11 emerging economies, focusing on energy usage and technological innovation within the theoretical framework of the Halo-Haven hypothesis, covering the period from 1990 to 2022. We utilize ARDL, FMOLS, and DOLS techniques to analyze both short-term dynamics and long-term equilibrium relationships, effectively managing heterogeneity, time dynamics, and cross-sectional dependence issues to produce comprehensive results. The long-term analysis supports the haven hypothesis, demonstrating an affirmative relationship between FDI, economic growth, and carbon emissions, whereas energy usage is negatively associated with carbon emissions. Furthermore, the D-H test established a reciprocal causal relationship between variables such as FDI, economic growth, trade openness, and environmental pollution. However, we found a one-way causal correspondence in the usage of green energy, the technological innovation index, and carbon emissions. Given the mixed findings, policymakers should focus on attracting FDI to the green energy sector while reinforcing regulations and implementing stringent oversight for FDI in energy-intensive industries. This approach will ensure that such investments adhere to high environmental standards, thereby benefiting future generations.

    The extensive use of plastic products has exacerbated micro/nanoplastic (MPs/NPs) pollution in the atmosphere, increasing the incidence of respiratory diseases and lung cancer. This study investigates the uptake and cytotoxicity mechanisms of polystyrene (PS) NPs in human lung epithelial cells. Transcriptional analysis revealed significant changes in cell adhesion pathways following PS-NPs exposure. Integrin α5β1-mediated endocytosis was identified as a key promoter of PS-NPs entry into lung epithelial cells. Overexpression of integrin α5β1 enhanced PS-NPs internalization, exacerbating mitochondrial Ca2+ dysfunction and depolarization, which induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Mitochondrial dysfunction triggered by PS-NPs led to oxidative damage, inflammation, DNA damage, and necrosis, contributing to lung diseases. This study elucidates the molecular mechanism by which integrin α5β1 facilitates PS-NPs internalization and enhances its cytotoxicity, offering new insights into potential therapeutic targets for microplastic-induced lung diseases.
