    The spread of infectious diseases was further promoted due to busy cities, increased travel, and climate change, which led to outbreaks, epidemics, and even pandemics. The world experienced the severity of the 125 nm virus called the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a pandemic declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019. Many investigations revealed a strong correlation between humidity and temperature relative to the kinetics of the virus's spread into the hosts. This study aimed to solve the riddle of the correlation between environmental factors and COVID-19 by applying RepOrting standards for Systematic Evidence Syntheses (ROSES) with the designed research question. Five temperature and humidity-related themes were deduced via the review processes, namely 1) The link between solar activity and pandemic outbreaks, 2) Regional area, 3) Climate and weather, 4) Relationship between temperature and humidity, and 5) the Governmental disinfection actions and guidelines. A significant relationship between solar activities and pandemic outbreaks was reported throughout the review of past studies. The grand solar minima (1450-1830) and solar minima (1975-2020) coincided with the global pandemic. Meanwhile, the cooler, lower humidity, and low wind movement environment reported higher severity of cases. Moreover, COVID-19 confirmed cases and death cases were higher in countries located within the Northern Hemisphere. The Blackbox of COVID-19 was revealed through the work conducted in this paper that the virus thrives in cooler and low-humidity environments, with emphasis on potential treatments and government measures relative to temperature and humidity. HIGHLIGHTS: • The coronavirus disease 2019 (COIVD-19) is spreading faster in low temperatures and humid area. • Weather and climate serve as environmental drivers in propagating COVID-19. • Solar radiation influences the spreading of COVID-19. • The correlation between weather and population as the factor in spreading of COVID-19.

    The current study aimed to evaluate the bioequivalence of a new generic combination of simvastatin and ezetimibe with the reference formulation. An open-label, randomized, 3-period, 3-sequence, crossover study, including 60 healthy volunteers, was implemented. Participants received the test and reference formulation, each containing 20 mg of simvastatin and 10 mg of ezetimibe as a single-dose tablet, separated by a minimum of 2-week washout periods. Blood samples were collected for 20 time points from predose to 72 hours after the dose. The total ezetimibe assay was carried out using a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, while unconjugated ezetimibe, simvastatin, and simvastatin β-hydroxy acid determination was done via a validated ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Each assay was preceded by a liquid-liquid extraction step. The pharmacokinetic parameters were derived using noncompartmental analysis and then compared between the reference and test formulations via a multivariate analysis of variance. No statistical difference was found in under the concentration-time curve from time 0 to the last quantifiable concentration and maximum concentration of unconjugated ezetimibe, total ezetimibe, and simvastatin between the reference and test formulations. The 90% confidence intervals of unconjugated ezetimibe, total ezetimibe, and simvastatin natural log-transformed under the concentration-time curve from time 0 to the last quantifiable concentration, and maximum concentration were in the range of 80%-125% as per the bioequivalence acceptance criteria. Therefore, the test formulation was bioequivalent to the reference formulation.

    Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous disease. Conventional two-dimensional (2D) culture employing cell lines was developed to study the molecular properties of CRC in vitro. Although these cell lines which are isolated from the tumor niche in which cancer develop, the translation to human model such as studying drug response is often hindered by the inability of cell lines to recapture original tumor features and the lack of heterogeneous clinical tumors represented by this 2D model, differed from in vivo condition. These limitations which may be overcome by utilizing three-dimensional (3D) culture consisting of spheroids and organoids. Over the past decade, great advancements have been made in optimizing culture method to establish spheroids and organoids of solid tumors including of CRC for multiple purposes including drug screening and establishing personalized medicine. These structures have been proven to be versatile and robust models to study CRC progression and deciphering its heterogeneity. This review will describe on advances in 3D culture technology and the application as well as the challenges of CRC-derived spheroids and organoids as a mode to screen for anticancer drugs.

    Foreign body ingestion is one of the most frequently encountered cases in otorhinolaryngology and most of the cases can be managed non-operatively. If left untreated, migration of foreign bodies can occur and presents a significant challenge in patient management. We hereby describe the case of an elderly gentleman who had a preceding history of fish bone ingestion and complained of dysphagia for two days. Clinical examination revealed swelling of the right vallecula with minimal pus discharge. Computed tomography (CT) of the neck confirmed the diagnosis of a migratory foreign body in the neck. He underwent open neck exploration and foreign body removal under intraoperative fluoroscopy guidance. A high index of suspicion of a migratory foreign body is warranted in cases of persistent, unresolved symptoms with the failure of endoscopic evaluation to detect the foreign body. Migratory foreign body of the neck may cause life-threatening complications and requires early surgical intervention.

    BACKGROUND: Direct digital photography for lip print recording is a recent trend, and there is a dearth of systematic research on the analysis of the recorded prints with existing clip print classification systems.

    AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the accuracy of the digital photographic method in lip print recording, comparing it with traditional methods, and assessing the suitability of commonly used lip print classification for analyzing lip prints recorded by photographic method.

    METHODOLOGY: A total of 72 participants aged between 20 and 26 were included. The lip print recording process involved photographing the lips without and with lipstick, followed by recording the lip print with cellophane tape on bond paper. The prints collected using the different methods were analyzed and compared for agreement, and the data were analyzed statistically.

    RESULTS: Inter-observer reliability was high for all methods (>0.800). The distribution of lip print patterns differed across the methods, suggesting a potential influence of the recording technique. The agreement between the conventional method and both digital methods was moderate (kappa=0.449-0.517). The agreement between digital methods with and without enhancement was also moderate (kappa=0.718). Notably, digital photographs with enhancement tend to have a higher positive agreement for several lip print types.

    CONCLUSION: Digital photography is a potential method for lip print recording. However, this study highlights the need for the calibration of lip print classification systems for digitally recorded lip prints. Further research is needed to refine the use of digital photography in forensic lip print analysis and to explore its integration with artificial intelligence for biometric identification.

    BACKGROUND: The emergence of the zoonotic monkey parasite Plasmodium knowlesi as the dominant cause of malaria in Malaysia has disrupted current national WHO elimination goals. Malaysia has free universal access to malaria care; however, out-of-pocket costs are unknown. This study estimated household costs of illness attributable to malaria due to P. knowlesi against other non-zoonotic Plasmodium species infections in Sabah, Malaysia.

    METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Household costs were estimated from patient-level surveys collected from four hospitals between 2013 and 2016. Direct costs including medical and associated travel costs, and indirect costs due to lost productivity were included. One hundred and fifty-two malaria cases were enrolled: P. knowlesi (n=108), P. vivax (n=22), P. falciparum (n=16), and P. malariae (n=6). Costs were inflated to 2022 Malaysian Ringgits and reported in United States dollars (US$). Across all cases, the mean total costs were US$138 (SD=108), with productivity losses accounting for 58% of costs (US$80; SD=73). P. vivax had the highest mean total household cost at US$210, followed by P. knowlesi (US$127), P. falciparum (US$126), and P. malariae (US$105). Most patients (80%) experienced direct health costs above 10% of monthly income, with 58 (38%) patients experiencing health spending over 25% of monthly income, consistent with catastrophic health expenditure.

    CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Despite Malaysia's free health-system care for malaria, patients and families face other related medical, travel, and indirect costs. Household out-of-pocket costs were driven by productivity losses; primarily attributed to infections in working-aged males in rural agricultural-based occupations. Costs for P. knowlesi were comparable to P. falciparum and lower than P. vivax. The higher P. vivax costs related to direct health facility costs for repeat monitoring visits given the liver-stage treatment required.

    AUTHOR SUMMARY: Knowlesi malaria is due to infection with a parasite transmitted by mosquitos from monkeys to humans. Most people who are infected work or live near the forest. It is now the major type of malaria affecting humans in Malaysia. The recent increase of knowlesi malaria cases in humans has impacted individuals, families, and health systems in Southeast Asia. Although the region has made substantial progress towards eliminating human-only malaria species, knowlesi malaria threatens elimination targets as traditional control measures do not address the parasite reservoir in monkeys. The economic burden of illness due to knowlesi malaria has not previously been estimated or subsequently compared with other malaria species. We collected data on the cost of illness to households in Sabah, Malaysia, to estimate their related total economic burden. Medical costs and time off work and usual activities were substantial in patients with the four species of malaria diagnosed during the time of this study. This research highlights the financial burden which households face when seeking care for malaria in Malaysia, despite the free treatment provided by the government.

    Foam-based delivery systems contain one or more active ingredients and dispersed solid or liquid components that transform into gaseous form when the valve is actuated. Foams are an attractive and effective delivery approach for medical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical uses. The foams-based delivery systems are gaining attention due to ease of application as they allow direct application onto the affected area of skin without using any applicator or finger, hence increasing the compliance and satisfaction of the patients. In order to develop foam-based delivery systems with desired qualities, it is vital to understand which type of material and process parameters impact the quality features of foams and which methodologies may be utilized to investigate foams. For this purpose, Quality-by-Design (QbD) approach is used. It aids in achieving quality-based development during the development process by employing the QbD concept. The critical material attributes (CMAs) and critical process parameters (CPPs) were discovered through the first risk assessment to ensure the requisite critical quality attributes (CQAs). During the initial risk assessment, the high-risk CQAs were identified, which affect the foam characteristics. In this review, the authors discussed the various CMAs, CPPs, CQAs, and risk factors associated in order to develop an ideal foam-based formulation with desired characteristics.

    INTRODUCTION: Sleep disorders represent an important comorbidity in individuals with ADHD. While the links between ADHD and sleep disturbances have been extensively investigated, research on the management of sleep disorders in individuals with ADHD is relatively limited, albeit expanding.

    AREAS COVERED: The authors searched PubMed, Medline, PsycInfo, Embase+Embase Classic, Web of Sciences databases, and clinicaltrials.gov up to 4 January 2024, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of any intervention for sleep disorders associated with ADHD. They retained 16 RCTs (eight on pharmacological and eight on non-pharmacological interventions), supporting behavioral intervention and melatonin, and nine ongoing RCTs registered on clinicaltrials.gov.

    EXPERT OPINION: The pool of RCTs testing interventions for sleep disorders in individuals with ADHD is expanding. However, to inform clinical guidelines, there is a need for additional research in several areas, including 1) RCTs based on a precise phenotyping of sleep disorders; 2) pragmatic RCTs recruiting neurodevelopmental populations representative of those seen in clinical services; 3) trials testing alternative interventions (e.g. suvorexant or light therapy) or ways to deliver them (e.g. online); 4) sequential and longer-term RCTs; 5) studies testing the impact of sleep interventions on outcomes other than sleep; 6) and implementation of advanced evidence synthesis and precision medicine approaches.

    AIM: To clarify the concept of fear of childbirth among pregnant women and to examine its current measure tools.

    BACKGROUND: Fear of childbirth is a psychological symptom, prevalent among pregnant women, which negatively impacts women's health and well-being. It has become an increasingly concerning issue in perinatal mental health. However, due to its poor conceptualization, it presents difficulty in conducting reliable assessments and identifying risk factors.

    METHODS: The Walker and Avant approach to concept analysis guided this review. Six bibliographic databases were systematically searched for published research from their inception date to May 2023. Additional records were identified by manually searching the reference lists of relevant studies. Quantitative and qualitative studies investigating fear of childbirth in pregnant women were included.

    RESULTS: Three critical attributes have been identified: cognitive impairments, affective disorders and somatic symptoms. Antecedents include perceived a real or anticipated threat of pregnancy or its outcomes, low perceived self-coping ability and unmet social support needs. Consequences include processing and avoiding behaviours. This study also identified the dimensions of fear of childbirth, including 6 primary categories and 14 subcategories. The content of five scales was analysed and none covered all domains.

    CONCLUSIONS: The current analysis provides healthcare providers with a more comprehensive framework to assess and identify fear of childbirth. Further research is needed to develop a suitable instrument that covers all the attributes and dimensions of this concept and assesses its severity.

    IMPACT: This conceptual analysis provides a comprehensive insight into the phenomenon of fear of childbirth. This will help family members, healthcare providers and policymakers to identify the psychological needs of pregnant women and improve the quality of antenatal care.

    Higher fungi of the genus Armillaria belonging to the phylum Basidiomycota produce bioactive sesquiterpenoid aryl esters called melleolides. A bioactivity-guided discovery process led to the identification of the new melleolide 5'-methoxyarmillane (1) in organic extracts from the mycelium of Armillaria ostoyae. Remarkably, supplementation of rapeseed oil to the culture medium potato dextrose broth increased the production of 1 by a factor of six during the course of the 35 days fermentation. Compound 1 was isolated and its structure elucidated by UHPLC-QTOF-HR-MS/MS and NMR spectroscopy. It showed toxicity against Madin-Darby canine kidney II (MDCK II, IC50 19.2 μg/mL, 44.1 μM) and human lung cancer Calu-3 cells (IC50 15.2 μg/mL, 34.9 μM) as well as moderate bioactivity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MIC 8 mg/mL, 18.4 μM) and Mycobacterium smegmatis (MIC 16 mg/mL, 36.8 μM), but not against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, and Septoria tritici. No inhibitory effects of 1 against the influenza viruses H3N2, H1N1pdm, B/Malaysia, and B/Massachusetts were observed.

    Female circumcision (genital cutting) in Malaysia is largely understudied at present. This study unpacks the perceptions of Malay-Muslim women with regards to sunat perempuan (female circumcision) in Malaysia. Through stakeholder engagement discussions organised by a civil society organisation, 17 Malay-Muslim women shared their views in relation to the practice with a particular focus on: (1) their awareness and personal experience of it; (2) their opinions and knowledge about the practice; (3) beliefs related to the practice; and (4) the roles of relevant stakeholders in advocacy work related to the practice. The data were analysed thematically and interpreted based on the grammar of legitimation and social norms theory. The findings reveal several themes, involving the perceived benefits of the practice; tradition and conformity to social norms; conflicting emotions related to religion; and implicit pressure and fear of negative sanctions in relation to the practice. The findings shed light on the concerns faced by Malay-Muslim women in their decision-making process in relation to the practice of female circumcision in Malaysia.

    BACKGROUND: Natural human infections by Plasmodium cynomolgi and P. inui have been reported recently and gain the substantial attention from Southeast Asian countries. Zoonotic transmission of non-human malaria parasites to humans from macaque monkeys occurred through the bites of the infected mosquitoes. The objective of this study is to establish real-time fluorescence loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays for the detection of zoonotic malaria parasites by combining real-time fluorescent technology with the isothermal amplification technique.

    METHODS: By using 18S rRNA as the target gene, the primers for P. cynomolgi, P. coatneyi and P. inui were newly designed in the present study. Four novel real-time fluorescence LAMP assays were developed for the detection of P. cynomolgi, P. coatneyi, P. inui and P. knowlesi. The entire amplification process was completed in 60 min, with the assays performed at 65 °C. By using SYTO-9 as the nucleic acid intercalating dye, the reaction was monitored via real-time fluorescence signal.

    RESULTS: There was no observed cross-reactivity among the primers from different species. All 70 field-collected monkey samples were successfully amplified by real-time fluorescence LAMP assays. The detection limit for P. cynomolgi, P. coatneyi and P. knowlesi was 5 × 109 copies/µL. Meanwhile, the detection limit of P. inui was 5 × 1010 copies/µL.

    CONCLUSION: This is the first report of the detection of four zoonotic malaria parasites by real-time fluorescence LAMP approaches. It is an effective, rapid and simple-to-use technique. This presented platform exhibits considerable potential as an alternative detection for zoonotic malaria parasites.

    Over the years, the biological activities of seaweeds could have piqued research interest due to their specific functional phytochemistry, which may not be available in terrestrial plants. Seaweeds produce these compounds to overcome and control stressful biotic and abiotic conditions. Additionally, they are potentially excellent sources of highly useful leads in the development of new drugs. Our study aims to unveil, for the first time, an overview of Halopteris scoparia, a species belonging to the Phaeophyceae class and the Stypocaulacea family, by summarizing all available literature data. In this work, we attempt to shed light on its phytochemistry, nutritional values, pharmacological activities, and industrial uses and applications. To gather information related to H. scoparia, relevant keywords were used to search internet databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, ResearchGate, Web of Science, Algae Database, WoRMS database, and DORIS database. The chemical structures were drawn using Chemdraw and verified using the PubChem database. Chemically, this species contains a wide variety of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids and phenolic compounds. Additionally, other chemical components with nutraceutical value have been identified, such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, pigments, minerals and mycosporine like amino acids. Then, holding several reported pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, dermoprotective, antidepressive, antibacterial, antibiofilm, antifungal, anti-parasitic activities and acute toxicity. In addition to other their applications such as bioconversion and antifouling activities. To confirm the previous pharmacological properties, more comprehensive and systematic in vivo, preclinical, and clinical studies are needed. Furthermore, research is required to uncover the mechanisms of its active compounds and their potential therapeutic effects in treating other diseases such as atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases, and viral infections.

    INTRODUCTION: Vector borne diseases (VBDs) present significant public health challenges in Southeast Asia (SEA), and the increasing number of cases threatens vulnerable communities. Inadequate vector control and management have been linked to the spread of VBDs. To address these issues, community participation has been proposed as a promising approach to enhance health programmes and control of VBDs. This article outlines a protocol for a scoping review of the published literature on community-participation approaches to control VBDs in the SEA region. The primary research question is 'How does community participation complement the control of VBDs in SEA?' This review aims to provide an overview of various approaches and identify barriers and facilitators to effective implementation.

    METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The research questions will guide the scoping review. In stage 1, peer-reviewed publications from PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus will be searched using predefined search terms related to community-based approaches and VBDs in the SEA region, English, Indonesian and Malay published between 2012 and 2022. In stage 2, the references from relevant articles will be screened for eligibility. In stage 3, eligible articles will be charted in Microsoft Excel to facilitate the review process, and studies will be characterised based on the investigated diseases; this review will also highlight the methodological context of these studies. In stage 4, a thematic analysis will be conducted to derive meaningful findings from the dataset relevant to the research inquiry, followed by writing the results in stage 5. This scoping review aims to be the first to explore community participation in VBD control in the SEA population, providing valuable insights for future research and stakeholders involved in disease control.

    ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This scoping review does not require ethical approval because the methodology synthesises information from available articles. This review is planned for dissemination in academic journals, conference presentations and shared with stakeholders as part of knowledge sharing among those involved in VBD control.

    Antimicrobial peptide LL37 is a promising antibacterial candidate due to its potent antimicrobial activity with no known bacterial resistance. However, intrinsically LL37 is susceptible to degradation in wound fluids limits its effectiveness. Bacterial toxins which are released after cell lysis are found to hinder wound healing. To address these challenges, encapsulating LL37 in microspheres (MS) and loading the MS onto activated carbon (AC)-chitosan (CS) hydrogel. This advanced wound dressing not only protects LL37 from degradation but also targets bacterial toxins, aiding in the healing of chronic wound infections. First, LL37 MS and LL37-AC-CS hydrogel were prepared and characterised in terms of physicochemical properties, drug release, and peptide-polymer compatibility. Antibacterial and antibiofilm activity, bacterial toxin elimination, cell migration, and cell cytotoxicity activities were investigated. LL37-AC-CS hydrogel was effective against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. LL37-AC-CS hydrogel bound more endotoxin than AC with CS hydrogel alone. The hydrogel also induced cell migration after 72 h and showed no cytotoxicity towards NHDF after 72 h of treatment. In conclusion, the LL37-AC-CS hydrogel was shown to be a stable, non-toxic advanced wound dressing method with enhanced antimicrobial and antitoxin activity, and it can potentially be applied to chronic wound infections to accelerate wound healing.

    Necrophilic behavior (attempted copulation with corpses) has been scarcely reported in non-human primates, especially in the wild. Here is the first case of necrophilic behavior observed in wild stump-tailed macaques in Thailand. Six groups of total N > 460 individuals have been identified and habituated. The corpse of an adult female was found and directly observed for 2 days and by camera trap for 3 days. The cause of death could not be identified, but no prominent physical injury was detected. Within 3 days of the observation, three different males attempted copulation with the corpse. Noteworthy for this observation was that not only males in the group of the dead female but also males from different groups interacted with the corpse. Taken together, these observations suggest that some cues emanating from the corpse coupled with a nonresistant/passive orientation may have triggered these responses in the males. Given that necrophiliac responses have been scarcely reported in non-human primates, our findings provide new insight into these behaviors and to comparative thanatology in general.

    BACKGROUND: Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) hold significant importance in biology, with precise PPI prediction as a pivotal factor in comprehending cellular processes and facilitating drug design. However, experimental determination of PPIs is laborious, time-consuming, and often constrained by technical limitations.

    METHODS: We introduce a new node representation method based on initial information fusion, called FFANE, which amalgamates PPI networks and protein sequence data to enhance the precision of PPIs' prediction. A Gaussian kernel similarity matrix is initially established by leveraging protein structural resemblances. Concurrently, protein sequence similarities are gauged using the Levenshtein distance, enabling the capture of diverse protein attributes. Subsequently, to construct an initial information matrix, these two feature matrices are merged by employing weighted fusion to achieve an organic amalgamation of structural and sequence details. To gain a more profound understanding of the amalgamated features, a Stacked Autoencoder (SAE) is employed for encoding learning, thereby yielding more representative feature representations. Ultimately, classification models are trained to predict PPIs by using the well-learned fusion feature.

    RESULTS: When employing 5-fold cross-validation experiments on SVM, our proposed method achieved average accuracies of 94.28%, 97.69%, and 84.05% in terms of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Homo sapiens, and Helicobacter pylori datasets, respectively.

    CONCLUSION: Experimental findings across various authentic datasets validate the efficacy and superiority of this fusion feature representation approach, underscoring its potential value in bioinformatics.
