Clinical scoring methods such as the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment
(SOFA) score are frequently used to predict outcome in sepsis, with limited capacity.
Further tools for risk assessment of septic critically ill patients would thus be useful.
Our purpose was to derive a scoring method i.e. Sepsis Mortality Score using multimarker
approach for the prediction of 30-day mortality in septic critically ill patients,
and compare its performance to the SOFA score (Copied from article).

Blood cancer is an umbrella term for cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow and lymphatic system. There are three main groups of blood cancer: leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Some types are more common than others. In this paper, a new image transform based on geometric mean properties of integral values in both horizontal and vertical image directions is proposed for leukemia cancer cell classification. Available classification methods using the classical feature extraction methods which are sensitive to rotation and deformation of the blood cells. The new transform is based on geometric mean projection, which —unlike other image transforms, such as Radon transform— is not considered all signals in an image with the same signal acquisition rate. Instead, it is general and thus applicable to all capturing signal functions to achieve sufficient invariant features. The geometric mean projection transforms (GMPT) guarantees that the detector only extracts the highly informative information from the object to achieve an invariant feature vector for an accurate classification process. This method has been used as cancer cell identification using microscopic Imagery analysis in this study. Dissimilarity metric calculation and shape analysis by using image transform has been used to extract the feature vectors of the imagery. Then, the accumulated feature vectors have been classified to different classes by using artificial neural network (ANN). The proposed technique has been evaluated in the standard images sourced from USIM, Malaysia. The evaluation results indicate the robustness of the technique in different types of images available in the dataset.

K-Means is an unsupervised method partitions the input space into clusters. K-Means algorithm has a weakness of detecting outliers, which have it available in many variations research fields. A decade ago, Rough Sets Theory (RST) has been used to solve the problem of clustering partition. Specifically, Rough K-Means (RKM) is a one of the powerful hybrid algorithm, which has it, has various extension versions. However, with respect of the ideas of existing rough clustering algorithms, a suitable method to detect outliers is much needed now. In this paper, we propose an effective method to detect local outliers in rough clustering. The Local Outlier Factor (LOF) method in rough clustering improves the quality of the cluster partition. The improved algorithm increased the level of clusters quality. An existing algorithm version, the π Rough K-Means (π RKM) tested in the study. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm performance is demonstrated based on synthetic and real datasets.

Complete blood count (CBC) is used broadly to screen individual's general health status. Some inherited red blood cell (RBC) disorders influence the RBC parameters. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) are amongst the important RBC parameters used in thalassaemia-haemoglobinopathy screening [1-2]. Globin chain disorders and Southeast Asian Ovalocytosis (SAO) are common RBC disorders in Southeast Asian countries [3]. We evaluated the RBC parameters in patients with Hb E and those with SAO co-inheritance.

A total of 33 from 1500 Malay patient’s samples that were sent for thalassaemia-haemoglobinopathies screening in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) were identified and consented (30 cases with Hb E and 3 cases with co-inheritance of Hb E and SAO). The inclusion criteria were Malay patients with MCV and MCH levels less than 78 fL and 27 pg respectively with presence of oval and stomatocytic RBCs in the peripheral blood film. DNA extraction was performed in samples suspected of having co-inheritance of SAO and Hb E. Primers 198 and 199 (AIT biotech Pte Ltd. Singapore) were designed for SAO detection [4], [5]. Hb E mutation was detected using ARMS PCR [6].

SAO was characterised by presence of an in frame 27bp deletion in exon 11 of the band 3 gene. A band of 175bp was observed in normal subjects and two bands, 175bp and 148bp were observed in heterozygous SAO subjects (Fig. 1).

Acacia polyacantha gum (APG) is a dried exudate which obtained from the stems and branches of Acacia polyacantha trees. APG is rich in soluble dietary fibers as well as organic compounds. In this study quantitation of the levels of total phenolics content (TPC) and antioxidant activities were conducted using ABTS and CUPRAC assays for APG extraction using pure solvents (methanol, ethanol, acetone) and their aqueous mixtures at 50% and 100%. The antioxidant levels were evaluated by 2,2’-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radical cation deculturization and cupric iron reducing capacity in the presence of neocuproine (CUPRAC) for the evaluation of reducing power, and (TPC) was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The solvent Methanol (50%) gave the best extraction ratio for APG presented by highest (TPC 60.78 mg GAE/100g of DW, CUPRAC 34.65 mg TE/100g DW, and, ABTS about 37.65 mg TE/100g DW respectively), followed by ethanol 50% extract. On the other hand, pure methanol showed the lowest TPC 5.33 mg GAE/100g of DW, ABTS 10.9 mg TE/100g DW, and CUPRAC 7.80 mg TE/100g DW, values respectively. Therefore, the variation in the antioxidant capacity of extracts was possibly due to the difference of polarity, immiscibility and the nature of the APG compounds extracted using various solvents. The higher content of antioxidant activity in APG shall be useful to human health if it is properly utilized.

Introduction: Dry eye is a common but under-diagnosed problem in the general population. Lack of standardised diagnostic protocol causes prevalence of dry eye varied widely in different populations. Nevertheless, effective management rests largely on the accurate diagnosis and identification of the contributing risk factors.
Methods: In a cross sectional study, socio-demographic, lifestyle and medical history data were collected from 157 respondents. A validated six-item questionnaire was used to determine the dry eye symptoms. Dry eye was determined by using Schirmer’s test. Fluorescein staining test and tear break up time (TBUT) test were performed to characterise the dry eye.
Results: Using the Schirmer’s test, 33.8% of respondents had dry eyes. The likelihood of dry eye increased among Malay females in the seventh decade. The most frequently reported symptom was sensation of dryness of the eye. Although only 22.6% of dry eye cases were symptomatic, up to 47.2% of them may developed surface changes detectable by fluorescein dye test. Ethnicity (p=0.019) and diabetes mellitus (p=0.049) were significantly associated with dry eye.
Conclusion: Dry eye could be subclinical but clinical tests in potential risk groups can lead to better detection of this condition and allow prescription of appropriate treatment for affected patients.

Homotopy continuation methods (HCMs) can be used to find the solutions
of polynomial equations. The advantages of HCMs over classical methods such as the
Newton and bisection methods are that HCMs are able to resolve divergence and starting
value problems. In this paper, we develop Super Ostrowski-HCM as a technique to
overcome the starting value problem. We compare the performance of this proposed
method with Ostrowski-HCM. The results provide evidence of the superiority of Super
    Ostrowski-HCM.

In this study, the physical, morphological, mechanical and thermal properties of furfuryl alcohol/2-ethylhexyl methacrylate/halloysite nanoclay wood polymer nanocomposites (FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNCs) were investigated. FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNCs were prepared via an impregnation method and the properties of the nanocomposites were characterized through the weight percent gain, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), three-point flexural test, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and moisture absorption test. The weight percent gain in the 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC was the highest compared with the raw wood (RW) and other WPNCs. The FT-IR results confirmed that polymerization took place in the nanocomposites, especially 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC, which had a reduced amount of hydroxyl groups. The SEM results revealed that the 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC had the smoothest and most uniform surface among all of the nanocomposites. The 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC showed the highest flexural strength and modulus of elasticity. The results revealed that the storage modulus and loss modulus of the FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNCs were higher and the tan δ of FA-co-EHMA-HNC WNPCs was lower compared with the RW. The FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNCs exhibited the higher thermal stability in the TGA and DSC analysis. The 50:50 FA-co-EHMA-HNC WPNC exhibited remarkably lower moisture absorption compared with the RW. Overall, this study proved that the ratio 50:50 FA-co-EHMA ratio was the most suitable for introduction in the in the RW.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), which largely affects the elderly, has become a global burden. Patients with AD have both short- and long-term memory impairments. The neuronal loss in AD occurs due to abnormally folded amyloid beta proteins and aggregation of hyperphosphorylated tau proteins in the brain. Eventually, amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are formed, which subsequently disintegrate the neuronal transport system. There are several factors which are involved in AD pathogenesis, including oxidative stress, inflammation and the presence of metal ions. The modern therapies utilized for AD treatment have many adverse effects, driving the quest for more safe and effective medications. Many dietary components, including different types of fruits, vegetables, spices, and marine products as well as a Mediterranean diet, are a good source of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties, with many showing substantial potential against AD pathogenesis. In this review, we discuss the potential of these foods for treating AD and opportunities for developing disease-targeted drugs from active compounds extracted from natural dietary products.

Angiogenicity is one of the essential components to enable tissue function. It is important to develop a construct that would help in catering oxygen and nutrient to the engineered tissue area. Thus, this study aims to investigate the attachment, spreading and growth of stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) on human AM (HAM) with or without vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) using scanning electron microscope (SEM), and indirectly see the potential of the HAM as a scaffold to promote angiogenic micro-environment. Since day 1, there were continuous changes of the cell morphology until day 28, SHED treated with VEGF seemed to change its shape from fibroblast-like into a round-shape cell, similar structure as an endotheliallike cell. The structures of filopodia-like were also observed on the treated SHED. SHED without VEGF treatment showed only normal morphological growth on HAM. VEGF is a protein produced to stimulate angiogenesis, and is believed to contribute to the morphological changes of SHED seeded on HAM. This indicates that HAM could be used as a scaffold to allow SHED differentiation into endothelial-like cells with the induction of VEGF.

Introduction: The Hedgehog (Hh) signalling pathway is a developmental signalling pathway involved in normal mammalian developmental and homeostasis of adult renewable tissues. In most adult tissues, this pathway remains silent and previous studies have shown that constitutive activation of Hedgehog signalling pathway leads to various types of malignancies including medulloblastomas, basal cell carcinoma, gastrointestinal, breast and prostate cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of Hedgehog pathway proteins in Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma and determine their association with overall survival (OS). Methods: Positive control using normal tonsils were included in each batch of immunohistochemical staining procedure. Results: PTCH1 proteins were highly expressed in DLBCL and showed strong staining intensity in 107 (100%) cases and SMO proteins were expressed in 105 (98.1%) cases. PTCH1 proteins were localised in the nucleus of tumour cells, whereas SMO proteins were mainly localised in the cytoplasm of tumour cells. Positive expression of PTCH1 and SMO proteins and overall survival of DLBCL patients were correlated with age, gender, race and tumour location. There was no significant correlation between the expression of these two proteins with any of the parameters. PTCH1 expression showed significant association with SMO expression (P=0.03). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that high expression of both PTCH1 and SMO may be important in the pathogenesis of DLBCL. However, additional mechanisms that may contribute to the activation of HH signalling in DLBCL needs to be further explored.
